2004 PMS at Northwest Regional Park

Week 11:  June 13, 2004

Field 1:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 8 (WP-Larry Newman 7-6) Hops Hounds 6 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-4)

The Hounds played their best game all year sticking with Sky until the bitter end. They were up by one run in the last inning, but lost the lead with clutch hitting by Sky. Kory Rosenberg pitched very well keeping Sky's runs to a minimum despite walks, but the team worked hard to get Kory out of tough jams. The errorless outfielders proved crucial to the Hounds fighting until the end of the game. Offensively: Lee Braverman, Scott, Anthony Russel,  Matt Friedman, and Kory Rosenberg went 1 for 3. Brad Rosenberg and Allen Messenger went 2 for 3, and Alex Newman went 1 for 1 with 2 walks. RBI's were hit in by Kory Rosenberg, Scott, Matt Friedman, and TJ Bednash.

Game 2:  Sky & Sky Inc. 15 (WP-Larry Newman 8-6) Hops Hounds 3 (LP-T.J. Bednash 0-1) 5 INNINGS

Offensive slugging for the Hounds: Tim Palo went 3 for 3 with a double and Scott also went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles. Brad Rosenberg went 2 for 3 and Alex Newman went 1 for 2.

Field 2:
Game 1:
Eastern Savings Bank 24 (WP-Russ Zappocosta 2-0) 23  Northwest Corridor 11 (LP-Dave Stein 2-5)    5 INNINGS

ESB jumped to an early 7-1 lead after 2innings. It looked like a long afternoon ahead until NWC tied it up at 7-7 following a bases loaded 2b by Howard Goldberg and rbi singles from Jason Ott, John Hummel and Jon Goldman. It would stay a competitive tight ballgame until the 5th inning when ESB broke open a 12-10 lead and stretched it to 24-10. NWC couldn't stretch the game out any further managing just 1 run in the bottom of the 5th.

Game 2: Eastern Savings Bank 16 (WP-Ted Winner 7-2) 16  Northwest Corridor 1 (LP-Howard Goldberg 1-6)    5 INNINGS

Highlights pending.

Field 3:
Game 1: NEK Entertainment 28 (WP-David Pridgen 2-5)  Jilly's Under Armour 13 (LP-Rich Schneider 1-4)  5 INNINGS

NEK jumped out on Jilly's early. NEK batted around in the first and second inning in a game that was never close. Even with an extra inning due confusion about the 4 inning blowout rule. Jilly's was never close. NEK was ready to play after losing Andre "motor mouth" Vaughn for the rest of the season (torn Achilles). Welcome back to Marqui Garrett who crushed a three run homerun in his first at bat in a month. Congratulations to Steve Hanson for becoming the first player on NEK to fly out twice in one inning. The majority of the players on NEK had at least two hits.

Game 2: Jilly's Under Armour 11 (WP-Kevin Oliner 2-4)  NEK Entertainment 10 (LP- Jason Gardner 0-1)   Game Under Protest

NEK was robbed again due to questionable umpiring. Down 11-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning, NEK pieced together would should have gone down as a great come back. Here's what occurred: NEK scored three runs to pull within two runs, 11-9 with 2 outs in the bottom of inning 7. With a runner on first base, Jason Gardner belted a two run homerun over the outfield fence. The NEK bench was extremely excited and joined Gardner in a celebration around home plate. With the score now apparently tied 11-11 and Rashaad Johnson stepping into the batter's box, umpire Mark Schlenoff called GARDNER OUT and the GAME OVER, leaving the field prior to providing a good explanation to the NEK team. Who misses home plate on a homerun?

NEK has filed an official protest about the final call. A decision will be made once the rules committee has had an opportunity to discuss the play with the team managers, along with umpire supervisor Mark Schlenoff.

Field 4:
Game 1:
Kings 14 (WP-Chuck Grant 7-2)  Quizno's Owings Mills 6 (LP-Jeff Harris 5-2)

A well rested Kings squad returned refreshed from their mid-season break, scoring 8 runs in t-1st en route to a 14-6 victory over the defending league champs Quizno's in the opener. Eight runs is often not enough against the offensively potent Quizno's contingent, so the Kings stayed focused and played solid ball over the full 7 innings.

The Kings played just like their team name and blew away a decimated Quizno's Owings Mills team by the score of 14-6. Despite missing 3 starters and having 3 starters playing with injuries, Quizno's Owings Mills could not match the intensity of the Kings as they scored 8 Runs off of pitcher Jeff Harris before Quizno's Owings Mills picked up a bat in the First Inning. Down 8-1 after the 1st Inning- Quizno's closed the lead to 8-5 by scoring 4 runs in the second inning thanks to key hits from Jon Koman and Todd Pobletts. The only other run that Quizno's Owings Mills was able to conjure up in the final 5 innings came in the 5th inning when Russ Dlin tripled with one out and was knocked in by a Russ Seamster Sac Fly.

Four straight singles by Kenny Salzman (3-3,2 R,2 RBI), Shilo Merwitz (2-4,1 R), Dan Frignito, and Dave Mize (2 RBI) started the big 1st inning, with subsequent RBI hits by Josh Frederick (RBI 1B), Keegan Rettaliata (RBI 2B), Chuck Grant (2 RBI 2B), and Kenny Salzman (RBI 1B). Quizno's came back with 1 run in b-1st on RBI single by Russ Seamster. Quizno's scored 4 more runs in b-2nd on 2 RBI double by Jay and 2 RBI single by Craig Dlin. Leading 8-5 after 3 innings, Kings took advantage of sloppy Quizno's defense in t-4th, scoring 4 unearned runs against Quizno's starter Jeff Harris. Quizno's tried to mount a rally in b-4th, loading bases with 1 out, but Kings starter Chuck Grant was able to coax Craig Dlin into an inning ending 5-5-2 doubleplay, started by Kings 3B Shilo Merwitz.

Kings game 1 notes:
►Kings RF Troy Hendricks (day 4-6,2 R,1 RBI) played in his 1st game and singled to CF in his 3rd at-bat. He also made several fine plays in the outfield.
►Kings turned 2 ground-ball doubleplays, both started by 3B Shilo Merwitz.
►Kenny Salzman and Shilo Merwitz had 2 singles each in Kings t-1st.
►Kings C Mike Herr had 4 putouts- 2 strikeouts including a foul-tip 3rd strike, and 2 tag-out plays at the plate.
►Kings LF Alan Varhaftik celebrated his 35th birthday yesterday.
►Kenny Salzman played in his 200th Kings game, and is just 5 hits shy of Kings hit #200.

Game 2:
Kings 6 (WP-Dan Frignito 2-2)  Quizno's Owings Mills 3 (LP-Lane Gordon 5-1)

Game 2 turned out to be a pitcher's duel with the Kings coming out on top 6-3. Quizno's starter Lane Gordon matched up against Kings starter Dan Frignito. Gordon scattered 10 hits, while Frignito allowed just 5. Kings grabbed 2-0 lead in b-2nd on a Keegan Rettaliata (2-3,2 R,2 RBI, HR) 2-run HR over the fence in LCF. Quizno's loaded the bases with 1 out in t-3rd on walks to Jon Koman and Lane Gordon, and a single by Todd Pobletts. With the top of the order up for Quizno's, 3 straight groundballs turned into 3 runs as the Kings committed 2 errors. The Kings escaped the mistake-filled t-3rd, trailing 3-2. Kings EH Mike Herr started b-3rd with a single and scored the tying run on Dan Frignito's 2B down the LF line. Still deadlocked 3-3 entering b-4th, Josh Frederick (2-2-,2 R,W) and Rettaliata led off the inning with singles. Following a flyout, RBI singles by Troy Hendricks (3-3,1 R,1 RBI) and Marc Goldstein, along with pinch-hit RBI SF by Ken Zalis put the Kings ahead 6-3. The momentum was obviously with the Kings when in the t-5th, Quizno's Jay led off with a triple down the line in LF, but he was unable to score when Frignito was able to retire the next 3 hitters on a grounder to 3B Merwitz, and 2 comebackers to the mound, the final one a nice stabbing grab. Masterful pitching by Frignito the rest of the way shut down the usually potent Quizno's bats.

The Kings completed the sweep of Quizno's Owings Mills by the score of 6-3. Once again, Quizno's Owings Mills could not get the bats rolling in Game #2 as they were held to only 5 hits the entire game. No player on Quizno's Owings Mills had more than one hit. All of the runs were scored in the 3rd inning as Jon Koman, Todd Pobletts, and Lane Gordon each touched the plate in the inning.

Kings game 2 notes:
►Kings RF Marc Goldstein returned to the lineup after missing 3 weeks with a back injury.
►Dan Frignito made his first pitching start since May 2 against the Cannons.
►Quizno's was limited to just 1 extra basehit in game 2, a 3B by Jay.
►Kings make-up their BYE next week, thus off from play for 3 out of 4 Sundays.
►2B Richard Wong remains out with a high ankle sprain.

Quizno's game notes:
►Quizno's Owings Mills was swept for the first time since the now defunct Palmgard team defeated them twice in Week 11 of the 2002 season (9-1 and 8-7 at Randallstown High School).
►Quizno's Owings Mills scored only 9 runs in 14 innings played- a season low.
►Total Runs scored by innings (both games)- Innings 1 thru 3: 8 Innings 4 thru 7: 1
