2004 PMS at Northwest Regional Park

Week 5:  May 2, 2004

Field 1:
Game 1: Quizno's 19 (WP-Lane Gordon 3-0)  Hops Hounds 1 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-2)  4 INNINGS

The Hounds were no match for the strong Quiznos defense and relentless offense today.  Kory Rosenberg pitched well giving up only a minimal amount of walks and earned runs.  It was the errors in the field that took the Hounds out of the game.  Kory Rosenberg pitched a very good game otherwise.  Anthony Russel scored the only run of the game for the Hounds hit in by a shot down the third base line by Karlo Young.

9 Hits, 2 Reaching Base on Errors, 3 Walks, and 12 Runs.  That was the line for the First inning for the 2- Time Defending Champion Quizno's Owings Mills team.  Craig Dlin led the way by going 3-4 with a Triple and 2 Singles.  Every player scored at least 1 Run in the game as it became a track meet around the bases.  Jon Koman and Mike Jenkins each scored 3 times as The "Blue Wave" cruised to an easy victory over a very inexperienced Hops Hounds team.

Game 2: Quizno's 18 (WP-Jeff Harris 3-0)  Hops Hounds  2(LP-Steve Hoffman 0-2)  5 INNINGS

It was the same story as in Game #1 as "The Blue Wave" got on the board quickly by scoring 5 Runs in the First Inning and cruised to an easy victory by the scored or 18-2 (5 Innings).  Craig Dlin and Mark Rosenstein each had 3 Hits and scored 3 Times.  Jeff Harris pitched the second game for the victory and seems to be getting stronger after undergoing off season shoulder surgery.  Joel Koman made his season debut and delivered 3 hits after sitting out the first 3 weeks due to a disagreement with his agent about his current contract status and a lower back strain.

In the second game, Steve Hoffman pitched for the Hounds and Lee Braverman closed the game.  Again, Quiznos hit the ball well putting the Hounds in their place as an expansion team.  The Hounds have some work to do, but the fight has not yet begun.

Notes for Quizno's Owings Mills:
* Quizno's Owings Mills has now won 18 consecutive games dating back to last year.  They have not lost a game since Eastern Savings Bank defeated them 9-2 in Week 13 of last season (Ted Winner over Jeff Harris).

Game 2: Havana Club Cannons 12 (WP-Tom Paulshock 4-0)  Kings 5 (LP-Dan Frignito 1-2)

More of the same as the Cannons continued to pound the ball, this time against Kings starter Dan Frignito.  Battery mates Dan Kassel and Tom Paulshock kept Kings hitters off balance most of the game in recording a 12-5 victory.  Cannons jumped out to 10-0 lead, but Kings put up 2 runs in b-5th and 3 runs in b-6th, to at least make the final score respectable.  Chuck Grant hit a 2 out bases loaded double to score all 3 Kings runs in b-6th.  Paulshock improved his pitching record to 4-0.  This was Paulschock's 4th multi-strikeout game.  He induced many ugly swings.

Kurland improved his managerial record to 2-0, while the Cannons improved overall to 8-0.

Hitting Stars:
Cannons: Chuck Easter (4-4, 2 HR, 4runs, 4 RBI's),  Jeff Kurland (2-4, HR(1)), Frank Valois (3-4,2 R,2 RBI), Lou Falcon continued his hot hitting going 3-4.

Field 4:
Game 1:
Eastern Savings Bank 15 (WP-Ted Winner 5-0 )  Jilly's 8 (LP-Kevin Oliner 0-3)

Even though in ice skating figure eights are a thing of beauty, in softball the number 8 is ominous when that’s how many players your opponent brings to Sunday’s game. That’s the way it was this week with Jilly’s only fielding 8 for Sunday’s thrilla in Owings Milla. Truth be told it wasn’t that thrilling but ESB showed true sportsmanship by not calling the games a forfeit and even giving the competition some of our players so that the games should go on. ESB and starter Ted Winner started off sluggishly on this beautiful May afternoon by giving up 3 runs in the first. However ESB came back with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Tim Palo led off with a single . Chris Zoeller (3-4 ,  3 runs scored) followed with a single. Jim Davis (3-4,  3 runs scored, 2 rbi’s) drove home the first run with a single. Jason Schwartzman (2-4, 2rbi’s)drove home the 2nd with a scorching double to the right-center field gap. The other 2 runs scored on a sac fly by Sam Luxenberg and a triple to the right field fence by Glenn Ackman(4-4, 2triples and 2 doubles, 2rbi’s, 2runs scored) ESB chalked up one more run in the 2nd and 3 more in the 3rd. Jilly’s tied the score in the 4th by scoring 5 runs with some timely hitting and a slew of walks by ESB. After that Winner was dominating and ESB closed out the scoring with 2 in the 4th, 3 in the 6th and2 in the 7th for a final score of 15-8. Other hitting stars were Winner 3-3 rbi, run scored and Ben Guttman who was traded to Jilly’s for game 1 and had 2 rbi’s. Winner improved to 5-0.

Jillys/Under Armour has hit rock bottom! In one of the most embarrassing weekends in recent memory, the former front runner is buried in last place and in its game against Eastern Savings Bank, Jilly's did not even have the required (9) players present to field a team.  If not for the kindness of "Rabbi" David Finkelstein, the games would have ended in forfeit with the team missing Reggie Ellis, Warren Scudder, Roman Caples and Kevin Kelch to parts unknown.  ESB "loaned Jilly's two players for game one and one player for game two as Kevin Oliner's brother Bryan came after a desperation call!

It didn't really matter. . . Although after 3 1/2 innings of game one, the game was tied 8-8.  ESB then turned on the jets, scoring 5 runs in the last three innings to win, going away, 14-9.  Jim Silvestri got is stroke going with two triples, going 3-4 with 3 rbi's and two runs scored.  Harry Schevker and Detour Dave chipped in with two hits a-piece.

Game 2: Eastern Savings Bank 17 (WP-David Finkelstein 3-0 )  Jilly's 1 (LP-Dave Sandler 0-3)  5 INNINGS

In game 2 the story was dominating pitching by game 2 starter David Finkelstein and awesome defense by ESB led by Chris Zoeller. After allowing 1 unearned run in the top of the first ESB answered with 17 runs over the next 5 innings for a 17-1 victory. ESB pushed across 4 in the first,3in the second,6 in the third and 2 in the 4th as the game was called after 5. Again ESB gave Jilly’s a player so that they would have a full team  (Tim Palo). Hitting stars for ESB were Jason Schwarzberg.  2 hits and a walk ,3 runs scored), Gabe Silber 3-3,5rbi’s,2 runs scored and, Russ Zappocosta2-2 ,run scored. Sam Luxenberg ,Glenn Ackman, Aaron Shifrin, Mark Loeb, Alan Lazerow and the Rabbi also had rbi’s.

It appeared Jilly's had given-up! ESB jumped on starter Dave Sandler (0-3) for 4 runs in the 1st, 3 runs in the 2nd and exploded for 6 runs in the third. Easily taking the nite-cap 15-1 in 5 innings behind the "Rabbi's one-hitter. Jim Silvestri's single was the only tally for the basement dwelling Under Armour squad.

Co-Managers Robbie Ressin and Dave Sandler have scheduled a closed door session to discuss the teams future.  Possible changes could take place as early as this week.  Jilly's faces NWC next Sunday continuing to look for its first victory of the season.
