2004 PMS at Northwest Regional Park

Week 12:  June 20, 2004

Field 1:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 18 (WP-Mark Yokel 9-0) Quizno's Owings Mills 6 (LP-Jeff Harris 5-3)
5 INNINGS

The Cannons bats today were on a rampage. Mark Yokel gave up 1 run in the top of the 1st, but by the next time Quizno's scored in the top of the 3rd, the Cannons had plated 7 runs. The offensive barrage was highlighted by a 10 run 4th inning where the Cannons had 14 batters come up. Chuck Easter was 3-3 (BB, 4 runs scored 1 rbi). Mike Steller reached base 3 times with a Homerun (#4), a double and 4 rbi's. Every Cannons batter scored a run. Mike Ginsberg was 3-4 with 2 Rbi's as well. An outstanding 2 out diving catch in left field by Dan Kassel saved 2 runs and sparked the Cannons!

The Cannons put together a 10-run 4th inning to break open a close game and send Quizno's to their 3rd straight loss by the score of 18-6. Quizno's Owings Mills continued to get hit by the "injury bug" this week as their team looks more like a M.A.S.H unit than a softball team. Quizno's Owings Mills will be scrambling to find doctor appointments this week with orthopedic specialist Jon Koman (3rd Baseman) as Craig Dlin (hairline fracture- kneecap), Tony Luna (back), Lane Gordon (broken finger) and Joel Koman (everything) were all out due to injury. Russ Seamster continued to play despite a sprained ankle. Either way, the defending champions continued to struggle with the bats as they scored only 6 Runs in their worst defeat in 3 years.

Game 2:  Havana Club Cannons 18 (WP-Tom Paulshock 5-2) Quizno's Owings Mills 7 (LP-Jeff Harris 5-4)

Quizno's Owings Mills continued their downward slide in the standings by losing their 4th straight game by the score of 18-7. With Quizno's Owings Mills down 7-4 in the 4th- the Cannons put together another 10-run inning to break the game open. Quizno's Owings Mills bats were again silent as the 6-10 batters went 4/17 (.235) collectively with 1 Run scored against Tommy Paulshock. Russ Seamster and Bobby Morrow added HR's in the loss. Jeff Harris took the loss in both games and has lost his last 3 decisions.

The Cannons bats stayed hot, going for 6 runs in the top of the 1st. The 1st 6 batters all scored as the Cannons batted around. In the top of the 3rd the Cannons struck again for another 10 run inning. Lou Falcon, Johnny Edelman and Danny Kassel all had 2 hits a piece in the 3rd, producing 4 rbis between them. Mike Steller hit another homerun (#5), and Lou Falcon hit his 1st homerun of the season. Mike Ginsberg had 3 rbis, as did Mike Steller, and Evan Krietzer. Lou Falcon though paced the way with 4 rbis in game 2. Tommy mowed Quizno's down, settling in nicely and adding a single to help his own cause.

Field 2:
Game 1:
Jilly's Under Armour 17 (WP-Kevin Oliner 3-4) Hops Hounds 9 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-5)

With the possibility of Jilly's/Under Armour sinking into the depths of the Pikesville nine, the tied for 8th place team found a way to take two from the much improved Hops Hounds and leap into sole possession of 6th place on a glorious Father's Day Sunday.

Kory Rosenberg pitched very well for two innings against the Turtles. But after they scored two in the 3rd inning, the flood gates were opened. The Hounds were slaughtered in five innings, but the offensive force is growing stronger with each passing week. Lee Braverman, Matt Friedman, Alex Newman, and Brad Rosenberg each hit a single. Kory Rosenberg hit 2 for 3 with a double. Going 3 for 3 was Anthony Mangine, Allen Messenger, Steve Hoffman, and Mike Beverly. Hoffman scored every time he got on base.

In game one, it didn't look promising for the home team...After a scoreless 1st, the Hounds went almost exclusively down the 3rd base line and it proved effective, scoring five runs to take a 5-0 lead after two. Harry Schevker (2-4, 2 3B's, 3rbi's) helped begin the comeback with a triple to knock in two in the third. The 4th inning would prove to be the Hounds undoing, as Jilly's sent 12 to the plate, scoring eight times on seven hits with Mark Summerfield providing the big blow with a triple of his own. After four, it was 10-6. Seven more crossed the plate for starting pitcher Kevin Oliner, as Summerfield this time touched them all, with a three run blast to left. Final score 17-9, as Under Armour notched its 4th win.

Game 2: Jilly's Under Armour 14 (WP-Kevin Oliner 4-4) Hops Hounds 9 (LP-Steve Hoffman 0-3)

The Hounds started the 2nd inning with a 7 to 0 deficit and battled all the way back throughout the game. Kory Rosenberg relieved Steve Hoffman only allowing 7 runs in six innings. Tim Palo, Steve Hoffman, Brad Rosenberg, and Matt Friedman each hit a single. Anthony Mangine and Allen Messenger went 3 for 4 in the game (Messenger went 6 for 7 on the day). Alex Newman and Kory Rosenberg each hit triples going 3 for 4. Mike Beverly hit an in-the-park homerun, and Scott Snyder clocked a two run homer over the fence.

In game two, it was the Hounds who would start way behind. Jilly's threw up another seven spot, with Summerfield again (2-3, HR, 2B, 2 runs) going high and long over the left-field fence. 7-0, after one. Jilly's scored two more in the 2nd, as Reggie Ellis (1-2, 2B, 3 BB, 3 runs) and Chris Knorr (3-4, 3B, 2 rbi, 2 runs) knocked in one a-piece. Five for the Hounds again made it a game after two , it was 9-5. Two more for Hops in the fourth made it 9-7...after a single run for Jilly's in the fifth and two by the Hounds in the bottom, it was 10-9 going into the last two innings. Jilly's, however kept the offense going, getting three big runs in the top of the 6th and held on for dear life as the Hops Hounds scratched out two in their half....final score 14-11. Kevin Oliner went all the way to notch his second victory of the day and Jilly's recorded its first doubleheader sweep of the season.

Jilly's/Under Armour Notes and stuff:
Jilly's/Under Armour inked a new outfielder to a rest of the year contract in 6' 1" Andre Burris (OF, Long Island University).

An update from last weeks controversial Jilly's victory over NEK in game two, when the umpire (Mark Schlenoff) ruled that after a game tying, over the wall homer by NEK in the bottom of the seventh, that the batter failed to touch home in a wild celebration at home plate....Jilly's will grant NEK a continuation of that game, with two out and the score tied, only if the outcome will affect the seedings if both teams make the playoffs, at a date and time to be determined later this season.

Field 3:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 15 (WP-Larry Newman 9-6)  Northwest Corridor 6 (LP-Dave Stein 2-6)

The two teams played a pretty tight game with Sky & Sky taking the victory 13-6. After a 1-1 1st inning Sky capitalized on few walks and took an early 4-1 lead in the 2nd. Sky put 3 more to their lead after the 4th on timely Alan Friedman and Larry Newman singles. NWC tries to stage a comeback scoring 1 from an Aaron Birenbaum sac fly and 3 more in the 6th. Lee Pollak doubled in a run and Howard Goldberg singled 2 more in bringing the NWC total to 6 after 6inn. Sky & Sky however scored 4 more in the 6th and 1 in the 7th to close out the game. David Stein pitched a great game for the NWC and he received great defense from Howard Goldberg at 3rd and his outfielders behind him. The NWC would like to thank Paul Bell for putting the cleats back on for father's day. The league had missed you.

The first game featured both teams trading runs for the first few innings. Sky and Sky seemed to luck into a lot of seeing-eye singles and methodically took advantage of those opportunities. The final wound up 15-6 with Newman getting the win and Stein taking the loss.

Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc. 15 (WP-Larry Newman 10-6)  Northwest Corridor 14 (LP-Howard Goldberg 1-7)

Game 2 was an exciting see saw battle with Sky & Sky coming up victorious in the bottom of the 7th. Sky had 5 consecutive base hits in the 1st inning to take an early 4-1 lead. NWC answered with 5 of their own in the 2nd inning. Paul Bell started things off with a double. 3 more doubles were hit in the inning by Howard Goldberg, Joey Liner and Lee Pollak. SKY answered right back in the bottom of the 2nd scoring 4 more helped by back to back Bloom and Sky triples. Leading 8-6 going into the bottom of the 4th Sky& Sky broke the game open with 4 more runs off another triple and a couple timely bloop singles. With the game almost over NWC staged a great comeback in the 6th scoring 4 runs. Singles by Aaron Birenabum, David Stein and Lee Pollak and Triples from Howard Goldberg and Joey liner got the NWC right back into the game. Trying to put the game away in the bottom of the 6th Sky & Sky went down 1-2-3. Howard Goldberg threw an assortment of knuckleballs to Sky's 3-4-5 hitters to shut them down and give his team a chance to win. Top of the 7th NWC Scored quickly from a Jason Ott triple. Lee Pollak drove him in and Matt Bell doubled to put the tying runs on 2nd and 3rd. David Stein tripled them both in to give NWC new hope a tie ballgame. Howard Goldberg delivered the insurance run and NWC went into the bottom of the 7th winning 14-13. Sky & Sky put men on 1st and 2nd with 1 out and Mike Rottenberg stepping to the plate. Just like earlier in the year against Havana Club Rottenberg delivered with a double to even the game up again at 14-14. NWC gave Alan Friedman a free walk to 1st base to load the up for the force out. That brought up Larry Newman. Larry took the count to 3-1 and ending up walking on a borderline low ball/strike and the winning run crossed the plate. Sky & Sky 15 NWC 14

Game two featured a see-saw, offensive flurry for 7 innings. The teams traded leads several times right through the 7th inning. The unusual walk-off walk allowed Sky and Sky to eek out a 15-14, uglier than hell win. Again Newman got the win and Howard Goldberg absorbed the tough luck loss. This game featured only lowlights, no highlights.
