Week 2:
April 10, 2005
Field 1:
Game 1: Kings 12 (WP-Chuck Grant 1-0) Quizno's 6 (LP-Jeff
Harris 0-1)
Detour Dave Sandler's return to the Kings was a success for both Sandler and the Kings in a 12-6 opening day win over rival Quizno's Owings Mills. Sandler went 4-for-4 (3R,1 RBI,2B) for his first 4 hit game, coincidentally, since opening day 1995 against Gerry Edelman and the Black Sox. On April 2, 1995 game 1 at Pikesville Middle School, Sandler (4-4,4 R,3 RBI,2B) led the Kings to a 14-1 (5 Innings) win with hits coming against starting pitcher Tom Paulshock and reliever Ted Winner.
Quizno's Owings Mills was without the services of Joel
Koman who retired a la Ricky Williams style and without the services of the MASH
unit that features Tony Luna (ankle), Craig Dlin (Shoulder), Andrew Rosenstien
(Elbow among other things), Bobby Morrow (??), Russ Seamster (slipped disk
back-done for the year), and Mark Rosenstein- Quizno's played with only 9
players.
In today's game against Quizno's, Kings scored in b-1st on a Shilo Merwitz RBI
single and a 3-run homerun by Kings starting pitcher Chuck Grant. Grant was
sailing along to a 11-0 lead after 4 innings, with Quizno's unable to get a
runner as far as second base. In the 5th inning- Quizno's Robbie Ressin started a rally with a quick
2-out single. Larry Henderson and Scott followed with back-to-back infield singles to
load the bases. Russ Dlin promptly blooped a ground-ruled 2B down the right field line to get
the Blue Wave on the board. Jon Koman blooped a flyball that was dropped,
scoring 2 more runs, sparking a
4-run rally. Quizno's added 1 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th but was not enough as
the Kings rolled by the final of 12-6.
Despite a 15 hit attack by the Kings, other than Sandler, the only other Kings with multi-hits were Dan Frignito (3-4,1 R,1 RBI,2 2B) and Kenny Salzman (2-2,1 R,3B,W). Multi-hit Quizno's players were Russ Dlin (3-4,2 R,2 RBI,2 2B) and pitcher Jeff Harris (3-4,1 RBI).
Game 2: Kings 10 (WP-Chuck Grant 2-0)
Quizno's 7 (LP-Jeff
Harris 0-2)
The Kings trailed most of game 2, but Alan Varhaftik
(1-3,1 R,4 RBI,HR) hit a 2-out 3-run homerun in b-5th to tie score 7-7 and Troy
Hendricks (2-4,2 R,3 RBI,HR) hit a 3-run walkoff HR in b-7th to give the Kings a
10-7 come from behind victory over Quizno's. The Kings failed to capitalize on a
3-man Quizno's outfield as 6 RBI's were the result of balls leaving the park.
Quizno's took advantage of early wildness from Kings starter Dan Frignito.
Loading the bases in t-1st on walks, with 2 outs, an infield error was followed
by RBI hits
off the bats of Jon Koman (2 RBI) and Dave Doy (1 RBI), giving Quizno's 4-0 lead. Frignito
(2-3,1 R,2 RBI,2B) hit an RBI 2B in b-1st as Kings scored 2 runs in their half
of the inning. Shilo Merwitz's RBI 2B in b-3rd pulled Kings within
4-3, but Quizno's
extended their lead in b-4th on RBI 3B by Scott Snyder and RBI 1B by Russ Dlin.
Another run in t-5th gave Quizno's 7-3 lead entering b-5th. Frignito hit a RBI
single making the score 7-4 before Varhaftik hit his line-drive HR over the
leftfield fence. The Kings b-7th rally was started on a leg 2B by rookie Mike
Frignito (1-3,1 R,2B). Quizno's elected to intentionally walk Chuck Grant to get
to Troy Hendricks,
but Hendricks launched a 3-run HR down the leftfield line.
Chuck Grant was the Kings winning pitcher in relief of Dan Frignito, while Jeff Harris took the loss for Quizno's. With the loss of Lane Gordon to ESB, Harris will be getting a huge amount of mound work this season.
Newly acquired Mark Summerfield was 2-2 with 2 runs scored
for Quizno's Owings Mills
Notes on Quizno's:
- Team went 12-33 in the first game. Russ Dlin and Jeff Harris combined: 6-8
(.750). Rest of team: 6-25 (.240)
- Quizno's walked 7 Times in game two.......5 of them scored.
- Jeff Harris has lost 4 straight decisions to the Kings.
Field 2:
Game 1: Eastern Savings Bank 16 (WP-Ted Winner 1-0)
Hounds 0 (LP-Brad Starobin 0-1) 4 Innings
On a beautiful Sunday morning ESB wasted no time jumping
on a talented Hounds team. ESB chose to hit first in game 1 and wasted no time
jumping out to a 6-0 lead. Alan Lazerow and Ben Gutman started things off with
back to back singles.1b Jason Schwartzberg showing no ill effects of being
engaged followed with a run scoring double. Jimmy (balco) Davis then went deep
with a titanic shot over the fence for a quick 4-0 lead. ESB wasn't through.
With one man out and one on, new superstar shortstop Cap Plokemba hit a shot
over the left field fence in his first at bat on the first pitch he saw in this
talented league. ESB then combined great pitching from Ted(I don't throw batting
practice) Winner and sharp defense for a decisive 16-0 victory that ended after
4 innings. Manager David Finkelstein pitched the 4th to secure his first hold of
the season.
ESB Hitting stars game 1:
Lazerow 2-2 and a walk 2 runs scored
Gutman 2-3,2 runs scored
Schwatzberg 2-3,2 doubles
Davis- Home Run,2 rbi's
Cap Plokemba- Home Run,2rbi's
Game 2:
Eastern Savings Bank 15 (WP-Larry Heinline 1-0)
Hounds 1 (LP-Brad Starobin 0-2) 5 Innings
Game 2 was a lot like game one. ESB got a strong pitched
game from veteran Larry Hineline, powerful hitting and stout defense for a 15-1
victory. This game also ended early(5 innings) Lazerow started the first inning
with a single and after one out Schwartzberg went deep clearing the fence for a
2-0 lead. 4 more runs crossed the plate in the 2nd. Gabe Silber started things
off with a double. Aaron Shifren followed with an rbi single. Cap hit a double
and 2nd baseman Chris Zoeller ( also getting married) hit a 2 run single. New
addition, star 3rd base -catcher Mark Rothermel followed with an rbi double. ESB
put the game away in the third by scoring 6 more runs. Jason led off with a
single followed by a double by Jim Davis. Silber hit a sac fly. Shifren
drove in another run with a single and then Cap followed with his 2nd home run
of the day. Zoeller hit a single and then Rothermel hit a double. Pitcher
Hineline drove both of them home with a 2 run single. By the end of the day ESB
had swept the double header and was tied for 1st place going into next week's
game against the Cannons. We hopefully will be ready no matter who shows up for
them.
ESB Hitting stars game 2:
Zoeller 3-3, 2 rbi's, 3 runs scored
Lazerow (believe it or not also getting married) 3-3, a walk, 2 runs scored
Field 3:
Game 1: Northwest Corridor 14 (WP-Dave Stein 1-0)
Sky & Sky Inc. 11 (LP-Larry Newman 0-1)
Both teams showed serious winter rust, as Sky and Sky was spotted a four run lead only to see it evaporate with the help of five first inning errors. The teams then traded runs and were knotted at ten until a costly bases loaded blooper allowed Northwest Corridor to go up by four. Northwest Corridor then closed the door as they came out victorious in the first game 14 to 11. Both teams seemed to sorely lack any pretense of defense, as the vast majority of the 26 runs were unearned. David Stein over Larry Newman.
Sky & Sky started the new season off well getting out to
an early 4-0 lead after a Scott Felton blast over the fence. NWC not discouraged
from the 4run hole put 5 of their own runs across in the bottom of the first.
NWC broke open a 5-5 tie in the 3rd inning with a Billy Beadle triple, Matt Bell
single, Eric Wingrat double and a Scott landsman 2rbi base knock. Sky&Sky kept
the game close scoring 3 in the 5th and 1 run in the 6th and 7th. It wasn't
enough as the NWC closed the game up with a 4run 6th led by Tony Esposito's 2run
single. NWC played great defense and had a true whole team effort to gain their
first win of the new season 14-11.
NWC Hitting Stars:
Howard Goldberg 3-4 2rbi 2r 3b
Billy Beadle 4-4 2r 2rbi 3b
Jake Zellweger 2-3 2rbi 2b r
Scott Landsman 2-3 2rbi r
Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc. 16 (WP-Larry Newman 1-1)
Northwest Corridor 11 (LP-Howard Goldberg 0-1)
Game two saw a much different story as Sky and Sky employed a smattering of hits and numerous walks to jump out to a 13-0 lead. Northwest Corridor, to their credit, then took advantage of poor defense to claw their way back in. The final round up 16-10 as Newman got his first win of the year over Howard Goldberg.
Sky & Sky came out pissed and determined to come out
strong in game 2. A couple walks 3 singles and a Chris Knorr triple put Sky&Sky
ahead 7-0 after 1inn. Sky added 2 more in the 2nd and 4 more runs in the 3rd. It
looked like a laugher but NWC refused to give up. NWC finally got onto the
scoreboard in the 4th after RBI doubles from Jake Zellweger and Billy Beadle.
Eric Wingrat topped off the inning with an inside the park homer. NWC picked up
where they left off in the 5th making it a close ballgame with 5 more runs
scored. It wasn't enough as Sky&Sky added some insurance runs for a 16-10
victory and a split on the day.
NWC Hitting Stars:
David Stein 3-4 2r 2b
Terry Lanciotti 2-3 r
Billy Beadle 2-4 4rbi 2r hr 2b
Sky & Sky says-- "Northwest Corridor is a
much improved team over last year's squad so be prepared to bring your "A" game
to the field.".
Field 4:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 16 (WP-Mark Yokel 1-0)
NEK Entertainment 4 (LP-David Pridgen 0-1) 6 Innings
The Cannons started off their regular season title defense
with an offensive barrage in game 1, scoring in all 6 innings played. After a
shaky 1st inning Mark Yokel (1-0) settled in, and only surrendered 1 run in his
last 5 innings pitched. Homeruns were hit by Jeff Kurland, Chuck Easter, and the
rookie Colin "tiny" in his second AB of his career. Steve Hayes and Mark Yokel
each scored 3 runs. Once again Head Mid-Atlantic Scout Chuck Easter comes
through with a gem of a find in Colin "tiny", as Colin made a great sliding
catch in right field foul territory to help preserve Yokel's well pitched game.
Game 2: Havana Club Cannons 10 (WP-Tom Paulshock 1-0)
NEK Entertainment 3 (LP-David Pridgen 0-2)
Game two featured Tommy Paulshock on the mound, and in the top of the first NEK
hitter Neal hit a screaming line drive 3 run homerun to right field. Tommy
settled in nicely after that though, striking out 4 batters, and not allowing a
another run to plate the rest of the game for NEK. Chuck Easter hit another
homerun, and Mike Steller also parked one deep. Steve Hayes hit one off the foul
pole in left field for a game tying 2 run shot in the second, and the Cannons
never looked back. Again, the Cannons scored in every inning of the game, never
letting up on NEK.
