Pikesville Middle School Field #1
N.E.K. Entertainment vs Kings
Game 1
Kings 16  N.E.K. Entertainment  0 (4 Innings)
Kings Ken Zalis made his first pitching start in several years and tossed a 2 hitter as the Kings defeated N.E.K. 16-0 in a 4 inning opening game on Fenway.  In Kings b-1st, with 1 out, a base hit and 2 walks loaded the bases for Alan Varhaftik. Varhaftik launched a grand-slam homer over the trees in LCF. Kings scored 7 more runs in t-3rd including 6 hits to start the inning. Key hits were a 2-RBI single by Mike Pusateri and a 2-RBI double by Dave Roogow. Varhaftik went deep again in the t-4th, this time a 2-run HR.

In the game Varhaftik, who was acting manager while Mike Herr umpired, went 3-for-3 with 3 R,2 HR, and 7 RBI. Other hitting stars for the Kings were Dave Mize (3-3,3 R,1 RBI), Mike Pusateri (2-3,2 R,2 RBI).  David Pridgen took the loss for N.E.K.

Game 2
Kings 8  N.E.K. Entertainment  3
N.E.K. held a 3-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings on 3 unearned runs, but Kings scored the final 8 runs of the game and took game 2 by a score of 8-3. RBI singles by Kenny and David Pridgen provided the brief lead for NEK. Kings starting pitcher Mike Herr (game 2-3,1 R,2 RBI, HR) got the Kings on the board with a leadoff HR starting b-3rd. Kings added 4 more runs in b-3rd, the key hit a Kenny Salzman (game 1-3,1 R,3 RBI, 3B) 3-RBI triple. Herr cruised the middle innings, at one point retiring 11 NEK batters in-a-row before yielding 2 hits in the 7th inning. The game ended when SS Mike Pusateri started a doubleplay.

The Kings rested pitcher Chuck Grant for the doubleheader, while announcing that pitcher Jeff Goldstein is out indefinitely with a knee injury. Grant is scheduled to go back into the rotation for next week's match-up against Palmgard. Kings were also without recently married 3B Scott Katzen, who decided to sleep in on his last day off before beginning an internal medicine residency at U of MD Hospital.

Kings LCF Alan Varhaftik has great career numbers on Fenway. When the Kings last played a game on Fenway, May 31, 1998, Varhaftik homered in his last at-bat against Bruce Eisenberg and Attman's Deli. Since the start of the 1995 season, Varhaftik on Fenway in 23 games is 36-74 (.485), 27 R, 35 RBI, 9 2B,1 3B, 7 HR.

Havana Club Cannons vs Mount Washington Tavern
Game 1
Cannons 14 MWT 6
The Havana Club Cannons were given some resistence by the lowly Mt. Washington Tavern in game one this Sunday, but The Havana Club persevered and came out on top 14-6. Johnny Edelman led off the game with a homerun to left, and Robert Isennock drilled a three run shot to left center. These hits combined with RBI's from Dan Kassel and Steve Henneman staked the Cannons to a six zip lead. After four innings the score was 7-3, and the Cannons were feeling the need to get some more. Rob Isennonk doubled in Brad Rosenberg and Steve Henneman, and all reached base after two outs. Then it was a 9-4 game after five. In the sixth there was the nice oddity of Jeff Kurland getting two RBI's on a sac fly to right. Johnny Edelman double tagged successfully, but the oddity was that Gerry Edelman scored also, a father and son exacta. Tom Paulshock got the win, and ran his record to 6-3.
Dan Kassel and Brad Rosenberg each scored three runs while knocking in two.

Howard Goldberg pitched a good game allowing very few earned runs for the Tavern. The Tavern couldn't seem to get out of the 5th and 6th innings without committing several errors which led to 5 runs. David Stein played a great second base for the Tavern and Jon Goldman was solid at shortstop. Hitting stars for the Tavern in the opener were:
Jason Ott 2-3 2runs
Gabe Unterman 2-3 3b 2runs
Lee Pollak 2-3 solo homerun

Game 2
Cannons 17 MWT 3
Game two was not as contentious as Mark Yokel notched his eighth win. The
Cannons won, in a four and a half inning affair 17-3. HC Cannons started out again in the first inning, this time getting 5runs to start the game. The Tavern's bats quieted some this game and the defense started to collapse allowing the Cannons to score 9 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings.  Steve Hennaman and Neal Charkatz blasted homeruns in a seventeen hit barage by the Cannons. A
multi-hit game was enjoyed by Evan Kreitzer, Jeff Kurland, Johnny Edelman, Dan Kassel, Steve Henneman, Neal Charkatz and Gerry Edelman. Joe Mondel had two nice plays at the plate while patroling the backstop. Mark Yokel is now 8-1 on the season, and he and the rest of the Cannons meet the Jilly's Turtles at "Fenway" June 30th.

Pikesville Middle School Field #3
GorgeousWatches.com vs Kelly & Associates
Game 1
GW 15 K&A 0 (4 Innings)
Jeff Harris pitched 4 strong innings and recorded his first career shutout. G.W. got on the board quickly as they scored 7 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The big blast cam off the bat of Mark Rosenstein who cleaned the bases with a two out triple. G.W. continued the onslaught in the bottom of the second inning scoring 6 more runs to make the score 13-0 after two innings. G.W.'s 1-4 batters (Craig Dlin, Larry Henderson, Tony Luna, Russ Dlin) were a combined 8 for 12 and scored 8 runs. Mark Rosenstein added a line drive H.R. in the bottom of the third and Andrew Rosenstein ended the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 4th to end the game by the slaughter rule, 15-0.

Game 2
GW 23  K&A 12
G.W. fell behind 3-0 early in the first inning but got the bats rolling to cruise to victory by the final score of 23-12. G.W. went down in order in the first inning looking at a total of 5 pitches. G.W. ran into a problem at the end of the second inning as Mark Rosenstein pulled a hamstring running after a fly ball and getting yelled at by his brother/manager for doing so. After Manager Andrew Rosenstein cooled down from his slight temper tantrum which left his team with only 10 players, he proceeded to calmly blast a bases clearing Grand Slam in the top of the third inning. G.W. scored 9 runs off of 7 hits in the third inning. G.W. ran into yet another problem in the bottom of the 3rd inning as 3B Joel Koman got tangled up with a baserunner (Mike O'Hagen) from Kelly & Associates. After a little back and forth confrontation and muscle flexing, Koman decided that he could not throw any punches since his mom and wife were watching from the stands. Fortunately, cool. Key Players in the double header: Ricky Schrieber (5 for 7, 4 runs), A.Rosenstein (4-6, HR, 7 runs), Jon Koman (3-4, HR, 2b), SS Kevin (3-5, 5 sac fly rbi), Russ Dlin (4-6, HR, 3B, 2B, 7 runs), Mark Rosenstein (3-5, HR, 3B).

Pikesville Middle School Field #4
Sky & Sky Inc vs Palmgard
Game 1
Sky 10  Palmgard 7
Sky & Sky was raring to go right from the start of the game. Brian Kowitz delivered big with a shot to RCF that pushed Sky & Sky out in front by 2. Palmgard cut the lead in half, but Sky & Sky managed a run in the t-2nd off the bat of injured catcher Mike Rottenberg. Palmgard tied it in their half of the second, as neither team seemed to be pressing with all of the early hits. Again in the t-3rd Kowitz duplicated his first inning performance with another 2-run blast. Scott Felton followed that shot with a solo dinger. The contest stayed close until Sky & Sky bats got hot again in the 5th. A leadoff triple opened the door for Sky & Sky to push ahead by 5 after 5 innings despite two Kevin Oliner K's in the inning. To give the fans their monies worth, Brian Kowitz seemingly picked his spot with a frozen rope shot to dead center between the shifted outfielders for the homerun hat trick. Brian "Sky" Mekiliesky added a HR of his own in Sky's final at bat to place Palmgard in a 7-run hole. Their bats did come to life as they managed to push across 4 in the b-7th, but Sky recorded the final out with the tying run at the plate. Larry Newman got the decision, and Kevin Oliner took the loss. Sky & Sky bats were led by Brian Kowitz who went 4-4 with 3 HR's,3B,5 rbi,4 runs. Brian Sky was 3-4,HR,2 1B.

Hitting stars for Palmgard were:
Mike Woods (3-3, 2B, 2R)
Jeff Sacks (2-3, 2-2B, R, 3RBI)

Game 2
Palmgard 18  Sky 13
The second game did not see as many breaks for Sky & Sky, as two early errors opened the flood gates for Palmgard with a 7-run first. They added one in t-2nd to push out in front by 8. Realizing the hole they were in, Sky & Sky cut the lead to one as the first 7 batters in the inning hit safely. Terry Lonciotti took a 3-0 change-up to deep RCF, and 5 singles later, there was a new ballgame. Not to be outdone, Palmgard answered decisively with 7 of their own in the t-3rd, and maintained that 7 run lead after 4 innings. The closest Sky & Sky would come was a 7-th inning rally that netted them 3-runs with Palmgard skating to the 18-13 victory. Marty Ellis got the win and Larry Newman took the loss. Sky & Sky's Joel Wax went 3-4 with a HR that rolled to the parking lot and 2 singles,2rbi. Scott Felton was 2-3,3B,2B,BB, Brian Mekiliesky 2-3,HR,1B,BB,3rbi, and Larry Newman who continued to carry the hot stick from last week with a 3-3 day at the plate.

Hitting stars for Palmgard were:
Grailen Archie (3-5, 2B, 4R)
Dave Kopel (3-5, 2B, 2R, 2RBI)
Jim Davis (3-5, 2RBI)
Jim Silvestri (4-4, HR, 4R, 3RBI)
Mickey Golden (3-4, 2R)
Mike Woods (3-4, 2R)
Jeff Sacks (2-2, 2 Grand Slams, 2R, 8RBI)

Pikesville Senior High Field #5
Jilly's Turtles vs Eastern Savings Bank
Game 1
ESB 14 Turtles 6
Even though ESB is an expansion club over the last few weeks they haven’t been playing like one. Their improvement showed up big time in a 14-6 victory over the Turtles behind the outstanding pitching of Ted Winner and his tremendous grand slam homerun. The game went back and forth in the early innings with ESB  getting home runs from Mark Loeb(not Rabbi Loeb) and Shmuel Luxenberg.  It was an outstanding team effort both on offense and defense. Hitting stars in the first game was Jonathan Feldman who had three hits and Yoni Rosenblatt who also had three hits.

Eastern Savings Bank capitalized with the absence of Pitcher Bruce Eisenberg to surprise the league leading Jilly's Turtles
with a convincing 14-6 victory. Several ESB hitters knocked the ball in the gaps, played steady defense and got a dominating
performance from Ted Winner to coast in game one with Winner hitting a Grand Slam off 1st time loser Detour Dave to put the game away in the 7th with a five-run finish.

Game 2
Turtles 17  ESB 1 (5 Innings)
In game two the Turtles showed the pride of a champion by jumping out on ESB early and often and took the nightcap 17-1.
Several hitters enjoyed the offerings of "Rabbi" Dave Finkelstein who only lasted until the 3rd...Hitting stars include the hot hitting
Reggie Ellis, who went 4 for 4 with 3 rbi's and two runs scored. Detour Dave only allowed the one ESB run and helped his cause
breaking out of a long slump going 4 for 4 as well with 2 rbi's...Rob Gould, hobbled with a pulled thigh and a bad leg, drilled two triples to knock in two and steady Ricky Farley had a perfect game going 4 for 4 with three runs scored. Sky and Sky helped the Turtles cause taking one from Palmgard to allow Jilly's to maintain it's slim one game lead. A big showdown on Fenway next week matches two Powerhouses, as it will be The Cannons and the Turtles on field one.
