2005 PMS at Northwest Regional Park
Week 7:  May 15, 2005

Field 1:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 12 (WP-Mark Yokel 4-0)  Sky & Sky Inc 8 (LP-Larry Newman 4-3)

Despite having only 9 players, the Cannons' defense seemed to have a lot of fly balls find their gloves in the OF in the t-1st. However, Sky & Sky struck for 5 in the t-2nd, while Newman kept the Cannons' bats relatively quiet. Speed and timely hitting allowed the Cannons to chip away at the lead with two RBI singles from Chuck Easter and Lou Falcon. Same story in the b-3rd as the Cannons closed the gap to 1. Meanwhile Yokel was scattering hits over the middle 3 innings, but his defense allowed only run to score. Shawn tripled in 2 and scored on a sac fly to push the Cannons ahead by 1. They played small ball in the 6th to add 5 insurance runs in the b-6th which proved vital as Sky & Sky could only add 2 in the t-7th. Final was 12-8 as Yokel's defense lifted him to a victory over Newman.

Game 1 Saw the Cannons once again begin with only 9 players. It took a while for the bats to get going but once they did big results followed. Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the 5th the Cannon took the lead for good on a Mike Stellar BB, a lou Falcon 2b and newcomer Sean finished the rally off with his first triple of the season. The cannons plated 5 more in the bottom of the 6th to take the game 12-8. Winning pitcher Mark Yokel improved to 4-0.

Game 2: Havana Club Cannons 19 (WP-Mark Yokel 5-0)  Sky & Sky Inc 3 (LP-Larry Newman 4-4)

Game 2 saw took a much different tone as both teams remained in a tight contest for the first four innings. Then in the t-5th the Cannons put on a clinic banging out 8 hits, punctuated by a Chuck Easter 3-run blast to dead CF--and an 11-2 lead. Despite a number of Sky & Sky line outs and sharply hit balls, the Cannons defense and bats closed the door in the 7th piling on 8 more for a final of 19-3. Yokel again over Newman. Sky & Sky's plan to contain the human sprinkler (Jeff Kurland) worked to perfection as he was held to only 8 singles in 9 at bats on the day. Meanwhile Brian Sky and Todd Casciani each enjoyed 4 hit days, and Mike Rottenberg ran his streak of reaching base safely to 10 consecutive plate appearances.

Game 2 Saw the Cannons pick up right where they left off. Scoring 3 runs to open the game. Kurland led off with a single. Chuck Easster followed with a single of his own. Mike Stellar and Lou Falcon followed with back to back two baggers to give the Cannons the 3-0 lead. Larry Newman settled down and held the Cannons scorless over the next three innings. However, 8 runs were plated in the top of the fifth inning as every Cannon either scored or knocked in a run in the inning. Thats all Yokel would need. Cannons hitters threw on an extra 8 runs in the top of the seventh to take the gaem 19-3. Yokel improves to 5-0

Hitting stars on the day for the Cannons

Jeff Kurland 10-10 with 3 doubles
Dan kassel- 5-9
Chuck Easter 6-10 with a HR
Mike Stellar- 3-7 with 5 runs scored
Lou Falcon- 6-9 4 runs and 8 RBI's

Field 2:
Game 1: Quizno's Owings Mills 12  (WP-Lane Gordon 2-0)  Northwest Corridor 5 (LP-Dave Stein 1-3)

Pretty uneventful game for both teams. Quiznos took advantage of 3 David Stein walks in the first 2 innings to jump to a 7-1 lead. NWC's bats were quiet most of the game waiting until the top of the 5th to string 3 consecutive hits. Matt Bell and Scott Landsman crossed in the 5th to make it 8-3. Gabe Unterman's triple and David Stein's sac fly brought the game to 8-5 going into the bottom of the 6th. Quiznos sensing the NWC momentum closed the door on the game with 4 runs in the bottom of the.

Quizno's Owings Mills put together a 6-Run 2nd Inning to defeat NWC 12-6. Larry Henderson went 2-2 and scored 3 runs and Todd Pobleets added a pair of runs along with a 3B. Two players made their season debuts for the Blue Wave this week: Bobby Morrow ( 1-1, 2 BB) and Joel Koman (1-3, 1 Run). "On Fire" Scott Snyder continued his torid hitting pace by adding 2 hits--and has now gone 16 for his last 19 at-bats (.842 avg). Lane Gordon pitched a strong 5 innings to get the victory as Jeff Harris notched his 2nd Save in as many weeks.

Game 2: Northwest Corridor 7 (WP-Howard Goldberg 2-1)  Quizno's Owings Mills 3 (LP-Jeff Harris 1-5)

The tone was set early in game 2 as Howard Goldberg pitched out of a jam with the help of some great defense from SS Tony Esposito. Then in the bottom of the 1st NWC rallied 4 runs across to take an early lead. Scott Sweren and Matt Bell both had doubles to help the NWC jump ahead 4-1. Quiznos bats were quiet the rest of the game versus Goldberg managing just 2 more runs. NWC added insurance runs in the 4th inning behind Aaron Birenbaum's double and Lee Pollak's screaming triple. Billy Beadle's rbi single in the 5th would end the scoring for the NWC. Final NWC 7 Quiznos 3. NWC was led by great defense all day from outfielders Gabe Unterman and Joey Liner, Tony Esposito and Matt bell were a potent 1-2 punch in the infield and plays were made all day at 3rd by John Herbst and Aaron Birenbaum.

Quizno's Owings Mills left 10 men on base and lost to a gritty NWC team by the score of 7-3. The Blue Wave hit a paltry 11-30 (.366) in Game #2- and could not get the key hit that they needed to get back into the game. With the score 7-2 in the top of the 7th- Quizno's Owings Mills rallied to get the bases loaded with no outs thanks to a leadoff 2B by Joel Koman and back-to-back walks by Jon Koman and Bobby Morrow. With the bases loaded and nobody out- Tollie hit into a double play- third to home-- and the rally turned into a dissapointing defeat.
"On Fire" Scott Snyder led the way going 3-3-- and is now 19 for his last 22 at-bats (.863 Avg.). Jeff Harris pitched well in defeat giving up only 4 earned over 7 innings.

Field 4:
Game 1: Eastern Savings Bank 11  (WP-Larry Hineline 4-0)  NEK Entertainment 2 (LP-David Pridgen 3-3)

ESB and NEK were both short handed on this almost rainy Sunday afternoon but depth proved to be the difference as ESB won the doubleheader. Game one ESB, behind Larry Hineline won 11-2. He had the hitters baffled all day with his tremendous sinker and outstanding control. Manager David Finkelstein came in to pitch a scoreless 7th. Hitting stars in game one were; Ben Gutman who had a triple, double, single and walk and 3 RBI’s, Aaron Shirfrin 2 hits and 2 runs scored, Gabe Silver 2 runs scored, 2 hits and a RBI, and Hineline with 3 hits and a RBI.

Game 2:  Eastern Savings Bank 11  (WP-Ted Winner 2-2)  NEK Entertainment 2 (LP-David Pridgen 3-4) 5 Innings

Game two was more of the same. ESB jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first and when the damage was finally over they defeated NEK 16-2 behind stellar pitching by Ted Winner. Hitting star for the day was Chris Zoeller, a home run, triple, single, and 3 runs scored. Jim Davis, 2 hits and 2 runs scored, Sam Luxenberg, 3 runs scored and a RBI, Cap Plokemba with a homerun over the center field fence (way to break out of that slump Cap), Jonny Feldman 2 RBIs. Even though NEK lost both games, ESB takes off their hats to this classy ball club who comes out on Sunday to play hard baseball and yet have a good time, very unlike last weeks games against Quiznos.
