Round 1

Pikesville Middle School Field #2
Orbin Publishing (8) 5 at Havana Club Cannons (1) 6  (8 Innings)
WP- Mark Yokel   LP - Gary Schoengold
The Havana Club Cannons opened their 2001 playoff season versus the bottom seeded Orbin Publishing. However, Orbin looked for most of the game as if they were going to spring a first round upset. Orbin scored in each of the first four innings, and carried a 5-2 lead into the 6th. Jeff Robbins, who was the Cannons starting pitcher, singled in 2 1st inning runs, and then the bats got very quiet. Robbins singled in Ernie Stephenson in the 6th, to make it 5-3 into the 7th. Mark Yokel, who had been in the line-up as a DH, came in to pitch 4 shutout innings, and got the win, but it was Yokel's 2 run homerun that tied it in the b-7th. In the b-8th inning, Evan Kreitzer led off with a single. Jeff Robbins got yet another hit (4-for-4), and Gerry Edelman singled and knocked in Kreitzer with the game winner.

Kings Alan Varhaftik began the t-4th with a solo HR, but Attman's starter Bruce Eisenberg was almost perfect the rest of the way, retiring the next 11 in a row, with only a Todd Katz single with 2 out in the t-7th. Kings starter Chuck Grant and Eisenberg each allowed just 8 hits in their complete games. Extra base hits in the game were limited to 2 doubles by Attman's and 1 HR by the Kings. In the extra frame, Larry Newman singled to get things started and David Kowitz tripled to RF for the go ahead, and eventual winning run. Larry Newman got the 10-9 win and Mike Johnson took the loss. Kings(7)   8 at Legal Papers Inc (4) 6
WP- Jeff Goldstein   LP - Ted Winner
In a closely played, typical playoff contest, the Kings held on to defeat and eliminate Legal Papers 8-6. In Kings t-1st, the first 3 batters reached base. 3B Kenny Salzman singled, SS Jan Katzen walked, and RCF Jeff Slutzker hit an RBI single, moving Katzen to 3B. C Chuck Grant's SF to RCF Marc Summerfield gave the Kings a 2-0 lead. In b-2nd, LPI LCF Marc Cucina drew a lead off walk and RF Dave Michaelson reached on an infield error. With 2 outs, P Ted Winner singled home Cucina. In t-3rd, with 1 out, Salzman singled and Katzen followed with a 2-run HR to LF, putting Kings ahead 4-1. In t-4th, with 2 outs 1B Josh Frederick walked, 2B Dave Roogow singled, and P Jeff Goldstein helped himself with a line drive RBI single to RF, putting Kings ahead 5-3. Legal Papers again bounced back in their half of the inning. Dave Michaelson singled, 1B Bob Hansen walked, and 2B Paul Shifrin walked, loading the bases with 0 outs. A Ted Winner RBI single, Marc Summerfield SF, and LF Eric Ruby SF put LPI ahead 6-5 after 4 innings. The LPI lead was very brief as Slutzker and Grant singled to lead off the t-5th. Alan Varhaftik hit a SF to LF to knot score 6-6. An EH Mike Herr RBI fielder's choice put the Kings ahead 7-6. LPI threatened in the b-5th, but left the bases loaded. Marty Ellis entered the game to start the t-6th, with Ted Winner leaving due to shoulder stiffness. Ellis was greeted by lead off singles by Frederick and Roogow. Pinch-hitter Marc Goldstein hit a flyout to RF, but Frederick was able to tag and move to 3B. This was key as the next hitter, Ken Salzman brought home Frederick with a SF to RCF. LPI threatened again in b-6th, but left 2 baserunners. In b-7th, Jeff Sacks singled with 1 out, but Jeff Goldstein (who re-entered for Marc Goldstein) was able to retire Cucina and RF Jeff Wolf for the final 2 outs of the game.

In the game, LPI stranded 12 baserunners, while the Kings were not much better, leaving 11 men-on-base. Goldstein limited LPI to just 10 hits, while the Kings managed 12 hits against Winner in 5 innings and 3 hits against Ellis in 2 innings.
