2006 PMS at Northwest Regional Park
Week 3:  April 16, 2006

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Kings 7 (WP-Chuck Grant 1-0)  Sky & Sky Inc. 6 (LP-Larry Newman 0-3)

Both games featured pitching duels as Chuck Grant and Larry Newman benefited from good defense much of the day. The Kings pushed one across in each of the first two and added three more in the third, while Grant managed four strike outs of the first 11 batters he faced. In the t-4th Brian Sky gained some vengeance for an earlier victim with a 3-run "wind-aided" blast to left center. The game remained tied until the seventh. Three straight hits including a triple by Richard Puritz allowed Sky&Sky to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, but the the joy was short lived. The Kings' Shilo Merwitz singled home the tying run and Russ Dlin smashed a single to the left center field fence bringing home the winning run. Grant outlasted Newman for the 7-6 victory. Despite Grant's masterful performance, Dave Kowitz went 2-3 (2B,1B), Brian Sky added a single to his earlier homerun and Richard Puritz also went 2-3 (3B, 1B,2RBI). For the Kings, Dave Sandler was a perfect 4-4 including a clutch single preceding Merwitz's game tying single in the 7th, while Merwitz (2-4,1 R,1 RBI) and Troy Hendricks (2-3,1 R) were the only other multi-hit Kings.

In the Kings b-3rd with 1 out and the bases loaded, Keegan Rettaliata hit a potential double-play grounder to SS. Alan Varhaftik slid hard into 2B breaking up a likely DP, allowing Dave Sandler to score the Kings 3rd run. The prolonged rally allowed Chuck Grant to bat next and to 3B home 2 more Kings run, but those 3 Kings runs came at a high price. Varhaftik's chest hit hard against the knee of Brian Sky and the Kings unfortunately found out later in the day that Varhaftik fractured a rib. Varhaftik will be out indefinitely and will be sorely missed from the heart of the Kings line-up. Varhaftik ranks 3rd on the Kings all-time games played list with 351 (Mike Herr 494, Joel Gordon 376) and has not missed more than 2 games in any season since 1992.

Game 2:  Sky & Sky Inc. 4 (WP-Larry Newman 1-3)   Kings 0 (LP-Chuck Grant 1-1)

This was a pitching masterpiece as Newman held The Kings' bats in check all game. Brian Sky tripled in one in the b-1st, and Paul Hayes' triple helped for a second RBI. Two walks were cashed in the b-6th for insurance, but were not needed as Newman completed the 4-0 shut out. Jason Tolbert found his lead off stroke with three singles. Newman limited the Kings to just 6 singles without a walk in the nightcap. Only in the t-1st did the Kings have 2 hits in 1 inning. Another solid defensive effort was put forth by both squads.

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Stingers 13 (WP-Darron Tabatznik 1-1)  NEK Entertainment 12 (LP-David Pridgen 0-1)

Stingers opened their 3rd game of the 2006 season with determination Darren Tabaznik took a tough start with 8-0 deficit into the top of the 2nd. Stingers would come back with walks and a 2b shot by Murphy for 2 RBIs. Soon after a shot from Thoupus would put the Stingers back in the ballgame with another RBI. Stingers sent 9 hitters to plate with supporting shots from Beverly, Starobin, Engler, Schneider and Stregowski. In the bottom of the 4th, Stingers came alive again, this time taking the lead from again sending 9 hitters to the plate from Tabaznik helping out his cause, and RBIs from Murphy and Engler. NEK would make a run for it in the 5th with 3 runs, but the Stingers made definitive hit and key RBIs from Engler and Friedman to take game 1 and their 1st win of the season and give Tabaznik his W.

Game 2: NEK Entertainment 13 (WP-David Pridgen 1-1)  Stingers 1 (LP-Darron Tabatznik 1-2)  5 Innings

Game 2 came with a medical staff in the wings. Five Stingers took the field with injuries and put their all into a tuff loss. Wantz, Starobin and Murphy tried putting the Stingers on their shoulders going 7 for 9 combined. Starobin helped out his relief cause after inheriting a tuff game pitching with and RBI in the top of the 3rd to bring in Wantz.

As the Stingers split their 2nd week, they look forward to evening up their season next week against DC Dental.

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 21 (WP-Mark Yokel 2-0) Eastern Savings Bank 7 (LP-Ted Winner 1-1)
5 Innings

The match up of last years one and two seeds started out quite lopsided. The Cannons batted around twice in the first inning, plating 13 runs. The first 11 runners reached base safely. The Cannons were able to keep the bats warm, and plated another 8 runs before beating Eastern in 5 innings in a surprisingly easy win.

Hitting Stars for Cannons Game 1:

Chuck Easter 2-3, BB, HR, 4 runs, 2 RBIs
Mike Steller 2-3, HR, 5 RBIs
Lou Falcon 3-5, 3 runs, 1 RBI
Mark Yokel 3-4 2 runs, 1 RBI

Game 2: Havana Club Cannons 11 (WP-Tom Paulshock 2-0) Eastern Savings Bank 10 (LP-Jeff Harris 1-1) 8 Innings

Game two was a much better game, featuring several lead changes. Tommy Paulshock, started off shaky with many walks in the first inning leading to 5 Eastern Runs. But the Cannons tied the game with 2 in the 1st, and 3 in the second innings. Jabs were traded back and forth until the Cannons got a clutch hit from none other than Tommy P to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.

In the Bottom of the 8th, Chuck Easter lead off with a shot off the fence. After a Neal Charkatz Fly out, Mike Steller was walked intentionally. Lou Falcon hit into a fielders choice where Easter moved to 3rd base. Shawn Warner hit a line drive single up the middle for the walk off.

Hitting stars for the Cannons:

Jeff Kurland 3-5 2 runs scored
Chuck Easter 4-5 4 runs 1 RBI
Neal Charkatz 3-5 2 RBIs 1 run
Tommy Paulshock 4-4 (yes you read that right) Triple, game tying RBI and 1 run scored.

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:
Game 1: Northwest Corridor 18 (WP-Howard Goldberg 2-0) DC Dental 15 (LP- Benji Engelhart 0-1)

Things started off well for DC Dental in their inaugural game against Northwest Corridor. Yoni Blaylock led off with a single, Daniel Gutman followed with a walk and then Jeremy Lasson crushed a two-run triple to right center, but was gunned down at the plate. Lasson would later hit another triple as well as a double (he was 3 for 3 for the game). But in the end Northwest Corridor would prevail 18-15 in this wild-seesaw battle filled with an abundance of hits and errors. Ziffer, Ryback Sam Minkove, and Yoni Rose all added 3 hits and Yoseph Orshan was 2 for 4 with a triple. Benji Engelhart pitched a complete game for the loss.

After a rainout last week NWC was the opponent chosen to welcome DC Dental to the league. The 1st inning would be a preview of what to expect the rest of the game as both teams combined for 4 errors and 5 runs. The two teams would combine for at least a dozen more errors over the next 7 innings. The teams were tied 5-5 after 2inn. NWC tried to break things open in the 3rd scoring 8 times. The surplus of line drives were led by Lee Pollak and Lonnie Greenberg who both had RBI triples. Dave Stein, Scott Sweren and Scott Landsman all had RBI doubles in the 3rd. DC Dental hung tough but would never regain the lead. NWC held on after 7inn to take the victory 18-15. Jon Goldman led NWC's numerous comical highlights trying to stretch a 2B into a 3B after a throwing error his slide into third was only about 10feet too short. Somehow the DC Dental 3rd baseman was still retrieving the ball from the fence and Goldman crawled slowly to 3rd to comlete the 3 minute slide.

Hitting Stars For NWC:
Howard Goldberg 3-4 3r RBI
Scott landsman 3-4 3RBI R 2b
John Herbst 3-4 2B 3B 2r 3RBI
Lonnie Greenberg 2-3 BB 3B 3r 4RBI

Game 2: Northwest Corridor 18 (WP-Howard Goldberg 3-0) DC Dental 12 (LP- Benji Engelhart 0-2)

Northwest Corridor pulled out the sweep as they pounded another 18 runs in the second game on the way to a 18-12 victory. Engelhart again pitched a complete game for the loss. Orshan added 3 hits and another triple and Engelhart chipped in with 2 hits including a double.

NWC started off game 2 where they left game 1 jumping out to an 8-3 lead after 2inn. Scott Sweren doubled in the 1st and homered in the 2nd to lead the NWC attack. John Herbst also contributed a 2RBI double. DC Dental were issued 4 bases on balls in the 2nd but only managed 1 run. They wouldn't be so kind in the 3rd taking advantage of 3 NWC errors and a bases loaded walk they plated 4 runners. The two teams were tied at 10 after 4inn. Josh Rogers and John Herbst delivered back to back RBI extra base hits in the 4th and 5th innings. Howard Goldberg lined one over the leftcenterfield fence for a solo homerun and NWC took a 14-10 lead into the last 2 innings. DC dental managed a run in the 6th and 7th but it wouldn't be enough as NWC pushed across 4 insurance runs in the 6th. Dave Stein delivered a 2RBI triple and Eric Wingrat followed with an RBI 2B. NWC swept the double header but left banged up. Howard Goldberg was the victim of 4 comebackers to the mound resulting in 2 injuries. Lee Pollak took a foul ball to the throat from the catcher's position. In an attempt to block the ball he may have broken a finger or two. DC Dental proved to be a worthy opponent and was more impressive in their debut then the new expansion teams of the last few years. NWC goes into their battle with Eastern Savings Bank next week with a franchise best record to start a season 3-1.
