Week 13:  June 27, 2004

Field 1:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 12 (WP-Larry Newman 11-6) Kings 8 (LP-Dan Frignito 2-3)

Sky & Sky jumped out to an early five run lead in b-1st, but the Kings came roaring back with 4 runs in t-2nd and 2 runs in t-3rd to take a 6-5 lead. Key RBI hits for the Kings in those 2 innings were 2 RBI 3B by Mike Herr (2-3, 1 R,3 RBI), RBI single by Richard Wong (2-3,RBI), and RBI single by Troy Hendricks (3-3,1 R,2 RBI,2B). Sky & Sky used six hits in b-3rd to get a 3 run lead after 3 innings, score 9-5. RBI hits for Sky in the 3rd came from Andy Bloom, Brian Sky, Scott Felton, and an RBI walk by Alan Friedman. The Kings brought the game to within one run, 9-8, with single runs in 5th and 6th innings. Kings missed out on an opportunity to tie the score in t-6th with runners on the corner and 1 out, but Sky & Sky ended the threat with a 6-4-3 doubleplay. Three insurance runs in the sixth inning propelled Larry Newman to the win while Dan Frignito absorbed the loss. Final score, 12-8.

Game 2:  Sky & Sky Inc. 4 (WP-Larry Newman 12-6) Kings 3 (LP-Chuck Grant 7-3)

Game 2 saw a pitchers duel and great defense to finish in a one run thriller. In t-2nd, Sky's John Rivera doubled home one run, but the Kings escaped major damage with an inning ending 6-4-3 doubleplay. Sky & Sky 2, Kings 0. The Kings used 2 infield errors to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, but Sky & Sky answered back in the top of the third with two runs. Score 4-1, favor Sky & Sky. The Kings drove home 1 run in the bottom of the third inning on a 2B by Mike Herr and a SF by Kenny Salzman, making the score 4-2. In the bottom of the 5th inning, Chuck Grant's solo homerun to left field, his 3rd HR of the season, brought the King's within one run, 4-3. Both defenses clamped down for the rest of the game with Sky & Sky winning the thrilling nightcap. Again, Newman got the win with Grant getting the tough luck loss.

Game Notes:
►Larry Newman allowed just 5 hits in game #2 (15 hits in game #1) without allowing a walk. He held the Kings 1-7 hitters to an amazing 1-for-19 (.053) in game 2, while these identical Kings hitters were 11-22 in game #1.
►The Kings had no multi-hit players in game 2, while only Andy Bloom (2-2) and Jason T (3-3) had more than 1 hit for Sky.
►The teams combined in the doubleheader committed just 5 errors, while making several outstanding defensive plays. Especially noteworthy was Sky 2B Brian Sky who twice robbed Kings Ken Zalis.
►Kings Chuck Grant drove all night from Jacksonville, FL (with his understanding wife) to make it to the fields in inning #6 of game 1.

Field 2:
Game 1:
Eastern Savings Bank 18 (WP-Ted Winner 10-2) Northwest Corridor 11 (LP-Dave Stein 2-7)

ESB gave Northwest Corridor a huge beating 2 weeks ago. After the 1st inning it looked like it would be another long afternoon for the NWC. David Finkelstein retired NWC 1-2-3 in the top of the first and ESB piled on 5 runs thanks to 4 walks and a triple by Sam. NWC refused to go out without a fight. A Jason Ott triple and Aaron Birenbaum base hit put 2 runs across for NWC in the 2nd. 5 more runs were added in the 3rd inning and going into the 4th NWC had a1run lead 7-6. NWC pushed 2 more across in the 4th getting rbi from David Stein and Matt Bell. Eastern answered in their half of the inning plating 3 runners. Going forward to the bottom of the 6th NWC had a surprising 12-11 lead on ESB only 2 weeks after losing via slaughter rule. ESB scored 7 unanswered runs in the bottom of the 6th and NWC went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th. Eastern Savings Bank 18 NWC 12. NWC's defense broke down in the bottom of the 6th leading to the 7 runs and handing ESB the game.

ESB swept a double hitter from NWC to move into a first place tie.  This was the only good news on the day being that ESB’s highlights were late and we were fined an additional $5.  Jim Davis thought it was a good idea not to send highlights so that other teams couldn’t scout us ahead of time to see who was hot and who was playing well.  In game one David Finkelstein took the mound for the first time in four weeks.  NWC went down quietly in the first while ESB jumped on top in the bottom of the first with five runs.  The big hits of the inning were from Glenn Ackman – a two run single and Sam Luxenberg – a two run triple.  NWC kept chipping away at the lead with some shoddy fielding by their opponent and a plethora of dinky hits placed strategically right over the infielders.  Finally in the sixth Ted Winner came in and shut the door on NWC while ESB scored seven runs in the sixth to put away NWC.  The inning started off with a walk by Jonny Feldman followed by a single by Ben Gutman.  Jim Davis hit a RBI double for one run and Gabe Silber followed by a long sacrifice fly.  Glenn then doubled, Sam singled, Aaron Shifrin singled, Jason Schwartzman hit a sacrifice fly, Mark Loeb hit a single followed by a walk to Ted Winner and finally a single by Alan Lazerow.  Ted Winner got the win and Stein got the loss.

Hitting Stars for NWC:
Matt Bell 3-4 2r 2b rbi
Howard Goldberg 3-4 2r 2b rbi
Aaron Birenbaum 3-4 2r 3rbi
Lee Pollak 3-3 rbi

Hitting Stars for ESB:
J Feldman two hits two walks three runs scored
Ben Gutman three for four
Glen Ackman three for four with three RBI’s and three runs scored
Sam Luxenberg three hits and three run score and two RBI’s
Aaron Shifrin two hits and an RBI

Game 2: Eastern Savings Bank 18 (WP-Ted Winner 11-2) Northwest Corridor 11 (LP-Howard Goldberg 1-8)

NWC couldn't get their bats to show up in game2. For the second time this season Ted Winner got into the heads of the NWC hitters allowing only 6 hits. 3 of those hits were from leadoff hitter Joey Liner who scattered singles to all fields. The defense played well for most of the game and with the exception of the 4th inning Howard Goldberg had little problem getting the ESB hitters out. The bats were simply missing for NWC and 2 more losses are in the books. Joey Liner and Jason Ott played great ball in centerfield and Ross Gomer was a solid 3rd base all day long. The highly anticipated rematch with Sky & Sky next week should not disappoint.

The story of this game was dominant pitching by Ted Winner.  ESB put this game away easily 12-1.  ESB scored one in the first two in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete the scoring. Gabe Silber played shortstop for the first time this year and looked like Ozzie Smith out there making several terrific defensive plays.

Hitting Stars for ESB:
Ben Gutman three for four two runs scored
Gabe Silber three for four and three RBI’s
Aaron Shiffren two hits
Jason Schwartzman two runs scored

Field 3:
Game 1:
Jilly's Under Armour 12 (WP-Kevin Oliner 4-4) Hops Hounds 11 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-6)

The Hounds fought a close battle with the Turtles. Kory Rosenberg pitched well, but could not pull the win out in the end. Matt Friedman made several beautiful tags at the plate to get the out hurting his left shoulder in the collision. Anthony Mangine made a magnificent diving catch in the outfield, and the rest of the field played a solid game. Offensively, Tim Palo scored twice and went 2 for 4 with a triple. Anthony Mangine hit a single, and with good heads up stretched it into a triple. Allen Messenger went 2 for 3 with two singles and a walk. Scott Snyder hit a 2 run homerun, his second in two weeks. Brad Rosenberg went 2 for 3 with a triple scoring once, and Kory Rosenberg scored went 2 for 3 scoring twice.

Jilly's/Under Armour has put together a five game winning streak... and in doing that has secured a three game lead for sixth place
with five weeks left in the regular season. The schedule again favored Jilly's as they had their second consecutive double header against the winless Hops/Hounds.

In game one, the results were much the same, in a very hard fought opener...Kory Roseburg took the mound, still smarting from a line drive off the shin from last week... 13 walks accounted for six runs and really took its toll throughout the contest. Jilly's scored three in the second as newly acquired Craig Babst (Seattle) singled in his 1st at bat. After two, it was knotted at 3-3. In the 3rd, Jilly's added two more with Detour Dave (1-1, 3 BB, 2B, 2RBI) and Jim Silvestri scoring on a Chris Knorr (1-2, 2BB, 2RBI) single. Three more in the 4th were tacked on for Under Armour, but the Hounds came roaring back with 5 of their own to tie it at 8-8 after four complete. The Hounds did take the lead in the bottom of the 5th...but a double play from Knorr to Ressin to Eidelberg minimized the damage and may have proved to be the spark that Jilly's needed going in to the last two innings. With three in the top of the sixth, Jilly's took the lead 11-9. Hops got one back in the sixth itself...going into the 7th, it was anybody's game, at 11-10. In the top of the 7th, Lee Eidelberg blooped a double to leadoff. Jim Silvestri moved him to third on a groundout to 2nd. Reggie Ellis had, what proved to be the game winning RBI, with a Sac Fly to Center. Although the Hounds had two runners on and one already in with two out...their fifth place hitter lined weakly to Ressin at second to keep them out of the win column...final: 12-11 Jilly's/Under Armour.

Game 2:
Jilly's Under Armour 13 (WP-Dave Sandler 1-3) Hops Hounds 1 (LP-Lee Baverman 0-2)  5 Innings

In game two...Rosenberg had departed! The Hops/Hounds were desperately looking for pitching, but no one could come to the rescue. The combination of Lee Baverman and Scott Snyder could not find the plate. Fourteen more walks (nine which scored) was too much to overcome, in a five inning affair...final score Jilly's 13, Hounds 1.

Hitting stars for Under Armour included Craig Babst (Seattle) 2-3, with a double and 2 rbi's..."Nik" who has worked diligently with hitting coach Reggie Ellis finally got the bat going...He went 4-5 in the twin bill with two rbi's, hitting line drive after line drive. Rich Schneider continued his unselfish play, catching game one and showing a keen eye at the plate with two walks and a single.

Jilly's Gems:
►The squad has acquired the services of OF Craig Babst. Jilly's purchased his contract from Seattle (Pacific Coast League). He now resides in Glen Burnie, MD. Look for more acquisitions to come next week, as Commissioner Mike Herr has set the regular season games played total at (nine) to qualify for post season play.
►Chris Knorr (Eldersburg) made his pitching debut...coming in in the 4th inning to relieve winner (Sandler)...allowing just one run...scattering 4 hits for the hold.

Field 4:
Game 1: Quizno's Owings Mills 7 (WP- Jeff Harris 6-4) NEK Entertainment 6 (LP-David Pridgen 2-7) 10 Innings

Craig Dlin hit a frozen rope down the left field line in the bottom of the 10th inning to boost the defending champions to victory- ending their longest losing streak in 3 years (4 Games). NEK- playing with only 9 players- scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Quizno's Owings Mills had a chacne to end it in both the 8th and 9th inning- but Russ Dlin (8th Inning) and Todd Pobletts (9th Inning) both lined out with runners at 3rd with 2 outs. Finally in the 10th Inning after back-to-back singles C. Dlin ended it with a shot down the left field line. Larry Henderson led the way going 4/4 and scoring 2 runs. Quizno's Owings Mills went 13/40 (.325) in the game- but Henderson had 4 of the teams 7 hits in regulation. Congrats to Lane Gordon-coming back from a shattered finger-earned the victory. And how will Lane celebrate his victory after his comeback? By celebrating with Dr. Andrew Rosenstein for a colonoscopy in his office tomorrow at Noon. Congratulations Lane.......

David Pridgen pitched one of his best games ever. With only nine players NEK almost pulled off what would have been there biggest win ever. This 10 inning game was filled with excitement from beginning to end. Several of NEK's players came up with clutch hit's in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. However, the champs pulled it out in the tenth with some good hitting.

Game 2: Quizno's Owings Mills 17 (WP- Lane Gordon 6-1)  NEK Entertainment 2 (LP- David Pridgen 2-8) 6 Innings

Quizno's Owings Mills completed the sweep by scoring 6 Runs in the 3rd inning to break open a close 3-1 game. Quizno's Owings Mills set a franchise record by walking 12 times as 7 different players reached base via a free pass. Joel Koman led the "walkathon" by walking 3 times in game #2. After going 13/40 in the first game- the bats got red hot as the "Blue Wave" went 18/34 (.529) in game #2. Once again, Larry Henderson led the way by going 3/3 with 2 runs scored. Jeff Harris helped himself out by not only getting the victory- but he also went 3/4 and scored a pair of runs. Quizno's Owings Mills will get a much needed "bye" next week as the "walking wounded" try to recover from their team injuries.

After the first inning NEK showed no signs of life. KUDOS to David who threw to great games.
