2006 PMS at Northwest Regional Park
Week 15:  July 9, 2006

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 5 (WP-Mark Yokel 9-2) Kings 2
 (LP-Chuck Grant 10-5)

Kings starter Chuck Grant (7 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 2 W,1 K) returned to the mound this week following last week's absence for a local PBA qualifying bowling tournament. While Grant's pitching returned in great form in the opener, the Kings bats failed to show up to support Grant. Jeff Kurland's 3 run HR in t-7th broke a 2-2 tie and led Cannons to a 5-2 opening game win. Cannons Mark Yokel (7 IP,8 H, 2 R, 2 ER,0 W,0 K) allowed 2 hits in inning 1 and 1 hit in innings 2-7, pitching an excellent game himself, picking up his 9th win of the season.

The Kings held an early 2-0 lead on SF by Russ Dlin in b-1st and solo HR by Keegan Rettaliata in b-2nd. Unearned single runs by the Cannons in t-3rd and t-4th produced the 2-2 score into the 7th inning. Kurland's HR came on a liner that looked catchable off-of-the-bat, but hesitation in the Kings outfield cost the Kings dearly as the ball rolled to the fence and Kurland's great speed allowed him to beat the relay throw to the plate for a 3 run HR.

Game 2: Havana Club Cannons 8 (WP-Tom Paulshock 11-0) Kings 5  (LP-Chuck Grant 10-6)

Again the 2 teams played a closely contested battle, with the Cannons breaking a 4-4 tie with 4 runs in b-5th, winning 9-5. 6 straight basehits to start the 5th put across the 4 runs and was more than enough for Cannons starter Tom Paulshock. Paulshock won his 11th straight start, allowing just 6 hits and 3 walks. Chuck Grant again threw another great game for the Kings and deserved much better for his effort, but the Kings offense was again stymied by the Cannons pitching and fine defense.

For the Cannons, Jeff Kurland (4-4,3B,2 RBI), Steve Henneman (3-4,2 RBI), Evan Kreitzer (2-3,2 R), and Tom Paulshock (2-3,1 RBI) led the way offensively. Russ Dlin (2-3,1 R,2B) was the only Kings batter with more than 1 hit.

With the doubleheader win, the Cannons have built a tremendous 6 game lead for the Regular Season title. This would be the Cannons 3rd straight Regular Season title.

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 23 (WP-Larry Newman 10-9)  Eastern Savings Bank 11 (LP-Lane Gordon 0-2) 5 Innings

With both sides missing many of their key players, this first game seemed to be a battle of who wanted it less. Eastern Savings Bank started things off by pushing a run across in the t-1st, but then yielded 6 runs--only 3 of which were earned. Sky & Sky pushed across 4 more in the b-2nd largely off the bats of Steve Truitt(2B) and Andy Bloom's 2-run jack. ESB got right back in it with 4 answer runs. However, Sky & Sky benefited from 5 runs in the b-4th, an Andy Bloom 3-run shot plus a Jeff Friedman 2-run single. ESB scored 6 in the t-5th, but Sky & Sky pushed 8 runs across (all with two outs) to win 23-11 in 5 innings. Larry Newman got the win over Lane Gordon.

Alex Newman went 2-3 (2B, 1B, BB, 3 runs), Steve Truitt went 3-4 (2B, 2 1B, 3 runs, 2 rbi), Richard Puritz added 3 hits, a walk and 2 runs. Andy Bloom had one of those days you dream about 4-4 (2 HR, 2 2B, 7 rbi, 4 runs). Sky & Sky will be chipping in for a plane ticket to return him and his wife to South Carolina the weekend before the playoffs, so he can come back just as well rested from his 4th of July trip down South.

Game 2: Eastern Savings Bank 12 (WP-Jeff Harris 7-3) Sky & Sky Inc. 0 (LP-Larry Newman 10-10)  5 Innings

Game 2 saw Jeff Harris pitch a masterpiece limiting Sky & Sky to 3 hits over 5 innings as his team allowed him to cruise to a 16-0 shutout.

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1:
Northwest Corridor 10 (WP-Terry Lanciotti 2-1) Stingers 7 (LP-Darron Tabatznik 4-9)

Stingers came out from the month long down time as a team. They opened with some help from the Glick brothers formerly of the deceased Chalmer Pants. Tim Palo and Mike Beverly were in prime season form, wheeling out in the park homeruns individually in the 1st. Unfortunately it would be the best of the bangs for the Stinger in the 1st. Top of the 1st had a few rust spots from the layoff of a month giving up 4 runs. Stinger would do their best with Matt Stregowski hustling around the bags and being driven in from a SAC by Bill Jesmer. NWC took control during the 3rd, 4th & 5th innings as the Stingers did their best to gage ball play again in the field. Stingers gave it another shot offensively as Joe Wantz and Jordan Glick reached base on their single pokes and Darren Tabaznik helped out his own cause with a double RBI single. Again in the top of the 7th the Stingers tried to pull out a “W”. Tim Palo and Mike Beverly were brought across the plate with singles for RBIs from Sean Murphy and Joe Wantz. Unfortunately it was not enough to get the “W”.

Game 2:
Northwest Corridor 10 (WP-Jason Ott 2-4) Stingers 7 (LP-Darron Tabatznik 4-10)

The night cap brought out poised base runners from walks and timely doubles from Jesmer and Murphy to put the Stinger up in the 1st by 3 runs. Bottom of the 2nd brought more plating with a lead off double from Rich Schneider and a SAC from Beverly. Again Tim Palo turned on the jets with another in the park homer. NWC would battle back in the 3rd with three runs. Stingers answered that with a great shot by Joe Wantz but unfortunate coaching drew him into a tag at 3rd. Rich Schneider again picked up his day long battle (besides being hand cuffed by knuckle balls of a doubleheader catching effort thrown from Tabaznik) with and RBI to plate Jordan Glick. The 4th inning brought a team effort from the Stingers with a full round of at bats and RBIs from Jesme r(2), Murphy (1), Mike Soco (1), Matt Stregowski (1), Jordan Glick(1) and a SAC from Matt Glick. Unfortunately it would not be enough as NWC did the same in the top of the 5th. Stingers would again do their best to battle back but to little avail in the 6th and 7th innings.

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:
Game 1: NEK Entertainment 10  (WP-David Pri
dgen 6-9)  DC Dental 6 (LP-Chananya 0-1)

Despite the absence of half the outfielders, both pitchers, and a few others, DC Dental got back in the win column splitting with NEK thanks to some great plays in the field and the help of a few ringers and randoms picked up on the way to the game.

D.C Dental got off to a great start putting up three runs in the first inning. NEK would battle back putting up two per inning over the next three taking a 6-4 lead going into the fourth. D.C Dental would then go down 1-2-3 over the next three innings. NEK would only put up four more runs for the rest of the game but that proved to be enough with great pitching and defense.

Game 1 featured a guest pitcher, Chananya, who was able to keep NEK to just 10 runs in the complete game loss. DCD scored 3 runs in the first on RBI's by Orshen, Minkove and Lasson and another 2 in the 3rd on a 2 run HR by Engelhart. Unfortunately for DCD, their run production ended there and some costly errors in the field contributed to a couple big innings that put NEK over the top.

Hitting Stars for NEK:
Neal Frederick 2-4 1rbi
Stephen Georgie 2-4 2rbi
David Pridgen 2-4 2rbi
Marqui Garret 2-3 1rbi

Game 2: DC Dental 9 (WP-Joe Orshen 1-0) NEK Entertainment 8 (LP-Marqui Garrett 2-1)

NEK would strike first putting up 5 runs in the top of the first but D.C. Dental would crawl back in the bottom of the inning with 4 runs of their own. Inning two saw NEK scoreless with D.C. Dental tying the game at 5. NEK would only score 2 in the third and 1 more run in the top of the fourth. With the game tied going into the bottom of the sixth D.C. Dental would score one run taking the lead. With the top of the lineup coming to bat in the seventh NEK looked to be in good position. NEK would hit three straight fly balls to end the game. There was no run support for Marqui Garrett who pitched a good game.

Game 2 featured the debut of Orshen, a southpaw, who pitched a complete game for the victory and also provided a live pitch by pitch commentary. DCD scored 4 in the first on 2-run hits by Lasson and Rybeck. DCD added another run in both the 2nd and 3rd innings and 2 more in the 4th to tie the game. The score remained tied till the bottom of the 6th when Ziffer scored from first on a hit by Engelhart which proved to be the game winner.
