2006 PMS at Northwest Regional Park
Week 6:  May 7, 2006

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Eastern Savings Bank 9 (WP-Ted Winner 3-1)  NEK Entertainment 8 (LP-David Pridgen 1-4)

Both teams played tremendous defense in game 1, and it was a shame that someone had to take the loss. After NEK jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, ESB scrapped together a few runs to take a 4-3 lead going into the 6 th. However, NEK responded with 5 in the bottom half of the 5th to take an 8-4 lead – however, those were the last runs they would see. ESB came back with 4 of their own in the top of the 6th to tie the score, scored 1 more in the top of the 7th, and shut down NEK in the bottom half of the 7th to win 9-8.

Hitting stars for ESB:
Glen Ackerman – 3-3, 2RBI
Chris Zoeller – 2-3, BB

Game 2:  Eastern Savings Bank 23 (WP-Jeff Harris 3-1)  NEK Entertainment 8 (LP-David Pridgen 1-5)  4 Innings

ESB came out looking hungry in game 2 after a lackluster offensive performance in game 1. ESB scored 5 in the 1st, but NEK responded with 2 of their own in the bottle of the first to cut the lead to 5-2. However, ESB scored 3 in the 2 nd, 14 in the 3rd, and 1 in the 4th to take the nightcap 23-4 (in 4 innings).

Hitting stars for ESB were:
Scott Snyder – 4-4, 2HR (in the same inning!), 4RBI
Jason Schwartzberg – 3-4, 5RBI
Alan Lazerow – 3-3, 2B, BB, RBI
Jim Davis – 2-3, 3RBI

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 17 (WP-Mark Yokel 4-0)  Sky & Sky Inc. 14 (LP-Larry Newman 2-5)

This week was marked by numerous absences for the Cannons, none more conspicuous than second basemen Mike Lacey. Also missing were Lou Falcon and Mike Steller, all told, the starting second basemen, SS, 3rd basemen who double as the regular 3,4,5 hitters were missing. The Cannons played this game with 9 players...Things got off to a slow start for the Cannons, as Sky was up 3-0 after the 1st inning, but the Cannons still hit the ball hard of Larry Newman today. The Cannons scored 4,3,2,4,4 runs respectively in the 2nd through 6th innings and only took control in the 5th inning. Mark Yokel held Sky scoreless in the last 3 innings, and that was the difference.

Mr. Sky did launch a one handed, outside off the plate shot to center for an impressive homerun for Sky and Sky.

Danny Kassel and Jeff Kurland filled in at SS and 3B admirably, helping Yokel seal the victory.

Hitting stars for the Cannons in game 1:
Chuck Easter 3-5 4 runs scored, HR, 2 rbis
Neal Charkatz 4-5, 4 runs scored and 2 rbis
Shawn Warner 5-5 2runs, 2 rbis
Evan Kreitzer 5-5 3 rbis

Game 2: Havana Club Cannons 18 (WP-Tom Paulshock 4-0)  Sky & Sky Inc. 6 (LP-Larry Newman 2-6)  5 Innings

With the addition of Tommy Paulshock in game 2, the Cannons were able to field 10 players. The defense played a huge roll in this game for the Cannons, as Danny Kassel (SS), Neal Charkatz (2B) and Mark Yokel (1B) turned two 6-4-3 dps. Jeff Kurland went horizontal on a screaming line drive from one Sky batter to rob an extra base hit. The Cannons jumped out 7-2 after the first inning, and never looked back. The first 4 Cannons batters went single, Homerun, single, Homerun. (Kurland, Easter, Charkatz, Warner).

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1: Northwest Corridor 17 (WP-Howard Goldberg 4-2)  Stingers 4 (LP-Rich Schneider 1-2)
5 Innings

NWC jumped all over the Stingers starting out the top of the first with 7 quick runs. Consecutive rbi hits from David Stein, Howard Goldberg and Eric Wingrat gave NWC the early lead. Wanting a win to redeem themselves from last week's beating, NWC went for the jugular and pushed across 6 more runs in the second inning. Matt Bell delivered a clutch bases loaded double. Stein and Goldberg had back to back rbi doubles in the 3rd and NWC added a run in the 4th and 5th to end the game 17-4. The Stingers managed a small rally in the 2nd plating 4runs of their own. Scott Sweren and John Herbst managed a steady NWC outfield. Jason Ott made his Pikesville Men's Softball League pitching debut, throwing 2 scoreless innings to end the game. Howard Goldberg: 2 earned runs, 2 walks, and only 3 hits in his 3 innings of work.

Stingers opened the morning with the rut they left last week. Schneider had a little trouble on the mound and NWC was just lucky enough to put the ball in front and out of reach of Stinger fielders. Stingers tried rallying back into the game in the bottom of the 2nd. Bill Jesmer opened up the score board with 2 RBIs followed Matt Stregowski helping out with a sac and Brad Starobin with a single poke to produce a 4 run inning. This was not the morning the Stingers were looking for.

Hitting Stars For NWC:
David Stein 3-3 3r 2b 2rbi sac
Jon Goldman 3-3 3r rbi BB
Eric Wingrat 3-4 2r rbi

Game 2: Northwest Corridor 10 (WP-Howard Goldberg 5-2)  Stingers 9 (LP-Darron Tabatznik 1-4)

Game 2 the Stingers came out fired up and determined to split the doubleheader. Taking advantage of 3 NWC errors they jumped out to a 1st inning 5-0 lead. The NWC defense wouldn't get much better in the 2nd inning letting another Stingers run score off of 2 errors. Down 6-1 going into the bottom of the 3rd NWC jumped back into the game with a much needed 2 run single from Scott Sweren and a 2 rbi triple from Dave Stein. the Stingers wouldn't quit scoring 2 runs in the top of the 7th to take a 9-8 lead and the taste of victory into the bottom of the 7th. John Herbst led off the inning with a clutch triple over the centerfielder's head. Scott Sweren walked and David Stein drove in the tying run with a sac fly. Howard Goldberg came up next and drove another fly to deep center, Scott Sweren's heads up base running allowed him to score from 2nd and give NWC the victory.

Stingers regrouped and opened the 2d game with a 5 run lead from a full at bat in the lineup. Bill Jesmer was his own cause with heads up base running creating errors by NWC fielders to score on the Stingers only hit of the inning. Stingers again tried to keep the “W” alive with an RBI shot by Matt Friedman to have Jesmer cross the plate. Stingers would fight back in the top of 7th to take back the lead from NWC, but again the rut the Stingers had fallen into showed its face with lucky hitting again and time base running by NWC.

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:
Game 1: DC Dental 16 (WP-
Meir Zoller 1-1) L.O.F.T. 1 (LP- Dan Mabry 0-1) 4 Innings

DC Dental got their first win of the season in a solid all around 17-1 victory that featured patient hitting, great pitching and flawless defense. L.O.F.T.'s pitchers were unable to find the strike zone in their first game in the league as they walked 12 DC dental hitters (leadoff hitter Benji Engelhart set the tone by walking in each of his 4 at bats.) Joe Rombro also hit the team's first homer of the season, an inside the parker in the right center gap. Zoller pitched a complete game (only 5 innings b/c of the blowout rule) and only allowed one run.

L.O.F.T. losing pitcher was Dan Mabry who pitched 2.1 innings and gave up 5 runs. In the bottom half of the first with bases loaded and no outs Dan Mabry forced the next batter to pop out, and the following batter to line into a double play to end the inning with no damage. L.O.F.T.'s first hit of the year came from Dennis Rishel, a basehit up the middle, and he later scored off of a sac fly from Brett Henry.

Hitting stars for DC Dental

Engelhart- 0 for 0 (4 BBs)
Gutman- 1 for 2 (1 double, 2 BBs)

Game 2:

DC Dental 18 (WP-Meir Zoller 2-1) L.O.F.T. 1 (LP- Andy Peksa 0-1) 4 Innings

DC Dental finished off the Sunday sweep in a similar 18-1 win. Although L.O.F.T. was able to find the plate better this game, DC Dental used its new found power to club 8 extra base hits including an inside the park homer by Benji Engelhart. Zoller pitched another shortened complete game allowing just one run and improving his record to 2-1. One other note: Despite being plagued with a Lactaid induced stomach ailment, Orshan was able to make his presence known.

Once again not many highlights for team L.O.F.T. Losing pitcher was Andy Peksa who only pitched 0.2 innings and gave up 6 runs. In the second inning a ball was hit in the gap and Dan Mabry retrieved it and gunned the runner down at second base for the third out. The only run for team L.O.F.T. was scored by Dennis Rishel once again, and once again the RBI went to Brett Henry, but this time it was off of a base hit in the third inning.

Overall Team Loft struggled in their debut, but look to bounce back next week in the inaugural league game for Team #10 / Chalmers Pants Company.
