Men's Softball League
Week 15:
July 15, 2007
Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Kings 15 (WP- Mike Herr 2-0) LOFT 0 (LP-Andy Peksa 4-8) 4
Innings
Missing 4 players due to an Ocean City co-ed softball tournament, the Kings asked former offensive star Jeff Slutzker to un-retire yet again to wake up the Kings bats. Slutzker and the Kings out-hit LOFT 8-7 in the opener, but 6 walks and 6 errors, turned the score into a 15-0 4 inning route. LOFT starter Andy Peksa was victimized by his defense committing 6 errors in the b-1st, as the Kings scored 10 runs, with only 1 run being earned. Meanwhile, Kings starter Mike Herr did not allow a walk and pitched a 4 inning shutout. Herr was the only Kings batter with 2 or more hits, but Nate Barker knocked in 4 runs and Slutzker had 2 RBI's. For LOFT, Peksa was 2-for-2, but the rest of his team was just 6-for-18.
Game 2: Kings 21 (WP- Mike Herr 3-0) LOFT 2 (LP-Mike 0-1) 4 Innings
Kings hit their way to a victory in the nightcap scoring 6 runs in t-1st and adding 15 more runs in t-2nd on their way to a 21-2 win and a doubleheader sweep. The Kings did not let down in game 2 against LOFT as they did 5 weeks ago. Having scored on 2 RBI singles by Jeff Slutzker and Jan Katzen in t-1st, Kings scored 6 times on 5 hits. For LOFT, in b-1st Mike led off the inning with a single, Brandon Mabry tripled to RF (RBI), and Mabry scored on an Andy Peksa fielder's choice groundout, coming home on the throw to first base (no RBI). Kings added 15 runs and 11 hits in t-2nd, chasing starter Mike. Kings starter Mike Herr retired the final 11 LOFT batters in order to close out the game after allowing 3 hits in 1st inning.

Kings post-game notes:
Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 10 (WP- Larry Newman
9-6) DC Dental 4 (LP-
Lane Gordon 4-3)
Both teams came out of the gate with a few runs in the
first few innings frames, but D.C Dental's bats cooled off, while Sky & Sky
continued to add a run or two here and there. The final score of 10-4 is a
bit deceiving, but Sky & Sky's defense did hold their opponents to 7 hits in
the game.
Best offensive players in Game 1 for DCD (sad as it
was):
Orshan 2-3, 2 doubles, 2 runs
B. Gutman 1-2, 1 single, 1 bb, 1 RBI
Gross 1-3, 1 double, 1 run
Rombro 1-2, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 run
Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc. 8 (WP-Larry Newman 10-6) DC Dental 3 (LP-Dave Finkelstein 1-1)
Game two was much the same, as not many fireworks were
seen from either team. Sky & Sky coasted to a lazily earned win 8-3 again
allowing those "lucky 7" hits.
Of particular note was something which could shake up Sky & Sky's momentum
heading into August. Rumors abound that Scott Felton may be lost for the
rest of the season. Upon seeing some old friends arrive to play softball in
the afternoon tournament, Scott stepped on a tube of Vasoline while rushing
to greet them. His fall was not graceful, spraining his pinkie in his left
hand and straining his buttocks muscle. His injury is by no means
season-ending, but it appears Scott may be "changing teams" to join his old
friends for the rest of the season. Scott, everyone awaits your decision
with baited breath...
Best offensive players in Game 2 for DCD (just as
sad as Game 1):
Lazerow 1-1, 1 single, 1 SF, 1 RBI
Minkove 1-2, 1 double
Tom 3-3, 2 singles, 1 triple
Rombro 1-3, 1 single, 1 RBI, 1 run
Orshan 2-3, 2 singles

Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 21 (WP- Mark Yokel 13-0) NEK Entertainment 7 (LP-David
Pridgen 2-8) 5 Innings
The Cannons bats exploded out of the gate in game 1
scoring 14 runs before NEK scored 1 in the B 3rd. In the top of the 4th the
Cannons plated another 7 runs to take a commanding 21-1 lead after 3 1/2, but
needing 6 runs to continue the game in the B 4th, NEK came alive and scored 6.
After 5 full innings, the scored remained the same, and the 12 run rule was
called into effect.
Hitting Stars for the Cannons in game 1:
Johnny Edelman: 2-5 HR 3 runs, 3 rbis
Chuck Easter: 2-3 4 runs, 1 rbi
Steve Henneman: 4-5 4 singles, 3 runs 2 rbis
Mike Steller: 4-5 3 runs 3 rbis
Neal Charkatz 3-4 2 runs 2 rbis
Havana Club Cannons 10 (WP-Tom Paulshock 10-1) NEK
Entertainment 5 (LP-Jeff Harris 4-10)
Game 2 was a much different affair. Jeff Harris once again
slowed the Cannons bats for the bulk of the game. NEK jumped out 3-0 in the top
of the first inning. The Cannons quickly responded with 4 in the bottom of the
1st keyed by a 2 out 2 RBI single by Neal Charkatz, followed by an RBI single to
right by Tommy Paulshock. The Cannons plated 2 more in the B 2nd, but couldn't
score for the next 3 innings while NEK chipped away at the lead.
Going into the Bottom of the 6th, the Cannons lead 6-5
in a narrow game, but once again pulled away late in what seems to be a frequent
occurrence for this version of the Cannons. Keyed by a 1 out towering solo
homerun to left center by Steve Hayes, the Cannons plated 4 runs. Luis Falcon
added a 2 RBI single to cap the scoring, and with a clean slate in the 7th by
Tommy a victory was in hand 10-5 for the Cannons.
Hitting stars for the Cannons in game 2:
Steve Henneman 3-4 2 runs scored
Mike Steller 3-4 1 run scored 3 rbis
Luis Falcon 2-4 2 rbis
Tommy Paulshock 2-3 1 rbi
Mark Yokel 2-2 BB 2 runs scored

Game 1: Stingers 8 (WP-Darron Tabatznik 5-7) Northwest Corridor 7 (LP-Howard
Goldberg 5-7) 8 Innings
Stingers and NWC had the game of the week. It was Darron
Tabatznik v. Howard Goldberg. NWC opened the game with three runs through key
placement hitting. The Stingers did the same, but Stingers did it with their
front speed and key hitting from Tim Palo and Mike Beverly’s bats. After one
inning of play, it would be tied at 3 all. For the rest of the game it would be
a dog fight though with the defenses. Jeb Buchman had his wheels turning along
with aerial flying through the air on two occasions to shut down NWC’s chances
with runners on the bases as threw tried dropping in and blasting another in the
gap. Aaron Shiffrin and Sean Murphy took care of the left infield while James
Engler put his scooper to good use. In the fifth, it would be another fight, as
each team only squeak out one run a piece. In the b-6th it was all Stingers as
Tim Palo (1B) and Mike Beverly (BB) each got on the bases for Sean Murphy’s at
bat. With two runners on, Murphy opened the door and lasered a shot into
right-center, hustling out an in-the-park homerun to give the Stingers a three
run lead. NWC would work through a bunch of errors by the Stringer to plate
three and tie things up again.
This one would need extra innings. With the top of the order for the Stingers
coming to bat. With singles from Buchman and Soco, followed by a walk of
Beverly, it was time for Murph again. Bases loaded and one away, Sean Murphy
would drive the ball into deep left to score Buchman and take game one.
Game 2:
Stingers 11
(WP-Scott Leder 3-0 (2-0 with Stingers,
1-0 with DCD) Northwest Corridor 1 (LP-Ted Winner
4-8)
After going through 8 innings in the first game and an early departure from one of the Stingers, the Stingers took the field with ten to play with. Scott Leder took the mound for the Stingers against Ted Winner. NWC took care of business in the first allowing only the top four of the Stingers to bat, But Leder and the Stingers would return the favor in the b-1st. In the t-2nd Aaron Shiffrin got into the groove again, followed by Lee Densky to have runners on first and second. Brad Starobin would be able to drive in Shiffrin to plate one for the Stingers and take the lead. In the b-2nd it would be the beginning of a sweep for the Stingers as they took defensive control with defense from the flying Buchman and great pitching from Leder. NWC would squeak out a run though in the b-4th, but it would be all they could put on the board. Stingers took control of the day in the t-5th batting around, as four of ten Stingers; Buchman, Shiffrin, Densky and Friedman, would drive in a combined 6 runs to take the lead without looking back. With the sweep on the day, Stingers won the most games in the franchise history for a single season.
