Week 7:  May 16, 2004

Field 1:
Game 1: Kings 16 (WP-Mike Herr 3-0)  NEK Entertainment 1 (LP-Andre Vaughn 1-3)  5 INNINGS

NEK played game 1 of the doubleheader with just 9 players, as co-captains Rashaad Johnson and David Pridgen were on vacation. Rashaad hustled over from the airport, but by the time he arrived, NEK had dropped the opener to the Kings 16-1 in 5 innings. Mike Herr pitched effectively for the Kings, while the Kings batters took advantage of the 3 man outfield with 17 hits in just 4 at-bats. Shilo Merwitz (2B,RBI), Dave Mize (2B,2 RBI), and Alan Varhaftik (1B,RBI) had RBI hits in the Kings 4 run b-1st. Keegan Rettaliata hit his first league HR in b-2nd, as Kings pushed 9 runs across in the inning. Kings added a solo run in b-3rd on single by Kenny Salzman and RBI double by Jeff Slutzker. NEK scored their only run of the game in t-4th. Keith and Kevin Purnell had lead off singles. Following a forceout of Keith at thirdbase, Stephen Georgie grounded out to SS, but the relay throw to firstbase to double-up Georgie got away, and Purnell came around to score. Kings added 2 more runs in t-4th on RBI 3B by Ken Zalis and RBI single by Richard Wong.

Game 2:  Kings 13 (WP-Chuck Grant 4-2)  NEK Entertainment 9 (LP-Andre Vaughn 1-4)

Rashaad Johnson and Frederick Neal arrived between games of the doubleheader to aid the NEK squad, and game 2 was a much closer affair, with the Kings coming out the victors 13-9.  Kings took advantage of 8 errors by the NEK defense, leading to 8 unearned runs against NEK game 2 starter Andre Vaughn. Kings starter Chuck Grant again battled thru a leg injury to get credited with his 4th win of the season, while the Kings defense committed just 2 errors.

Jeff Slutzker (2 RBI) and Dan Frignito (RBI) had singles in the Kings t-1st to give Kings 3-0 lead. Peter Griffin doubled for NEK in b-1st to plate the first run, while Griffin scored on an outfield throwing error. NEK evened the score 3-3 on RBI single by Keith in b-2nd. Slutzker's RBI single in t-3rd put Kings ahead 4-3. Maintaining the 4-3 lead into t-5th, Kings exploded for 6 runs. Field 2:
Game 1:
Quizno's Owings Mills 24 (WP-Lane Gordon 5-0)  Sky & Sky Inc 8 (LP-Larry Newman 6-3)

Quizno's Owings Mills scored 10 Runs in the first 2 Innings to coast to a 24-8 pounding of Sky & Sky. The stats were impressive for the 2-Time Defending Champions as 9 of the 11 starters had at least 2 hits- and all 11 players scored. Larry Henderson, Russ Dlin, Russ Seamster, Joel Koman, Mike Jenkins, and Todd Pobletts all had 3 hits apiece. Joel Koman also blasted a 3-run homer- his first homerun of ths season- over dead center field with 2 outs in a 6 Run 2nd inning. Lane Gordon notched the victory and lost a few ounces as the Blue Wave rolled to victory in the sweltering heat.

Right from the first error of the game about 10 ft. in front of home plate, this game was destined to be a Quiznos highlight reel. Four first inning bobbles by Sky & Sky's lackluster defense plus several hot shots off of Quiznos' bats, placed the defending champions in a position to cruise to a 24-8 victory as Lane Gordon defeated Larry Newman.

Game 2: Quizno's Owings Mills 7 (WP-Jeff Harris 4-1)  Sky & Sky Inc 1 (LP-Larry Newman 6-4)
Without the services of the vociferous coach Andrew Rosenstein again for game #2- Quizno's Owings Mills quietly scored 6 quick runs in the 1st inning and completed the sweep of Sky & Sky by the score of 7-1. Jeff Harris again pitched a masterpiece for yet another victory. The Blue Wave was led by Mark Rosenstein, Tony Luna, and Todd Pobleets who went a combined 6-8 in the game. The rest of the team went only 5 for 22- good enough for a tongue lashing by Coach Rosenstein when he gets back from the Big Apple.

Game 2 brought about the same first inning, swiss cheese, defense as 6 infield errors allowed 6 runs to cross in Quiznos' b-1st. However, each pitcher clamped down the opposition bats the rest of the way, for a 7-1 Quiznos victory. Jeff Harris over Larry Newman in the victory.

Notes for Quizno's Owings Mills:
► 10 of their 30 total runs were scored in the 1st inning.
► Todd Pobletts- 5/7 in the Double Header.
► 7 Runs in Game #2 were scored by 7 Different Players.
► Quizno's Owings Mills has not lost 2 games in a row in 2 years.

Field 3:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 9 (WP-Mark Yokel 6-0)  Jilly's Under Armour 0 (LP-Rich Schneider 1-3)

Jilly's/Under Armour played another top team and it was another doubleheader loss. This time, at the hands of the Havana Club Cannons.

It was a case of too much Mark Yokel and not enough offense, with a masterful shut out thrown by Yokel.. The Jilly's hitting attack had only an anemic 5 hits (only one, Eidelberg 2B for extra bases) enroute to a 9-0 white-washing. Rich Schneider took the loss. The Cannons Defense was the main highlight of this game, as the Ginsberg, Steller to Easter combination hit for multiple double plays. Lou Falcon was the hitting star for the Cannons going 3-3 with 2 Rbi's and 3 very hard hit singles. Neal Charkatz and Jeff Kurland had 2 hit games.

Game 2: Havana Club Cannons 9 (WP-Mark Yokel 7-0)  Jilly's Under Armour 3(LP-Kevin Oliner 1-4)

Tommy P's normal slot in the rotation came up, but Tommy flew to California earlier in the week to be with his daughter for birth of his second grandchild. Mark Yokel picked up where he left off throwing a nice game, and getting himself out of many jams with ground ball double plays galore, again. There were 5 infield fly rules in the double header, and a total of 7 double plays turned by both teams.

In game two...the tone was set on the very 1st pitch, as Chuck Easter went deep over the right-center-field fence off loser Kevin Oliner. Jilly's did put runners consistently on base (scattering 11 hits), but the Cannons were too strong up the middle, turning 8 double-plays in the twin bill, winning 9-3. Pitchers Kevin Oliner and Rich Schneider went a combined 5-6 in game two hitting, but the top of the lineup did not come thru...

Jilly's/Under Armour will now get a chance to reflect on the first six weeks of the season...they will take advantage of a bye week and then the Memorial Day weekend off day to go on a long cruise to a remote island and eat nothing, but the tree bark and nectar from a special extract and align the moons into position to come back strong and healthy facing the expansion Hop Hounds on June 6th.

Game 2 hitting stars for the Cannons:
► Chuck Easter (2-4, HR, 2B, 4 rbi's, 2 sac flies). Easter had an rbi in all four at bats. His leadoff Homerun was his 5th HR of the season.
► Chris LaTesta also had 3 hits and scored 3 runs.
► The Cannons 7-10 hitters scored 7 of the 9 runs for the Cannons in game 2.

Field 4:
Game 1: Northwest Corridor 15
 (WP-David Stein 2-3)  Hops Hounds 3 (LP-Darron Tabatznik 0-2)

NWC jumped out to an early lead off of a David Stein 2 run homer in the top of the 1st. They added 2 more in the second from timely hitting by Gabe Unterman and Eric Wingrat. NWC had a 9-0 shutout going into the 6th inning but Hops broke that up in the 6th to end the shutout off of a few walks and an Alex Newman basehit. NWC pushed 2 more across in the 6th and 3 more in the 7th to get the victory 15-3. NWC committed zero errors in the game for the 1st time in franchise history. The infield connection of Matt Bell, Jon Goldman and Aaron Birenbaum was superb and flawless.

Game 2: Northwest Corridor 1
9 (WP-Howard Goldberg 1-4)  Hops Hounds 7 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-2)  6 Innings
Game 2 picked up right from where 1 started. NWC jumped out to an early 5-0 lead scoring in the bottom of the 1st. 3 consecutive singles from Goldberg, Goldman and Birenbaum got the inning going. Jason Ott hit a 2run 2b and the NWC was in charge once again. Hops made it interesting by scoring 3 in the top of the 2nd. NWC answered back with 8 runs in their part of the 2nd inning. Jason Ott had another 2run double in the 2nd and Eric Wingrat hit a 2run homer. Leading 13-3 after 2 NWC pushed 2 more in the 4th, 1 in the 5th and 3 to end the game in the bottom of the 6th. Scott Landsman had a walk off bloop single to end the game in 6innings 19-7. Ross Gomer hit his first career homer in the 5th inning.

The Hounds finally started to string some hits together. The rally started with Brad Rosenberg’s double followed by a single by Skyler Newman, a triple by Alex Newman, and Allen Messenger’s bloop single. The next inning Tim Palo started with a single followed by Kory Rosenberg’s double then finished off by Skyler Newman’s sac fly. The Hounds just couldn’t keep up with Northwest Corridor’s hitting today.
