Week 12:  June 19, 2005

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Kings 14 (WP-Chuck Grant 7-5)  NEK Entertainment 7 (LP-David Pridgen 6-5)

The game started off poorly for the Kings. Kings RF Chris Monaco made a crucial rookie mistake and left the team water cooler at home. NEK took advantage of the Kings downer mood with 4 singles to start the t-1st. 2 RBI singles by Jason Gardner and Pete Griffin accounting for 3 of the 4 runs. The Kings drew 4 walks in b-1st off NEK starter and captain David Pridgen. 2 out RBI single by Dan Frignito, RBI walk to Scott Katzen, and 2 RBI single by Keegan Retalliata tied score 4-4. NEK again took lead in t-2nd on a 3-run HR blast by Marcus. Kings pushed across 1 run in b-2nd on Dave Sandler's RBI single and 2 more runs in b-3rd to again tie score, 7-7. While Kings starter Chuck Grant was able to shut down the NEK bats through the final 5 innings, Kings took the lead for good with 6 run rally in b-4th. The key blast was a bases loaded HR by Grant. Kings solidified lead in b-6th when Frignito started the inning with a single and later scored on a SF by Scott Katzen.

Kings multi-hit hitters for game 1 were Dave Sandler (2-3,2 R,2 RBI,W), Shilo Merwitz (2-4,1 R), Dan Frignito (3-4,3 R,1 RBI), Chuck Grant (2-2,2 R,4 RBI,HR,2 W), and Keegan Retalliata (3-4,3 RBI,2B). Jason Gardner(2-4,1 R) was the only NEK batter with 2 or more hits, as Grant allowed just 10 hits in 32 NEK at-bats (.313 average).

Game 2:  Kings 13 (WP-Dan Frignito 1-1)  NEK Entertainment 7 (LP-David Pridgen 6-6)

Dan Frignito made just his 3rd pitching start for the Kings, but he was very sharp and effective in allowing just 8 hits, while striking out 3 in the Kings 13-7 game 2 victory. The Kings featured a balanced offense scoring in 6 different innings while achieving 22 hits in 40 at-bats(.550 average). 8 of the Kings batters had 2 or more hits, while 8 batters also had at least 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Shilo Merwitz played stellar defense at shortstop in both ends of the doubleheader for the Kings. The Kings played errorless ball and also turned a key 1st and 3rd base groundout doubleplay.

Kings offensive stars were Dave Sandler (2-4,2 RBI), Shilo Merwitz (2-3,1 R,3 RBI,HR,SF), Dan Frignito (2-3,1 R,3B,W), Alan Varhaftik (2-4,2 R,2B), Scott Katzen (2-4,2 R,1 RBI), Keegan Retalliata (4-4,3 R,1 RBI), Chris Monaco (2-3,1 R,2 RBI,SF), and Mike Herr (3-3,1 R,1 RBI,SF).

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1: Quizno's Owings Mills 12 (WP-Lane Gordon 4-0)  Sky & Sky Inc 7 (LP-Larry Newman 7-8)

Quizno's jumped out to an early 2-run lead, but a throwing error and Brian Sky 3B allowed Sky & Sky to answer with 2 of their own. The mental edge seemed to need some sharpening for Sky & Sky in the t-2nd. A series of lapses in judgment and timely hitting saw Quizno's add 6 more that inning. The teams traded runs until the end of the game with the final 12-7 as Lane Gordon beat Larry Newman. Brian Sky added a 2B to his 3B going 2-3 while Todd Tennenbaum went 2-3(3B,1B).

Lee Eidelberg and Andrew Rosenstein each drove in 4 runs to lead Quizno's Owings Mills to victory over Sky & Sky by the score of 12-7. Tolli and Russ Dlin each added a pair of hits in the victory. Lane Gordon pitched splendidly allowing only 4 earned runs over the first 6 innings. Tolli also displayed his best Brooks Robinson impersonation by recording a season high 7 outs at 3rd base without an error. For the 3rd straight week-Joel Koman injured himself before breaking a sweat- popping a calf muscle on fly ball in the 1st inning. Koman now leads the league in injuries and has been placed on the 15-day DL after finishing his at-bat in his docksiders in the first inning.

Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc 7 (WP-Chris Knorr 1-0)  Quizno's Owings Mills 3 (LP-Lane Gordon 4-1)

Game 2 featured an experiment from Sky & Sky with Chris Knorr making his first start of the season. A combination of stellar defense and spot pitching
allowed him to cruise through 3 innings. Sky & Sky gave Knorr a few runs of support through 4 innings, but Quizno's got them all back in the b-4th. Manufacturing one in the t-5th gave Knorr a razor thin margin. Then with 2 out in the t-6th, 4 hits and walk allowed Sky & Sky regain their 3-run advantage. The final was 7-3 Knorr over Gordon. Andy Bloom led the attack going 2-2(2B,1B,BB)+ 2-rbi while Eric Gertner (2-4),2-rbi, and Alan Friedman 2-2,BB also contributed.

For the second straight week- Quizno's OM laid an egg in Game number 2 by scoring only 3 runs in a 7-3 defeat. Andrew Rosenstein continued to scorch the ball and was the only player with more than one hit in Game 2 for the Blue Wave. Mark Rosenstein drove in 2 of the team's 3 runs in the 3 run 4th inning.
