Kings vs NEK Entertainment
Game 1
Havana Club Cannons 14 NEK
Entertainment 6
The Havana Club Cannons enjoyed the beautiful Sunday weather by sweeping
an enthusiastic NEK. team, 14-6 and 15-2. Mark Yokel and Tom Paulshock earned
the wins for Havana Club. Chuck Easter, Michael Dubansky and Michael Ginsberg
paced the offense in game one.
NEK came out looking to gain a gap in the standings between themselves and the Cougars. NEK's defense played tough in the top of the 1st allowing only 1 run. In the bottom of the first NEK came out running using their speed to their advantage scoring 3 runs to take a 3-1 lead. Both teams played tough until the 5th inning when the flood gates opened up on NEK's D. Havana Club put 8 runs on the board to take a 13-3 lead. NEK's bats were quiet when they had some opportunities and it hurt them. Final score Havana Club 14-NEK 6.
Game 2
Havana Club Cannons 15 NEK
Entertainment 2 (5 Innings)
NEK wanted to get in this game quick and jump out with some runs. They
did with 2 in the top of the first. That is all they would be able to plate for
this game as Havana had timely and well placed hits all day today and took the
second game 15-2 in 5 innings.
Game two featured impressive hitting
statistics from the entire Havana Club lineup. Meanwhile, the Havana Club
defense continues to play excellent softball anchored by a silky smooth infield.

Cougars vs Quizno's
Game 1
Quizno's 29 Cougars 5 (4 Innings)
Quiznos extended their win streak to four games, and maintained a one-game lead
with a sweep of the expansion Cougars 29-5 and 25-9. DH Russ Seemster hit a
monster 3-run homer over the right-center field fence in the first inning of
game one as Quiznos scored 14 runs and never looked back. 3B Joel Koman and RF
Bobby added solo shots over the left field wall in a 10-run 3rd inning. LCF
Craig Dlin got on base a combined five times in only five innings to set the
table for the "Meat". A surprisingly patient Andrew Rosenstein walked three
times in game one (that ties his single season mark for all of last year) P Jeff
Harris got the win.
Game 2
Quizno's 25 Cougars 9 (5 Innings)
The second game was more of the same. Quiznos got off to a slow start and led
12-6 after two innings. Quiznos' Blue Wave, however, erupted for 10 runs again
in the 4th inning to put the game out of reach. The big blow in the inning was a
3-run homer over the right fielder's head by Henderson who, because of his love
of music, apparently ran with a Wurlitzer Piano on his back. Harris won game two
also.

City Crab Turtles vs Sky & Sky Inc
Game 1
Sky 6 Turtles 3
City Crab Seafood started the day one game in front of Sky & Sky with the
hopes of at least keeping Sky & Sky looking up in the standings when the day was
done. Sky & Sky had other ideas though, jumping out to the early 2-0 lead as
Andy Bloom tripled home 1 and eventually scored. City Crab Seafood cut the lead
in half as Donny Weinapple ripped a bullet down to third base which eluded the
third baseman (but not the third baseman's shoulder) and set the table for the
run to score. Three more came across in Sky & Sky's third inning, as leadoff
hitter Steve Truitt's line drive was fielded at the base of the OF fence for a
two run shot. Scott Felton added a 2-out solo shot. Larry Newman lost control of
the strike zone during the 5th inning giving up 4 walks, but City Crab Seafood
only managed to push 2 across including an error to extend their inning. Sky &
Sky added an insurance run to cap the scoring at 6-3 with Newman getting the win
and Bruce Eisenberg absorbing the loss. Steve Truitt led the attack with 2 hits,
2rbi, and 2 runs as Scott Felton chipped in with 2 hits and 2 runs.
Any legitamate hopes for City Crab Seafood
Company to finish 1st in the regular season this year were dashed as Sky and Sky
swept a doubleheader from the happless Crabs, at the new Northwest Regional
Park, on Sunday.
There were no bats to be found on a sun drenched Randallstown field for City
Crab today, as Pitcher Larry Newman, only gave up 5 total runs enroute to the
sweep, 6-3 and 6-2. This tennis-like score started in game one with Sky jumping
on loser Eisenberg for two in the top of the 1st. A double over the third-base
bag by leadoff hitter Robby Ressin (3-3, run scored and 1 rbi) and a run scoring
single by Donnie Weinapple, made the score 2-1 after one. Sky got three in the
top of the third to take a commanding 5-1 lead going into the 5th. The Crabs
loaded the bases in the bottom of the 5th, but could only push across two runs.
One in the top of the sixth was more than enough to even these two teams at 9-4
for the season.
Game 2
Sky 6 Turtles 2
With City Crab Seafood looking for some redemption in the second game,
Sky & Sky decided to draw first in the b-1st pushing 4 across in the frame. Two
singles to lead off the inning were silenced by the standard 6-4-3 DP. But Sky &
Sky did not fold in the in the inning as the next three batters all managed to
hit safely. With runners at 2nd & 3rd Chris North delivered the clutch 2-out
single scoring one easily. However, Brian Kowitz was thrown out by half a step
at home plate which should have ended the inning. Unfortunately, his "lack of
speed" was attributed to interference from the City Crab Seafood 3B, and he was
awarded home plate. In the b-2nd, Sky & Sky's Aric Spitulnik lined a shot that
was misjudged by the City Crab Seafood LCF for a quick run, adding one to their
lead. In the b-3rd Scott Felton led off with a double, but Eisey worked some
magic inducing the next two batters into IF outs. Again Chris North answered the
call singling home the slow-footed Felton. Newman seemed to regain his control
in game 2 holding down the City Crab Batters until Detour Dave strode to the
plate in the t-5th with two on. He proceeded to hit a long fly over the head of
catcher Alan Friedman, who was impersonating a right fielder for the day,
scoring both of City Crab Seafood's runs. Both pitchers shut down opposition
bats the rest of the way, as Newman gained his second victory on the day and
Eisey again took the loss. Defense was on display in game two as numerous line
drives and difficult-to-handle ground balls found their way into fielders'
gloves. Aric Spitulnik led the attack for Sky & Sky adding 2 singles to his HR
plus 2 runs scored. Scott Felton went 2-3(HR, 2B, 2 runs), Chris North was 2-3
with 3rbi, and Brian Sky and Steve Truitt each added 2 hits.
In game two, it was more of the same...Newman
sawing-off the bats of the Crabs with a mixture of curve-balls and srewgys to
induce weak grounders and soft pop-ups for easy outs. Sky got four in the
1st...one in the 2nd and third innings and cruised to an easy 6-2 victory. The
only blow for the Crabs came in the top of the 6th. With two-on and one-out,
Detour Dave Sandler finally connected...a long fly-ball over Alan Friedman's
head in right for a stand-up triple to knock in two. Sandler, however, was
stranded as Weinapple lined to short and Summerfield flew to left to prevent any
more scoring. Newman went one...two...three in the 7th for another victory.
Eisey pitched well in both games, but was the hard luck loser as his record
falls to 9-4. Next week, it's the Crabs against the suprise team of the league
(Eastern Savings Bank), who took two this week against Palmgard and remain just
one game out of 1st place with only two weeks left in the regular season.

Kings vs Northwest Corridor
Game 1
Kings 26 NWC 4 (4 Innings)
The Kings put 9 runs on the scoreboard prior to their first out in the
t-1st, scoring a total of 10 runs in the inning, en route to a 26-4, 4 inning
victory in game 1 over the winless Northwest Corridor. The Kings were led
offensively by Jeff Slutzker, making his 2003 season debut. Slutzker fell just a
single away from hitting for the cycle, recording a double, triple, and homerun
in his first 3 at-bats before grounding out in the 4th inning. Unfortunately for
Slutzker, the game ended after 4 innings and he never got another opportunity
for the single. The highlight of the Kings 10 run 1st inning was Chuck Grant's
2-RBI SINGLE off the top of the fence in LCF.
Kings game notes: With a triple in inning 2,
Alan Varhaftik tied Joel Gordon for first place with 22 career Kings triples.
Slutzker's game 1 triple was #21 in his Kings career. Slutzker with his double
ranks #1 with 77 in his Kings career, 3 ahead of Barry Foland, and 9 ahead of
Chuck Grant. Mike Herr was 3-3,1 R,2 RBI,SF (to pitcher--a real rarity).
Chuck Grant, Alan Varhaftik, and Todd Katz knocked in 3 runs apiece.
NWC game notes: Joey Liner and Dave Stein were each 2-2 with 1 run scored.
Game 2
Kings 18 NWC 3 (5 Innings)
This game was actually quite close for the first 3 1/2 innings. In fact,
NWC led 3-2 after 3 1/2 innings, but the Kings exploded for 16 runs in the b-4th
and this game ended early with the Kings on top 18-3. Joey Liner remained hot
for NWC, leading off the game with a single and later scoring on a groundout to
put NWC on the board in t-1st. In b-1st, Marc Goldstein and Mike Herr singled,
followed by a Shilo Merwitz SF to tie score 1-1. Dave Mize hit a double plating
Merwitz for a 2-1 Kings lead. In t-4th, RBI hits by Howard Goldberg and Goldman
gave NWC temporary 3-2 lead. In b-4th, Alan Varhaftik's single scored Chuck
Grant with the tie run and Jan Katzen's single scored Varhaftik and Jeff
Slutzker with the go-ahead runs, and the Kings never looked back.
Kings game notes: For the doubleheader, Kings offensive stats were: Marc Goldstein (4-8,5 R,3 RBI), Mike Herr (6-7,3 R,4 RBI,2B), Shilo Merwitz (4-7,3 R,3 RBI), Dan Frignito (2-6,4 R,2 RBI,2B,3B,2 W), Dave Mize (3-6,4 R,3 RBI,2 2B,W), Chuck Grant (3-5,4 R,3 RBI,2B,2 W), Alan Varhaftik (2-5,5 R,4 RBI,3B,2 W), Jeff Slutzker (4-6,5 R,8 RBI,2 2B,3B,HR,W), Todd Katz (3-7,3 R,4 RBI), Jan Katzen (4-6,5 R,3 RBI,2 2B,3B), and Richard Wong (4-5,3 R,3 RBI,3B,W). Kings Mike Herr had 2 hits in the t-1st of game 1 and again in b-4th of game 2. Herr also picked up his 250th Kings regular season managerial win in game 2.
