Playoffs Week #2

Playoffs Round 5
Pikesville Senior High School Field #6
Quizno's(1) 9  Havana Club Cannons(3) 5
Quizno's Owings Mills successfully defended their championship for the 2nd consecutive year by once again coming from behind in a rain soaked, muddy field to defeat the Havana Club Cannons by the final score of 9-5.

After a 1 hour delay of raking the field, Quizno's Owings Mills quickly wasted no time by getting on the board in the 1st inning by scoring 2 quick runs to take a 2-0 lead. After Craig Dlin line out to left, Larry Henderson followed with a Single to Center. Tony Luna then doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Russ Dlin then followed with an RBI SAC Fly to take a 1-0 lead. Russ Seamster followed Dlin with an RBI Single to score Luna to take a 2-0 lead. After the Cannons tied the score 2-2 in the top of the 4th on a Dan Kassel 2-RBI HR, Quizno's Owings Mills quickly broke the tie by putting 2 more on the board in the bottom of the 4th to take a 4-2 lead thanks to a Titanic 2-Run H.R. Blast (estimated at close to 400 Feet) by Russ Seamster which put a nice dent into the side of the trailer sitting next to Pikesville H.S. The Cannons fought back in the top of the 6th with 3 runs of their own to take a 5-4 lead. But the "Blue Wave" responded again for the 2nd year in a row by scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th- all with 2 outs- to take a commanding 9-5 lead. In the bottom of the 6th with 2 outs and nobody on base- Tony Luna began the "Tidal Wave" with a single to rightfield. Russ Dlin then followed with a Double to the right center field gap to score a hustling Tony Luna all the way from 1st base to tie the score 5-5. With R. Dlin on 2nd, the Cannons decided to intentionally walk Russ Seamster to put runners on 1st and 2nd base. The Cannons then made a controversial pitching change by pulling Mark Yokel and putting in Tommy Paulshock to face Joel Koman. With Mark Yokel looking on in disgust from the bench, Tommy walked J.Koman on 5 pitches to load the bases for Andrew Rosenstein. With the bases jammed and the score tied, A. Rosenstein patiently walked on 5 pitches of his own to score Russ Dlin from third- a Walk that eventually turned out to be the game winning RBI for Rosenstein. With the score 6-5 and the bases still loaded with 2 Outs, Jon Koman then delivered a game- breaking Single to Left Field to score 2 more runs and make the score 8-5. Todd Pobleets then followed with an RBI Single of his own to extend the lead to 9-5 entering the top of the 7th. With regular- season starting pitcher Jeff Harris in reserve for a possible game #2, Lane Gordon finished off the Cannons in the 7th inning by holding them scoreless as Quizno's Owings Mills celebrated for the 2nd consecutive year as Pikesville Softball League Champions.

Havana Club Cannons Report:
The Havana Club Cannons made it to the championship round for the third time since 1999. Despite numerous rain outs, the Cannons were always above .500, maintaining some consistency as they went from 4-3, to a date in the finals at 16-6. The Cannons split their only regular season doubleheader with first place Quizno's, and felt that the playoffs would prove them a worthy opponent. It certainly appeared to Sky and Sky that the Cannons had it together, as the Havana Club defeated Sky 15-3 in round two, and 15-2 in round four. Long time nemesis City Crab put on their best effort in the playoffs first game behind Bruce Eisenberg, but the Cannons won this match-up 11-8. (Brian Forthofer walk off homerun). The round five game versus Quizno's was beautifully played by the Cannon's infield, especially Mike Steller at shortstop and Mike Ginsberg at second base. Several double plays kept the Cannons in the game all the way. A pitching change in the sixth inning did not work out, unfortunately, as two innings of warming up did not aid Tom Paulshock's ability to throw strikes, and this seemed all the more glaring of an offense, as starting pitcher Mark Yokel walked no one and pitched very well. Jeff Kurland, Neal Charkatz, Mike Dubansky, Evan Kreitzer, Chuck Easter, and Mike Steller all had a multi-hit final game, yet somehow in 2003 the Cannons finished as first runner-up.

They did serve notice to the rest of the that in 2004 they will be one of the teams that are eager to play. Neal Charkatz will replace Gerry Edelman as the Havana Club's manager next season. In Gerry's last four season's as manager the Cannons made it to the finals three times, with one tournament championship. In 2001 the Cannons finished with the best regular season record but missed the playoff finals. Gerry will continue to work as a liaison, and general manager for the Cannons ball club and their sponsor Ruth's Chris.
