2004 PMS at Northwest Regional Park
Week 6: May 9, 2004
Field 1:
Game 1: Jilly's Under Armour 16 (WP-Rich
Schneider 1-2) Northwest Corridor 4 (LP-David Stein 1-3)
5 INNINGS
Jilly's/Under Armour has finally climbed out of the
cellar! On a Sunny Mother's Day Sunday, Jilly's/Under Armour has finally
recorded its first victory of the season. A combination of decent pitching,
timely hitting and a favorable schedule all helped as Jilly's recorded a
double-header sweep to climb all-the-way into sixth place.
In Game one vs. Northwest Corridor, Under Armour jumped in early, posting a six
run inning with Detour Dave providing the key blow with a bases loaded single,
to drive in two. After one in the 2nd, Jilly's finished its scoring with nine
players crossing the plate in the 4th...Harry Schevker went the opposite way
with a slicing homer to right, knocking in three. Rich Schneider (1-2) appeared
to be in control the whole way gaining confidence in each inning...Final score
16-4 in a 5-inning affair. Hitting stars included Sandler (2-2, triple, 2 rbi's,
BB), Schevker (2-2, HR, triple, 3 rbi's, 3 runs), Jim Silvestri (2-2, 2 rbi's
and 2 runs).
Jilly's/Under Armour jumped all over NWC with 6 1st inning runs. They capitalized on NWC errors and walks. 6 of Jilly's runs came off baserunners who reached via free pass. The bats were quiet for NWC, Eric Wingrat,s 3 run homer was the lone bright spot of game 1.
Game 2: Jilly's Under Armour 15 (WP-Kevin Oliner 1-3) Northwest Corridor 13 (LP-Howard Goldberg 0-4)
In Game two...Jilly's had to come from behind...after
scoring one in the first, Kevin Oliner's (1-3) defense let him down as RF Kevin
Kelch allowed two singles to get by him for four runs...NWC was leading 4-1.
After tying to score at four in the 3rd, Warren Scudder providing the big blow
with a bases loaded 2 run single, it was that big fourth inning again for
Jilly's. A six run top of the fourth put Jilly's up 10-4...the combination of
Sandler and Schevker accounted for 4 rbi's (Sandler pulled up lame rounding 2nd
on a double against the right-field fence...he is listed as day to day with a
strained hamstring). In the 5th, it was five more for Jilly's with Harry
Schevker knocking in two more, but NWC came up with five of their own and
then four more in the sixth to narrow the Under Armour lead to 15-13. NWC loaded
the bases with two-out in the bottom of the 7th...But a bloop fly-ball was
caught by RCF Roman Caples "basket-catch style to preserve the victory and allow
Jilly's/Under Armour to leap over NWC, Hops Hounds and NEK to get into sixth
place.
Game 2 started off much differently. NWC Jumped out to a 4-1 lead going into the 3rd. David Stein and Jeff Luna both hit 2 run homers in the bottom of the 1st. Jilly's struck back quickly scoring 14 runs over the next 3 innings. Most of the hits came from timely singles and 6 batters who reached base on walks eventually scored. NWC was not going to give up. 5 runs in the 5th and 4 runs scored in the 6th brought them back within striking distance. David Stein hit another homer, this one a 3 run shot. Joey Liner had a 2run homer and the NWC went into the bottom of the 7th down only 2 runs. Three straight singles by Goldberg , Luna and Landsman loaded the bases with 2 out and the winning run on 1st base. Jilly's was able to hold on getting the last out and closing out an exciting game
The celebrating will be short-lived for Jilly's as it now has to put all of its
concentration on the 1st place Cannons and the pitching combination of Yokel and
Paulshock before its two-week layoff with a bye week and Memorial Day weekend
upcoming.
Field 2:
Game 1:
Havana Club Cannons 11 (WP-Mark Yokel 5-0) Sky & Sky Inc 4 (LP-Larry Newman
5-2)
In the top half of the 1st Sky plated two runs, and they held that 2-0 lead until the bottom of the 3rd when Danny Kassel scored on a line drive single by Chuck Easter. From there the Cannons erupted for 10 runs in the next 3 innings to take a solid 11-4 win. Kassel had 3 hits and scored 3 runs. Frank Valois launched a monster shot to deep right field for his 3rd homerun of the year. Mike (the glove) Steller made two sensational defensive diving plays at SS.
Sky & Sky started the top of the 1st with 2 runs as the
first 4 batters reached base. Cannons answered with 1 run in the bottom of the
3rd. Expectant dad Brian Sky lined a home run to right field making the score
3-1 in the top of the 4th. Cannons came alive as Sky & Sky went to sleep by
scoring 4 runs in both the 4th and 5th, and 2 more in the 6th while Sky only
added 1 more in the 6th. Final score: Cannons 11, Sky & Sky 4. Eric Gertner and
Steve Truitt each had 3 hits for the Sky team.
Game 2:
Sky & Sky Inc 7 (WP-Larry Newman 6-2)
Havana Club Cannons 6 (LP-Tom Paulshock 4-1)
Game 2 was a thriller. The Cannons plated 1 in the top of
the 1st on a rbi single by Mike Steller. Sky came roaring back with 4 in the
bottom half. Then in the top of the 2nd the Cannons erupted again for 4 runs
highlighted by 5 singles. (Kurland, Ginsberg, Falcon, Kassel, and Kreitzer). The
game stood 5-4 until the top of the 5th,when the Cannons pushed 1 run across;
but not without plenty of drama. Tom Paulshock threw a changeup to Dave Kowitz,
and Dave waiting on it ripped a line drive right up the middle that hit Tommy in
the face. Tommy was able somehow to get his hand in front of the ball to
slightly to take some of the pressure, but the ball was scorched back at him.
After a few warm-ups Tommy showed his toughness and got the last batter of the
inning on a ground out.
Tommy showed no ill affects from the line drive, and cleaned up in the bottom if
the 6th inning as well. With the Cannons leading 6-4 in the bottom of the 7th
inning, things started to get shaky. Tommy walked the first 3 batters, and a
bloop hit knocked in one run. With the bases loaded a ground ball to SS Mike
Steller was turned into an unassisted DP, but the tying run scored on the play.
With 2 outs, runner on third and a tie game, Sky's 10th batter, Mike Rottenberg,
hit a seeing eye single between Neal Charkatz and Mike Stellar that went into
left field and capped a 3 run bottom of the 7th comeback win for Sky and Sky
7-6.
Playing tough, Cannons pitcher Tommy Paulshock overcame a
shaky 4 run 1st inning by not allowing another hit or walk for the next 5
innings (which included a line-shot by Sky & Sky's David Kowitz to his face)
only to see his well pitched game vanish in the bottom of the 7th. With 3
leadoff walks, an Eric Gertner RBI single (5-6 on the day), a run-scoring
double-play tying the game at 6 all and leaving a man on third, Magic Mike
Rottenberg singled home the game winner and gave Sky & Sky their first win
against the Cannons in 2 years.
This was the 1st game of the year that Cannons didn't score in double figures,
but this loss will only serve to motivate for the future!
Field 3:
Game 1: Quizno's Owings Mills 7 (WP-Lane Gordon 4-0)
Eastern Savings Bank 6 (LP-Ted Winner 5-1)
Ted Winner started off the day for his teammates at ESB by revealing that he had the flu all week and was really weak and had lost 12 pounds. To be honest nobody knew where he lost the pounds from. Manager David Finkelstein decided to keep Winner on a 200 pitch count for game one. He would need every one of those pitches and yet somehow kept ESB in the game before they lost in the 7th by the final score of 7-6. The story of the day was old friend and teammate Lane Gordon who has a knack for getting himself into trouble and then out again. ESB had four runners in scoring position in the first three innings with less than two outs and Gordon did not allow one run to cross the plate. Quizno's scored two in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third for a 4-0 lead. ESB came back in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3. Jason Schwartzberg started off the rally with a single and Sam Luxenberg hit another single. Russ Zappocosta followed with a rbi single and Ted Winner helped his own cause with a single to plate Luxenberg with run number two. Catcher Mark Loeb took a walk and then Ben Gutman took another walk to force in the third run. Quizno's showed their resiliency by scoring two in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth for 7-3 lead. ESB would not go quietly. They scored two runs at the top of the sixth to slice the lead to 7-5. Big hits in the inning were Luxenberg 3-3 two runs scored, and Winner. That is when things got interesting. Chris Zoeller and Glenn Ackman hit singles and Jason knocked in the sixth run for ESB. However, on the same play manager and third base coach Finkelstein made a bad call and caused some confusion. Ackman was rounding third heading for home with the tieing run and the players got their signals mixed and Ackman was tagged out at third for a disheartening loss. Winner got the loss to move to 5-1 and Gordon got the win and Quizno's winning streak was safe for now.
Quizno's Owings Mills faced their toughest opponent of the
season thus far and escaped with a 8-7 victory over Eastern Savings Bank. Russ
Seamster and Bobby Morrow each muscled homeruns over the fence for the Blue
Wave- but it was some heads up defense that won this one for the 2-Time
Defending Champions. With Runners on 1st and 3rd with the score 8-6 and 2 outs
in the top of the 7th inning- Eastern Savings Bank blooped a single down the
right field line. Right Fielder Russ Dlin dove but could not make the catch.
With the runner at 3rd easily scoring to make it 8-7, Dlin quickly relayed the
throw to SS Mark Rosenstein. ESB's Glen Ackman (who was on 1st) over-ran third
base and was eventualy tagged out in a run down between 3rd Base and Home by
Rosenstein to end the game. Final score- Quizno's Owings Mills- 8 Eastern
Savings Bank- 7
Game 2: Eastern Savings Bank 10 (WP-Ted Winner 6-1)
Quizno's Owings Mills 9 (LP-Jeff Harris 3-1)
Quizno's Owings Mills lost a game for the 1st time in 10
Weeks (19 Consecutrive Wins) dating back to last season- thanks to a 2- Out
3-Run Blast by ESB's Jim Davis in the Bottom of the 6th. Quizno's Owings Mills
trailed for the first time all season trailing 7-6 going into the top of the
6th. The Blue Wave quickly erased the deficit as Russ Dlin led off the inning
with a towering HR over the left center field fence to tie the score at 7-7.
Russ Seamster then walked and was moved to 3rd on a Single by Andrew Rosenstein.
Bobby Morrow and Mark Rosenstein each followed with RBI "lazers" to help The
Blue Wave take the lead, 9-7. ESB rallied in the Bottom half of the 6th inning
and utimately took the lead and the 1-Run Victory on Jim Davis's first hit of
the day- a first pitch, 3-Run HR. Quizno's Owings Mills went silently in their
last at-bat in the 7th inning to suffer their 1st loss of the season.
In game two ESB showed the heart of a champion by scoring three in the sixth for
a 10-9 victory. The big story of the game was Jim Davis' line drive two run
homer to win the game for ESB. Quizno's scored one in the first and one in the
second for a 2-0 lead. ESB tied the game with a run in the second and another in
the third. The first run scored on a single by Gutman and a towering triple to
left by Alan Lazerow. The second run scored on a sac fly by Jim Davis. Quizno's
scored two in the fourth for a 4-2 lead ESB came back in the bottom of the
fourth with a run to cut the deficit to 4-3 with Luxenberg scoring the third
run. Quiznos scored two more in the fifth for a 6-3 lead and things looked bleak
for ESB. However, ESB scored four in the bottom of the fifth for their first
lead of the day 7-6. Zoeller who had a strong second game got a key hit along
with Ackman, Schwartzberg, Luxenberg and Lazerow. Quiznos would not go away.
They scored three runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-7 lead. ESB, the last
team to beat Quiznos wanted to pin another loss on them. Russ started the inning
by getting to second on a two base error. Pinch hitter Aaron Shifren hit a sack
fly to move Zappocosta to third. Zoeller brought him home with a single. After a
fly out, Jim Davis saved his best for last with a two run blast for 10-9 lead.
Winner made it hold up and as Lazerow squeezed the last out in deep right field
ESB had their victory. Winner moved his record to 6-1 heading into the bye week
for ESB.
Notes for Quizno's Owings Mills:

Field 4:
Game 1: Kings 7
(WP-Mike Herr 2-0) Hops Hounds
(LP-Darron Tabatznik 0-1)
The young Hounds put forth a solid effort against the veteran Kings, but the Kings prevailed 7-4 in a well played defensive effort by both teams. The Hounds took a 1-0 lead in b-1st on 1 out triple by Steve Hoffman, with Hoffman scoring on an infield error with 2 outs. The Kings pulled even in t-2nd on 3B by Chuck Grant and RBI single by Josh Frederick. Grant's 3B, however, was costly as Grant re-aggravated a leg injury legging out the hit. Grant was forced to leave the game the following inning. Kings grabbed lead in t-3rd. Leadoff walks to Richard Wong (2-2,1 R,1 RBI,W) and Marc Goldstein were followed by RBI single by Kenny Salzman, RBI single by Ken Zalis, 2 RBI triple by Shilo Merwitz (1-3,1 R,2 RBI,3B) , and RBI SF by Alan Varhaftik. A total of 5 Kings runners crossed the plate in t-3rd giving Kings 6-1 leads. Hounds put on pressure with 2 runs in b-4th. With 2 outs and nobody on, Anthony Russel tripled, Mike Beverly singled (RBI) and Karlo Young tripled (RBI). Hounds scored a single run in b-6th to pull within 6-4, but Kings pushed across an insurance run in t-7th on a Richard Wong RBI single.
The Kings held on to a lead all game to pull out the
victory. Offensive highlights for the Hounds were a triple by Steve Hoffman and
Karlo Young, a double by Matt Friedman, and Anthony Russel slugged both a double
and triple. Single hits by Lee Braverman, Alex Newman, Mike Beverly, and Skyler
Newman began to show the hitting potential of the Hounds.
Notes:
Darron Tabatznik made his first start of the
season for Hops Hounds. Tabatznik allowed just 10 hits over the 7 innings, while
walking 4. Mike Herr pitched a complete game for the Kings, who were without #2
starter Dan Frignito. Tim Palo had a pinch-hit single for the Hounds in b-7th--
Palo leaving ESB to join the Hounds for the remainder of the season. Hounds #1
starter Jay Gomberg missed the game with a back injury. Kings 1B Josh Frederick
returned to the team, missing 1 week with a finger injury.
Game 2: Kings 13
(WP-Chuck Grant 3-2) Hops
Hounds 1 (LP-Lee Braverman 0-1)
The Kings dominated game 2 behind the 1 hit pitching of Chuck Grant over 5 innings. Despite his leg injury in game 1, Grant was able to pitch, and pitch effectively he most certainly did, allowing just a 1st inning 3B to Kory Rosenberg, while walking none. In Hounds t-1st, Lee Braverman reached on a ground ball error and with 2 outs, Rosenberg crushed a triple to the warning track over the head of Kings LCF Jan Katzen, scoring Braverman. In Kings b-1st, Kenny Salzman led off with a 3B against game 2 starter Lee Braverman. Salzman scored on Mike Herr's RBI groundout. Shilo Merwitz walked, moved to second base on another infield groundout, and Merwitz scored on Alan Varhaftik's RBI single to CF. The lead would remain with the Kings the rest of the way. The Kings took advantage of 5 walks in b-2nd, adding 5 runs when 4 of the batters walked scored. Keegan Rettaliata hit a 2 RBI 3B in b-3rd. Mike Herr (single RBI), Dave Mize (single 2 RBI), and Josh Frederick (single RBI) came thru with hits in b-4th, giving Kings 13-1 lead. Chuck Grant retired the final 13 Hounds batters in order, producing a 5 inning, 13-1 slaughter rule victory for the Kings.
Offensive stars for the Kings in game 2 were Shilo Merwitz (1-1,2 R,1 RBI,2 W), Dave Mize (2-3,1 R,4 RBI), Josh Frederick (2-2,2 R,1 RBI,W), Keegan Rettaliata (2-3,1 R,2 RBI,3B). Each team committed just 1 error in the nightcap.
Notes:
On the day, Kings Kenny Salzman and Keegan Rettaliata hit 2 triples each. The 2
teams combined for 10 triples in the doubleheader, with only 2 doubles, and 0
homeruns. Marc Goldstein sustained a back injury in game 1, but entered game 2
as a pinch-runner for Chuck Grant in b-2nd.
