PMS Week 14 / July 7, 2002 Highlights

Pikesville Middle School Field #1
Kings vs GorgeousWatches.com
Game 1
GW 11  Kings 7
GorgeousWatches.com took the lead in the t-1st and although the Kings would pull close, GW maintained the lead throughout en route to an 11-7 win. Russ Seamster (game 1-3,2 R,2 RBI,HR,IW) crushed a 2 out 2-RBI HR to RF to give GW 2-0 1st inning lead. GW added 3 unearned runs in t-2nd to take 5-0 lead. Kings rallied for 4 runs in b-3rd with key hits an RBI single by Dave Roogow and a 2 out 3-RBI double by Dave Mize. Homeruns by Jon Koman (2-RBI) and Mark Rosenstein (1-RBI) in t-6th extended GW lead to 8-4. Kings scored a solo run in b-6th on Chuck Grant's SF to RCF, but GW came back with 3 runs in t-7th to get comfortable with an 11-5 lead. GW got 2 out RBI singles that inning from Andrew Rosenstein (game 2-3,1 R,1 RBI,W) and Joel Koman (game 2-4,1 R,1 RBI). Kings did tack on 2 runs in b-7th, but fell short 11-7.

Kings were sloppy on defense, committing an uncharacteristic 5 errors that allowed the batter to reach base. GW's Jeff Harris scattered 11 hits in picking up his 12th pitching win of the season. He only allowed 1 extra base hit (2B) in the game on Fenway. Kings Shilo Merwitz went 3-for-3, while Jan Katzen went 2-3 as the only multi-hit Kings batters.

Game 2
Kings 11  GW 9
The Kings trailed by 1 run with 2 outs and a runner on first base in the t-7th, but 3 straight hits produced 3 runs and the Kings held on, despite a huge GW threat in the bottom of the inning to win 11-9. This game was filled with trash-talking and base running excitement. In the game, GW batters went 18-for-33 against Kings starter Chuck Grant, but grounded into 2 doubleplays (6th and 7th inning), had 2 runners thrown out at the plate from the outfield (3rd and 4th inning), and had a batter stuck with a batted ball when the bases were loaded (3rd inning).

In this game, Kings took advantage of GW's only error in the t-2nd leading to 2 runs and the early lead. The b-3rd started with 3 straight singles by Ricky Schreiber, Mark Rosenstein, and Jeff Harris (RBI). One out later Larry Henderson singled to load the bases and Joel Koman's single (RBI) tied the game and kept the bases loaded. Lefthanded slugger Russ Seamster smashed a wicked  line shot that struck Koman while he was still on the base, thus the ball was still in play and after some controversy about the rule, Jeff Harris was allowed to score from 3B with the 3rd run of the inning, while Henderson was kept at 2B and Seamster placed on 1B. Andrew Rosenstein followed the controversy with a single to LF, but LF Dave Mize's throw to home was handled on the short hop by C Mike Herr who applied the tag to Henderson. In b-4th, Glen Ackman and Marty singled to start inning. They both advanced 1 base on Jon Koman's flyout to RCF. Ricky Schreiber followed with a single to LCF scoring Ackman, but Alan Varhaftik's throw home nailed Marty. GW carried 4-2 lead into t-5th. Kings started their t-5th with consecutive singles by Mike Pusateri, Herr, and Todd Katz (RBI). Dave Roogow's pinch-hit fielder's choice tied score 4-4.  Kenny Salzman singled Roogow to 3B and Jan Katzen hit a SF to RCF to put Kings ahead. A 2-out RBI double by Dave Mize and a 2-run HR by Grant gave Kings 8-4 lead. The lead was very brief as GW scored 5 runs in b-5th to take lead back 9-8. Key hits by GW in that inning were a 2 out single by Russ Seamster and a 2-RBI opposite field HR by Glen Ackman. The trash talk escalated when GW re-took this lead. In Kings t-7th, Todd Katz led off the inning with a single up the middle off of the glove of Harris. Following 2 flyouts, Jan Katzen singled to CF and Dave Mize singled to RF, scoring Katz with the tie run. Grant followed Mize with a shot into LCF that went into the trees, but the ball came right back down the hill, and although Katzen and Mize were able to score, Grant had to be held at third base. The Kings were unable to score Grant, but did now hold 11-9 lead. In b-7th, Tony Luna, pinch-hitting for Harris to lead off the inning singled to CF. Craig Dlin followed Luna with a shot thru the box, but Grant was able to get a glove on the ball, slowing it up enough for SS Mike Pusateri to field, step on 2B for the force and fire to 1B to double up Dlin. The Kings seemingly were in good shape, but GW would simply not give up. Larry Henderson and Joel Koman both singled to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the person of slugger Seamster, but Seamster smashed another liner to 1B--this one was snagged by Josh Frederick for the final out in a very exciting and loud game.

Hitting stars in game 2 for GW were Henderson (game 3-3,1 R,1 W), Joel Koman (2-3,2 RBI,SF), Russ Seamster (2-4,1 R,1 RBI), Glen Ackman (2-3,2 R,2 RBI, HR), Ricky Schreiber (2-3,1 R,1 RBI), and Jeff Harris (2-2,1 R, 1 RBI). For the Kings Dave Mize (3-4,2 R,2 RBI,2B), Chuck Grant (2-4,1 R,4 RBI,3B,HR), Mike Pusateri (2-3,1 R), and Todd Katz (2-2,1 R,1 RBI,W).

The defense for both teams was solid in game 2 with each team committing just 1 error. The Kings turned 2 groundout DP's, while GW turned 1.Jeff Harris and Chuck Grant both tossed complete games in both ends of the doubleheader. Despite the teams splitting their 4 regular season match-ups, GW won the season series by 1 run (36-35).

Jilly's Turtles vs Eastern Savings Bank
Game 1
Turtles 14  ESB 7
Facing a team that surprisingly split with the champs just two weeks ago, the Turtles were trying to make sure that they won the season series against Eastern Savings Bank this week. And they did, but it was anything but easy...

For the second time in three weeks ESB took on the mighty Turtles with star pitcher Bruce Eisenberg returning after missing the previous match-up.  The Turtles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead off of ESB pitcher Ted Winner.  ESB tied it in the bottom of the second on monster back to back home runs by Shmuel Luxenberg and Mark (no not Rabbi) Loeb.  The Turtles then regained the lead in the bottom of the second the key hit being a 2 strike 2 out 2 run single by second baseman Regie.  ESB fought their way back with 2 runs in the top of the third but there was no stopping the Turtles this day.  They came back with 4 in the bottom of the third.  ESB scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to close in and make the score 10-6.  The Turtles put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with four more runs. Umpire Ethan Yankolow filled in for injured umpire Bob Hollis and had  difficulty adjusting to the modified pitch strike zone..After several high strikes called against both teams, Yankolow finally caught on, but it was too late for ESB,  Final score 2 TD's to one (14-7).

Hitting stars for the Turtles included Harry Schevker, who had a stiff back and was questionable until late Saturday evening. Harry went 2-4, with 3 rbi's and 2 runs scored. Leadoff hitter, Robbie Ressin, chipped in with two extra base hits, scoring 2 runs and knocking in one. Eisey improves to 14-3 with the win as Teddy Winner suffered the loss.

Game 2
Turtles 13  ESB 7
In game two ESB threw Ted Winner out there for a second game and quickly jumped all over Eisey for a 7-0 lead stringing 8 hits together.  That would be the last time the "Rabbi's" team would cross the plate as Eisey shut them down the rest of the way. The Turtles put up single runs in the first and second and going into the  fourth inning ESB held the lead 7-2.  In the top of the fourth Ted started to tire  and cut the lead to 7-6 and David Finkelstein(the Rabbi) came in in relief. By the time the inning was over the Turtles had a 8-7 lead. Turtles scored 6 unearned runs on a variety of errors in the sixth to put away ESB and sweep the doubleheader. The 2 victories widened the gap between the Turtles and Cannons and The Watches as both teams split their respective games.... leaving only Palmgard one game behind by virtue of their 2 wins over The Tavern.

Leading hitters for the Hard Shells in game two were: Lee Eidelberg, going 3-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored...Mark Summerfield, who went deep for a 3 run homer, along with 2 walks and a single. Dave Sandler, going 3-4, with a double and 2 runs scored along with Jeff Michaelson, who was 3-3, with a walk and 2rbi's.

What would have been a very special day for the Turtles turned out quite ugly as they almost had a bench clearing brawl with the Cannons Johnny Edelman over the ownership of a bat.

Pikesville Middle School Field #4
Sky & Sky Inc vs Havana Club Cannons
Game 1
HCC 7  Sky 6
The Havana Club Cannons split a pair of games with Sky &Sky this morning, winning 7-6 and losing 6-1. The Cannons were victors as the home team in game one, and a grand slam by Steve Henneman opened the scoring in the first inning. Brad Rosenberg followed with a gapper into leftcenter, and it was 5-0. After Sky picked up two in the top of the second, the Cannons got hits from Tom Paulshock and Gerry Edelman leading off the bottom of the inning. Dan Kassel walked to load the bases, and with two outs Evan Kreitzer doubled two runs home. Tom Paulshock made these runs stand up despite some erratic fielding behind him on the sandy, field four infield. Paulshock went to a 7-4 record on the season, and beat Sky twice by a single run.

This game seemed over after the b-1st as he Cannons used 2 walks and an error to load the bases for Steve Henneman. He promptly launched a two-out pop which tailed away from the Sky & Sky RCF's glove to kick the scoring off with a grand slam. Speedy Brad Rosenberg followed suit with a line drive between LF and LCF which rolled to the next field allowing him to just beat the throw home and tack on a 5th run in the inning. Realizing that the gap needed to be closed, Zach Scherr lined his own shot for a 2-run triple closing the gap to within 3. The Cannons answered with two of their own reestablishing their 5-run advantage. Then Larry Newman seemed to put things together and quiet The Cannons bats. Meanwhile his team started to support him with three in the 4th and one in the t-6th. However, Tom Paulshock closed the door in the t-7th as the game ended 7-6. Larry Newman got the loss. Paulshock again stifled the top of Sky & Sky's order as batters 1 thru 6 produced one measly infield hit in 36 plate appearances over a 2 game stretch. Alan Smith went 3 for 3(2 2B,1B) 2RBI and Zach Scherr added 3RBI(3B,1B).

Game 2
Sky 6  HCC 1
As the visitors in game two the Cannons scored a run on an Evan Kreitzer triple in inning one. However there were no timely hits for the Cannons in game two. They left seven runners on base in the last three innings alone. Meanwhile Sky & Sky was adding single runs in the third, fourth, and sixth to go along with the three they secured in the first. It was a mixture of line drives, dinks and dunks and a few sac flies for Sky to do the job. Mark Yokel was the victim of non-support but pitched well. His record on the year is now 9-2.

Game 2 saw a much lower score despite spotty defense from Sky & Sky. The Cannons gained an unearned run in the t-1st as Evan Kreitzer skipped a single past Eric Gertner in RF. A hustling Ernie Stephenson relayed to Eric Gertner who nailed Kreitzer at the plate, allowing just the one unearned run to score. Zach Scherr seemed to take charge from there as his teammates regained the lead in the b-1st. Four consecutive singles followed by an Alan Smith double plated three. Sky & Sky threatened again with three leadoff singles in the 3rd. However, Yokel tightened the screws allowing just one to score on a SF.  Another SF from Eric Gertner in the b-4th stretched Sky's lead to four, while Scherr continued his mastery from the mound. A meaningless solo dinger for Sky & Sky completed the scoring as Scherr got the win and Mark Yokel took the loss 6-1. Notables for Sky & Sky were David Kowitz with 3 hits, while Evan Kreitzer was the only batter with two hits for The Cannons.
