2006 PMS at Northwest Regional Park
Week 5:  April 30, 2006

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 16 (WP-Mark Yokel 3-0)  Northwest Corridor 3 (LP-Howard Goldberg 3-1)
5 Innings

The Cannons dominated NWC in game1, scoring 16 runs in 5innings to take the victory. Mark Yokel allowed just 2 hits a bunch of fc's and only 3 runs. All 3 runs scored for NWC off of a David Stein sac fly to RF. NWC was flat at the plate, slow and unmotivated on defense and shaky at the pitchers mound. The Cannons didn't need much effort to take the game 1 victory.

Mark Yokel was on cruise control only surrendering two infield hits and 1 earned run on his way to a 16-3 win. Yokel also reached base in all 3 at bats, with an RBI triple and 2 walks. The Cannons jumped out 3-0 in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

Hitting stars for the Cannons:

Jeff Kurland 3-4 2 runs, 1 RBI
Chuck Easter 3-4, HR, 4 RBIs 3 runs
Mike Steller: 3-3, HR, 5 RBIs 2 doubles
Mike Lacey: 2-3 2 RBIs
Johnny Edelman: 2-3 2 runs, 1 RBI

Game 2:  Havana Club Cannons (WP-Tom Paulshock 3-0)  Northwest Corridor (LP-Howard Goldberg 3-2)

The Cannons continued their dominance of NWC in game 2 winning 25-7. NWC gave too many chances to the Cannons giving them extra bases and failing to make routine fielding plays. Goldberg was unusually wild issuing 7 walks, all of the bases on balls came around to score. Scott Landsman, Eric Wingrat and Howard Goldberg all had multiple hit games for NWC. Goldberg's 2 hits were both rockets over the left field fence, the 2nd of which we're still waiting to land. NWC looks to rebound next week against the Stingers.

Game 2 was a little more competitive early on. The Cannons got out with 3 quick runs in the top of the 1st, but NWC roared back with 5 in the bottom of the 1st inning. From there, the Cannons scored 4 in the top of the 2nd and then the levy broke with 13 runs coming in the top of the 3rd. Chuck Easter and Mark Yokel each had 8 RBIs pacing the way for the Havana Club Cannons.

Hitting stars for the Cannons:

Chuck Easter: 4-5, 2HRs, 8 RBIs
Mike Steller HR, 2 RBIs
Lou Falcon 3-5, 3 RBIs
Johnny Edelman 2-2, 4 runs scored
Mark Yokel: 4-4, HR, 8 RBIs, 3 runs scored

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Kings 18 (WP-Chuck Grant 2-1)  NEK Entertainment 3 (LP-David Pridgen 1-2)  4 Innings

The Kings took advantage of NEK starter Dave Pridgen wildness (9 walks) and a high-sky in LF/LCF in winning the opener 18-3 in 4 innings. Fortunately, though, for Pridgen, he survived a line-drive off the thigh in the b-1st on a Chuck Grant bases-loaded smash. Dave Sandler was 2-for-2 with 5 RBI's and Troy Hendricks was 2-3 with 3 RBI's. Chuck Grant scattered 6 hits over his 4 innings of work in picking-up his 2nd win of the season.

Game 2: Kings 17 (WP-Chuck Grant 3-1)  NEK Entertainment 10 (LP-David Pridgen 1-3)

The same pitchers matched-up for game #2, but their control improved significantly. Both pitchers yielded 3 walks, but the Kings took advantage of sloppy fielding behind Pridgen and won 17-10. Of the 17 runs that Pridgen allowed, only 7 were earned. The Kings seemed to get timely hits after the NEK errors, amassing a 22 hit attack. Future team #10 manager Nate Barker filled in for the Kings in the outfield and contributed offensively with 4-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI's, double. He played solidly in left field as the Kings regular LF Alan Varhaftik is out several more weeks with a broken rib suffered 2 weeks ago against Sky. Varhaftik did come out to help coach the Kings and is now breathing much more comfortably. Stephen Georgie kept NEK in the game early with a 2 out grand-slam in b-2nd. NEK's Jason was 3-for-3.

Kings C Keegan Rettaliata made a highlight reel catch climbing the backstop and reaching over the fence to snag a foul pop. Jan Katzen also made some excellent plays at 3B.

Other offensive stars for the Kings in game 2 were:
Kenny Salzman (3-5,1 R,1 RBI,2B)
Shilo Merwitz (3-4,1 R,3 RBI,W)
Jan Katzen (2-4,3 R,3 RBI,2 3B,W)
Troy Hendricks (3-4,1 R,2 RBI,2B)
Mike Herr (2-4,3 R,3 RBI)

The Kings draw a rare BYE next week as the league temporarily expands to 9 teams, awaiting the entrance of the 10th team the following week. NEK meanwhile hopes to rebound next week against Eastern Savings Bank.

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1: Eastern Savings Bank 14 (WP-Ted Winner 2-1)  DC Dental 5 (LP-
Meir Zoller 0-1)

Game 1 was a very clean defensively game by both teams, and it took a couple mini-rally's for ESB to take control. ESB showed very patient hitting, drawing 7 walks in game 1. After a close first couple of innings, ESB struck for 4 runs in the 3 rd, cashing in on a couple of walks and clutch base hits from Cap Poklemba and Glenn Ackerman. It was a 9-5 game going to the last inning when ESB was able to put it out of reach with 4 in their half of the inning highlighted by Jason Green's solo home run.

DC Dental came up short but played competitively in both games of their doubleheader against Eastern Savings. Defensively, DC Dental tightened up led by Gutman's solid play in left centerfield but offensively was unable to capitalize with men in scoring position on several occasions. In Game 1, Zoller made his pitching debut throwing a complete game for the loss. Jon Minkove had a 3 for 4 performance with a run and an RBI, while Johnny Feldman and Engelhart each knocked in a pair of runs.

Hitting stars for ESB were:

Sam Luxenberg: 2-2, HR, 2RBI
Glenn Ackerman: 2-3, RBI,BB, 2runs
Alan Lazerow: 2-3, 2RBI, BB, 2runs

Game 2: Eastern Savings Bank 14 (WP-Jeff Harris 2-1)  DC Dental 7 (LP-
Tzvi Friedman 0-1)

ESB was able to jump out in front with a "Cannon" like start, scoring 8 times in the first inning, cashing in on 5 walks and Sam Luxenberg's 2RBI single. That was pretty much all of the offense ESB would need, holding off a steady hitting attack from DC Dental to win by a final count of 14-7.

Game 2 saw the southpaw Friedman making his debut in a complete game losing effort, keeping the opponent to only 5 runs after a rocky first inning. He helped his own cause going 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Orshen went a solid 3 for 3 despite nagging about a nagging groin injury while Engelhart went 4 for 4 from the leadoff spot. Gutman complimented his defensive performance by knocking in 2 and drawing yet another walk.

Hitting starts for ESB were:
Alan Lazerow: 4-4, triple, 2runs
Jeff Harris: 2-3, RBI, run
Glenn Ackerman: 2-4, RBI, run

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:
Game 1: Stingers 13 (WP-Rich Schneider 1-1) Sky & Sky Inc. 12 (LP- Larry Newman 1-4)

Stingers and Sky & Sky started off the day with plenty of offense between the teams. Stingers played with all engines go to give Schneider his first win of the year. Supportive bats from everyone around the lineup. Thoupus and Murphy took the teams run production over with pose to win. It was a solid batting again for Murphy, batting perfect for the day (4-4, 2 RBI).Jessmer kept the mix alive with his offensive contusions as well (4-3). Friedman left the game in the top of the sixth after a thrown bat against his ankles, but he would help his Stinger to motivate a rally in the 7th to come behind with three key hits from Beverly, Thoupus, Murphy, Jessmer and Tabatznik for a come from behind win in the bottom of the 7th as Friedman hobbled to beat the throw into second and allow the winning run to cross the plate.

Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc. 18 (WP- Larry Newman 2-4)  Stingers 6 (LP-Darron Tabatznik 1-3)

Game 2 came with injuries again and some little league Dads going to Camden Yards. The Stingers had Tabatznik on the hill to give his all. The team’s offense awoke again, but for the Stingers it was not enough. Beverly had a game to remember with his first inside the park homerun and a dazzling throw from left center to have Murphy tag out the runner at 3rd. Stingers tried jumping back into the game with a 13 run deficit, but were unable to support Tabatznik to a win.
