2007 Pikesville Men's Softball League
Week 11:  June 17, 2007

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Stingers 10 (WP-Randy Rivera 3-3)  DC Dental  (LP-Lane Gordon 1-1)

DCD's first inning was a harbringer for the frustrating opener they were about to experience. Ben Gutman led off with a walk which was followed by singles from Kivi Gross and Dovid Flamm. But Randy Rivera was able to escape disaster by inducing 2 line outs and a strikeout. The DCD bats never really got going after that and the Dental Suppliers were stung (pun intended) by some clutch Stinger hitting and some sloppy DCD fielding. For the second time this season DCD made Rivera look like his closer namesake and really struggled to get much of anything going in what turned out to be a 10-5 defeat.

The day of fathers started with Randy Rivera taking the hill for the Stingers. He would pitch bases loaded and get some help from the rest of the Stingers to shut down DCD with runners left on all bases. After on inning of play, DCD and Stingers would be unable to plate runners from each team. With DCD able to plate one run in the t-2nd Stingers took advantage of the single plating by putting runs on the board. With bases loaded, Friedman sliced a cutting shot into right to plate three. T-3rd, DCD was able to plate 2 runs, but Tim Palo would give the Stingers a shot in the arm to place him on base with a double. Aaron Shiffrin continued his hitting streak batting in Palo with Shiffrin’s monster triple to the fence. After three, Stinger held the lead and would never relinquish it to DCD. The fourth was won by the Stingers bats and great base running plating three. In the b-5th, Stingers’ Beverly, Shiffrin and Rivera would work together batting to plate another run. Basoco was the standout in the t-6th with his in the park homer to plate another. This would insure taking the morning win.

***One bright spot for DC Dental was the PSL debut of Tom Prevas who went 2 for 3 with a triple and played some solid outfield.

***Flamm, in an effort to impress his (soon to be 20 year old) wife, also added the first of his two triples on the day.

Offensive Stars Game 1 :
K. Gross- 2 for 4 (2 singles)
D. Flamm- 3 for 4 (2 singles, triple, 2 Runs)
T Prevas- 2 for 3 (single, triple, 1 RBI)

Game 2:  DC Dental 11  (WP-Meir Zoller 5-1)  Stingers 1 (LP-Darron Tabatznik 2-6)

In the nightcap, DCD returned to form with strong pitching, fielding and timely hitting. Zoller held the Stingers to a lone run as he earned his fifth win of the season. Flamm tripled and drove in three in the cleanup spot. B. Gutman also had a big game behind Flamm in the order going 3 for 4 with a triple himself. Zoller went the distance in the 11-1 victory as DCD earned a split on the day.

Game two brought Darron Tabatznik to mound with Starobin playing catch with him. DCD would take the early lead plating three in the first. Stingers would take advantage of three solid bats in Jeb Buchman, Mike Basoco and Tim Palo. Murphy will send a deep fly into left for a SAC to plate one for the Stingers. Unfortunately sloppy play and pop-ups would get the best of the Stingers to allow DCD to plate seven and take the game

Game 2 Offensive Stars:

Flamm- 3 for 4 ( 2 singles, triple, 2 Runs, 3 RBIs)

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 8 (WP-Tom Paulshock 7-0) Sky & Sky Inc. 4 (LP-Larry Newman 4-6)

Oh what a few bad innings can do was the theme of the day for both teams.  Sky & Sky opened the door for The Cannons bats with 2 errors in the t-2nd which allowed 4 unearned runs to score and six runs in the inning.  The big shot was Hayes' 3B plating two rbi.  The Cannons gave 2 back with an error by their catcher as his throw to 2nd base wound up at the RCF fence.  Larry Newman and Tom Paulshock put it in cruise control each giving up only 2 more along the way for an 8-4 Cannons victory.  Sky & Sky actually had more runners reach base safely, but The Cannons took advantage of their scoring opportunities more effectively.  Glenn Ackman & Alex Newman each chipped in with two hits including a 2B, while Eric Gertner added 2 hits and 2 runs.

In game one, the Havana Club Cannons defeated Sky 8-4 behind Tom Paulshock.

Cannons offensive stars:
Jeff Kurland 3-3 2runs
Sean Warner 2-3 2rbi, run
Tim Grap 2-3 rbi, run
Tom Paulshock 1-2 rbi, run

Game 2:

Havana Club Cannons 13 (WP-Tom Paulshock 8-0) Sky & Sky Inc. 11 (LP-Zach Scherr 1-4)

With Mark Yokel traveling, the Cannons asked Tom Paulshock to throw both ends of the double dip. Tommy battled the heat and the Sky batters for seven innings en route to a miraculous 13-11 victory. Trailing 10-3 after 5 innings, the Cannons scored 4 in the sixth and cut the Sky lead to 10-7. After Sky plated an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, the Cannons came to bat in the top of the seventh needing 4 runs to tie. The Cannons scored six. The big moment came with the bases loaded and two out as Jeff Kurland lined a double to the wall in left. Chuck Easter followed with an rbi single and the Cannons took the field with a 13-11 lead. Paulshock shut the door in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.

The Cannons returned the favor of the big inning in game 2.  Going into the b-4th tied at 2-2, Sky & Sky used a leadoff error by the 3B and 3 walks to bat 13 in the frame and go up by a score of 10-2.  Resilient as always, The Cannons chipped away plating 1 in the 5-th.  Despite a 5-3 DP, Chuck Easter's bases loaded triple helped The Cannons close the gap to within 3 runs.  Sky & Sky added a run to their lead in the b-6th.  Tom Paulshock strode to the plate with 2 outs and an opportunity to tie the game with a single in the t-7th, but hit a week ground ball to the second baseman "to end the game".  However, the second baseman was not satisfied that The Cannons had enough of an opportunity to win the game, and was never able to get a handle on the ball to throw out the speedy Paulshock.  Two more hits, and three more runs later, Sky & Sky found themselves in a 2-run hole entering the b-7th.  Apparently out of guilt or exhaustion, Tom Paulshock tried his darndest to reward the genorousity of Sky's defensive lapse, and issued 3 walks to load the bases in the b-th, but Sky & Sky's bats could not manage to get any runs across the plate as they went down in stunning fashion 13-11.  Zack Scherr absorbed a very tough loss, and has to question what more he could do, or should have to do, to beat The Cannons.  Again Sky & Sky had more baserunners, but The Cannons produced more runs.  Glenn Ackman continued with his surging collection of hits adding 3 base knocks and a walk.

Cannons offensive stars:
Jeff Kurland 3-4 3runs, 4rbi
Chuck Easter 3-5 4rbi
Mike Steller 2-4 run, rbi
Lou Falcon 2-4 run, rbi
Steve Henneman 2-4 run
Johnny Edelman 3-3 2runs

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1: Northwest Corridor 7 (WP-Howard Goldberg 4-4)  Kings 5 (LP-Chuck Grant 9-6)

NWC scored 2 runs in each of the 2nd-4th inning and won 7-5 behind the strong pitching of Howard Goldberg. NWC got on the scoreboard first with 2 runs in t-2nd. 2 out RBI singles by Roy and Lee Pollak provided the early lead. The 2 run t-3rd was keyed by a Scott Sweren 3B. Trailing 4-0 into the b-3rd, Kings scored 3 runs with a Shilo Merwitz single, Jan Katzen bases-loaded walk, and Chuck Grant SF providing the 3 RBI's. The Kings left 2 runners in scoring position, and that would be the downfall of the Kings all game. An RBI single by Ted Winner helped NWC build a 6-3 lead in the t-4th. NWC added an insurance run on a 2 out infield error in t-7th. Trailing 7-3 into the b-7th, the Kings scored twice on RBI singles by Keegan Rettaliata and Nate Barker, but again stranded 2 runners in losing the opener 7-5. All tolled, the Kings left 13 runners on base over the 7 innings.

Game 2: Kings 15 (WP-Chuck Grant 10-6)  Northwest Corridor 1 (LP-Ted Winner 3-5)
5 Innings

The Kings bats finally awoke after a 2 game lapse as the top 4 batters in the line-up combined for 9 hits, 8 runs, and 9 RBI's with the Kings winning 15-1 in 4 innings. Kings scored 10 runs in t-1st and cruised to a victory in the night-cap. NWC starter Ted Winner left the game in the 5th inning with a back spasm. Chuck Grant enjoyed the runs support and pitched well, allowing just 5 hits in the run-shortened game.

Kings offensive stars:
Rob Ressin (2-3,4 R,2B,W)
Dave Sandler (4-4,2 R,1 RBI)
Shilo Merwitz (1-2,1 R,4 RBI,SF)
Jan Katzen (2-3,1 R,3 RBI,3B,SF)

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:
Game 1: NEK Entertainment 13 (WP-Jeff Harris 4-5)  L.O.F.T. 12 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-7)

L.O.F.T. was looking to keep the momentum from there win a week earlier against the Kings. NEK put up 2 runs in the top of the 2nd to take a 2-0
lead, but L.O.F.T. came right back behind the bat of new comer Mike Leizear with a 2 run 2 out double down the left field line followed by a 2 out base hit from Ryan Mente to bring in another run giving L.O.F.T. a 3-2 lead after 2. NEK was able to score 1 in the 3rd and 7 in the top of the 4th giving them a 10-3 lead. L.O.F.T. came back with 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th. L.O.F.T. was able to tie the game in the bottom of the 5th with 3 runs. L.O.F.T. took the lead in the bottom of the 6th with a 2 RBI sac fly from Brandon Mabry. L.O.F.T. however was unable to hang on the top of the 7th as NEK pushed across 3 and L.O.F.T. went 1-2-3 in bottom of 7th to lose their 3rd 1 run game to NEK this season.

Game 2:
L.O.F.T. 10  (WP-Andy Peksa 4-5)  NEK Entertainment  8 (LP-Jeff Harris 4-6)

Andy Peksa took the mound in game 2 for L.O.F.T. having won 2 of his last 3 starts. L.O.F.T. came out of the gates quickly putting up 3 runs in the top of the 1st. In the top of the 2nd the first 2 hitters got singles and then Ryan Mente was able to hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield to move both runners into scoring postion and Mike Bowen delivered a 2 run double on the very next pitch. Andy Peksa drove in another run and Kory Rosenberg drove in 2 more to extend L.O.F.T.'s lead to 8-1 after 2 innings. NEK scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd and 1 more in the bottom of the 4th to cut the lead to 8-6 after 4. L.O.F.T. was able to score 1 in the top of the 5th, but NEK came right back and scored 1 of their own in the 5th to make it 9-7 after 5. Andy Peksa then took himself off the pitchers mound after 5 innings pitched being exhausted from the heat and only 4 hours of sleep. Kory Rosenberg came in the bottom of the 6th to pitch, looking for the save, with L.O.F.T. leading 10-7. Kory was able to hold NEK to 1 run in the bottom of the 6th after getting into some early trouble in the inning. L.O.F.T. went 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th. L.O.F.T. looked to end their 3 game 1 run losing streak to NEK this season. Kory Rosenberg was able to get the first 2 hitters to fly out, but NEK had the top of their order up and NEK's lead off hitter ripped a ground ball down the 1st base line, but Andy Peksa snagged it and with the speed of the batter dove and taged 1st base before the runner got there to end the game.
