2007 Pikesville Men's Softball League
Week 7:  May 20, 2007

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:
Game 1: Havana Club Cannons 25 (WP-Mark Yokel 6-0)  DC Dental 13 (LP-Tzvi Friedman 3-4)

Game 1 started out very promising for the streaking DC Dental Squad. Beginning with a leadoff triple by Lazerow, DCD opened the double header with a four run first. However, with starter Tzvi Friedman late to the game on Diaper Duty, the Cannons answered with 5 runs off of emergency starter Dave Finkelstein in his first appearance on the mound in over a year. The teams see-sawed back in forth and were deadlocked at 12 in the middle of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, however, with one run in and 2 away, the Cannons exploded for an unprecedented two-out, ten run rally to blow the game open. From there the Cannons cruised to a 25-13 victory.

DCD Offensive Stars Game 1:
Lazerow- 2 for 4 (Triple, Double) 2 R,
Orshan- 3 for 3 (3 singles) 2 RBI
B. Gutman- 2 for 4 (2 singles) 1 R
D. Gutman- 2 for 4 (single, triple) 4 RBI, 2 R
Friedman- 2 for 2 (single, double, sac fly) 3 RBI

Game 2:  Havana Club Cannons 10 (WP-Tom Paulshock 4-0)  DC Dental 4 (LP-Meir Zoller 2-1)

The Cannons completed the sweep with a 10-4 victory in the nightcap. Paulshock settled down after giving up 2 in the first and the Cannons found enough offense to finish off the dental suppliers. Zoller pitched 7 solid innings in defeat. The DCD highlight of game 2 was the Jack Cust-like fall and crawl to first by David Ziffer. Ziffer stumbled to the ground about halfway up the line on a ball hit to the left side of the infield, thinking that he was almost there he began to crawl to first. Ultimately he stood up and ran safely to first on the booted ball. But his antics left the crowd, including David's father Lawrence Ziffer, thoroughly entertained.

DCD Offensive Stars Game 2:

B. Gutman- 2 for 3 (2 singles)
Flamm- 1 for 3 (double) 2 RBI

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:
Game 1: Kings 12 (WP-Chuck Grant 8-1) NEK Entertainment 0 (LP-David Pridgen 2-2)  5 Innings

Chuck Grant tossed a 6 hitter and his 2nd shutout of the season as the Kings took the opener 12-0 in 5 innings. After a scoreless 1st inning, Kings scored 4 runs on 5 hits in b-2nd. Chuck Grant (SF), Jan Katzen (1B), and Nate Barker (2B) all had 1 RBI in the inning. Kings put the game out of reach with a 5 run b-3rd. NEK starter David Pridgen yielded 4 walks and 4 hits in the inning, with key hits by Shilo Merwitz (2 RBI 1B), Chuck Grant (RBI 1B), and Alan Varhaftik (RBI 1B). Two more Kings runs in b-4th gave the Kings an 11-0 lead. In b-5th, Keegan Rettaliata singled to start inning, was advanced to second base on a Jan Katzen walk, moved to thirdbase on a flyout, and scored the game ending run on a Troy Hendricks SF.

Kings offensive leaders in game 1:
Jan Katzen (2-2,1 R,1 RBI,2B,2 W)
Shilo Merwitz (3-3,2 R,3 RBI,2B)
Alan Varhaftik (2-3,1 R,1 RBI)
Chuck Grant (1-1,1 R,2 RBI,W,SF)

For NEK:
James (2-2)

Game 2: NEK Entertainment 6 (WP-Jeff Harris 3-3)  Kings 3 (LP-Chuck Grant 8-2)

A pitcher's duel followed in game 2 as Jeff Harris kept the Kings bats quiet with an NEK 6-3 victory. Harris limited the Kings offense to just 6 hits and 4 walks. Meanwhile Chuck Grant pitched well, but a fly ball lost in the sun in LCF led to a 4 run NEK 4th inning.

Rashaad Johnson led off b-1st with a 1B and scored on Jason Gardener's 2 out RBI 2B. With a 1-0 NEK lead into b-4th, David Pridgen drew a 1 out walk. Gardener followed with a single, sending Pridgen to third base. Marqui Garrett then hit a flyball to deep LCF that appeared to be tracked by Kings LCF Nate Barker, but the sun caused Barker to lose sight of the ball at the last second and Garrett's ball fell in for a 2 RBI 3B. Jeff Harris helped his own cause with an RBI 3B and Harris scored on Kevin Purnell's RBI single. NEK had a 5-0 lead after the 4th inning. Kings seemed to get back into game with a t-5th rally. 1 out singles by Dave Sandler and Shilo Merwitz were followed by a walk to Chuck Grant. Alan Varhaftik hit a 2 RBI single and Jan Katzen hit an RBI 2B, but the Kings left 2 runners in scoring position and trailed 5-3 after 5 innings. NEK got an insurance run when singles by Garrett, Purnell, and Mannah (RBI) put NEK up 6-3. The Kings managed to get 2 runners on base with walks to Kenny Salzman and Chuck Grant in t-7th, but Harris got Alan Varhaftik to flyout to LF to end the game. The Kings were at a distinct disadvantage in the t-7th as the Kings had lost Keegan Rettaliata to a 5th inning ejection and did not have an extra player to put into Rettaliata's spot in the batting order. Varhaftik was forced to try for a homerun as Rettaliata's spot in the order was due up next.

No Kings batter had more than 1 hit, while Rashaad Johnson (2-3,1 R), Jason Gardener (2-3,1 R,1 RBI,2B), Jeff Harris (2-3,1 R,1 RBI,3B), Kevin Purnell (2-3,1 RBI), and Mannah (2-3,1 RBI) each received multi-hit status in game 2. NEK defense was also solid in game 2, playing errorless ball. The Kings for their part, just had 1 charged error.

Next up for the Kings, after the Memorial Day Weekend Holiday, is a rematch of the 2006 Finals with the Havana Club Cannons.

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:
Game 1: Northwest Corridor 8 (WP-Ted Winner 3-2)  Stingers 1 (LP-Randy Rivera 2-2)

Ted went out in the first game for an injured Goldberg and recorded an easy 3 outs. The NWC hitters were shut down in the 1st but bounced back in the 2nd inning scoring 3 runs. Mike Silverman and Lee Pollak smashed consecutive singles and Winner drove them both home smashing a triple to rightfield. Matt Bell followed with a sac fly to center and that would be all of the runs that Winner would really need. He faced 26 batters in 7 innings allowing just 4 base hits and 1 walk. he struck out 1 and the Stingers never had a solid hit. The lone Stinger run scored after a Mike Bosoco fly ball to rightfield was lost in the sun for a 3 base error. NWC would add 1 run in the 5th and 4 more in the 6th to close things out. Chris Canosa led off with a 3b and was followed by 3 straight base hits from Joe Campanella, Mike Silverman and Lee Pollak. Ted Winner then followed with a 2 base sac fly to give him 4rbi in the game. NWC-8 Stingers-1.

Stingers and NWC fought through the first two innings, but NWC prevailed in runs.  In the t-4th, Mike Basoco wheeled out an in-the-park homerun over the right outfielders of NWC to plate the Stingers sole run.  Stingers would try again to give some run support to another great job on the hill from Randy Rivera, but would not be able to  get much of a string of 1-2 hits against Ted Winner.

NWC Hitting Stars:
Mike Silverman 3-3 2r
Lee Pollak 3-3 2r
Ted Winner 1-2 R 4rbi 3b sacfly
Joe Campanella 2-3 r rbi

Game 2: Northwest Corridor 13 (WP-Howard Goldberg 3-2)  Stingers 5 (LP-Randy Rivera 2-3)

Started off with nothing happening for both teams in the 1st. The Stingers started the 2nd with 2 base hits but were unable to get the ball out of the infield and NWC escaped the inning with 0 runs allowed. Mike Silverman scored on a Matt Bell sac fly in the 2nd and NWC would pile on 3 more runs in the 3rd. Scott Sweren and Dave Stein had back to back line drive hits and Joe Campanella had an rbi double. NWC would widen their lead with 2 more in the 4th and 4 more runs in the 5th inning. Brad Rosenberg doubled with two outs in the 4th and Joey liner followed with a two out triple. NWC's 4 run 5th was powered by rbi doubles from Aaron Birenbaum and Brad Rosenberg. Ted Winner was pretty comfortable again in game 2 coasting through the first 3 innings. The Stingers scored twice in the 4th inning and 3 more times in the 6th. Winner closed things out in the 7th completing the 2 game sweep.

Stingers kept NWC to only 1 run in two innings due to the pitching and tracking from Tim Palo and the Stingers outfielders.  NWC would plate three in the t-3rd and again in the t-5th two more, but the Stringers fought back with two runs of their own with timely hitting from Jeb Buchman, Tim Palo, Mike Beverly’s walk, along with an error by the Shortstop f NWC and a SAC from Bad Starobin. Unfortunately the Stingers allowed NWC to score four more in the t-5th, but in the b-6th with runners on 1st and 2nd, Mike Beverly connected on his season first homerun over the left center fence to plate three.  Unfortunately, this is all that the Stingers’ bats would be able to produce with and excellent pitching day from Randy Rivera only walking one batter in two games.

Hitting Stars For NWC:
Scott Sweren, Joey Liner, Mike Silverman, Ted Winner and Brad Rosenberg all had 3 hit games
Joe Campanella had 2 multi-hit games

Other NWC Notes:
Scott Sweren extended his team leading hitting streak to 32 games
Chris Canosa played flawless defense

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:
Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 20 (WP-Larry Newman 1-5)  L.O.F.T. 15 (LP-Kory Rosenberg 0-4)

L.O.F.T. came out looking for back to back wins for the first time in their short team history. After 1 inning the game was close with Sky and Sky leading 2-1. Sky and Sky scored 5 in top of 2nd, but L.O.F.T. was able to battle back and score 5 of their own started by a 2 RBI double off the wall by Andy Peksa, followed by a 2 RBI inside the park Home Run by Mike Bowen to cut the lead to 7-6. L.O.F.T. was held scoreless over the next 2 innings and Sky and Sky stretched the lead to 12-6, but L.O.F.T. was able to score 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th highlighted by a Dan Mabry RBI triple and a Ryan Mente 2 RBI sac fly. Sky and Sky came back with 3 in top of 6th, but L.O.F.T. was able to score 4 more runs in the bottom of the 6th behind a 2 RBI double by Kory Rosenberg which cut the lead to 15-14. Sky and Sky was able to put up 5 insurance runs in the top of the 7th and L.O.F.T. was only able to muster up 1 more run in the bottom of the 7th. The game ended up being a high scoring affair that lasted 2:15.

As indicated by the 20-15 final score, pitching and defense were not on display in this match-up of last place teams. In fact, both teams seemed to be in a giving mood. They gave away runs, leads and apparently a willingness to keep each other in the contest. The 5 run 2nd and 7th innings proved to be the difference as Larry Newman earned his first victory of the season over Kory Rosenberg. Hitting stars should probably give way to defensive ineptitude, but the following people had a decent game at the plate. Brian Sky led the way going 4-4(2 2B, BB, 4 runs, 5rbi), Zach Scherr was 2-3,2 BB, 4 runs, Zach Price (4-5, 3rbi, 3runs), and Mike Rotts added 3 hits and 4 rbi.

Offensive Stars for LOFT:
Dan Mabry: 5-5; 3B, 2B, 3 1B, 3 RBI, 2 R
Brandon Mabry: 4-5; 2 2B, 2 1B, 2 RBI, 2 R
Mike Bowen: 4-5; HR, 2B, 2 1B, 2 RBI, 4 R
Andy Peksa: 2-4; 2B, 1B, 2 RBI, R

Game 2: L.O.F.T. 12  (WP-Andy Peksa 2-4)  Sky & Sky Inc. 7 (LP-Zach Scherr 0-3)

The second game also was a 5-run contest and a 1 run affair going into the last inning. That is until LOFT found holes in the Sky & Sky OF. The aforementioned outfield turned several base hits into "scoring efforts on errors" allowing LOFT to coast to a 12-7 victory as Andy Peksa beat Zach Scherr. This game did however feature the first 1000 pound infield in 5 seasons in PMS. The likes of Friedman(3B), Gertner (SS), Sky(2B) and Hayes(1B) truly anchored the Sky & Sky defense and scarfed up meekly hit balls like Big Macs. Of course, the well hit shots went straight to the outfield. This stellar assemblage of infielders has never been witnessed before, and will most assuredly never be seen again. Injuries, final exams, bad backs, and emergency surgeries all combined to leave Sky & Sky in the precarious position in which it now finds itself. For those of you who think we are done...just wait till June.

Andy Peksa took the mound in game 2 for L.O.F.T. coming off his first win of the year the week prior. L.O.F.T. quickly jumped ahead scoring 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning behind 4 straight RBI hits by Dan Mabry, Andy Peksa, Kory Rosenberg and Adam Crothers. Sky and Sky battled back and cut the lead to 5-3 after 2 innings. The 3rd inning was scoreless for both teams, but in the bottom of the 4th Sky and Sky scored 4 runs to take its first lead of the game 7-5. L.O.F.T. was able to get 1 back in the top of 5th and then regained the lead in the top of the 6th off a RBI triple by Brett Henry, followed by a RBI single by Pete Sclafani to give L.O.F.T. a 8-7 lead. Andy Peksa was able to come back out with the lead and shut down Sky and Sky holding them scoreless in the bottom of the 6th. This allowed L.O.F.T. to get back to the plate and add on 4 insurance runs in the top of the 7th highlighted by Adam Crothers 2 RBI inside the park Home Run. The insurance runs were not needed however as Peksa had his 3rd consecutive scoreless inning in the bottom of the 7th to give L.O.F.T. their 2nd victory of the year and 2nd straight split.

Offensive Stars for LOFT:
Dan Mabry: 4-4; 3 2B, 1B, 3 RBI, 2 R
Brandon Mabry: 3-4; 3B, 2 1B, 2 R
Adam Crothers: 1-2; HR, Sac Fly, BB, 3 RBI, 2 R
Kory Rosenberg: 2-4; 3B, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R
Brett Henry: 3-4; 3B, 2 1B, RBI, R
Andy Peksa: 2-3; 2 1B, Sac Fly, 2 RBI, R

L.O.F.T. Post Game Notes:
- Dan Mabry finished the day 9-9 with a 1.445 slugging percentage with 4 runs and 6 RBI's
- Brett Henry turned in one of his better hitting day's less then 9 hours after passing out at the Ritz
- Andy Peksa found some power today putting 2 balls off the wall, he isn't sure where the power came from, but some may say it was the Bubble Bee Fish Oil
