Pikesville Middle School Field #2
Palmgard vs Eastern Savings Bank
Game 1
Eastern Savings Bank 8  Palmgard 7 (8 Innings)
2nd inning: with 2 on and 0 out Smooley Luxenburg smacked a 2 run triple but this was just the beginning of a 4 run 2nd inning to take the lead 4-1. Then down 7-4 in the bottom of the 6th Aaron Shifrin started off a 3 run inning lead by Glen Broder who contributed with a 2 run single to tie things up at 7-7 heading into the 7th. Palmgard had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the 7th when they loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to get the key 2 out hit.  Palmgard held in their half of the 7th to send the game into extra innings. Ted Winner (aka Harry Houdini because of his ability to magically get out of jam after jam ) who also struck out 4 today shut down the Palmgard offense in the top of the eighth.  So with the game on the line Aaron Shifrin led off the bottom of the 8th with a single.  Smooley Luxenburg advanced him to second base on a deep fly to right .  Then with 2 outs and the winning run on second base Kory Rosenberg stepped to the plate and hit a clutch single scoring Aaron Shifrin with the go ahead and winning run.

Key hitters for Palmgard were Jim Davis (2-3, HR, R, 3RBI, BB), Mickey Golden  (2-2, 2B, R, RBI, 2BB), and Mark Benjamin (1-2, 2RBI).

Game 2
Palmgard 9  Eastern Savings Bank 8
ESB started the game off just where they left off game 1 by scoring 1 early run in the first. In the 2nd started again by Aaron Shifrin ( who was 6 for 8 today) with a lead off single , Glenn Broder added another 2rbi's with his 3rd hit of the day to cap off a 3 run 2nd. Palmgard was down 4-1 going into the bottom of the 3rd.  Jim Davis and Jim Silvestri each drove in a run as Palmgard scored 3 runs to tie the score at 4. Eastern was quiet for a bit until the 5th  inning , it was tied 4-4  when led by a 2 run shot over the right field fence by Ted Winner capped a 3 run inning to take the lead 7-4. Palmgard answered in the bottom of the 5th with 4 big runs to take a 8-7 lead.  Jim Davis had a key 3 run HR over the fence in right, (which I believe bounced off of the head of the Eastern Savings rightfielder, to make it over the fence).  Bob Hansen followed with an RBI double to give Palmgard the lead for good.  Palmgard scored an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI single off the bat of Dave Kopel. It seemed that this game would come down to the wire just as the 1st game did and it wasn't until the top of the 7th with Palmgard leading 9-7 did the drama begin.  Kory Rosenberg led off with a double to left and then advanced to thirdbase on a deep fly and eventually scored off a sac fly by Ryan Arnott. So with 2 outs down by 1 Aaron Shifrin reached base off an error in deep left center.    Smooley Luxenburg smacked a single to put the tying run on second base, but Eastern couldn't capitalize and wound up losing 9-8.

Key Hitters for Palmgard were Grailen Archie (2-4, 3R), Dave Kopel (2-4, RBI, 2R), Jim Davis (3-3, HR, 2-2B, 4RBI, 2R, BB), Jim Silvestri (2-3, 2B, 2RBI, R, SAC), and Bob Hansen (2-3, 2B, RBI).

C Larry Henderson came out his slump early with a 2-run homer in the first. GW added a run in the third to take a 3-0 lead. After Skye cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the 2nd. RF Russ Dlin drove in Henderson and his brother LC Craig with a single to make the score 5-2 in the top of the 3rd. Game 2
GorgeousWatches.com 13  Sky & Sky 9
Game 2 saw a much close contest, but again a lack of defense proved to be the key. This time Sky & Sky came out of the gates in a hurry, only to see their 4-run advantage shrink to one on a Russ Dlin 3-run shot in the b-1st. Sky took a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the 3rd. But once again GW fought back. C Henderson and LF Tony Luna hit back to back triples to make it 7-4. One out later, RC Glenn Ackman singled to left to make it 7-5 after three innings. Joel Wax tripled one home for Sky & Sky to pad the lead 8-5 in t-4th. In the bottom of the 4th, 2B Mark Rosenstein hit a three-run homer to tie the game at 8-8. Schreiber then singled. C. Dlin forced Schreiber to reach first. Henderson singled to RC and Luna singled to give GW their first lead of the game 9-8. GW would not relinquish the lead from that point.

In the bottom of the 5th, Ackman doubled, 3B Joel Koman singled, Seemster doubled home Ackman. Kevin singled home Koman and M. Rosenstein singled home Seemster (6 RBIs) to give GW a 12-8 lead. Pitcher Jeff Harris continued to get stronger as the game went on. GW added a run in the 6th to make it 13-8. Sky added a run in the top of the 7th to make the final score 13-9.

Sky commited 6 errors in game 2. Jeff Harris(2-1) earned the win and Larry Newman(1-3) took the loss. Kevin Kahriger and Ricky Schreiber each went 2-3 and GW's 2-5 hitters went 2-4 with a single and an extra base knock. Joel Wax again provided the spark for Sky & Sky(2-4 3B 2B), Scott Felton with 2 more doubles and Brain Kowitz and Jonas Needleman had 2 base knocks a piece.

Many GW hitters contributed to the sweep. C. Dlin 4-8 5 runs, Henderson 6-8 4 runs 3B, HR 4 RBIs, R. Dlin 4-8 HR 7 RBIs, M Rosenstein 4-7 HR 3 RBIs,

Cannons appeared to seal their victory with 5 more runs in their half of the 7th inning. Edelman led off the inning with a double and scored on Kassel's 4th hit of the game. RBI singles by Henneman and Jeff Robbins sparked the rally. Now with a 14-8 lead entering the b-7th, the Kings rallied again. Game 2
HC Cannons 6  Kings 3
Cannons took advantage of sloppy Kings defense as the Kings committed 5 errors in the first 3 innings, allowing the Cannons to build a 6-0 lead. A 4 run b-1st inning was keyed by an Evan Kreitzer (game 2-3, 2 R,3 RBI's) 3-run HR shot deep into RF. In Kings t-4th, Jan Katzen led off inning with a double. After advancing to thirdbase on a fly out, Katzen scored on a Chuck Grant SF to LCF. Cannons Tom Paulshock was sailing along with a 3 hitter after 6 innings. Kings, similar to game 1, mounted a final inning threat. Jeff Slutzker tripled and Grant doubled (RBI) to begin inning. With 1 out, Scott Katzen's (game 2-3,1 RBI) RBI single scored Grant, making the score 6-3. Ken Zalis walked, but Paulshock was able to get the next 2 Kings hitters to squash the rally and end the game.

The difference in the game was the stellar defense of the Cannons. They did not commit an error, while turning in several outstanding plays including a running catch by LCF Jeff Kurland (game 2-3,1 R,1 RBI) and a grounder to the hole by SS Dan Kassel. The Kings after committing 5 errors in the first 3 innings, played even with the Cannons and did not commit an error the rest of the way.
