Week 14:  July 2, 2006

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: NEK Entertainment 17 (WP-Dave Pridgen 4-9) L.O.F.T. 2
 (LP-Greg Prush 0-1)   5 Innings

LOFT decided to give Greg Prush a shot at pitching because of his promise he showed during practice. He started game 1 of the double header and looked solid recording 2 strike outs in the first inning. Greg began to lose command in the second inning and eventually was relieved by Andy Peksa. The game was never close as team LOFT once again struggled at the plate.

Game 2:  NEK Entertainment 17 (WP-Dave Pridgen 5-9) L.O.F.T. 6  (LP-Andy Peksa 0-10)
This game was much closer, after 4 innings LOFT only trailed by 3 runs, but they could never get enough hitting to get runs on the board. As usual no real highlights to talk about for LOFT.

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1:
Kings 16 (WP-Dan Frignito 2-0) Eastern Savings Bank 14 (LP-Jeff Harris 6-3)  9 Innings

The Kings and ESB met up for a second time this season, again battling for control of 2nd place. Similar to last year's FINALS, the Kings had to face the potent ESB offense without #1 starter Chuck Grant. With Grant competing in a local bowling tournament, the Kings again turned to 2005 Conn Smythe Award Winner (MVP of Playoffs) Dan Frignito. Frignito, making his first start since opening week against NWC struggled early with control problems, but successfully found his motion, control, and stamina, leading the Kings to a 16-14, exciting 9 inning win. ESB loaded bases with none out in b-8th, but Kings were able to survive the inning scoreless thus extending the game another inning, leading to the win.

The Kings got on the board with 4 runs in t-1st with 2 RBI single by Russ Dlin, RBI single by Jan Katzen, and SF by Keegan Retalliata. ESB came out strong also, scoring 5 runs in bottom half of inning on RBI 2B by Glen Ackman, 2 RBI 3B by Scott Snyder, and 2 RBI fence-clearing HR by Cap Poklemba.  Rob Ressin started t-2nd with a walk and later scored tying run on Dave Sandler's FC. ESB scored 3 more times in b-2nd on Chris Zoeller RBI single, Jason Schwartzberg RBI 2B, and Jason Green SF. With ESB leading 10-6 after 4 innings, Kings scored 5 times, sending 10 batters to plate in t-5th. RBI singles came from Shilo Merwitz, Dan Frignito, Alan Varhaftik, Keegan Retalliata, and Troy Hendricks. Again the Kings lead was short-lived as ESB scored 3 more runs in b-5th. Jason Green scored the tie run on a fielder's choice and Sam Luxenberg and Gabe Silber both hit RBI singles to put ESB ahead 13-11. In t-6th, 4 straight hits by Rob Barrow, Kenny Salzman (RBI 3B), Dave Sandler (RBI), and Shilo Merwitz knotted score 13-13. Frignito gave up a leadoff walk to Alan Lazerow to begin b-6th, but he was able to retire the next 3 hitters in b-6th and he retired ESB 1-2-3 in b-7th to send the game into extra innings. ESB starter Jeff Harris retired the Kings in order in t-8th. In b-8th, a leadoff walk to Sam Luxenberg, single by Gabe Silber and single by Anthony Sye loaded bases with 0 outs. Harris had a chance to win his own ballgame offensively, but he hit a hard grounder to 3B Jan Katzen who fired home to C Keegan Retalliata forcing Luxenberg at the plate, and Retalliata smartly threw the ball back to Katzen at 3B to force-out Silber by 2 steps, completing a game-saving doubleplay. Frignito then got Alan Lazerow on a ground-out to SS, miraculously escaping the inning without yielding the winning run. Fortunate to be going to the t-9th, the Kings started the inning with a Merwitz single, with Merwitz moving to 2B on an outfield bobble. Frignito did help himself offensively with an RBI single. Russ Dlin followed with a HR over the LCF fence, giving Kings 16-13 lead heading to b-9th. To their credit, ESB came right back again with consecutive leadoff singles by Chris Zoeller, Jason Schwartzberg, and Jason Green (RBI). With 1 out and the score 16-14, Frignito walked Scott Snyder to load the bases. With the dangerous Cap Poklemba and Sam Luxenberg the next 2 batters, ESB still had plenty of hope. However, Frignito was able to retire both batters on infield popups to clinch the victory.

Game 1 Notes:

Game 2: Kings 5 (WP-Dan Frignito 3-0) Eastern Savings Bank 4 (LP-Lane Gordon 0-1)

The teams used up most of their offense and energy in game 1 as the Kings won a low scoring game in the nightcap 5-4. This matched the total runs scored in the first inning of the 1st game. In game 2, Lane Gordon made his season debut for ESB and pitched well for 5 innings, holding the Kings to just 9 hits in 23 at-bats, with 3 walks, and charged with all 5 runs. ESB learned earlier in the week that pitcher Ted Winner sustained a bilateral knee injury in a non-league game and is likely to be out at least 4 weeks. Jeff Harris relieved Gordon in the 6th, but it was great to see Lane return in fine form to the mound. Dan Frignito stayed on the mound for the Kings in game 2 and the youthful Frignito was even more effective and more in control during the second game.

Certainly played at a lower energy level than the exhausting 2 hr 15 minute game 1, ESB took 2-0 lead in t-2nd. They added to their lead with 2 more in t-4th on RBI single by Poklemba and SF by Luxenberg. Kings Dave Sandler decided to gather the Kings together for a brief conference and the Kings responded with 3 runs in b-4th. Leadoff hits by Merwitz, Frignito (2B), and 2 RBI 3B by Russ Dlin were the key hits. In b-5th, PH Rob Ressin started inning with a walk. Dave Sandler's RBI to RF tied score. Merwitz hit a SF to put Kings ahead 5-4. ESB was unable to scored in the last 2 innings, sending Kings home with a doubleheader sweep and sole possession of 2nd place.
