2004 PMS at Northwest Regional Park

Week 14:  July 4, 2004

Field 1:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 20 (WP-Mark Yokel 10-0)
Jilly's Under Armour 3 (LP-Dave Sandler 1-4)

Game 1 between the Cannons and Jilly's started out as a close game with the Cannons leading by 1 after 4 innings. However, the Cannon bats woke up in the final 3 innings for a 20-3 victory. Four runs in the fifth followed by 3 more in the sixth and nine in the seventh did in the Jilly's squad.

Hitting stars for the Cannons were:
Lou Falcon - cycle, five RBI's, 2 runs
Kurland - 4-5 3 runs
Kassel - 2-4 , 2 runs
Yokel 2- 4 , 3 runs
Ginsberg - 2-4 , 2 runs, 4 RBI's

Yokel improves to 10 - 0 on the season with another solid effort-- 7 innings , 1 earned run and no walks.

The July 4th Holiday provided many fireworks for the appropriately named Cannons, as they exploded for a clean sweep over Jilly's/Under Armour.

In game one...Jilly's called upon Detour Dave Sandler to take the hill vs. Mark Yokel...It was close early, but a combination of timely hitting and some poor fielding allowed the Cannons to score 16 of their 20 in the final three frames....Final score 20-3. The game featured The debut of PA native Scott Snyder for Jilly's/Under Armour. Snyder, formally of the Hops/Hounds, played out his option and has joined JIlly's for the stretch drive. Snyder went 2-3 (double off the wall) playing 3B.

Game 2:  Havana Club Cannons 14 (WP-Tom Paulshock 6-2) Jilly's Under Armour 7 (LP-Chris Knorr 0-1)

The Cannons picked right off in the second game where they finished the first. A 4 run first was followed by a 10 run 3rd which put the game away.

In the first Edelman lead off with a single. Kurland followed with a single of his own. This brought Mike Ginsberg to the plate who promptly hit a line drive that got between the outfielders for a 3 run HR. The 3rd inning saw the cannons send 14 me to the plate. Every Cannons player either scored a run or drove one in during the inning. Highlight of the inning was a towering HR by Frank Valois that has still not come down. Tommy Paulshock contributed to his good pitching with 2 hits of his own. Jilly's chipped away at the lead and fought till the end but finally ran out of chances. Tommy finishes with the complete game victory as the Cannons hold onto first place.

In game two, Jilly's had a first time starter in Chris Knorr, going against 59 year old Tommy Paulshock. Knorr mixed his fastballs with many offspeed pitches, but the results were much the same. A ten run bottom of the third did in Under Armour. Paulshock was in command virtually the whole game, tiring in the 7th, but held on to win easily 14-7. Lee Eidelberg got his slumping bat going in the nite-cap, going 3-3 with three line shot singles. Jilly's will need a major contribution from Lee and the rest of the newcomers to hang on to 6th place, as only a month is left in the regular season.

Field 2:
Game 1: Kings 30 (WP-Chuck Grant 8-3)  Hops Hounds 5 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-7)  5 Innings

The Kings acheived a 16 year franchise high for runs scored in a game by defeating the winless Hounds 30-5 in 5 innings in the opener. The Hounds, who had several late player scratches, hardly stood a chance with just 9 players and struggling Kory Rosenberg on the mound. Rosenberg for the 2nd straight week issued more than 10 walks and in the end gave up 25 hits (7 2B,1 3B, 5 HR) with 10 walks in just 41 official at-bats (.610 average, 1.195 slugging percentage, .686 on base percentage-- all Kings franchise records). The Hounds defense committed just 3 errors behind Rosenberg, but he totally lost his cool when an umpiring call went against his team on a play at 2nd base in the 5th inning. From that point on in t-5th, the frustrated veteran Rosenberg, with his defense tiring in the field, pathetically grooved all of his pitches, with the Kings getting 12 hits before Rosenberg could retire the final 2 batters (actually the final out was on the base paths).

The Hounds led 3-1 after the 1st inning, but the Kings scored 7 runs in t-2nd, 4 in 3rd, 5 in 4th, and 13 in 5th in also winning by their largest margin of victory, 25 runs (previous record 23 runs in 24-1 win over Orbin Publishing, April 15, 2001). There were many superb offensive numbers for the Kings, but the standout was RCF Dave Mize who hit an RBI 3B in the 1st, 3 run over-the-fence HR in 2nd, & 3 run over-the-fence HR in 5th.

Kings offensive stars:
Ken Zalis (2-4,3 R,2 RBI, W), Shilo Merwitz (3-5,3 R,1 RBI,2 2B), Dave Mize (3-5,3 R,7 RBI,3B, 2 HR), Chuck Grant (3-3,4 R,2 RBI,HR, 2 W), Mike Herr (4-4,4 R,2 RBI,2 2B, W), Marc Goldstein (3-3,4 R,5 RBI,2B,HR,W), Richard Wong (2-2,2 R,3 RBI,2B,W,SF).

Hounds offensive stars:
Mike Beverly (2-3,2 R,RBI,3B), Kory Rosenberg (1-3,1 R,2 RBI,3B), Alex Newman (1-1,RBI,2B,SF).

Game 2: Kings 21(WP-Mike Herr 4-0)  Hops Hounds 5 (LP-Brad Starobin 0-1)  4 Innings

The Kings continued to take advantage of the 3 man outfield, winning the nightcap behind the solid pitching effort of Chuck Grant in easily taking the nightcap 21-5 in 4 innings. Grant struck out 4 batters, allowing 6 hits and 3 walks. Meanwhile Hounds starter, newcomer Brad Starobin got his first experience with modified-style pitching. The Kings pounded out 18 more hits (7 2B,5 3B,2 HR) in 31 at bats in game 2. The Kings scored 7 runs in each of their 3 innings at bat, while several of the Hounds 'young guns', who continued to play hard despite the example of their game 1 starter, showed some pop of their own in their bats. Hounds SS Lee Baverman (2-2,2 R,2 RBI,HR)  seemed to own Grant, crushing an inside-the-park HR to RF and singling solidly to LCF. No other Hounds batter had more than 1 hit.

Highlights included Dave Mize (#3) and Chuck Grant (#5) both going yard, with Grant grabbing a bottle of Gatorade from the 3rd base coach on his trot to the plate. Shilo Merwitz tried to impress his wife Christi and young son by muscling up on his final at-bat, but Merwitz' attempt at his first over-the-fence HR landed short against the lower half of the fence, and Merwitz used all of his speed to get his 2nd triple of the season.

The game ended strangely in the t-4th with Hounds batting and the Kings ahead  21-5 with 1 out and the bases loaded. The Hounds needed to pull to within 14 runs to keep the game alive. Kory Rosenberg hit a flyball to medium RCF, caught by Dave Mize and Mize then throwing home to C Mike Herr, sweeping a tag on Jed Maslow, seemingly with the final out. However, during the play, C Mike Herr had tossed off his mask to make the play at the plate, but his mask struck umpire Clyde Richardson near the left eye and Richardson in pain,  then turned his back to the entire play and did not see either out. After a brief discussion, Rosenberg was ruled out on the flyout, with Maslow sent back to 3rd base. Fortunately umpire Richardson was fine and returned to make the final out call of the game.

Kings multi-hit players:
Marc Goldstein (2-3,2 R,2B,3B), Shilo Merwitz (3-3,2 R,3 RBI,2B,3B), Alan Varhaftik (2-2,2 R,3 RBI,2B,3B,SF), Troy Hendricks (2-3,3 R,3B), Chuck Grant (2-2,3 R,4 RBI,HR,W), Ken Zalis (2-3,2 R,RBI,2B), Keegan Rettaliata (2-3,3 RBI,2 2B).

Hounds After the Game:
Brothers Kory and Brad Rosenberg apparently have submitted their resignation to the Hounds. Although these 2 players can play for other teams for the remainder of the regular season, neither brother will be able to participate in playoff games for their new teams. A minimum of 9 games played are needed on a team to qualify for the playoffs, and thus with just 8 games left in the regular season, any player changing teams at this point will not get in the required number of games on their new team to qualify.

Field 3:
Game 1:
Northwest Corridor 8 (WP-Dave Stein 3-7)  Sky & Sky Inc. 4 (LP-Larry Newman 12-7)

Sky & Sky took an early 3-0 lead taking advantage of a dribbler down 3rd which wound up deep in LF foul territory. Unfortunately for them NWC played much tighter defense behind David Stein the rest of the way. Sky & Sky nursed a one run lead into the 5th, only to see their own mental lapses and errors evaporate their slim lead into a 4-run deficit. Final 8-4...Stein over Newman.

It was an eagerly awaited rematch as NWC looked to avenge their one-run loss to Sky & Sky in the bottom of the seventh inning two weeks ago. Things started out slowly with NWC going down 1-2-3 in the first, and managing only one base hit through the first three innings. Sky & Sky opened up a 3-0 lead in the second and added one more in the fourth. NWC finally started to get their bats going in their half of the fourth, scoring two runs off of RBI doubles from Matt Bell and Howard Goldberg. Excellent pitching from David Stein and solid defense behind him shut down Sky & Sky in the fifth and sixth innings. NWC came one run closer in the fifth after a Tony Esposito triple scored Jason Ott from first base. NWC broke it open in their half of the sixth inning, scoring four more runs. Matt Bell's RBI double drove in Joey Liner. Aaron Birenbaum and Scott Sweren both enjoyed RBI base hits as well. The 8th and final run came at the top of the seventh inning as Scott Landsman led off with a base hit, followed by a Tony Esposito double and a Lee Pollak SAC fly. Stopping any chances of a comeback, David Stein shut down Sky & Sky's 3, 4, and 5 hitters to end the ball game. NWC: 8, Sky& Sky: 4

Hitting Stars for NWC:
Matt Bell 2-4 22B 1R 1rbi
Aaron Birenbaum 2-3 1R 2rbi
Tony Esposito 3-3 2B 3B rbi

Game 2:
Northwest Corridor 9 (WP-Howard Goldberg 2-8)  Sky & Sky Inc. 6 (LP-Larry Newman 12-8)

Sky & Sky started game 2 off on a positive note, leading 1-0 after the first inning. That lead didn't last long as NWC was determined to pick up where they left off, plating four runs in the bottom of the second. Runs were scored off of rbi hits by Lee Pollak and Scott Landsman. Two of the runs were scored off of SAC flies by Scott Sweren and Tony Esposito. Sky & Sky made things interesting by narrowing the gap to 5-4 going into the bottom of the fifth. Smelling victory and the opportunity for a sweep, NWC pushed four more insurance runs across in the bottom of the fifth. Joey Liner and Matt Bell started the inning off with back-to-back singles, setting up back-to-back rbi doubles for both David Stein and Howard Goldberg. Sky & Sky, refusing to give up, pushed two more across in the top of the sixth. Howard Goldberg retired Sky & Sky's 2, 3 and 4 hitters in order to end the game and seal the victory for NWC. NWC: 9, Sky & Sky: 6. Both Howard Goldberg and David Stein pitched outstanding games called expertly by Lee Pollak behind the plate. NWC's defense was solid all afternoon, led by the aggressive play of Jon Goldman at Shortstop and the tenacity of Joey Liner and Jason Ott in centerfield. This was NWC's first sweep since Hop's Hounds in week six. NWC will look to take the momentum of the wins into next week's rematch with Jilly's.

Sky & Sky never seemed to regain their composure into the second game, as Howard Goldberg rode a wave of stellar defense to a 9-6 victory. A comedy of errors by the Swiss cheese defense for Sky & Sky, coupled with NWC's timely baserunning decisions never allowed Sky & Sky to mount a serious threat. Goldberg gained the victory, while Newman absorbed the loss. A note of thanks to the 6 newcomers who gave up their holiday morning to fill in for the vacationing players.

Hitting Stars for NWC:
Joey Liner: 2-3
Matt Bell: 2-3
Aaron Birenbaum: 2-3
Jason Ott: 2-2
