PMS Week 16 / July 21, 2002 Highlights

Pikesville Middle School Field #1
Cannons vs GorgeousWatches.com
Game 1
HCC 11 GW 7
In game #1 Georgeous Watches jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a 2 RBI line drive single off the bat of Glen Ackman and an article that was published by the late great Ted Williams on the art of hitting. The Ted Williams article presented by manager Andrew Rosenstein before the game seemed to help until the 4th inning when Havana Club put up an 8 spot and batted around to take a 11-6 lead. G.W. scored only 3 runs the rest of the way as Havana Club won game 1 by the score of 11-7. Ted Williams didn't exactly help G.W's 1-4 batters as they were a pathetic Sam Horn like 3/14 while the 10-12 batters (Mark Rosentein, Ricky Schrieber, and Bobby Morrow) were a combined Ichiro like 4/6. Only Glen Ackman, Joel Koman, and Ricky Schreiber had more than one hit off of Pitcher Mark O'Kell.

Mark Yokel was victorious for the Havana Club. outstanding defense was played by the entire Havana Club outfield. Steve Henneman was 3-4 w/a hr and 4rbi. Brad Rosenberg pitched in going 3-3 while scoring 2runs.

Game 2
GW 16 HCC 7
In game two, the Watches bounced back to beat Tom Paulshock and the Cannons 16-7. The Havana Club defense was not particularly sharp in game two while battling the difficult elements that Fenway provides.

With a "must win" situation in order to stay within striking distance of first place, G.W. got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first inning scoring 7 runs as the first 8 batters reached base either by hit or by BB. After scoring 7 runs in the 1st inning thanks to a bases clearing 3b by Glen Ackman, G.W. then fell asleep until the bottom of the 6th when G.W. exploded for 8 runs in the 6th helped by a flurry of 5 straight hits off of the bats of Tony Luna, Russ Dlin, Glen Ackman, Andrew Rosenstein, and Joel Koman. Pitcher Jeff Harris closed the door in the 7th inning as G.W. won game 2 by the score of 16-8 and stay 2 game back of First Place.

Key players for G.W.: Glen Ackman (4/6 5 RBI), Joel Koman (5/6 4 singles and a 3b), Jon Koman (4/6 H.R. over the tree at Fenway, 1 K, 1 BB. 3 Singles), and the Ted Williams article on the Art Of Hitting.

Pikesville Middle School Field #2
Kings vs Sky & Sky Inc
Game 1
Kings 10 Sky 4
Chuck Grant seemed to rule the day from the mound and the batter's box as The Kings took game 1 from Sky & Sky. Kings got on the board in the t-1st. 3B Kenny Salzman led off with a double and scored when SS Jan Katzen's infield grounder was mishandled. Alan Varhaftik would later drive Katzen home with a SF. Eric Gertner's 2nd inning double appeared to get Sky & Sky on the board, but Alan Smith pulled up lame rounding 3rd and both runners got stuck in no man's land. Grant easily got the 3rd out to protect his team's 2-0 lead. Then in the b-4th Sky & Sky struck for four runs. A walk and single by the Kowitz brothers (David and Brian respectively) started the inning. The previously injured Smith got David in on a SF. With 2 outs, Joel Wax then doubled Brian in and Gertner left no doubt with his next at bat getting a 2-run dinger that split the gap in CF. Sky led 4-2 entering the Kings t-6th inning. With 1 out, Dave Mize singled and Grant connected for a long homerun to LCF. Following another flyout, consecutive 2-out singles by Shilo Merwitz, Josh Frederick, and Todd Katz (RBI) along with a throwing error put the Kings ahead 6-4. Kings scored 4 more runs in t-7th, beginning the inning with consecutive singles by Marc Goldstein, pinch hitter Mike Herr, and Kenny Salzman (RBI). These hits were followed by an infield error and a 3-run HR by Mize. Following a single by Brian Sky in b-6th, Grant retired the final 6 Sky hitters in order.

Sky & Sky's attack was led by Brian Kowitz (2-3, 1 R,1 RBI, 2B), Eric Gertner (2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2B, HR). The only Kings multi-hit players were Dave Mize (3-4,2 R,3 RBI, HR) and Josh Frederick (2-3,1 R).

Game 2
Kings 15 Sky 3 (5 Innings)
Game 2 allowed Grant to pick right back up where he left off. Sky & Sky took 1-0 lead in t-1st on a 2B by David Kowitz and an RBI single by Brian Sky. Kings Kenny Salzman again led the Kings off with a hit in b-1st. One out later, a Dave Mize single and Chuck Grant 2-RBI double put Kings ahead to stay. A 7 run Kings b-2nd set the tone for the rest of the game. Key hits in b-2nd were consecutive RBI doubles by Ken Zalis, Dave Roogow, and Salzman. The coupe de grace was a 2-out bases loaded triple by Alan Varhaftik. All 7 of the Kings runs in the inning came after 2 outs. In the b-3rd Kings LF Dave Mize gunned down Brian Sky at the plate to end the threat and keep the Kings comfortably ahead. Zach Scherr helped his cause by tripling in a run in the b-5th and scored on an errant throw. But that is as close as Sky & Sky would come in this 5 inning blowout. Kings ended the game early on RBI hits by Marc Goldstein, Mike Herr, and a 250 foot single by Dave Roogow to score Herr from 3B with the slaughter rule run.

Brian Sky was the only multi-hit Sky guy with a 3-for-3 game. Kings multi-hit players were Kenny Salzman (2-3,2 R,1 RBI, 2B), Dave Mize (3-3,2 R,1 RBI,2B), Josh Frederick (2-3,1 R), and Dave Roogow (3-3,2 R,2 RBI,2B).

Kings Chuck Grant improved his record to 9-5 with wins in both games. Although Jan Katzen was only mentioned above for reaching base on an error, he did contribute to the Kings sweep by bringing the Gatorade cooler filled with lemonade. Sky had to play game 2 with just 9 players as Eric Gertner and Brian Kowitz had to leave after game 1.

Pikesville Middle School Field #3
Eastern Savings Bank vs Kelly & Associates
Game 1
ESB 16 K&A 10
ESB was wary of its opponent Kelly and Associates because the last time the two teams played ESB had to pull out victories in the seventh inning in both games. Their fears turned to reality when Kelly jumped on ESB for three runs in the first and three runs in the second. But in the bottom of the second ESB got down to business and scored 12 runs. Every player in the line-up scored in that inning. The big hit in the inning was a home run by first base man T. Friedman. ESB's starting pitcher David Finkelstein held Kelly in shock until the sixth inning when Kelly scored 3 runs to cut the lead to 13 to 10. But DH Ted Winner hit his second mammoth home run (his second of the game) to make the score 15/10. And ESB walked away with a hard fought victory. Hitting stars of the first game were Ted Winner with 2 home runs and Dan Guttman with 2 hits and a walk.

Game 2
ESB 16 K&A 2
In game 2 ESB jumped to a quick four run lead in the top of the first and never looked back. They tacked on 3 in the third, 6 in the fourth and 3 in the third, while starting pitcher, Ted Winner was dominating again holding Kelly to single runs in the third and fourth innings. The game was called after five with the final score ESB 16 and Kelly 2. Hitting stars of game 2 for ESB were Dan Guttman, Mike Beverly and Mark Loeb who all hit home runs. SS Johnny Feldman, Mike Beverly, Eric Roskes and David Finkelstein had 2 hits each. ESB will be playing the Kings next week and looking forward to the playoffs.

Pikesville Middle School Field #4
Palmgard vs Jilly's Turtles
Game 1
Palmgard 8  Turtles 7
For the 1st time all season the Jilly's Turtles have surrendered the top spot in the league. Palmgard, who has been nipping at their heels all year finally got a chance to face the champs and did not waste the opportunity. A double header sweep (8-7 and 10-5) did the damage with only one week remaining. The only hope for the Turtles is for them to sweep N.E.K. and to get Georgeous Watches to do the same against Palmgard.

In game one the Turtles came off the rain postponed week flat and Palmgard took advantage...jumping in front 8-0 behind Marty Ellis's good location on the mound. In the 5th, the Turtles started to put together consecutive hits, but rallies kept falling short without a timely hit or a spectacular play or throw from the air-tight Palmgard defense. The Turtles scored 2 in the 5th on a bases loaded single thru the middle by Detour Dave,,,he was promptly throw out at the plate by Jim Davis to end the threat. In the 6th, Harry Schevker hit a line drive 3-run homer into left-center to cut the lead to three...In the 7th, Mark Summerfield led off and reached on an error. Dave Sandler singled to left...than Rob Gould singled to right bringing in run 6. With none out and two on Reggie Ellis popped out...Michaelson fouled out than Eisey (3-3 with a run scored and an rbi) brought home Sandler with run number 7. Leadoff hitter Rob Ressin worked the count than lined a head high shot that was destined for center to tie the game. Some-how Ellis got his glove on it, gathered himself, and threw out the speedy Ressin to end the contest.

Game 2
Palmgard 10  Turtles 5
In game two it was more of the same...Palmgard scored 3 in the 1st and 4 in the 3rd to go up 7-0 behind Kevin Oliner. The Turtles came roaring back however with a combination of hits, walks and errors to post a 4-spot and climb back in it 7-4 after four. Palmgard quickly responded scoring 3 more in the 5th to put the game out of reach going away 10-5. It was the 1st time this season that the Turtles have dropped both games. Eisey was the hard luck loser in both games...while Marty Ellis won both of his starts against Jilly's while Kevin Oliner evened his record at 1-1 vs. the Hard Shells this year.

Pikesville Senior High Field #5
Mount Washington Tavern  vs N.E.K. Entertainment
Game 1
MWT 13 NEK 12 (8 Innings)
The Tavern started the game off strong with 4 runs in the top of the 1st. Led by a Howard Goldberg 2run Homer to left center. NEK answered with 2 in the top of the second and 2 more in the 3rd to even the score. Another 2run bomb to center field by Howard Goldberg gave the Tavern the lead again in the bottom of the 3rd to go up by two and continue the see-saw game. NEK exploded for 7 runs in the top of the 5th inning to go up 11-7. They were led by "Kenny" who hit 2 homeruns on the day and played a great third base. Lee Pollak's 2rbi single in the bottom of the 6th gave the Tavern a 12-11 lead. The highlight of the season came in the top of the 6th when "Jason" for NEK hit a blast to straight away centerfield. Jason Ott running full speed with his back to the diamond made his best Willie Mays impression by lunging over his shoulder and coming up with an awesome snow cone catch. Moving on to the top of the 8th inning....NEK made a bid for the go ahead winning run in extra innings but had their runner gunned out at home plate by shortstop Jon Goldman for the 3rd out. MWT Catcher Chad Birenbaum made an awesome diving catch, blocked the plate and tagged the runner out. Then scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th with a leadoff triple. Chad was knocked in for the game winner by David Stein who roped a bomb to centerfield for the game winner.

Game 2
MWT 9 NEK 5
Game 2 started off the same way with the Tavern building an early lead off of singles and good base running. The tavern got off to a 5-2 lead but NEK bounced back to bet within 1 off of homeruns by Bern and Neal. The game was put away for good in the top of the 5th when the tavern scored 4runs for insurance.
