2004 PMS at Northwest Regional Park

Week 3:  April 18, 2004

Field 1:
Game 1:
Sky & Sky Inc 10 (WP-Larry Newman 1-0)  Jilly's 1 (LP-Rich Schneider 0-2)

Sky & Sky jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with all five of the first hitters reaching safely and scoring. Both offenses fell flat for the next few innings until Jilly's pushed one across in the fourth off of the bat of Lee Eidleberg. Sky & Sky pushed across four more in the fifth and wound up winning 10-1. Larry Newman got his first win of the season and Richie Scheider took the loss.

After being embarrased by league champion Quizno's to open up the regular season last week, Jilly's did little to impress in week two against Sky and Sky. With as many as seven new faces on the new blue Under Armour sponsored squad...it was more of the same this week, with a liitle improvement on the pitchers mound. Rich Schneider (0-2) was around the plate all morning, but Jilly's could only plate one tally, losing badly in game one, 10-1. Sky opened its regular season with a five-run first and it didn't get any better from there! Jilly's was able to only plate a single run in the top of the 4th, as Lee Eidelberg drove in Jim Silvestri. The only bright spot came from the leadoff spot, as Rob Ressin dinked and slapped two singles and a double going 3-3 on the day, with Under Armour scratching-out only 5 hits.

Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc 8 (WP-Larry Newman 2-0)  Jilly's 3 (LP-Detour Dave Sandler 0-1)

In game two, the two teams played a much closer contest. Sky & Sky manufactured a run in the B-1st, but Marc Summerfield tripled home the tying run. Sky & Sky doubled the damage in the second with a seeing-eye single from Alan Friedman. Jilly's closed the gap to within one, but Scott Felton tripled in a couple in the B-3rd to help Sky & Sky mount a 6-2 lead. Roman Caples doubled home Reggie Ellis, but he got nabbed at third to end the inning. Both teams traded runs with the final few frames with the final 8-3. Larry Newman got his second win, while Dave Sandler was saddled with the loss. Special mention for Rob Ressin who reached base with perfectly guided line drives and ground balls all day, confound each Sky & Sky defensive alignment. He had an amazing day in the field as well, taking away several Sky & Sky extra base hit attempts.

Jilly's tried their third different pitcher (Schneider and Oliner) in Detour Dave Sandler to open up the nightcap. The results were not bad, but Under Armour still lost it's 4th in a row, dropping it, 8-3. Sky started the scoring in the top of the first with a single run. In the bottom, Jilly's missed a golden opportunity to take the lead, but did score the tying run on a Mark Summerfield booming triple to the base of the wall in left field. Sky and Sky turned on the offense in frames two and three, scoring two and three runs respectively, only allowing a single run to Jilly's in the 2nd and 4th innings. Roman Caples, a recent off-season aquisition from the JCC basketball league, got his hitting stroke going...he drove in the last two runs for Jilly's,going two for three (Double) on the day. In all, Detour Dave kept the team close, but timely hitting was not Under Armour's attribute, scattering nine hits over the seven innings. Hitting stars included Caple (2-3, 2b, 2 rbi's), Reggie Ellis (2-3, run scored) and third baseman, Chris Knorr, 1-3 with a run scored.

Jilly's/Under Armour will look to post their first win of the season next week against Mike Herr and the 2-2 Kings

Field 2:
Game 1: Eastern Savings Bank 9 (WP-Ted Winner 2-0)  Kings 2 (LP-Chuck Grant 0-1)

Ted Winner allowed just 7 hits and 2 runs in leading Eastern Savings Bank to a 9-2 opening game victory. ESB spotted Winner with 5 runs in t-2nd. RBI hits by Dave Kopel (2B), Marc Loeb (2 RBI 2B), and Dan Luxenberg gave Winner all of the runs that he would need. 3 more ESB runs in t-3rd on RBI hits by Glenn Ackma, Aaron Shifrin, and Ted Winner provided insurance. Kings starter Chuck Grant hit a solo HR leading off b-3rd, but that was about all of the offense that the Kings could generate.

While last week ESB felt lucky to get in their 2 ballgames and most people had a hard time believing they actually played, this Sunday the weather was perfect and ESB came ready to play, sweeping a doubleheader from the Kings. Ted Winner pitched a brilliant game in the opener as ESB won 9-2. Both teams went down quietly in the first with ESB turning a terrific double play by Russ Zappocosta  and Chris Zoeller. ESB essentially put the game away in the second by scoring 5 runs. Jason Schwartzberg reached on an error and scored on Dave Kopel’s towering double to the fence in left center. Glenn Ackman followed with an rbi single to score Kopel. Aaron Shifrin showing off his new Rickey Henderson-like physique roped a single to score Glenn. After Ted lined out to first, catcher Mark Loeb delivered a clutch 2 run single to put ESB up 5-0. ESB scored 3 more times in the 3rd .LF. Jim Davis started the inning with a single. Schwartzberg followed with a single and then Ackman, Shifrin and Winner had rbi’s to make it 8-0.The Kings and their tough formidable lineup came right back and scored quickly on a mammoth home run by pitcher Chuck Grant. The Kings pushed across 1 more run in the inning to complete their scoring in the opener. Ben Gutman doubled in the 6th and Russ singled him home to send the previously undefeated Kings home with their first loss 9-2.

Offensive Stars:
ESB: Glen Ackman (2-3,2 R,1 RBI), Jason Schwartzberg (1B,2 R,1 RBI), Jim Davis (2 1B,1 R), Aaron Shifrin (2-3,1 R,2 RBI)
Kings: Dave Mize (2-3), Mike Herr (1-1,1 RBI, SF)

Other Highlights:
ESB: Ted Winner pitching 7 strong innings.

Game 2: Eastern Savings Bank 12 (WP-Ted Winner 3-0)  Kings 6 (LP-Dan Frignito 0-1)

Kings did show some offense early on scoring 4 runs in t-1st before the first out was recorded, but a controversial play kept the Kings from doing further damage. The controversy occurred with Kings runners on the corners with 1 out. Kings batter Chuck Grant hit a grounder towards the bag at 3B. Kings Alan Varhaftik was struck by the ball while in contact with the base, but instead of the ball becoming dead since the thirdbaseman was playing behind the 3B bag, the umpire ruled the ball IN PLAY and ESB turned a 5-4-3 doubleplay with the LIVE ball. ESB then went ahead with 6 runs of their own in the b-1st inning. Key hits by ESB were a Jim Davis RBI 1B, Jason Schwartzberg 2 RBI 3B, and Glenn Ackman 2 RBI 3B. ESB pushed ahead 5 more runs against Kings game 2 starter Dan Frignito in b-2nd to take a 11-4 lead. Chuck Grant relieved Frignito and allowed just 2 hits in the final 4 innings, but the Kings were again unable to muster much offense against ESB's Ted Winner and David Finkelstein.

Ted Winner reenergized in between games on a steady diet of doughnuts and power-ade, ran (o.k., walked quickly) out to the mound to pitch game 2. The Kings, aided by a 3 base error to open the game scored 4 quick runs. Last year ESB might have panicked, however , this year is totally different. With our 5 new additions ESB feels that they are never out of a game. This wisdom proved true with ESB scoring 6 runs in the first and 5 in the second to take an 11-4 lead. Manager David Finkelstein pitched the next 3 innings and held the Kings scoreless while ESB scored another run in the 5th. Winner came back in and gave up 2 meaningless runs to secure the victory for ESB for a final score of 12-6.

Offensive Stars:
Kings:  Dave Mize (4-4,1 R,2 RBI,2B), Ken Zalis (2-3,2 R,1 RBI,W), Dan Frignito (2-3,1 R,W)
ESB: Jim Davis (2-2,2 R,1 RBI,W), Jason Schwartzberg (2-3,2 R,3 RBI, 3B), Gabe Silber (1-2,2 R,1 RBI,W), Glenn Ackman (2-3,3 R,2 RBI,2 3B). Johnny Feldman single, run scored and a defensive gem to help save the game

Field 3:
Game 1: Northwest Corridor 12 (WP-Dave Stein 1-1)  NEK Entertainment 11 (LP-David Pridgen 0-2)

There was a lot of hype and anticipation for the heated rivalry of NWC vs NEK. The NWC started things off with a big David Stein homer over the fence in the first inning. This was followed by a 5 run 2nd inning. Jason Ott and Aaron Birenbaum both tripled a couple runs home. NEK added 3 runs in the 4th which were countered by an NWC 4run 4th inning. Birenbaum, Pollak, Landsman and Liner led off the inning with 4 hits in a row and stretched the NWC lead to 10-4 going into the 6th. Instead of closing the deal and finishing the game off a few errors and misplays allowed NEK to score 5 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th to make game 1 an exciting battle. NWC won this game for Chgad Birenbaum who is having hip surgery this weeka nd Kenya Merritt who broke his thumb last week.

Game 1 of this rivalry series was good from beginning to end. NWC got off to a great start putting up 6 runs in the first two innings. They played tough defense and had great pitching in a game they led from beginning to end. However, NEK's bats arrived during the second half of the game. Some great hits and a great catch against the fence by N.E.K's Rashaad Johnson in the bottom of the sixth inning had N.E.K in position to finish a great come back. However, NWC held on with a runner threatening with two outs.

Offensive Stars:
NWC: David Stein HR to LCF in 1st inning. David Stein (4-4 hr 3rbi), Aaron Birenbaum (3-3 2b 3b 3r 2rbi)
NEK: Homerun Steve Hanson (1). Jason Gardner (3-4) and Steve Hanson (3-4)

Other Highlights:
NWC: Aaron Birenbaum spinning throw from 3B to get runner out at 1B in b-5th. Also firing from 3B to get next runner also out at 1B.

Game 2: NEK Entertainment 16 (WP-Andre Vaughn 1-1)  Northwest Corridor 8 (LP-Howard Goldberg 0-2)

NWC struck early again. They started the second game just like the first with an early homerun. After the bomb hit by Howard Goldberg, Andre Vaughn got in a zone. He put up a great effort leading NEK to there first win of the season. NEK had it's best offensive effort ever. Frederick Neal and David Priden (towering shot) hit back to back bombs to get NEK rolling. A third shot was hit by Brian Mayle. NEK played tough defense all game. Especially, Marquis "Japan" Garrett who played a great game holding down the hot spot.

NWC jumped out to another early lead from a towering homerun over the centerfield fence by Howard Goldberg. This lead didin't last long, it awakened the NEK bats big time. NEK led off the bottom of the 1st with the first 4 batters all scoring. Neal and Bern hit back to back homeruns to left and NEK never looked back. NWC didn't have the same fire as game 1 and could never stage a rally. 5 runs in the 6th and 7th innings were not enough to rally back from their early hole. Aaron Birenbaum played a very solid 3rd base all day and Rahsaad from NEK probably is the best centerfielder in the league. He runs down balls that drop against every team in this league. NEK and NWC are fierce rivals and always play each other tight. Today's split was fun softball.

Offensive Stars:
NWC: Howard Goldberg(1) HR to CF in 1st inning. Joey Liner (3-4), Aaron Birenbaum (2-3 2r 3b), Jon Goldman 4-6 for the day
NEK: Homeruns: David Pridgen(1), Brian Mayle (1), and Frederick Neal (1). Jason Gardner, Stephen Georgie, Steve Hanson, David Pridgen, Peter Griffin, Marquis Garrtt, Eugene Mattison all contributed to the offensive explosion.

Other Highlights:
NEK: Game ending doubleplay.

Field 4:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 12 (WP-Mark Yokel 2-0)  Hops Hounds 2 (LP-Jay Gomberg 0-2)

Hops pushed a run across playing small ball in the bottom of the 1st inning, and the Cannons went quiet in innings 1 and 2. But in the 3rd, Lou Falcon led off with a single and the flood gates opened. 6 hits, 2 walks, and 7 runs crossed the plate in the top of the 3rd, highlighted by Dan Kassel's bases loaded single plating 3 runs. The Cannons followed in the top of the 4th with another 5 runs, hits by Mike Ginsberg (4 rbi's in game 1) and Mike Stellar plated 3 runs. Mark Yokel (2-0) settled in and shut down the expansion Hops for his 2nd victory of the year.

Offensive Stars:
Hounds: Alex Newman 3B, Kory Rosenberg (1-2,3B)

Game 2: Havana Club Cannons 10 (WP-Tom Paulshock 2-0)  Hops Hounds 2 (LP-Steve Hoffman 0-1)

Tommy Paulshock (2-0) again threw 7 solid innings, striking out 4 batters and coasting to his second win of the year. Game two hitting stars for the Cannons were Chuck Easter (3-4, 2 Rbis, 1 run, and HR #2 ) and Lou Falcon (2-2, BB, 2 Rbi's 2 runs). A solid defensive game was played by the Cannons, starting with the 1st batter in the top of the 1st as Jeff Kurland made a diving stab in LCF to rob the Hounds of a game starting double.

Offensive Stars:
Hounds: Kory Rosenberg (3-3,2B), Brad Rosenberg clutch RBI 2B, Anthony Russel clutch RBI single

Other Highlights
Hounds:
*
Flashing the leather, Alex Newman to Lee Braverman in a beautiful 6-4-3 double play.

* Lee Braverman caught a pop up at 2B, then threw a runner out at the plate with Matt Friedman covering.
