PMS Week 5 / May 11, 2003 Highlights

Pikesville Middle School Field #1
Cougars vs Eastern Savings Bank
Game 1
ESB 18  Cougars 6
ESB was the home team this week vs. the Cougars but decided to hit first with the hope of jumping out to a quick lead. The strategy worked with ESB pushing across 9 first inning runs. ESB scored 6 more runs in the second to take a 15-0 lead.  Winner was cruising along when ESB put in Russ Zappocosta to pitch an inning. The Cougars scored 4 quick runs so Winner quickly reentered. ESB closed the game out early with 6 more runs in the fifth for a final score of 23-7. Winner evened his record at 2-2. Hitting stars for ESB were Chris Zoeller with a home run and a single, Jonny Feldman with 2 hits, a walk, and 3 runs scored, Ben Guttman with 3 hits, Ted Winner with a home run and a triple, Russ Zappocosta with 3 hits and 3 runs scored, and Mark Loeb with a home run and 3 RBI’S.

Game 2
ESB 15  Cougars 8
In the nightcap David Finkelstein took the mound for ESB. The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. ESB tied it in the second on an rbi by Tzvi Friedman. In the bottom of the third ESB SCORED 4 runs with the big blow coming from Zoeller, a monster 2 run homer. The Cougars showed a lot of heart by reclaiming the lead in the top of the fourth scoring 5 runs all with 2 out for a 6-5 lead. However ESB would not be denied and came back to score 4 runs and reclaim the lead for good. The big blow of the inning was a 2 run single by Mark Loeb. ESB would close out their scoring with 2 in the fifth, one of the runs coming on a Zoeller home run and 4 more in the sixth with all 4 runs coming on a grand slam over the hill at fenway by (you guessed it) Chris Zoeller.  Finkelstein improved to 2-0 while ESB moved into a tie for second place. ESB dedicated their sweep to their wonderful mothers.

Pikesville Middle School Field #2
NEK Entertainment vs  Northwest Corridor
Game 1
NEK 10  NWC 3
NEK used timely hitting and capitalized on NWC mistakes to jump out to a 1st inning 5 run lead. NWC could not pull it together to rally a comeback. Pridgen(bern) pitched a great game constantly jamming the NWC right handed batters. Rashaad led the way for NEK with 2 runs scored and Marquis lofted a couple long line drives. Eric Wingrat was the only NWC bat to show up for the game blasting 2run triple. Both teams shared in the raking of the mud and raking of the mouths.

This week was a week that both teams seemed anxious for. NEK squeaked past North West Corridor ( than known as Mount Washington Tavern) to get in the playoffs last season. NWC was looking for retribution. NWC chose to hit to start game 1 and NEK looked to avoid the first inning jitters they always seem to fight through every game. NEK won that battle putting NWC down 1-2-3. NEK's bats came out thundering getting to NWC for 5 runs. The key hit in the game was when Marqui Garrett came up with 2 outs and two on. Already up 3-0 a base hit here would give NEK a much needed early cushion. Marqui drilled a shot into the centerfield gap for a triple and 2 RBI. NEK seemed to go into cruise control for the rest of the game because the 5 was all they needed. They added 3 more runs in the 4th, 1 in each of the 5th and 6th to coast to a hard earned 10-3 victory. Winning pitcher was David Pridgen. Big hitters of the game were:
Pete Griffin 2-3, 1 RBI, 2 runs
Marquis Garrett 3-3, 2 RBI, 1 run
David Pridgen 1-3, 3 RBI, 1 run
Mikey Georgie 3-4, 1 run

Game 2
NEK 11  NWC 7
Both teams overcame the wrath of Clyde's weekly all star umping to play a tight game that came down to the wire. Once again NEK jumped out to an early lead. They had a 6 run spot until the 6th inning when NWC's bats woke up for the first time in 3 weeks. With a 1 run lead going into the 7th NEK tagged on 3 insurance runs led by singles from Bern and Rashaad. That was too much for NWC unable to rally for anything in the bottom of the 7th. Eric Wingrat had 2 doubles for NWC, Howard Goldberg had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs, 2 of them on a missle of a homerun to left. Jon Lamb and Dave Stein also drove in runs for the NWC.

After celebrating shortly their first win of the season NEK took to the bats again trying to secure the sweep of the double header. After 2 hits scored no runs the NEK defense was sent out to step up. It did just that for the first 3 innings holding NWC scoreless. NWC tried everyhting including an attempted steal of third after a double when the umpire already called time and the ball was back on the mound. NEK came out in the 3rd inning and put a 2 spot on the board. In the fifth inning NEK jumped out to a 8-2 lead and NWC fought back scoring 5 in the sixth to get with in one. NEK came out in the top of the seventh and decided they were not going to make it any easier for NWC they put a three spot up to take an 11-7 lead into the bottom of the seventh. After 2 quick outs NEK appeared to have the game locked down when third baseman Brian Lipiro had a Bill Buckner moment. A simple ground ball stayed down on him and got through his legs. That runner didn't matter as the next batter flew out to end the game and seal the sweep. This game had a bit of controversy as the umpire blew a beautiful play by Rashaad Johnson in left center. It was a low line drive that Rashaad made a sprawling catch on and the umpire said he trapped it. He had a bad view as he never left his position behind the plate. The other bit of controversy was the banning of a bent bat that was used by NWC. Key hitters in this game for NEK were:
Rashaad Johnson 4-5, 2 runs
Marquis Garrett 3-4, 2 RBI
Pete Griffin 3-4, 1 RBI, 1run
Steve Hanson 3-3, 1 RBI, 3 runs
Jason Gardner 4-5, 2 runs

Pikesville Middle School Field #3
Kings vs City Crab Turtles
Game 1
Kings 7  Turtles 6
The Kings and the Turtles battled to a split in a pair of 1 run games. Despite a very sloppy batter's box, the teams played rather well defense throughout the doubleheader. The Kings held on to win the opener 7-6. Kings scored 4 runs in t-1st. RBI's in the inning came from Dan Frignito (2 RBI 3B), Shilo Merwitz (SF), and Jan Katzen (single). Turtles tied the score with a 4 run b-2nd. Lee Eidelberg led off the inning with a HR over the right field fence. Paul Bell singled home the 2nd run, while John Frederick had a 2 out 2 RBI single that knotted game 4-4. Kings went ahead in t-3rd. Frignito singled and Chuck Grant hit a 2-run HR onto field 2. The Turtles again tied score in b-3rd. Dave Sandler and Rickey Farley led off the inning with singles, followed by a Lee Eidelberg SF and Marc Summerfield RBI single. Kings regained the lead in t-5th thanks to the baserunning of Frignito. Frignito led off the inning with a single, moved up to 2B on a flyout to LF, and tagged 2 bases to score on an Alan Varhaftik SF to LCF. The Turtles would not give up and managed to get runners on 1st and 3rd base with 2 outs in b-7th before Chuck Grant was able to get Turtles #3 hitter Rickey Farley to flyout to end the ballgame.

Multi-hit batters for the Kings were Mike Herr (3-4,1 R), Ken Zalis (2-4,1 R), Dan Frignito (3-4,2 R,2 RBI,3B), and Jan Katzen (2-3,1 RBI). For the Turtles Dave Sandler (2-4,1 R), Warren Scudder (2-3,1 R), and Reggie Ellis (2-2,1 R).

Game 2
Turtles 12  Kings 11
Game 2 was another classic match-up between the longstanding rivals with the Turtles coming out with the 12-11 victory. Turtles went out to 4-0 lead in t-1st with key hits coming from Rickey Farley (3-run HR) and Warren Scudder (RBI single). Kings picked up 3 runs in b-1st on SF from Dan Frignito and RBI single by Alan Varhaftik. Kings tied score 4-4 in b-2nd. Kenny Salzman doubled to start inning and later scored on Justin Ott's SF to RCF. Attman's came thru with 3 runs in t-3rd with RBI singles from Scudder and Paul Bell (2 RBI with 2 outs). Kings took over the lead with 4 runs in b-3rd. Ken Zalis singled and Frignito homered for 2 runs. Grant doubled, Shilo Merwitz doubled (RBI), and Salzman singled (RBI) for the 8-7 Kings lead. Again Turtles resumed lead in t-5th. With 1 out, Scudder singled, Reggie Ellis hit an RBI double, and Rob Gould hit an RBI single giving Turtles 9-8 lead. Kings tied it in b-5th when Frignito doubled to start inning and 1 out later Varhaftik singled him home. Turtles took 12-9 lead with 3 runs in t-6th, all coming with 2 outs. Key RBI singles in the inning were hit by Farley and Marc Summerfield. The Kings came back with 2 runs in b-6th via RBI singles by Ott and Zalis, but that left the Kings behind 12-11 and that's the way the game ended.

Hitting stars in game 2 for the Kings were Ken Zalis (3-4,2 R,1 RBI, 2B), Dan Frignito (2-3,2 R,3 RBI,2B,HR,SF), and Alan Varhaftik (2-4,2 RBI). For the Turtles, the offensive stars were Bruce Eisenberg (3-3,2 R,1 W), Rickey Farley (2-4,2 R,4 RBI, HR), Lee Eidelberg (3-4,3 R,3B), Warren Scudder (3-4,2 R,2 RBI), and Reggie Ellis (2-3,2 R,1 RBI,2B,1 W).

Pikesville Senior High Field #5
Palmgard vs Havana Club Cannons
Game 1
Palmgard 13  Cannons 12 (9 Innings)
The Havana Club Cannons met up with their old nemesis Palmgard on this Mother's Day, and while it was not like the playoff finals of the year 2000, the winner was still the team with the most hits. (GAME PROTESTED) Game one saw the Cannons score in each of the first six innings, and as the visitor, they led 12-6 into the bottom of the sixth. That was all the scoring the Cannons could muster in this game, as Mike Johnson came in to snuff out the Cannons offense right there. A multi hit game was had by Brian Forthofer, Mike Dubansky, Chuck Easter, Mike Stellar, Evan Kreitzer, and Jeff Kurland. The Game was unofficially decided in the home eighth. Manager Gerry Edelman lodged a protest in the top of the seventh inning, when umpire Durwood ruled that a Cannons runner was out at second base when the Palmgard shortstop failed to catch a hump back liner hit directly at him. The umpire said that "by rule when a defensive player intentionally does not catch a batted ball, the on base runner is automatically out at his next base". GAME PROTESTED in top of the seventh with no outs, two on and score tied.

Palmgard bounced back from last weeks loss to the Quizno team. The week was a little easier, since it was an open field and the only thing in the way of any softball bombs was a house in right field, a boulder in deep left center field and the out fielders from the other team playing on Field #5 Quizno's and Sky & Sky).

This game was a hitting clinic for both teams as the Cannons scored in the first 6 innings, but laid down 2 goose eggs in the 6th and 7th innings. Palmgard started off with a MONSTER homerun by Glen Ackman which was hit like a "cannon" into right field the hit the lawn of the white house in right field. It clearly was the longest ball hit in the history of Pikesville Softball. Gotta love Miken !!! The Cannons seemed to be in control when they scored 6 runs in the 3rd inning brings the score to 8-2. Palmgard was missing 3 key starters, Eric Ruby, who was working on his farm, Scott Bloom was absent and Mark Benjamin was at the NASCAR races waiting for the rain delay! Additionally, Gabe Silber was playing with a sprained toe, Jim Silvestri with a sprained right foot and Mike Johnson came in later to pitch with a broken toe. With all this foot action, it was time for Palmgard to wake up. As always, Palmgard began its hitting barrage in the 4th inning, with Dave Kopel and Jim Silvestri each poking back to back doubles with 2 more back to back singles from Jeff Sacks and Gabe Silber ending the score 9-5. Palmgard them added another run in the 5th inning with Glen Ackman and Jim Davis connected for 2 doubles each. The Cannons, never gave up scoring in the first 6 innings, but laying up 2 goose eggs in the 7th and 8th innings. Palmgard waited until the 6th inning to score 6 runs with 6 consecutive hits starting with a single from Jeff Sacks, a triple from Gabe Silber (second of the day), single by Mickey Golden, then back to back HOMERUNS from Archie Grailen and Glen Ackman with a triple by Bobby Hansen ---- Gotta love Miken ! -- With the score 12 to 12 going into the 7th inning, the Cannons hitter, lined a serious shot into Marty's leg which may have put him out for the season. By the time the ambulance came to the field, his knee was so swollen that it was the size of TWO GRAPEFRUITs! So when are we going to SINGLE WALL BATS as no one could have dodged that hit even at 60 feet! Archie started off the 8th inning with a crucial single and the player of the day, Glen Ackman, smashed a double into deep right center to score Archie from first base and win the game ending 13-12.

Game 2
Palmgard 11  Cannons 5
Game two was tied at five each after four innings but the Cannons stopped scoring and Palmgard went opn to win 11-5. Neal Charkatz went three for three in this game and Mike Ginsberg had a pair of doubles. Chuck Easter added a triple, giving him three triples on the day. Tom Paulshock took the loss.

This was a pitchers dual for the first 3 innings (score 3-2 cannons) with Mark Yokel (Cannons) doing a superb job as an UMPIRE for game#2. In honor of Marty being taken to the hospital, Palmgard started its hitting clinic by scoring 3 runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings with key doubles by Jim Davis, key timing of singles from Dave Kopel and a monster game for Gabe Silber hitting a towering triple into the boulder in left center field -- Gotta Love Miken --- The game ended 11-5 with Palmgard clearly hitting together as a team.

Pikesville Senior High Field #6
Quizno's Owings Mills vs Sky & Sky Inc.
Game 1
Quizno's 10  Sky 7
Game one saw meager offense from both sides in the first few innings, but in the b-3rd Quizno's took advantage of a potential double-play ball turned ugly, to score 6 unearned runs. Russ Dlin delivered a 2-rbi SF for the big blow of the inning. Sky & Sky returned the favor taking advantage of a Quizno's error on their way to pulling within one(8-7) after 4 and 1/2 innings. Russ Dlin delivered again, tripling home one of two runs in Quizno's half of the 5th to cap the scoring at a final of 10-7. Jeff Harris earned the win while Lane Gordon took the loss.

Game 2
Quizno's 21  Sky 9
Game two saw much more offense as Quizno's again took advantage of poor defense. With two quick outs in the first, Quizno's pushed 4 across on four RBI producing shots in a row. Two errors in the t-2nd allowed three more to score, again after two quick outs. Quizno's singled their way to three runs in the t-3rd... executed by the bottom half of the line-up. Still playing an uncharacteristic "small ball" game plated three more in the t-4th.(aided by another infield error) Sky & Sky followed Quizno's lead getting four runs back with singles and doubles in the b-4th. Scott Felton homered for 2 after a Quizno's error, but that was as close as Sky & Sky would get. They added 8 unanswered runs seemingly taking batting practice in the last two innings to close out the game 21-9. Again Harris gained the victory and Gordon took the loss.
