2005 PMS at Northwest Regional Park
Week 18:  July 31, 2005

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1:
Northwest Corridor 13 (WP-David Stein)  Hounds 5 (LP-Alex Newman)

Things started off slowly as NWC and The hounds couldn't score in the 1st inning. The Hounds had the bases loaded but were shut out of the inning by Stein. The NWC got things rolling in the top of the 2nd scoring 6 runs. A couple bases loaded walks and rbi singles by Stein and Gabe Unterman gave NWC the momentum they needed. Things got scary in the bottom of the second when Stein took a comebacker to the jaw off of the bat of Sky. He laid on the ground for about 15 seconds before he got up in typical Stein fashion, told everyone to F-OFF "I'm Fine, Let's play ball"!!! He would continue to wear a bulls eye for the rest of the day getting hit 4 more times. NWC would continue to pile on singles and walks taking a 13-5 game 1 victory. Stein ended the game with a 3 run homer and triple to go along with his mangled jaw and win. LeePollak and Joey Liner also produced long triples in the game as NWC's slumping bats finally woke up.

Game 2:
Northwest Corridor 18 (WP-Howard Goldberg)  Hounds 1 (LP-Rich Schneider)  4 Innings

NWC started game 2 where they left off in game 1 pushing 5 runs across in the bottom of the 1st. Tony Esposito and Billy Beadle both had key rbi singles. The Hounds bats which were starting to show some life were quickly silenced by Goldberg. The Hounds 6 singles and 3 walks were enough to score just 1 unearned run. Meanwhile, the NWC continued to play great defense and pile on the runs. A 9 run 2nd inning put the game out of reach. The NWC bats totaled 5 extra base hits in the inning led by triples from Scott Sweren, Joey Liner and Lee Pollak.

NWC Hitting Stars and Game Notes For the Doubleheader:
Joey Liner 3-3 3BB 5r 3B HR 5rbi

>Goldberg evened his record at 5-5 becoming the first NWC pitcher in franchise history to not finish with a losing record.
>Eric Szpear played in 2 games to achieve playoff eligibility only to tell the team afterward he wouldn't play next week "So he doesn't hurt the team"
>A few 4 year franchise marks were attained this year. Joey Liner, Howard Goldberg and David Stein all broke the 100 hits and 100 runs scored milestones. Goldberg also broke the 100 rbi barrier.
>The NWC achieved franchise bests in team wins with 9 and other offensive categories.
> ESB next week!!!! BRING IT!!!!!!!

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1:
Sky & Sky Inc. 9 (WP-Larry Newman) NEK Entertainment 5  (LP-David Pridgen)

Sky ans Sky jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning. errors seem to be the thing that kept NEK down from the start of the game. NEK would battle back to within on run making the score 5-4 but would get no closer than that with Sky and Sky adding on to make the final score 9-5.

Game 2:
NEK Entertainment 5 (WP-Marqui Garrett )  Sky & Sky Inc. 4 (LP-Larry Newman)

This was a close game with Sky and Sky ahead 2-1 until a four run inning by NEK, with NEK ahead 5-4, the opponent would come as close as 5-4 but the defense of NEK would hold on to the lead to split the doubleheader. The defense was lead by the dynamic middle of the infield of Stephen Georgie and Rashaad Johnson the duo made great play after great play not letting anything get through the middle. I think Sportscenter will spotlight them as hidden gems.

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1:
Kings 13 (WP-Chuck Grant )  Quizno's Owings Mills 2 (LP-Jeff Harris )

The Kings turned in another solid effort in their doubleheader sweep against Quizno's Owings Mills. The Kings took the opener 13-2 behind the strong pitching of Chuck Grant and a balanced offensive attack. The Kings led 7-0 after 1 1/2 innings and 13-2 after 3 1/2 innings, coasting to the win.

10 of the Kings 11 starters had hits. Six different Kings players had multi-hits: Dave Sandler (3-4,1 R,1 RBI), Shilo Merwitz (2-4,2 R,1 RBI), Chuck Grant (2-3,2 R,2 RBI,W), Alan Varhaftik (2-4,1 R,4 RBI), Scott Katzen (2-3,2 RBI), and Mike Herr (2-3,2 R,1 RBI). The only multi-hit player from Quizno's was Andrew Rosenstein (3-3,1 R). Quizno's Rob Ressin drew 3 walks-- the only 3 walks that Grant allowed.

Game 2:
Kings 10 (WP-Chuck Grant )  Quizno's Owings Mills 3 (LP-Jeff Harris )

Game 2 was meaningless for the Kings in regards to the standings, as the Cannons win in game 1 against ESB ended the Kings possibility of moving into 2nd place. Nevertheless, the Kings decided to play their 'A team' with Chuck Grant again pitching for the Kings against Jeff Harris for Quizno's. Grant once more pitched quite well and he was supported with outstanding errorless defense.

Harris was more effective than in game 1, but the Kings bats remained potent in pounding out 11 hits and scoring 10 runs in the game 2 10-3 Kings win. Dave Sandler (2-4,2 R,1 RBI) and Shilo Merwitz (2-4,2 R,2 RBI) both had another multi-hit game. Additionally Keegan Rettaliata (2-4,2 R,4 RBI) and Jan Katzen (2-3,1 RBI) also contributed multi-hit games. Lee Eidleberg (2-3,1 R,2B) and Rob Ressin (2-3,1 R) were the lone Quizno's players with multi-hits.

The Kings closed out the Regular Season with 5 straight wins and hope to repeat their 1996 Championship Season when they also won their last 5 Regular Season games before sweeping through the Playoffs 5-0, capped by a Finals win against Palmgard. 5 Kings players remain from that 1996 Championship team-- Dave Sandler, Chuck Grant, Alan Varhaftik, Kenny Salzman, and Mike Herr.

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:
Game 1:
Havana Club Cannons 9 (WP-Mark Yokel 9-3) Eastern Savings Bank 4 (LP-Ted Winner )

IN the showdown for the regular season championship the Cannons didn't have any trouble getting the bats started early. The Cannons plated 2 runs in the 1st and 2nd innings taking a 4-1 lead that was never close to relinquished.

Hitting stars for the Cannons were:
Jeff Kurland 2-3 2 runs scored 1 rbi
Mike Ginsberg 2-3 3 runs scored
Mike Steller 3-4 4 rbis
Mark Yokel 2-2, 2 runs scored

Game 2:
Havana Club Cannons 6 (WP-Tom Paulshock 7-2) Eastern Savings Bank 2 (LP-Larry Hineline)

With Eastern needing a 14 run victory to claim the regular season title through the tie breaker, runs were needed in bunches. The game ended up a pitchers dual between Larry Heinline/ Teddy Winner and Tommy Paulshock. Several clutch running catches in the outfield and solid defense around keyed the Cannons to the Regular Season title.

Hitting Stars for the Cannons:
Jeff Kurland 2-4 2 runs scored 1 rbi
Mike Steller 4-4 1 rbi
Neal Charkatz 3-3 2 runs scored
Chris Fiora 2-3 1 rbi

Congratulations to the Havana Club Cannons on their victories today, and repeating regular season champions. Back to back in 2004 and 2005.
