PMS Week 13 / June 30, 2002 Highlights

Pikesville Middle School Field #1
Jilly's Turtles vs Havana Club Cannons
Game 1
Turtles 6  Cannons 5
In a see-saw battle between the 1st and 2nd place teams the Turtles scored two runs in the bottom of the 5th and held on as the Cannons had a man on third with two-out in the 7th before the hard grounder to third-baseman Rob Gould ended it to give the league leaders a 6-5 first game win. Tommy Paulsock and Bruce Eisenberg matched pitch for pitch with the big blow being Evan Kreitzer's 3 run homer over Mark Summerfield's mis-judged play in right-field in the Cannon 4 run 3rd. With the score at 5 to 3, Jilly's got one back in their end of the 3rd on Summerfield's sac fly and finished the scoring with Lee Eidelberg's two run single. Rob Gould had the big blow in the game--hitting a three run blast to right in the bottom of the 2nd.

Game 2
Cannons 7  Turtles 3
In game two, the Turtles led 3 to 1 going into the bottom of the 6th ...but the Cannon's gave the Turtles a dose of their own medicine, singles and more line drive base hits to score six times and put the game away 7-3 behind Mark Yokel, who has beaten Jilly's in both of his starts. Eisey took the loss for the Turtles. In the doubleheader, Ricky Farley went 4 for 6 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.

Pikesville Middle School Field #3
Mount Washington Tavern vs Eastern Savings Bank
Game 1
ESB 15  MWT 0 (4 Innings)
Ugly game for the Tavern as usual the bats were still sleeping for the first game. Howard Goldberg decided it was unfair to start the game 0-0 so he walked as many ESB players as possible leading to a 12 run first inning spot. After the 12 run handicap ESB took the game 3-0.

Game 2
MWT 11 ESB 10
The Tavern awoke from their first game slumber to take a 3-0 lead lead in the t-1st from a booming homerun to straight away center by Howard Goldberg. ESB answered with 2 of their own in the b-1st. It stayed tight until the 5th inning when the Tavern exploded for 6 runs in the top of the inning led by a homerun from Lee Pollak. ESB pissed because they were losing to the last place team and the fact that the umpire was making tough calls scored 3 in the 5th and rallied for 2 in the bottom of the 7th. The Tavern held off the rally ending their 2 month winless drought, and ESB went home to wonder how they could beat the Turtles one week and lose to the Tavern the next. Anything can happen in the Pikesville Men's Softball League.

Pikesville Senior High Field #5
Kings vs Palmgard
Game 1
Palmgard 8  Kings 4
Mike Johnson tossed a solid 7 innings in leading Palmgard to an 8-4 opening game win over the Kings. Gabe Silber's 2-out 2-RBI triple gave Palmgard 2-0 lead in t-1st. Palmgard built lead to 4-0 in the t-4th on a Silber (game 1-2,3 RBI,3B,SF) SF. Kings got on the board in b-4th via a Chuck Grant hit and an Alan Varhaftik SF. Kings rallied to tie score 4-4 in b-4th scoring 3 runs after 2 outs on RBI singles by Kenny Salzman (game 1-3,1 R,1 RBI), Mike Pusateri (game 1-3,1 RBI), and Dave Mize (game 2-3,1 RBI,3B). Palmgard re-took lead in t-6th scoring 4 times. The key hits were a Jim Davis (game 3-3,3 R,1 RBI,2B) RBI double and Jim Silvestri (game 2-3,3 R,2 RBI,2B,HR) 2-run HR.

Game 2
Kings 16  Palmgard 6
Chuck Grant pitched a complete game in both ends of the doubleheader and was masterful in game 2, scattering 9 hits against the tough Palmgard lineup. The Kings took game 2 16-6, but the game was much closer than the final score indicated. Kings got on the board in the t-1st on Dave Mize's first career league HR, a monster shot to LCF. Palmgard matched the Mize shot when Jim Davis   launched a shot of his own, a 2-RBI HR in b-1st. In Davis' next plate appearance, Grant walked him to start the b-4th. Davis would later score on Jeff Sacks SF to RCF. Palmgard's Marty Ellis was sailing along with a 3-1 lead after 4 innings, allowing just 3 hits to that point. The Kings bats exploded, though, in the final 3 innings, generating 19 hits and 15 runs with 4 runs in t-5th, 5 runs in t-6th, and concluding with 6 runs in t-7th. 17 of the 19 hits were singles, with just 2 doubles during the onslaught. Mark Benjamin and Bob Hansen hit HR's for Palmgard in b-7th to account for the final 3 runs from Palmgard.

Kings players getting 3 hits consisted of Chuck Grant (3-4, 2 R,2B), Mike Pusateri (3-4,3 R,3 RBI), Josh Frederick (3-4,3 R,1 RBI), Jan Katzen (3-4,2 R,2 RBI), and Mike Herr (3-4,1 R,2 RBI). The Kings were errorless in game 2 and got some outstanding defense from shortstop Pusateri. Palmgard went 21-for-59 (.355) against Grant in the doubleheader, with 4 of the hits being HR's.

Palmgard also had their share of outstanding defense including great infield plays by SS Dave Kopel, 2B Jeff Webster, and RCF Greg Manara. Offensive stars for Palmgard in game 2 were Davis (1-2,2 R,2 RBI,HR,W) and Bob Hansen (2-3,1 R,2 RBI, HR).
