2004 PMS at Northwest Regional Park

Week 17:  July 25, 2004

Field 1:
Game 1: Quizno's Owings Mills 12 (WP-Lane Gordon 7-1 ) Jilly's Under Armour 8 (LP-Kevin Oliner 6-5)

The 2nd-to-last week of the season seemed a lot like the beginning of the 2004 campaign for the overmatched squad from Jilly's/Under Armour! Quizno's Owings Mills completely overmatched them in a doubleheader sweep that took 3 1/2 hours. Quizno's started warming up for this year’s tournament by finally unleashing the “BlueWave” against Jilly’s and sweeping them 12-8 and 20-6 (in six innings). Jilly’s had a tough day overall as Quizno's banged out 38 hits took advantage of several Jilly’s defensive miscues to take the fight out of Quizno's fairly early in both games.

In game one, Jilly's sent Kevin Oliner (5-5) to the mound...he was staked to a 2-0 lead as Scott Snyder (2-4, 1 run and 1 rbi) and Mark Summerfield got hits. Quizno's came right back in the bottom of the 1st, with four. Each team scored one in the third...but the game was decided in the 4th as Quizno's crossed the plate seven times enroute to a 12-8 win behind Lane Gordon.

Despite missing their 3-4-5 hitters, Quizno's took the early lead in game one when LCF Craig Dlin, C Larry Henderson, 3B Joel Koman and RCF Bobby Morrow hit consecutive singles to start the game. SS Todd Poplitz capped the 4-run 1st with a run scoring single. Quizno's added a run in the third when Poplitz hit a two-out RBI single to make it 5-3. Quizno's broke the game open and knocked out starter Kevin Oliner with seven runs in the 4th inning. P Land Gordon started the inning by “helping his own cause” with a single. One out later C. Dlin singled and Henderson walked to load the bases for Joel Koman. He delivered a single to right-center scoring Gordon and Dlin to make it 7-3. Morrow then tripled to left to make it 9-3. Quizno's then followed with a triple by A. Rosenstein, a triple my M. Rosenstein and a double by Poplitz to end the scoring at 12-3.

Game 2:  Quizno's Owings Mills 20 (WP-Jeff Harris 7-6 ) Jilly's Under Armour 8 (LP-Kevin Oliner 6-6) 6 Innings

In game two, with Oliner on the mound....Jilly's jumped on starter Jeff Harris with a big four runs. Scott Snyder, Mark Summerfield and Reggie Ellis provided the rbi's. An error plagued top of the 2nd with "The Big Blue" pounding the ball allowed Quizno's to regain their form. The lead was short-lived however, as Quizno's sent ten men to the plate in the top of the 2nd inning. They never looked back from that point, scoring two in the fourth, two in the fifth and completing the six inning shortened game with a crooked seven in the sixth, after exploding for nine in the 2nd frame. Game over...as some of the Jilly's/Under Armour personnel hung their heads in defeat, 20-6.

Morrow and A. Rosenstein started the inning with singles. M. Rosenstein doubled home Morrow. After Poplitz walked, Jon Koman cleared the bases with a double to the base of the wall. Gordon, playing right field because of Quizno's lack of players lashed a single to left to put runners at the corners. Pitcher Jeff Harris then doubled home Koman. And the rout was on. Quizno's added 11 more runs over the next five innings, with key hits coming from Morrow (sac fly), Henderson (three-run homer—you should have seen the ball fly majestically over the left field wall—yeah right) Jon Koman (two–run double) to make the final score 20-6 after six innings of play

Hitting stars Quiznos:
Craig Dlin 4-5 2 walks, 2 RBIs and 5 runs scored
Larry Henderson 5-8. 4 RBIs, 3B, HR, 4 runs scored
Bobby Morrow 6-7 5 RBIs 2B, 3B, 4 runs scored
Mark Rosenstein 4-8 4 RBIs 2B, 3B 3 run scored
Lane Gordon 4-7 2 RBIs 2B 3 runs scored

Next week, Jilly's will help determine the seedings for the playoffs with another match-up vs. Mike Herr's Kings on field #2.

Field 2:
Game 1: NEK Entertainment 9 (WP-David Pridgen 3-9)  Hops Hounds 6 (LP-Brad Starobin 0-3)

The Hops Hounds thank Dave Michaelson for coming to fill in as the 9th player on fifteen minute’s notice. It made a big difference on the day and allowed the games to be played out respectfully despite the outcome. Thanks, Dave!

Game 2: NEK Entertainment 16 (WP-Keith Mayle 2-2 )  Hops Hounds 1 (LP-Rich Schneider 1-6)

Nek won two big games to close out the regular season on a three game winning streak. David Pridgen and Keith Mayle both pitched great games. Jason Gardner and Marqui Garrett both hit homeruns to add to a great day at the plate for Nek. Kudos to the whole squad for playing some excellent defense.

Field 3:

Game 1:
Eastern Savings Bank 6 (WP-Ted Winner 13-2)  Kings 5 (LP-Chuck Grant 8-4)

The teams battled back-and-forth both on the field and verbally across the benches as this contest was essentially a battle for 2nd place in the regular season. Well for the Kings it was a battle for 2nd place, while for ESB they still held out for a chance for the regular season league title. The game was well played with each team committing just 1 error. Kings took an early 3-0, taking advantage of 2 Ted Winner walks in inning 1, with the first run scoring on a bases loaded walk to Chuck Grant and 2 more following on Josh Frederick's single to RF. In t-3rd, after Kings starter Chuck Grant retired the first 2 batters, consecutive hits by Marc Loeb, Ted Winner, Alan Lazerow (RBI bloop single), Ben Gutman (2 RBI 3B), and Glenn Ackman (RBI single) put ESB ahead 4-3. Kings knotted the score 4-4 in b-3rd on Grant's 2 out RBI double. In ESB's t-4th, 1 out singles by Jason Schwartzberg and Aaron Shifrin were followed by a Chris Zoeller walk and Dave Kopel SF, putting ESB ahead 5-4. Kings again tied score in b-5th as Dave Mize singled with 1 out and Mize came home to score 1 out later as a result of ESB's only error of the game. In t-6th, Glenn Ackman singled thru the box to start inning. 2 outs later, Ackman having moved over to second base on a groundout, scored as Jason Schwartzberg banged a hard single up-the-middle. Grant got a small piece of his glove on the hit, but the ball easily went into CF with Ackman scoring the go-ahead run, 6-5 ESB. ESB starter Ted Winner kept the Kings off the board in the 6th and the 7th to preserve the 1 run victory.

The pitching lines for both starting pitchers were remarkably similar:
Chuck Grant 7 IP, 30 AB,10 H,6 R,6 ER,2 W,0 K,0 2B,1 3B,0 HR
Ted Winner  7 IP, 31 AB,10 H,5 R,5 ER,4 W,1 K,1 2B,0 3B,0 HR

Multi-hit players for ESB were Alan Lazerow (2-3,1 R,1 RBI), Glenn Ackman (2-3,1 R,1 RBI), Jason Schwartzberg (2-3,1 R,1 RBI). For the Kings Alan Varhaftik (2-3,1 R) and Ken Zalis (2-3).

Game 2:
Kings 14 (WP-Dan Frignito 3-3)  Eastern Savings Bank 1 (LP-Russ Zappocosta 5-1)  5 Innings

The Kings treated Russ Zappocosta to his 1st loss of the season. Kings starter Dan Frignito was quite effective, limiting the potent ESB attack to just 4 hits, all singles, in the 5 inning, 14-1 Kings win. In Kings t-1st, Mike Herr singled with 1 out and scored on a Dave Mize fielder's choice. In their half of the inning, Alan Lazerow drew a leadoff walk, and 1 out later scored on consecutive singles by Glenn Ackman and Gabe Silber. The teams entered the t-3rd at 1-1, but the Kings bats came alive and put a 6 spot on the board. Key RBI hits came from Shilo Merwitz (2 RBI 2B), Alan Varhaftik (2 RBI HR), and Troy Hendricks (RBI 2B). Kings pushed across 7 more runs, all with 2 outs in t-4th. RBI hits in t-4th came from Dave Mize (2 RBI 1B), Alan Varhaftik (RBI 1B), Chuck Grant (2 RBI 2B), and Troy Hendricks (RBI 2B).

Gabe Silber (2-2,1 RBI) was the lone ESB player with 2 or more hits. The Kings multi-hit players were Dan Frignito (2-4,2 R,1 RBI), Mike Herr (3-3,3 R), Alan Varhaftik (2-3,2 R,3 RBI, HR #4), Chuck Grant (2-3,2 R,2 RBI,2B,3B), Troy Hendricks (2-3,2 RBI,2 2B), and Keegan Rettaliata (2-3,1 R,2B).

Field 4:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 17 (WP-Mark Yokel 12-0)  Sky & Sky Inc 10 (LP-Larry Newman 12-9)

Sky & Sky took advantage of the Cannons thinned out defense for 1 run before their 10th player showed up in the OF. However, 4 more hits allowed 3 more in the inning for the early 4-0 lead. Not to be outdone, The Cannons pushed 5 across in their next 2 at-bats aided by sloppy defense, 'small ball' hits, and great base-running. In the t-4th, Sky & Sky closed the gap to within 5, using a string of 4 hits, but the teams went back and forth trading runs here and there for a final of 17-10. Yokel cruised to victory, while Newman took the loss.

The Cannons went down in order in the top of the 1st, and Sky put up 4 runs in the bottom half to take an early lead. That lead was short lived as the Cannons scored 5 in the 2nd with all singles and walks, and then another 5 in the top of the 3rd highlighted by a 2 rbi triple by Evan Krietzer. Sky awakened and scored in all of the final 4 innings, but Mark Yokel held on enough to get the 17-10 win. Lou Falcon went 4-5 with 4 singles and 3 rbis. Mike Steller hit another bomb (#5); Neal Charkatz went 1-1 with 3 sac flies for a total of 3 rbis in the game. Mark Yokel went 4-4, as all but one Cannons hitter scored a run in the 1st game.

Game 2:

Havana Club Cannons 5 (WP-Tom Paulshock 8-2)  Sky & Sky Inc 3 (LP-Larry Newman 12-10)

Game two was a defensive struggle after Sky scored 3 in the top of the 1st. The Cannons went in order on 6 straight fly outs through 2 innings, but with one out in the bottom of the 3rd Neal Charkatz got a single to break up Larry Newman's No hit bid. The Cannons had to wait until the bottom of the 4th to get on the board with a seed hit by Mike Steller that hit the fence in the air for a double and scored Edelman from 1st. The Cannons pushed across another run in the 5th highlighted by Steve Hayes' leadoff single and great hustle on the base paths. Tommy was in complete control after the 1st inning, making quick use of the Sky hitters. In the Bottom of the 6th the Cannons finally took the lead with 3 runs. Mark Yokel lead off with a triple down the left field line, and hits by Danny Kassel and Mike Ginsberg and Lou Falcon netted the final 3 runs of the game. Tommy nailed the door shut in the top of the 7th, and the Cannons got a well fought and hard victory!

Game 2 saw a much cleaner version of competitive softball. Sky & Sky touched up Tom Paulshock for 3 in the t-1st, while Larry Newman went through the order allowing just 1 hit to the first 10 batters he faced. The Cannons pushed across one in consecutive innings leading to the b-6th, with Sky & Sky clinging to the slimmest of margins. Yokel tripled down the LF line past the drawn in OF. He would score to tie things up as would two more of his teammates taking advantage of 3 errors sprinkled with timely hitting. The tying run reached 1st base in Sky & Sky's t-7th, but to no avail as Tommy shut the door. Final 5-3--Paulshock the winner, while Newman again took the loss.
