Jilly's Restaurant Defeats Money Mailer in
Softball Finals
Jilly's Restaurant won the League Championship Series on Sunday, August 14 for the third time in the past four years by defeating Money Mailer 17-6. the victory by Jilly's was a total team effort in which they pounded out 20 hits against Money Mailer's 20-game winner Mitch Caplan. The assault was led by Mark Rosenstein's 2 homeruns and a Lee Eidelberg grand-slam. Jilly' pitcher Bruce Eisenberg allowed just one walk while improving his season recrod to 14-1.
Money Mailer took an early 1-0 lead as Chris Daniel launched a Bruce Eisenberg fastball halfway into the right field parking lot. Jilly's came back big in the bottom of the third scoring 6 runs, the first 4 coming via Lee Eidelberg's grand-slam homerun. On a full count pitch, Money Mailer pitcher Mitch Caplan threw Eidelberg a change-up which Eidelberg sent into the right centerfield gap for the homer. Jilly's was forced to utilize their bench early as Joe Weinberg and David Pinsky both were forced from the game with injuries. Jilly's had entered the game without the services of pitcher Skip Millison (16-2) who suffered a broken arm during batting practice last week. Despite this, Jilly's eventually expanded their lead to 11-2 before Money Mailer rallied for 4 runs in the top of the sixth. The game was put out of reach in the bottom of the sixth as Jilly's went on to score 6 more runs including the second homerun on the day off the bat of Mark Rosenstein.
Jilly's provided Money Mailer with both of their defeats in this year's double-elimination tournament. Jilly's has now won 4 League Championships (1987, 1991, 1992, 1994) in the 9 years of Paul Bell's managerial career. Although appearing in their second straight Championship Series, Mitch Caplan's Money Mailer team is still seeking its first league title.
