2007 Pikesville Men's Softball League
Week 12:  June 24, 2007

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Stingers 10 (WP-Darron Tabatznik 3-6) NEK Entertainment  7 (LP-Dave Pridgen 2-5)

Stingers opened the day with bats ready to go. It was not until Mike Beverly, batting in the three spot slammed an in-the-park home run into NEK’s center field to plate one. NEK could not do much until the t-2nd plating two runs from off throws by Stingers. In the b-3rd, Tim Palo kept his streak alive with a single down the line to put a runner on the bags. A short time later, Aaron Shiffrin took control of his hot bat to double. With runners on the bags, Matt Friedman slapped a double into right to plate two for the Stingers. Darron Tabatznik would control the bats of NEK along with speed in the outfield and solid throws to gun down NEK for his win.

Game 2:  Stingers 10 (WP-Scott Leder 2-0) NEK Entertainment  7 (LP-Jeff Harris 4-7)

Game two brought some passion back from NEK as the b-1st brought them a four run inning. After Scott Leder calmed down after the first two innings, Stingers woke up the bats and clawed back into the game in the t-2nd, when Palo again slammed a liner to plate Mike Basoco followed by Sean Murphy’s RBI single. NEK would come back and add two more in the b-3rd. In the t-4th, Stingers got the ball game going as they got things going from Shiffrin and Friedman through continuous solid hitting to put them on bags with their timely hitting again. Lee Densky got into the batting groove from his double header day behind the plate to SAC and plate another for Stingers. James Engler would be driven in by a blast to the fence from Mike McGee and the Stingers would tie the game at six all after four innings of play. NEK would squeak another run in in the b-5th, but the Stingers would close the day with a sweep in the t-7th as the bottom of their line-up came alive to plate four more for the Stingers and take the day.

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 9 (WP-Larry Newman 5-6) Northwest Corridor 4 (LP-Howard Goldberg 4-5)

The last bit of recruiting efforts have paid handsome dividends and turned around the fortunes of the once cellar-dwelling Sky & Sky softball franchise.  What looked to be a defensive battle through the first few frames was abruptly ended by Chris Canosa's solo shot to dead CF, while Chris's teammates added one more in the inning for the early lead.  Sky & Sky battled back with 6 runs and played solid defense to back up Larry Newman's 6-hitter the rest of the way.  A few more runs were traded along the way, but NWC failed to capitalize on several opportunities and could never close the gap in a  9-4 loss.  Of note was the ending of a hitting streak lasting several seasons by NWC's Scott Sweren, accompanied by a tip of the cap, (and a wink) from your friends on Sky & Sky's roster.

Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc. 15 (WP-Zach Scherr 2-4) Northwest Corridor 6 (LP-Ted Winner 3-6)

The second game was never really in doubt as the Sky & Sky bats banged out 18 hits in the nightcap.  Sky & Sky Pitcher Zach Scherr spread out 11 hits effectively in the 16-6 contest.  Sky & Sky was glad to welcome back Paul Hayes's bat which heeded the wake up call fromroom service after hitting the snooze button much of the season.  Who knows...perhaps a hitting streak of his own is soon to follow.

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1: DC Dental 15 (WP-Lane Gordon 2-1)  LOFT 0 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-8) (4 Innings)

Just a week after a disappointing opening loss to the Stingers, D.C. Dental showed some fire and intensity right out of the gate. After holding LOFT scoreless in the top of the first, DCD batted around and brought 7 men to the plate. From there, DCD cruised to a 15-0 victory with some patience, timely hitting, and solid defense. Lane Gordon went the distance earning a complete game shutout and capping off his flawless game with a 3 for 3 performance at the plate.

* Despite the score, the contest was not lacking drama. The excitement came in the third inning as LOFT pitcher Kory Rosenberg had a meltdown on the mound as he removed his neon yellow mouth guard during a profanity laden tirade with the umpire over balls and strikes. Rosenberg was relieved in the mercy-rule shortened game by Andy Peksa.

* Part time player Yoni "Larry Sheets" Rosenblatt hit the first of his two long homeruns on the day in the fourth. Rosenblatt has appeared in 4 games and has 4 round-trippers. They all have come against the LOFT

Game 2: DC Dental 9 (WP-Lane Gordon 3-1)  LOFT (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-9)

After getting shut out in game 1 L.O.F.T. looked to rebound in game 2. There wasn't much excitement for L.O.F.T. once again in game 2 as they found themselves down 9-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning. L.O.F.T. was able to scratch across 3 runs highlighted by a JC Beattie RBI Triple followed up by a Michael Bowen RBI single to get L.O.F.T. on the scoreboard for the first time all day. In the bottom of the 7th Pete Sclafani hit a solo homerun over the left field wall, however L.O.F.T. was unable to get anything else going in the bottom of the 7th and lost game 2 9-4.

DCD capped off the sweep with a 9-4 win in the finale. Gordon again went the distance earning his second victory of the day and Rosenblatt was just a triple short of the cycle. Joe Bako Rombro also pounded 3 hits in the victory. Chaim Finkelstein making his DCD debut, flashed some leather on a short pop to right field in the final inning. The sweep put the Dental Suppliers in sole possession of first place and the franchise is now a record high 6 games over .500.

Game 2 Offensive Stars for DCD:
Rombro- 3 for 4 (3 singles, 1 Run)
Rosenblatt- 3 for 3 (single, double, HR, 2 Runs, 1 RBI)

- Pete Sclafani hit the first ever over the wall homerun in L.O.F.T. team history.

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 10 (WP-Mark Yokel 9-0) Kings 5 (LP-Dan Frignito 0-1)

The Cannons, trailing 3-1 into the bottom of the 4th inning, exploded for 5 runs in the b-4th and 4 more runs in b-5th in defeating the Kings 10-5 in the opener. With Kings regular starter Chuck Grant in Nevada for a bowling tournament, Dan Frignito made the 2 hour drive down from West Chester/Philadelphia area on Sunday morning to take the hill. Frignito did his job on the mound in keeping the Kings in the game, but the Kings did not really want to get into an offensive battle against the undefeated Cannons.

Kings offensive stars:
Dan Frignito (2-3,2 R)
Keegan Rettaliata (2-3,2 RBI)
Ben Petasky (3-3,1 R,3B)
Mike Herr (2-3)

Cannons offensive stars:
Steve Henneman (2-3,1 RBI,W)
Johnny Edelman (2-3,1 R)
Steve Hayes (2-3,1 R,2 RBI,2B)
Mark Yokel (1-3,1 R,2 RBI)

Game 2:Kings 12
(WP-Dan Frignito 1-1)  Havana Club Cannons 10 (LP-Tom Paulshock 8-1)

The Kings handed the Cannons their first loss of the season, 12-10 in the nightcap. With the Kings offense struggling since LF Alan Varhaftik went out of the line-up in late May with an ankle injury, Varhaftik returned to the line-up, heavily taped up and his presence in the middle of the line-up solidified the Kings batting order. The Kings were 2-5 in the absence of Varhaftik.

The Kings jumped out to a 7-0 lead in b-1st as the Kings sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning. After Kenny Salzman reached base to start the game on an infield error, Cannons starter Tom Paulshock struggled with his control, walking the next 3 batters. With the table set, RBI singles by Jan Katzen, Nate Barker, Rob Barrow, and 2 RBI 2B by Ben Petasky contributed to the Kings 7-0 lead. The lead was short-lived as the Cannons scored 7 runs in t-2nd. Consecutive singles by Mike Steller, Evan Kreitzer, Johnny Edelman, Mike Ginsberg (RBI), Steve Hayes, and Dan Kassel started the innings. With the bases loaded an 0 outs, the Kings came close to escaping with a 3 run inning as game 2 starter Dan Frignito retired the next 2 batters, keeping the bases loaded. However, Steve Henneman hit a 2 RBI single and Tim Grap followed with the game tying 2 RBI single. Cannons went ahead 8-7 in t-4th on a Dan Kassel RBI single. In b-4th, Rob Barrow and Ben Petasky singled to lead off the Kings inning. Following 2 ground outs, Dave Sandler drew a walk to load bases. Shilo Merwitz singled through the SS hold scoring 2 Kings runs and Dan Frignito followed with an RBI single that led to an additional run on a mishandling of a throw to home plate. The Kings held an 11-8 lead after the 4th. The Kings added an insurance run in b-5th as Varhaftik walked to start inning, Keegan Rettaliata singled, and Nate Barker plated Varhaftik with an RBI single.

Although Frignito was pitching well and the Kings were happy with a 12-8 lead, the Cannons fought back in t-7th. Mike Ginsberg opened the inning with a 1B and scored on Steve Hayes' RBI 2B. Frignito was able to retire the next 2 Cannons batters before Mark Yokel hit a pinch-hit RBI single. Steve Henneman came to the plate as the potential tie run, but Frignito was able to coax a flyout to LCF to end the game and to give the Cannons their first loss of 2007.

Kings offensive stars:
Shilo Merwitz (2-3,1 R,2 RBI,W)
Dan Frignito (1-3,1 R,2 RBI,W)
Jan Katzen (2-4,1 R,1 RBI)
Nate Barker (2-3,1 R,2 RBI)
Rob Barrow (2-3,1 R,1 RBI)
Ben Petasky (2-3,2 RBI,2B,K)

Cannons offensive stars included:
