2007 Pikesville Men's Softball League
Week 13:  July 1, 2007

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 12 (WP-Larry Newman 6-6) LOFT 0 (LP-Andy Peksa 4-6)
5 Innings

This day was truly a tale of two teams as game one produced a 12 - 0 blowout in 5 innings. In the b-3rd Sky & Sky exploded for 10 runs virtually putting the game out of reach. It started off with a single which was misplayed into a 3 base error, followed by 4 consecutive RBI base hits and capped off with a grand slam by Brian Weiss past a very shallow outfield. A run in the fourth and fifth inning allowed Larry Newman to capture the victory over Andy Peska. The aforementioned Brian Weiss added two singles, while Alex Newman went 2 for 3 with a double and Eric Gertner went 1-2, BB plus two RBI. Larry Newman walked the leadoff batter on the day but then proceeded to limit L.O.F.T. to 5 hits while pitching 7 scoreless innings over the double header.

Nothing major to report on LOFT's end of game 1. It was 0-0 until bottom of the 3rd when Sky and Sky was able to score 10 runs off a lot of hits mixed with a few errors. Sky and Sky ended up winning the game 12-0 in 5 innings.

Game 2:  Sky & Sky Inc. 6 (WP-Larry Newman 7-6) LOFT 5 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-10)

A much different story in game 2 as L.O.F.T. held Sky & Sky to just two measly runs through six innings. Kory Rosenberg stymied the Sky & Sky batters most of the game while his team put 5 runs on the board. Then in the t- 7th, things got interesting. Kory gave up 3 walks and 3 doubles, as Pat Wilcox got Sky & Sky to within one run, followed by Eric Gertner's 2B giving Sky & Sky a slim lead. L.O.F.T. was not able to "pick up" their pitcher as Rosenberg suffered an incredibly hard luck loss. Larry Newman came in to get the win with 3 scoreless innings of work in relief of his son...who will have his allowance withheld this week. Eric Gertner again came up huge with 3 RBI, 2 2B while Pat Wilcox went 1-2, BB and 2 RBI.

Game 2 was a much different story for LOFT as the bats came up with a few more hits then in the first game. LOFT got on the board quickly in the bottom of the 1st with a 2 RBI double by Pete Sclafani. Sky and Sky came back quickly and tied the game in the top of the 2nd, but LOFT regained the lead by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th on a RBI double by Kory Rosenberg and RBI singles by Ryan Mente and Mike Leizear. Kory Rosenberg was on top of his game all game on the pitching mound only giving up 2 runs
thru 6 innings. LOFT took the field in the top of the 7th with a 3 run lead looking to finish 2-2 on the year against Sky and Sky. Sky and Sky however was able to come up with some timely hitting to score 4 runs and take a 1 run lead. LOFT has runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs and Dan Mabry at the plate, but Larry Newman was able to get him to ground to the SS to end the game. Another tough 1 run loss for LOFT this season, but with a couple key players missing came out and gave it their best effort.

Offensive Stars for LOFT:
Brandon Mabry: 3-4, 3 1B, R
Pete Sclafani: 1-3; 2B, 2 RBI, R
Kory Rosenberg: 1-3; 2B, RBI, R
Adam Crothers: 2-3; 2 1B
Mike Leizear: 2-3: 2 1B, RBI

Post Game Notes:
- Andy Peksa made his debut at 3B for LOFT today and turned a double play and had many other fine plays at third.
- Brett Henry's slump continues as he is 4 for his last 17 and hitting .235 over that stretch.

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Kings 7 (WP-Mike Herr 1-0) Stingers 2 (LP-Randy Rivera 3-4)

With Chuck Grant driving back to town from a Nevada bowling tournament, Mike Herr took the mound for the Kings. Scattering 8 singles, 1 double, and 0 walks, Herr and the Kings were victorious over the Stingers 9-2 in the opener. Jan Katzen paced the Kings offense with 3 RBI's.

In b-1st, Rob Ressin singled to start Kings inning, Dave Sandler followed with an RBI 3B, and Sandler scored the go ahead run on a Shilo Merwitz 1B. The Kings would maintain this lead the rest of the game. The Kings scored twice more in b-3rd as Ressin again reached base to lead off the inning with a walk. Dave Sandler reached on an infield error, while Shilo Merwitz again singled, and Jan Katzen followed with a 2 RBI single, putting the Kings ahead 4-1. In t-4th, Stingers fought back loading the bases with 0 outs, but following an infield pop-out, Randy Rivera delivered an RBI SF scoring Mike Basoco, however on the play Mike Beverly left too early while tagging to go from second base to third base, thus ending the inning with the Stingers only scoring 1 run. The game remained 4-2 into the b-6th, when the Kings got 5 insurance runs. The key hits were an RBI 3B by Katzen, RBI 1B by Alan Varhaftik, RBI 2B by Rob Barrow, and RBI 1B by Troy Hendricks.

Stingers took to the bats early with Mike BaSoco doing his best to get things going in the first. Sean Murphy would continue his streak driving runs in in each game for the season. Randy Rivera took a little time against the Kings bats allowing two runs for the Kings to take the lead. The Kings would tack on two more in the b-3rd to move further ahead of the Stingers. With singles from Soco, Mike Beverly and Murphy, the Stingers would get a SAC from Rivera to help his cause. Thereafter the Stingers’ would get stay quiet for the rest of the game. Shilo Merwitz took the hill for the Kings in the nightcap and picked-up his first Kings career pitching win. Merwitz got run support early and pitched well, allowing the Kings to sweep the Stingers with a game 2 8-3 victory. Kings got on the board first with 2 runs in t-1st. Rob Ressin reached on a 1 out infield error, advanced to second base when Dave Sandler drew a walk, and scored on a Merwitz RBI single. Sandler later scored on Alan Varhaftik's SF to LF. Kings extended the lead by 3 more runs in t-2nd. Keegan Rettaliata singled, Rob Barrow walked, and Troy Hendricks singled to drive in Rettaliata. Kenny Salzman hit a 1 out SF to LF to score Barrow, and Ressin hit a 2B to score Ben Petasky. The Stingers scored 1 run in b-2nd when James Engler drew a bases loaded walk. The Kings added 2 more runs in t-3rd, both unearned to further extend lead 7-1. Sean Murphy had an RBI 1B for the Stingers in the bottom of the inning (7-2). Kings got that run back in t-4th as Ben Petasky singled with 1 out and scored following a walk to Mike Herr and RBI single by Dave Sandler. The Stingers got their final run in b-6th with a Randy Rivera 3B to LF and a Lee Demsky SF.

Darron Tabatznik allowed just 9 hits to go along with the 8 runs, but he walked 5 batters and was victimized by 4 errors by his defense. 2 of the runs he allowed were unearned. Meanwhile, the Kings committed just 1 error (and 1 fly ball/double lost in the sun in LF) in the doubleheader behind their pitching staff.

Stingers tried turning things around, but the Kings had other ideas plating five after two innings. In the b-2nd. Aaron Shiffrin got into the swing of it, followed by Rivera’s single. Brad Starobin would walk on balls to load the bags. James Engler would keenly take a walk to plate the awaiting Shifrin on third. Stingers would only be able to manage another run from singles of the Stingers Soco, Tim Palo, Beverly and Murphy. The Kings would put up another grouping of runs to run the score to 8-2 after 5 ½. Rivera would not go done easily though with his monstrous triple into left. Lee Densky would later send one deep into the Kings outfield to plate Rivera from a SAC.

Game 1: Northwest Corridor 9 (WP-Howard Goldberg 5-5) NEK Entertainment 5 (LP-David Pridgen 2-6)

Fired up on a gorgeous Sunday morning NWC and NEK both looked to put an end to current losing streaks. NWC batted first and quickly jumped out to an early lead. Joey Liner led off the game with a double to left field. Matt Bell drove him in followed by an rbi single from Dave Stein to knock in Howard Goldberg from second base. In the top of the second Aaron Birenbaum scored after an rbi double from Matt Bell. Things were going well for Howard Goldberg on the mound allowing just 1 hit after 2 innings. NWC added another run in the top of the 3rd. Chris Canosa led off the inning with a line drive single and Dave Stein drove him in two batters later. NEK took advantage of a walk, an off target NWC throw from the outfield and two singles to score 3 runs in their half of the 3rd. NEK got close scoring 2 in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 1 run ballgame but NWC managed 1 in the 6th and 3 more insurance runs in the 7th to lock the game up 9-5.

NEK came out slow falling behind by 4 runs. In the bottom of the third inning NEK manage to put up 3 runs coming within 1 run. In the 4th inning NWC would add another run. NEK fought back in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring 2 runs and tying the game. That would be all that NEK could manage, they would not score in the final 2 innings. NWC added 1 run in the 6th and 4 more to close the game out. A valiant effort by NEK, but no cigar.

Game 2: Northwest Corridor 11  (WP-Ted Winner 4-6) NEK Entertainment 10 (LP-Jeff Harris 4-8)

This game started how the first game ended. NWC came out and put up 5 big runs to start the game. The bottom of the order for NEK would scrap back in the game with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd inning. Again in the top of the 4th inning the bottom of the line up would start a key rally for NEK in which the score 6 runs taking a 9-5 lead but NEK’s worst enemy came out in the bottom of the fourth (ERRORS) and would give up 6 runs seeing NWC take the lead right back. Down two runs in the bottom of the seventh, NEK had one more chance to win. Kevin Purnell would start the inning off with a double. A walk and a single loaded the bases up. Another walk brought in a run, now down 1 run bases loaded. David Pridgen comes to bat and a does not pull thru hitting a lazy fly ball to the shortstop and the man on first is double up ending the game. Again no cigar.

NEK batted first and managed a couple base runners off of Ted Winner but no runs scored. NWC stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the 1st and jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Joey Liner led off another game with a base hit followed by a Matt Bell walk and a Howard Goldberg rbi single. Ted Winner had his own rbi single and Aaron Birenbaum delivered a 2run base knock to right field. NEK refused to roll over and scored 3 runs in the 2nd off of 3 singles and 1 walk. The two teams went into the 4th with same 5-3 score. NEK delivered the big inning they were waiting all afternoon for in the top of the 4th. Ted Winner didn't let up any extra base hits but NEK took advantage of a few walks and 5 line drive singles to score 6 runs. Suddenly down by 4 runs NWC was determined to take the lead back in the bottom of the 4th. Matt Bell got things started reaching on an error by the NEK 3rd baseman. Goldberg and Canosa delivered back to back singles and Ted Winner reached on a fielder's choice. David Stein doubled to right center and Adam Silverman singled to get NWC to a 9-9 tie. Amit Nadiv NWC's emergency 10th player came to bat after striking out and walking in his 1st two ever Pikesville Men's Softball League at bats. The NEK outfield moved in extremely shallow and Amit drilled a line drive over the right fielder's head which rolled to the fence. Two more runs would score on Nadiv's triple and NWC regained the lead 11-9. Top of the 7th same score NEK came to bat off of Winner ready to rally a comeback come from behind win. Things started out well with the NEK leadoff batter drilling a double to centerfield. The next batter walked and he was followed by another base runner reaching on an error to load the bases. NEK got 1 run through trailing by 1 still with bases loaded and only 1 out. Winner forced an infield pop up which Chris Canosa caught and then drilled a quick throw to Dave Stein at first. Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 15  (WP-Mark Yokel 10-0) DC Dental 1 (LP-Lane Gordon 3-2)  5 Innings

In game 1, the Cannons immediately rebounded from their lone defeat of the season as they drilled the Dentists 15-1. The Cannons scored 7 runs in the top of the first highlighted by a Sean Warner 3-run blast over the RCF fence. Mark Yokel enjoyed the early run support and cruised through 5 innings for the victory.

The Cannons made quick work of DCD in the opener with a 15-1 five inning win behind Yokel. But the nightcap turned out to be quite the thriller. With Mark "Devo" Loeb making an emergency start for DC Dental, and with the presence of Tommy Paulshock on the mound the game had all the makings of a Cannon rout and an easy sweep.

The Dentals then decided to stage an improbable comeback putting 11 runs on the board for a 14-10 lead. The Cannons, however, promptly responded with a 5-run comeback of their own. Jeff
Kurland again played the role of hero delivering a two-out single for the victory.

And for the first 6 innings it was headed that way with the Cannons holding a 10-3 entering the top of the 7th. But DCD decided to finally get out of bed late on the Sunday morning and sending 17 men to the plate and scoring 11 (8 after their were 2 outs). Ziffer, Prevas and Minkove each added 2 hits in the rally as DCD overcame the huge deficit to take a 14-10 lead and knock Paulshock out of the game. However, the excitement was short-lived. The Cannons quickly responded with 4 of their own in the bottom of the 7th to tie it up. And then delivered a Jeff Kurland 2 out walkoff single to win it.
