2005 PMS at Northwest Regional Park
Week 6:  May 8, 2005

Field 1:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 16 (WP-Mark Yokel 3-0)  Northwest Corridor 4 (LP-Dave Stein 1-2) 5 Innings

The Cannons cruised behind Yokel. Playing with only 9 fielders the Corridor could not find the gaps, and some fantastic defense lead to a 16-4 five inning victory. The wind played havoc with fly balls today, leading to many misjudged pop ups.

Game 2: Havana Club Cannons 16 (WP-Tom Paulshock 2-1)  Northwest Corridor 5 (LP-Terry Lanciotti 0-1)

Game 2 started off with fireworks, and the Corridor got 5 runs in the top of the first inning. The Cannons roared back in the bottom with the first 5 batters getting on base and scoring. The Cannons batted around in the first and second innings, posting another 5 spot in the second, when again 1-5 hitters Kurland, Easter, Kreitzer, Steller, Falcon all reached base and scored.

Game 1 and 2 hitting stars:

Field 2:
Game 1: NEK Entertainment 17 (WP-David Pridgen 3-2)  Kings 15 (LP-Chuck Grant 2-1)

NEK overcame a 9-0 t-1st inning deficit and won the opener 17-15. The game was sloppily played for both teams with dropped fly balls and win blown pop-ups commonplace. David Pridgen survived the 1st inning Kings and pitched well thru the final 6 innings. Both teams started the game with 9 players, but had 10th players arrive before the game was finished.

Game 2: Kings 19 (WP-Chuck Grant 3-1)  NEK Entertainment 18 (LP-Marquis Garret 0-1)

Keegan Retalliata's (3-5,3 R,3 RBI,3B,HR) 2 out 3B scored Chris Monaco in the bottom of the 7th to give the Kings a wild 19-18 win in game 2. The Kings blew a 3 run lead in the top half of the inning, with the latter 2 runs scoring on a David Pridgen 2 out 2B. The Kings continued their game 1 tailspin in the nightcap, getting behind 10-3 after 3 1/2 innings, but a 5 run b-4th and 8 run b-5th showed that the Kings would simply not lay down.

Other game 2 hitting stars for the Kings were Kenny Salzman (3-3,3 R,2 RBI,2W), Dave Sandler (4-5,1 R), Mike Frignito (3-4,3 R), and Chris Blankenship (2-3,2 R,2 2B,4 RBI).

Field 3:
Game 1: Quizno's Owings Mills 16 (WP-Lane Gordon 1-0, Save-Jeff Harris 1)  Eastern Savings Bank 6 (LP-Ted Winner 1-2)

Quizno's Owings Mills put together a 9 run 5th inning to break open a close game and went on to win by the final score of 16-6. Lane Gordon- coming out of retirement- picked up his first win of the season going 5 strong innings. Jeff Harris came on late in the game to record his 1st save in nearly 5 years. Mark Summerfield lead the way going 4-4 with a pair of RBI's. Quizno's got off to a quick start scoring 3 in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Larry Henderson and a bases loaded 2-RBI Double by Russ Dlin. With the score close going into the 5th- Quizno's sent 15 men to the plate and tallied 9 runs as Scott Snyder picked up 2 hits and 2 RBI in the same inning. The Blue Wave added 4 insurance runs in the 7th inning as Jeff Harris, Robbie Resin, Larry Henderson and Scott Snyder all crossed the plate to insure the victory.

It is amazing to ESB that every time we play Quiznos some type of argument or dispute breaks out. It’s a shame that such a talented team constantly detracts from the fun of a Sunday softball doubleheader by always having to stir things up. I’m sure that most of the Quiznos players don’t enjoy this detraction from some good softball. In game one Quiznos jumped on top for a quick 3-0 lead thanks to some shoddy defense by ESB. Lane Gordon pitching for the first time this season (he was traded the Friday before the game for some cash and donuts) pitched a great game for Quiznos keeping them ahead for most of the game. ESB took their first lead of the game in the fourth, 5-4. However, Ted Winner could not hold the lead. Quiznos powerful lineup started pounding the ball and ESB was pretty inept on defense for a final score of 16-6.

ESB Hitting stars: Ben Gutman 3-4, Jason Schwartzberg 2-4, Sam Luxenberg 2-3 and 2 runs scored, Aaron Shifren 3-3 with a home run and 2 RBI’s.

Game 2: Eastern Savings Bank 17  (WP-Larry Hineline 3-0)  Quizno's Owings Mills 9 (LP-Jeff Harris 1-4)

In the most controversial game of the season- all hell broke loose in the 3rd inning on Field 3. With 2 outs and the score 7-5 ESB- ESB had a "Slingshot Pitcher" on the mound disguised as former Pittsburgh Pirates closer Kent Tekulve. Quizno's Craig Dlin stepped up to the plate and ripped a line drive right up the middle in front of Quizno's Jon Koman who was standing on 2nd base. As Koman ran to 3rd- the Umpire ruled that the line drive hit Koman and called him out- ending the rally and the inning. To the amazement of both teams- the umpire said that he "heard something" thru the 40 mile per hour wind and had to call Koman out. In honor of Mother's Day- several Quizno's players showed their gratitude of the call by using the word "Mother" in a different context. Instead of the score being 7-6-- the inning ended and the score stayed 7-4 ESB. As the game went on and Kent Tekulve continued pitching illegally- Quizno''s could only muster up 5 more runs after the 3rd inning and went on to lose by the score of 17-9. Scott Snyder led the way going 4-4 with 3 1B's and a 3B. Andrew Rosenstein notched his 1st HR of the season and Todd Pobleets added 3 hits of his own in the loss.

In game two ESB pounded out a 17-9 victory behind ace Larry Hineline. ESB scored 2 in the first, 5 in the second, 5 in the fourth, 1 in the fifth and 4 in the sixth. Quiznos never really challenged ESB and their star pitcher Tekulve, I mean Hineline. (anyway we consider him more like Bob Gibson) .

ESB Hitting strars for game two: Aaron Shifren who accomplished a rarity by hitting for the cycle, Mark Rothermill had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s, Ben Gutman scored 3 runs, Jason had 2 hits and 2 runs scored, Glen Ackman had 2 RBI’s, Cap Plokemba had 2 hits including a triple and 2 runs scored, Jonny Feldman had 2 hits and several outstanding defense plays. Bob Gibson had 2 hits and a run scored and Gabe Silber came off the bench with a key lead off scorching single that basically ended Quiznos day.

Quizno's Game Notes:

Field 4:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 32 (WP-Larry Newman 3-2)  Hounds 12 (LP-Brandon Raffel 0-1) 4 Innings

Mother nature had a barrel of laughs today as did both teams watching each other try to play defense. A comedy of errors saw 84 runs scored by both teams, and 3.5 times as many errors as innings. Texas leaguers, infield hits and heavy winds rained down as everyone seemed to be disjointed on defense. Both games ended after 4 innings, 32-12 and 32-8, with Newman picking up both wins. Brandon Raffel and Rich Schneider took the losses respectively for the Hounds.

Game 2:  Sky & Sky Inc. 32 (WP-Larry Newman 4-2)  Hounds 8 (LP-Rich Schneider 0-2) 4 Innings

Of particular note was Sky & Sky's order, which batted around in each of its 7 opportunities. Everyone seems liked an offensive star on a day like this. Worth mentioning was Mike Rottenberg who scored 6 runs & reached safely in each of his 8 plate appearances.
