The Jilly's Turtles continued to hold on to the top spot in the 1st round of the playoffs at the sauna-like Randallstown quad today. In a repeat match against #8 NEK, the Turtles scored early and often to win in five innings 13-1.

Game one was over just after 10:00 AM as the Turtles scored 4 in the 1st, 4 in the 2nd and 4 more in the 4th to hand NEK its first loss in their first ever playoff appearance. Eisey coming off a one-week layoff was around the plate and allowed just the one run to record his1st post season win of the year. Ricky Farley got back on track with a big double-header going 2-2 with a line-drive three-run homer in the 1st inning, a bases loaded walk in the 2nd and a single to knock in one in the 4th. Rick had 5 rbi's and caught everything in sight in left-center. Both leadoff hitter, Rob Ressin and 2nd place swinger, Harry Shevker reached base in their three plate appearances. Ressin went 1-1 with three runs scored (2 BB and a double), Shevker (single, double, BB with three runs scored).

WP- Jeff Harris    LP- Ted Winner
Gorgeous Watches began their quest to get back to the title game by defeating a gritty ESB team by the final of 10-3. G.W. got on the board in the first inning when Russ Dlin singled to right to score his brother Craig Dlin to take an early 1-0 lead. That lead increased in the second inning as G.W. put up 5 more runs thanks in part to 3 straight hits to start the inning off of the bats of Joel Koman, Jon Koman and Russ Seamster. E.S.B. then committed 3 straight errors to help G.W. extended their lead to 7-2 after 2 innings. ESB had their chances to make the game close, but they stranded 5 runners on base in the next 2 innings and could not get any closer. After a few controversial calls that went against G.W., the team took their weekly dose of Ritalin to calm down and took care of business by advancing into the second round by defeating ESB 10-3.

Randallstown High School Field #3
Sky & Sky Inc (6) at Palmgard (3)  9
WP- Marty Ellis     LP- Larry Newman
Sixth seeded Sky & Sky faced third seeded Palmgard in a rematch of last year's first round playoff game. Both teams got things going early in the game. Sky & Sky used four hits to push across three runs and jump out to the early lead. But Palmgard bounced right back as two OF errors helped them tie the score at three. Sky & Sky manufactured a run in the t-2nd as Joel Wax led off with a 2B and came around to score of Alan Smith's SF. In the t-3rd Brian Kowitz mile high pop-up was mishandled and he came around to score on a Brian Sky single. Alan Smith added one in the t-4th with a solo shot to LF, and David Kowitz followed suit in the t-5th to increase the lead to four. Palmgard struck back in the b-5th with three of their own. Greg Manara led off with a double and four of the next five batters singled. An error by the SS kept the inning going and Palmgard pulled to within one. Sky & Sky's Kowitz went to work again as Brian Kowitz singled home his speedy brother all the way from first base to add an insurance run which could prove to be pivotal. With their backs to the wall Grailen Archie and Dave Koppel led off with two base knocks which set the stage for Jeff Sacks. He went yard over the left fielder's head for the walk off, 3-run homerun. It was his third homerun in his last six at-bats against Sky & Sky, to go along with 12 RBI in that timeframe. Marty Ellis gained the win and Larry Newman took the loss. Hitting stars for Palmgard were Grailen Archie who went 4-4 with two runs & Gabe Silber 2-2,BB. Sky & Sky hitting stars were David Kowitz 3-4,HR,2B,1B,3 runs, Brian Kowitz 2-4,2rbi,2runs, and Brian sky who added two hits.

Kings (5) 12 at Havana Club Cannons (4) 6
WP- Chuck Grant    LP- Tom Paulshock
The Kings surprised the Cannons in the tournament opener, taking advantage of 6 Cannons errors en-route to a 12-6 victory. Kings scored 3 runs in t-1st on just 1 hit. Cannons got 1 run back in the b-1st. Johnny Edelman started the inning with a single and 1 out later scored on Brad Rosenberg's triple, but Rosenberg tripped rounding 3rd base and was tagged out, effectively ending a rally. Cannons scored 4 more runs in b-2nd to take a 5-3 lead. RBI hits in the inning came from EH Mark Yokel, P Tom Paulshock, and LCF Johnny Edelman. Cannons carried the 5-3 lead into inning 5. Kings scored 3 runs in t-5th, starting with a 3B Jan Katzen SF. A Paulshock fielding error with 2 outs put 2 runners in scoring position, and Marc Goldstein's single to RF scored both runners to put the Kings ahead 6-5. Kings added 5 more runs in t-6th. 2 out consecutive hits by Shilo Merwitz, Josh Frederick(2B), Katzen(RBI), and Todd Katz(RBI), padding the lead. Cannons Steve Henneman's SF in b-6th made the score 11-6, but Kings added the final run of the game in t-7th on Chuck Grant's 2 out RBI single. A little trash talking developed between the 2 opponents with 2 outs in the b-7th, but Grant was able to retire the final hitter to send the Kings traveling to RHS field #1 to meet Jilly's Turtles.

Multi-hit Kings in game 1 were Dave Mize (2-3,1 R,W), Josh Frederick (2-3,1 R,2B), and Todd Katz (2-3,1 R,1 RBI). Only multi-hit Cannons player was Johnny Edelman (2-3,1 R,1 RBI). Grant pitched effectively for the Kings allowing just 8 hits and only 2 earned runs.

Round 2

Randallstown High School Field #1
Kings(5) 13 at Jilly's Turtles (1) 17
WP- Bruce Eisenberg   LP- Chuck Grant
In game two...The Kings, fresh off an upset victory over the #4 Cannons...came down to field one with momentum. They jumped all over Eisey and the Turtles scoring 4 times before the Hard Shells could come to the plate. Kings leadoff hitter Kenny Salzman coaxed a walk and Ken Zalis singled. One out later, Chuck Grants single brought home Salzman. With 2 outs Shilo Merwitz singled (RBI) and Josh Frederick also singled (2 RBI's). The Kings lead was short-lived as Jilly's struck right back with a big 6 run answer, with Lee Eidelberg going the opposite way for a two-run homer. Mark Summerield knocked in the 3rd run with a double, followed by Detour Dave's shot right off the bag at first to tie the game. Rob Gould followed with a two-run single to end the inning. The Kings jumped right back on top with 3 in t-2nd to take 7-6 lead. Ken Salzman's RBI single scored Todd Katz with the 1st run of the inning. With 1 out and runners on the corners, Ken Zalis hit a flyball to shallow LCF. Mike Herr, the runner on 3B challenged the throwing arm of LCF Ricky Farley. Farley's throw to the plate beat Herr, but Herr was able to slide under the tag of C Warren Scudder with the tie run. An ensuing throwing error allowed Salzman to score the 7th run of the game. But, once again the Turtles had a big inning scoring 5 in the b-2nd...with Mark Summerfield hitting a three-run shot just inside the left-field cone to take the lead 11-7. After a scoreless 3rd, the Kings scored 1 in the t-4th. Todd Katz led off the inning with a double and scored on Mike Herr's single to RF. Kings scored 3 more times in the t-5th to tie the game 11-11. In that inning, Ken Zalis led off with a HR. Dave Mize singled and Alan Varhaftik hit a 2-run HR that tied the score. The Turtles, however, took the stuffing out of the Kings posting a five-spot in the bottom of the 5th, getting rbi singles from Rob Ressin, Harry Shevker who wound up scoring all the way from 1st on a double-error and Reggie Ellis to take a 16-11 lead. The Kings, however, still did not give up and got two back in the 6th, but it wasn't enough. A goose egg in the top of the 7th ended the match-up as Eisey and Chuck Grant gutted it out...Final 17-13.

Hitting stars for Jilly's Turtles were Rob Ressin (2-3,1 R,1 RBI), Harry Shevker (2-4,3 R,1 RBI), Lee Eidelberg (3-4,3 R,4 RBI, HR), Warren Scudder (2-4,2 R), Detour Dave Sandler (3-4,2 R,1 RBI,2B), and Reggie Ellis (2-3,1 R,1 RBI). Bruce Eisenberg 7 IP, 40 AB, 19 H,13 R,10 ER, 2 2B,0 3B,2 HR

Eisenberg pitched a complete game despite injuring his back in the 1st inning. Kings Ken Zalis left the game early with an undisclosed upper body injury. Each team committed 5 errors.

Next week the Turtles will face the #2 Gorgeous Watches...a team they have not faced since the 1st week of the regular season. It was that same team who did Jilly's a favor by knocking off Palmgard in the regular season final week to allow them to capture the regular season championship. It is also a rematch of last years championship game!

WP- Jeff Harris   LP- Marty Ellis
In a rematch of last years semi-final game, G.W. used 3 of legendary UCLA coach John Wooden' s "keys to success" (confidence, skill, and poise) to strive past Palmgard and advance in the winners bracket by the final of 9-4. After studying all week to figure out how to motivate his team, Manager Andrew Rosenstein broke out an article written by the legendary John Wooden from the New York Times dated December 2nd, 1973. Down 1-0 in the third inning, G.W. used "skill " as Kevin Kahringer and Jeff Harris started off the inning with back-to-back hits. Craig Dlin then followed with a clutch RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. After Larry Henderson grounded out, Tony Luna untied the game with an RBI single to score Harris to take the lead 2-1. G.W. then used "pose" throughout the 4th, and 5th innings by playing solid defense to keep a 1- run lead heading into the bottom of the 6th inning. In the bottom of the 6th, G.W. scored 4 insurance runs to stretch their lead to 9-4.

Key Hitters for G.W.: Larry Henderson (3/5), Russ Dlin (4/6, 2B), Andrew Rosenstein (4/6 3 RBI, 3 Runs Scored), Joel Koman 4/5 (4 RBI, 4 Runs Scored) and John Wooden.

Eastern Savings Bank(7)  4 at Sky &Sky Inc(6) 3
WP- Ted Winner    LP- Larry Newman
Eastern Saving Bank strolled up to face Sky & Sky in the 2nd round game of the playoffs after losing to Georgeouswatches.com. In the b-1st Sky & Sky struck for two runs. The dreaded leadoff walk was almost wiped out on a force play, however a controversial safe call at 2nd base allowed the inning to stretch on. Two SF accounted for the early 2-0 Sky & Sky lead. Larry Newman was cruising through the first two innings, but Tzvi Friedman, and Mark Loeb had seen enough as each hit solo homeruns to open the 3rd and tie the score. Sky & Sky regained the lead in the b-  th with another Scott Felton SF, but ESB answered in the t-6th. Johnny Feldman and Russ Zappocosta each singled and Alan Lazerow tied the score with a SF. Chris Zoeller singled in the go ahead run. It appeared fortunes would change as Mike Rottenberg drilled a liner off the shinbone of ESB pitcher Ted Winner, but he had the presence of mind to recover the ball and throw out the batter. In the b-7th Winner had to face the heart of Sky & Sky's power bats and went through them 1-2-3, gaining the victory and again handing Newman a hard-luck loss. Hitting stars for ESB were Johnny Feldman 2-2,BB & Chris Zoeller who went 2-3. However, Ted Winner deserves a tremendous amount of credit allowing just three Sky & Sky hits in the game.
