2007 Pikesville Men's Softball League
Week 16:  July 22, 2007

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 18 (WP-Zach Scherr 3-5) Stingers 6  (LP- Scott Leder 3-1)
6 Innings

Stingers started the day in a bit of confusion-- scheduled Stingers starting pitcher Darron Tabatznik was a no show-- never a good thing with a chance at 4th place looking hopeful. Coming out of the pen early to cover on the day for the Stingers was Scott Leder. Game one, Stingers opened with a lead and a in-the-park homer with bases loaded by Sean Murphy to start things off. Sky would get things going reducing the deficit by three. Stingers added another run, but Sky would come back and place the ball long with the wind blowing and in key spots where Stingers were not. Shortly thereafter, Stingers’ bats would fall into pop-up land and would turn the game over to Sky.

Game 1 was a case for both teams of give an inch while the other team takes a mile. The Stingers drew two walks and an error in the opening frame. Then a single to LF turned into 4 runs, as the ball went under one glove and came to rest comfortably at the base of the fence. The stingers took their 4-run lead into the field in the b-3rd, but that's when the Sky & Sky alarm clock went off as twelve runs crossed the plate. Zach Scherr only allowed a few more Stinger hits on his way to the 18-6 victory. Of note was the first intentional walk issued to Mike Rotts in 12 years (per the Elias sports Bureau). Despite his initial protest, Rotts begrudgingly made his way to first base followed immediately by Steve Truitt's bases loaded single giving Sky & Sky the 5-inning victory.

Game 2:  Sky & Sky Inc. 18 (WP-Larry Newman 11-6) Stingers 1  (LP- Scott Leder 3-2)  5 Innings

Game two was not particularly exciting. Larry Newman surrendered just 1 run on his way to a 5-inning,18-1 blowout, riding his defense to an impressive outing. The Sky & Sky bats gave Newman an early 5-run cushion, and they never looked back.

Game 2 was not much of a change as Scott Leder continued his pitching for the day. Sky would not muster many long balls, but Stingers would not mst(??) many at bats pop up and hitting into double plays. It would be a tough loss for Stingers as they try to recover and move into play off mode.

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Kings 8  (WP-Chuck Grant 12-7) NEK Entertainment 5 (LP-Jeff Harris 4-11)

Kings Chuck Grant homered and scattered 9 hits on the mound in leading the Kings to a 8-5 game 1 win over NEK Entertainment. Rashaad Johnson put NEK ahead in t-2nd with a SF to leftfield. NEK rallied for 3 runs in t-6th on triples by Stephen 'Mikey' Georgie and Marqui Garret (RBI) and RBI single by Dave Pridgen. KIngs added an insurance run in b-6th on another Barrow 2 out RBI hit, putting Kings ahead 8-4. In t-7th, 1 out singles by Rashaad Johnson and Kevin Purnell led to 1 run following an infield error, but with 2 out and 2 on, Grant was able to retire the potential tying run on a flyout to end the ballgame.

Grant (2-3,2 R,2 RBI,2B,HR) and Barrow (2-3,3 RBI) were the only Kings players with 2 hits, while David Pridgen (2-4,1 R,1 RBI,2B) was the lone multi-hit NEK player. NEK defense turned 2 groundout doubleplays to help out starter Jeff Harris. The hard ground contributed to 6 errors from the 2 teams (NEK 2,Kings 4).

Game 2: Kings 8  (WP-Chuck Grant 13-7) NEK Entertainment 5 (LP-Jeff Harris 4-12)

Scoreless and hitless through 2 innings, the Kings bats came alive in innings 3-6 as the Kings swept the doubleheader with a 15-2 6 inning mercy rule game 2. 7 Kings batters had 2 or more hits, while the Kings defense was errorless and also turned 2 nice groundout doubleplays behind starter Chuck Grant. Grant meanwhile allowed just 7 hits and maintained command of his pitches in recording his 13th win of the season.
