Game 1: Quizno's Owings Mills 17 (WP-Lane Gordon)
Hounds 2 (LP-Alex Newman ) 5 Innings
Quizno's Owings Mills scored 7 runs in the 5th inning
thanks to a bases-clearing Double by Larry Henderson to win by slaughter rule in
5 innings by the score of 15-3. For the 2nd straight week- every starter crossed
the plate for the Blue Wave. Lane Gordon won for the 6th straight start-- but
continues to contemplate retirement. Gordon- who is working out with a personal
trainer on a weekly basis to avoid retirement- has not given up more than 5
earned runs in his last 5 starts. Lee Eidelberg, Andrew Rosenstein, and brother
Mark Rosenstein each walked and went a perfect 2-2 in the game. Russ Dlin and
Larry Henderson each added 3 RBI's and Todd Pobleets and Craig Dlin each drove
in 2 Runs apiece.
Game 2:
Quizno's Owings Mills 21 (WP-Jeff Harris) Hounds 2 (LP-Alex Newman ) 4 Innings
Quizno's Owings Mills won for the 5th time in 6 games by
defeating the Hop-less Hounds 21-2 in 4 Innings. Jeff Harris picked up the win
allowing only 4 hits in game #2. After the scored was 2-2 after the 1st inning-
Quizno's pounded out 19 runs over the next 3 innings to put this one away.
Robbie Ressin burned a lot of calories in this game by scoring 4 times and
walking 3 times. Russ Dlin, Tali Lemus, and Jeff Harris all crossed the plate 3
times each.
Notes on Quizno's Owings Mills:
Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 3 (WP-Mark Yokel) Kings 1 (LP-Chuck Grant )
Superb pitching by Cannons Mark Yokel and Kings Chuck Grant was accompanied by outstanding defense by the 2 squads, with the Cannons coming away victors 3-1. An RBI single by Neal Charkatz and an RBI groundout by Mark Yokel gave Cannons 2-1 lead in t-2nd. Dave Sandler singled to start Kings b-4th and later scored on Chuck Grant's RBI single, but that was the only run that the Kings could push across the plate. The Cannons added an insurance run in t-6th when Chuck Easter led off with a single and scored on Mike Steller's following RBI 2B. Both high-flying offenses were stymied by the great pitching and defense as the Kings went 6-for-28 (.214) against Yokel, while the Cannons went 9-for-29 (.310) against Grant. The Kings defense turned 3 doubleplays on ground-balls, and surprisingly against such speedsters as Jeff Kurland, Dan Kassel, and Neal Charkatz.
The only multi-hit players from the Cannons were Chuck
Easter (2-3,1 R) and Mike Steller (2-3,1 RBI,2B). The only multi-hit Kings
players were Dave Sandler (2-3,1 R) and Chuck Grant (2-3,1 RBI,2B).
Game 2: Kings 5 (WP-Chuck Grant )
Havana Club Cannons 4 (LP-Tom Paulshock)
Both teams went with different pitchers for game 2, but the game style remained dominated by the superior pitching and quality defense. The Cannons Tom Paulshock held Kings batters to 12-for-34 (.353) with just 4 walks, while the Kings Dan Frignito limited the Cannons to 11-for-31 (.355) with only 2 walks. The Kings scored a run in t-1st on a rare Mike Steller 2 out error. Cannons got even in b-2nd with Lou Falcon single, Steve Hayes walk, and Neal Charkatz RBI single. In b-3rd with 2 outs and none on, Shilo Merwitz singled and Dan Frignito tripled. Cannons would again tie score in b-5th with Brad Bondroff hitting a leadoff single, pinch-hitter Dan Kassel singling Bondroff to thirdbase, and Bondroff scoring on a Jeff Kurland RBI groundout. Kings Keegan Retalliata tripled to start t-6th and Jan Katzen hit a sacrifice fly to put Kings back ahead 3-2. The lead was short-lived as Neal Charkatz plated 2 runners in b-6th, giving Cannons 4-3 lead headed to the 7th inning. With 2 outs and Mike Frignito on firstbase as a result of a 1 out walk, Shilo Merwitz and Dan Frignito singled to tie the score. Keegan Retalliata followed Dan Frignito with an RBI single putting the Kings ahead once more 5-4. Frignito was able to escape the b-7th with just a Mike Steller 2 out 1B, giving the Kings the nightcap win and a split on the day.
Again in game 2, multi-hit players were limited. For the Cannons, Jeff Kurland (2-4,1 RBI), Lou Falcon (3-3,2 R), and Neal Charkatz (2-3,3 RBI). For the Kings 3-4-5 batters Shilo Merwitz (2-4,3 R), Dan Frignito (3-4,3B,2 RBI), and Keegan Retalliata (2-4,3B,1 R,1 RBI) cluttered their hits, with Kenny Salzman (2-3) also coming thru offensively. Catcher Retalliata also made an outstanding defensive play tagging out Jeff Kurland on a sacrifice fly attempt in b-3rd as Mike Frignito's throw towards the plate sailed, but Retalliata came down with the tag on the speedy Kurland. Retalliata also hit his 7th triple of the season, tying the Kings record of Rob Gould from the 1990 season.
Leg injuries to Kings Chuck Grant & Dave Sandler and Cannons Dan Kassel kept these players out for most of game 2. The Kings had 13 players dressed for the first time all season. Grant is listed as out for next week, while Sandler is said to be questionable.
Northwest Regional Park Field 4:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc 10 (WP-Larry Newman) Northwest Corridor 9
(LP-Howard Goldberg )
10 Innings
Down 1 player at the start of the day Northwest Corridor
outfielders put in some extra miles running around in the OF for 10 innings in
an obviously overheated affair. Sky & Sky's Andy Bloom hit a solo shot in the
1st while a couple of walks allowed a second run to cross in the 2nd. Then
Northwest Corridor broke out the 'singles' bats mixing Texas leaguers with line
drives to go ahead by 5 in a half inning which seemed to go on forever. Run
swapping went on for the next 2.5 innings. Ahead by 2 runs in the b-7th, a key
NWC error took away a golden chance for a double play and Sky & Sky made those
runs count knotting things at 9. Then each team wasted several chances until
Paul Hayes went shopping at the gap with a triple which rolled to the fence.
Wayne Craig promptly singled to the fence in LF to put both hot and tired teams
out of their misery and into the shade. Steve Truitt, feeling the effects of the
heat and his impending marriage next week, turned in a 3-4,BB,2 run performance.
Andy Bloom was 3-5 needing a triple to complete the cycle and scoring 3 times.
Mark Hampt carried the heavy lumber today going 4-5(2 2B & 2 1B), had 4 RBI, but
never managed to score despite reaching 1B in all 5 plate appearances. Other
notables were Mark Weinapple 2-3,BB and Alan Friedman 3-3,BB, 2 RBI.
During the extra frames, 3B Donny Weinapple was overcome by the heat and helped
to the gazebo area. Quizno's players Dr. Andrew Rosenstein and Dr. Jon Koman
immediately came over to lend their expertise and aided Weinapple until an
ambulance arrived. He was taken for precautionary measures to Northwest Hospital
and released in the mid afternoon. Feeling much better and resting comfortably
at home...We all wish him well!!!
As we all know, walks will kill you...and Brian Weiss' single which skated to
the fence following 3 walks epitomized that saying. Being down 5 runs before
even batting on a scorching day will take the wind out of anyone's sails. Both
teams played uninspired ball from that point on with the final 10-2 Newman over
Matt Bell. Steve--I don't come out here to walk!-- Truitt singled, scored 2 runs
and walked 2 more times. Andy Bloom continued to slumpbust adding 2 doubles,
BB,& 2 runs, while Wayne Craig contributed 2 more hits(2-3) and an RBI.
Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc 10 (WP-Larry Newman) Northwest
Corridor 2 (LP-Matt Bell 0-1 )
Highlights pending.
