PMS Week 16 / July 27, 2003 Highlights

Pikesville Middle School Field #1
Sky & Sky Inc. vs Northwest Corridor
Game 1
Sky & Sky 8  NWC 3
Northwest Corridor jumped right out of the box as Howard Goldberg blasted a three-run shot into the trees in LCF in the t-1st. Sky & Sky answered with two of their own on two SF. The game remained 3-2 until Sky & Sky pulled ahead with an RBI double by Brian Kowitz and another SF. Sky & Sky added four insurance runs in the b-6th, to finish out scoring 8-3. Newman got his 5th W in a row. Hitting stars were Brian Kowitz (2-3, 2 2B, 2RBI, 2 run), while battery mates Mike Rottenberg and Larry Newman each chipped in with two hits.

Game 1 was much more exciting than Sky & Sky had expected. NWC came out fired up and pushed 3 quick runs across the the board in the top of the 1st. A Joey Liner single and David Stein double set the stage for a towering 3run homer from Howard Goldberg. Sky&Sky pushed 2 across in the bottom of the 1st making the score 3-2. That's the way it would stay untill the top of the 4th as Sky and Kowitz both scored runs to give thier team a 1 run lead 4-3. It would remain a pitchers duel until the bottom of the 6th when Sky&Sky scored 4 more times to take an 8-3 lead. That's how the game would end as the NWC could not get their bats working for a 7th inning comeback. The NWC were lead by solid pitching from Howard Goldberg and outstanding defense from Jon Lamb, Gabe Unterman and Joey Liner in the outfield. Eric Wingrat did a great job fighting the green monster in left. Gabe Unterman made an outstanding diving catch in rightcenter but was outdone by Alan Friedman who's outstretched diving grab closed the game out for Sky&Sky.

Hitting Stars for NWC
Howard Goldberg 1-2 3run hr
Joey Liner 2-3 1r

Game 2
Sky & Sky 18  NWC 2  (5 Innings)
Game two saw a much different outcome. Brian Kowitz got things rolling with a double, as two runs crossed in the b-2nd. Three more crossed off the bat of Scott Felton which preceded a Brian Sky triple. Seven more for the Sky & Sky offense in the t-4th...the table-setter was a triple off the bat of Doug Coggins. The t-5th saw Sky & Sky finish up the scoring with five more for a final of 18-2.

Game 2 started out tight like the first one with Sky&Sky taking a 2-1 lead into the 3rd inning. A big Scott Felton blast helped Sky increase the lead to 6-2. 3innings and 11 runs later Sky&Sky sent the NWC home wondering if they can get their first wins against the Cougars next week.

Pikesville Middle School Field #2
Kings vs Palmgard
Game 1
Palmgard 9  Kings 6
Palmgard moved into a temporary tie in the standings with the Kings after a game 1 victory 9-6 over the Kings. The teams exchanged single runs in the 1st inning. For Palmgard in 5t-1st, consecutive 1 out singles by Glen Ackman (3-4,2 R,2 RBI), Jim Davis (1-3,1 R,2 RBI,W), and Gabe Silber (RBI) brought in the run. For the Kings, Marc Goldstein tripled and Ken Zalis (1-3,1 R,1 RBI,2B) hit a SF to even score. In Kings b-2nd, Chuck Grant hit a 1 out triple and Jan Katzen followed with an RBI single putting Kings ahead 2-1. In t-3rd, leadoff singles by Marty Ellis (1-2,2 R,W), Grailen Archie (2-4,1 R), and Glen Ackman loaded the bases. Dan Frignito relieved Kings starter Chuck Grant, but the Palmgard rally continued with 2-RBI single by Jim Davis, walk to Gabe Silber (1-3,1 R,1 RBI,W), Jeff Sacks (1-3,1 R,2 RBI,2B) 2-RBI 2B, Bob Hansen (2-3,1 RBI) RBI single, and Marc Benjamin (1-3,1 RBI) RBI single. When they were all done, Palmgard had built a 7-2 lead. Palmgard pulled a similar trick in t-4th, with their first 4 batters reaching base safely, culminating in a Glen Ackman 2-RBI single, putting Palmgard up 9-2. Kings did rally in b-5th. Leadoff singles by Jan Katzen (2-3,1 R,1 RBI), Mike Herr (1-3,1 R), and Josh Frederick  (2-3, 1 RBI) were followed 2 outs later by RBI hits from Marc Goldstein (2-4,2 R,1 RBI,3B), Shilo Merwitz (1-3,1 RBI), and Dan Frignito (2-3,1 RBI,2B). The rally made the score 9-6 and neither team generated much offense after that. Palmgard 3B Mickey Golden made several key defensive plays and started a doubleplay in b-7th.

Game 2
Kings 10  Palmgard 8
Game 2 had important seeding implications with Palmgard hoping to move up to the 6th seed, while the Kings with some help from Quizno's stood the possibility of moving up to the 5th spot. The first 4 Kings batters reached with an RBI single by Shilo Merwitz (1-3,1 R,1 RBI) and 2 RBI double by Dan Frignito (2-3,1 R,2 RBI,2B) resulting in a 3-0 Kings lead. Palmgard evened things in their half of the 1st. Glen Ackman (2-4,1 R,1 RBI,2B) doubled with 1 out and scored on Jim Davis' RBI single. Gabe Silber (3-4,2 R) also singled and with 2 out, Bob Hansen hit a 2 RBI triple. Kings went out to another 3 run lead in t-2nd. Jan Katzen (2-3,1 R,1 RBI), Mike Herr (1-3,1 R), and Josh Frederick (RBI) (2-3,2 R,1 RBI,2B) singled to start the rally. Chuck Grant was credited with an RBI and also reached on an infield error. With runners on the corner and 2 outs, Marc Goldstein's hit a sharp grounder to Palmgard SS Dave Kopel. Kopel flipped to Gabe Silber for the force-out of Grant and Silber fired over to 1B Bob Hansen for the doubleplay attempt. Goldstein was ruled safe at first base, while Josh Frederick scored the Kings 3rd run of the inning. Kings extended their lead to 8-3 in t-3rd, with the key hit a Jan Katzen 2 out RBI single. Chuck Grant (2-3,1 R,3 RBI,HR) hit a 2-RBI HR in t-4th giving Kings 10-3 lead, but Palmgard fought back hard. 2 out RBI singles by Grailen Archie and Glen Ackman brought the score to 10-5 after 4 innings. Marc Benjamin (2-4,2 R,3 RBI,HR) hit a 3-RBI HR in b-5th as Palmgard edged back to 10-8. Kings game 2 starter Dan Frignito retired the Palmgard side in order in b-6th, but the 7th inning was not without some sweating for the Kings. In Palmgard's b-7th, Gabe Silber reached on a 1 out infield error and 1 out later Bob Hansen walked. That brought slugger Mark Benjamin back to the plate, but Frignito was able to retire Benjamin on an infield bloop pop out to end the game.

Palmgard notes: Palmgard defense was solid turning 3 ground out doubleplays. Kevin Oliner made his second start of the season battling back from an injury. Ron Bondroff made a guest appearance as a catcher/pinch-hitter.

Kings notes: Shilo Merwitz and his wife Christy added Maxwell Marcus Merwitz to their family on Thursday. Despite limited sleep the past few nights, Shilo played the doubleheader. The Merwitz' 2 year old son is named Mason Maximus Merwitz. Mike Herr collected 2 more hits moving him to 499 lifetime with the Kings (games 433, at bats 1101, hits 499, avr .453), but was unable to collect the milestone in his final 2 at-bats of the regular season. He will aim to take home the #500 souvenir ball next week in playoff round 1 against Eastern Savings Bank.

Quizno's vs City Crab Turtles
Game 1
Quizno's 13  Turtles 1
Quizno's Owings Mills won thier 1st Regular Season Title by smashing last year's Regular Season Champions by the score of 13-1. Quizno's Owings Mills needed to win just 1 of the 2 games played today to win the title outright- and left no doubt as to who the team to beat is when the Post Season Tournament starts next weekend.

Quizno's Owings Mills got off to a fast start in the top of the 1st innning by scoring 5 Runs thanks to RBI Singles by Russ Dlin (3-4 1B, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) and Bobby Morrow (4-4, 4 RBI) while Todd Pobletts (1-4, 3 RBI) added a 3 Run HR. The "Blue Wave" continued to stomp on the Turtles by adding 3 more runs in the top of the 3rd to take an 8-0 lead. Tony Luna (3-3, 3 Runs Scored) led off the inning with a 1B and was eventually drivin in by an Andrew Rosenstein (2-4 2 Runs) 1B. Bobby Morrow then singled to put runners on the corners and Jon Koman came thru with a clutch 2 out, 2 Run Double. With the score 10-1 going into the top of the 7th, Quizno's Owings Mills put the last nail in the coffin as Tony Luna Singled, Russ Dlin Tripled, Andrew Rosenstein Doubled, and Bobby Morrow Doubled all in consecutive at bats to make the score 13-1 and seal the victory for the Defending Champions.

Thirteen was an extremely unlucky number for City Crab in the regular season finale, as the "fried crustations"  got their claws handed to them on Sunday by the impressive "Subs" from Quizno's. In game one, The big blue hung-up a 5 spot, and it was plenty as Pitcher Jeff Harris scattered five hits over seven innings enroute to an easy 13-1 pasting.  Detour Dave was the only Crab with a multiple hit game (2-3, 1 rbi) as he plated Bruce Eisenberg, who lost his 5th in the last six games.

Notes in Game #1 for Quizno's Owings Mills:
* 3-6 Batters (Tony Luna, Russ Dlin, Andrew Rosenstein, Bobby Morrow) Combined- 12 for 16, 8 RBI, 7 Runs Scored)
* 8 of 11 Batters Scored at least 1 Run
* Toughness Award: Craig Dlin- left in the 5th inning to go intentionally throw up because of bad chicken and steak fajitas at Don Pablo's the night before and returned to play game 2 ( went 2-3 with 3 Runs Scored in Game 2).

Game 2
Quizno's 13  Turtles 0  (5 Innings)
Jeff Harris continued to confuse the City Crab Turtles with his change of speeds as he threw his 1st shut out of the season and did not allow a runner past 2nd base to lead Quizno's Owings Mills to the sweep of the City Crab Turtles by the score of 13-0. Quizno's Owings Mills wasted no time again as they quickly scored 5 Runs in the top of the 1st inning thanks to an RBI Single by Russ Seamster (suffering from bronchitis), a 3 Run HR by Russ Dlin (3-3, 3 Runs Scored, 4 RBI) followed by a Solo Shot by Andrew Rosenstein (1-3, 2 Runs). The "Blue Wave" continued to pound the ball as they scored 4 runs on 4 hits in the 3rd inning as Bobby Morrow came thru with a cluch 2 out, 2 RBI single. With the game in hand and Jeff Harris in cruise control ( 3 K's on the day Pitching) on the mound, the Defending Champions added 4 more runs in the 4th inning to make the score 13-0. Ricky Schrieber (1-2, 1 Run Scored) lead off the inning with a 1B. After a Jeff Harris line out to 3rd, Craig Dlin (2-3, 2 Runs) Singled to move Schrieber to third. After a Tony Luna Sac Fly, Russ Seamster delivered with an RBI Single to score C.Dlin. Russ Dlin then followed with a 2 Run HR- his 2nd of the game to put the game out of reach. Quizno's Owings Mills- the 2003 Pikesville Softball Regular Season Champions.

In game two...it was almost a carbon coby of the opening game...a series of misplays and no hitting as Jeff Harris again allowed no runner past 2nd base.  In a laugher, the Crabs shriveled up and dryed-out, 13-0, in a 5 inning affair. The two victories enabled Quizno's to win the regular season championship with a nifty 16-2 record.  They are the number one seed in next week's opening round against improved NEK.  On the other hand, the Crabs have dropped five of their last six and come into the playoffs with the lowest seed in recent memory.  The #6 Crabs will visit the #3 Cannons at the new Northwest Regional Park.  If the Crabs play like they have been lately,  August 3rd will be their final week of softball for the 2003 campaign.

Notes for Quizno's Owings Mills Game #2:
* Jeff Harris- 1st Career Shutout (54 career games pitched). Improves career record to 7-1 vs Turtles including 7 straight victories.
* Quizno's Owings Mills scored 10 of their 23 Total Runs with 2 Outs.
* Andrew Rosenstein- has Homered in 4 straight weeks.

Pikesville Middle School Field #4
Havana Club Cannons vs Eastern Savings Bank
Game 1
Cannons 8  ESB 7
The Havana Club Cannons rebounded well from their previous weeks doubleheader loss to the Kings, by sweeping a pair from Eastern Savings. In the last regular season games for this years rain abbreviated schedule, the Cannons were the visitors in game one. Evan Keitzer hit a three run homerun (#3) in the top of the first, but the Eastern Savings club responded by scoring five in their initial at bat. The Cannons took back the lead in the top of the second as Chuck Easter doubled, and after a walk to Johnny Edelman, Brian Forthofer hit one out of the park (#9). Then hits by Mike Steller, Jeff Kurland and Dan Kassel got the lead up to 7-5. Eastern Savings added a run to make it 7-6, before the bottom of the sixth, when Eastern had runners on first and third and one out. A fly to center plated the tie run but the runner on first was called out for leaving early. In the top of the seventh Johnny Edelman walked leading off, and he scored on a two out single to left by Neal Charkatz, again giving the Cannons a lead, now 8-7. That was the final score as Mark Yokel was the winning pitcher. Ted Winner pitched well in defeat. There was a definite playoff feel to this game and a heightened level of desire.

Game 2
Cannons 15  ESB 4
Game two saw the Cannons score five times in the bottom of the first with a pattern similar to game one. Chuck Easter doubled, Johnny Edelman singled and Brian Forthofer hit one out of the park (#10). Charkatz, Steller, Kurland and Kassel all followed with hits. Eastern Savings however, trailed only 5-4 after three. Here the Havana Club stepped up their offensive production, putting up six in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Joe Mondel highlighted these two innings with hits as did Mike Steller, Brian Forthofer, Neal Charkatz, Jeff Kurland and Dan Kassel. Tom Paulshock was the winning pitcher in game two, 15-4.

Pikesville Senior High Field #5
NEK Entertainment vs Cougars
Game 1
Cougars 9  NEK 8  (9 Innings)
NEK vs. Cougars. This was a battle to see who would get to face Quiznos in the opening game of the playoffs. NEK was looking forward to a chance at getting some retribution after a week 1 loss to Quiznos.

NEK Came out firing on all cylinders putting up for 4 runs in the top of the 1st. Cougars came back in the bottom of the 1st with 3 runs. NEK kept putting up runs inning after inning until the 5th. They were leading 8-3 going into the bottom of the 1st when the Cougars put up 6 to take a 9-8 lead. NEK tied it back up and sent the game into extra innings. NEK loaded the bases in the top of the 8th and the Cougars brought in a relief pitcher to shut NEK down and he did. The Cougars got a leadoff triple in the bottom of the 8th and knocked him home on a hard groundball in the hole between short and 3rd. They took the game 10-9 in 8 innings. David Pridgen took the tough loss for NEK.

Key Hitters for NEK in game 1 were:
David Pridgen 3-4 1HR 2RBI 2 runs
Kevin Purnell 2-5 2 runs
Jason Gardner 2-3 2 runs

Game 2
NEK 12  Cougars 8
NEK knew they needed to take this game to get the spot in the playoffs they really wanted. They didn't look like it for the first 2 innings as they came out flat falling in the hole 4-0. Then they turned it on. They scored runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, topped off by a 5 spot in the bottom of the 5th to take a 12-5 lead. There were some great defensive plays for NEK as the were diving catches in the OF by Frederick Neal and over the shoulder catches by Rashaad Johnson. The infield was locked in also as Steve Hanson made some backhanded plays in the hole throwing out 2 batters in a row. There were also some plays at the hot corner. Brian Lipiro had 3 line drives smoked right at him that he fielded like a pro. The game ended on a ground ball to Brian Lipiro as there were runners on 1st and 2nd and he stepped on 3rd and threw the batter out at first for the double play.

Key hitters in this game were:
Jason Gardner 2-3 2 rbi 2 runs
Mike Georgie 2-3 1HR 2 rbi 2 runs
Frederick Neal 3-3 3 runs
Brian Lipiro 2-3 1 rbi
Pete Griffin 2-3 1 rbi 1run
Eugene Mattison 1-3 1 HR 2 rbi
David Pridgen got the much deserved win.

After the game it was announced that Brian Lipiro was given the game ball. He declined and said that since the team played so well together that this was a team game ball. NEK should be proud of themselves. They played hard and looked like a team finally. Quiznos look out for this team is firing on all cylinders and could be a team to watch out for in the playoffs.
