Detour Dave Sandler and Orioles Hall of
Famer #1 Al Bumbry Recognized in Pre-Game Ceremonies
Dave Sandler
did have a procedure this week to correct a heart rhythm problem. He was
released from the hospital earlier this week. Dave will remain on the
sidelines for the remainder of the softball season-- he has been
promoted to Kings assistant scorekeeper. Orioles Hall of Famer and 1973
American League Rookie of the Year Al Bumbry was honored prior to
today's doubleheader. Al participated in an opening game ceremony that
included tossing out the first pitch to Detour Dave. Al walked around to
all 4 fields during the morning and seemed to be pondering a comeback,
albeit in the Pikesville Men's Softball League.
In game action, LOFT stunned AR Bodies with a walk off homerun in the
bottom of the 7th inning of game 1 and completed a sweep over the Bodies
with a win in game 2.. The Cannons broke open a close game 1 against Sky
with a 6 run 6th inning and kept the bats going in game 2, completing a
sweep. The Kings were missing 7 regulars, but got help from 2 of the
varsity baseball players from Owings Mills High School, along with their
coach. The Kings were able to take both games against the Stingers. In
the only split on the day, NWC pounded NEK/ESB Bombers in game 1, but
were humbled by an NEK/ESB win in the nightcap.

Game 1: Kings 10 (WP-Mike Herr 3-0) Stingers 7 (LP-Larry
Newman 0-4)
The Stingers and Kings played an extremely close game. While the Kings took a
2-0 lead in t-1st, they were unable to establish any lead more than 3 runs thru
the first 5 innings. A 5 run t-6th lead gave the Kings their biggest lead of
game 1 10-4, and the Kings held on to win the opener 10-7.
The Kings took a 2-0 lead in t-1st on 1 out 2B by Jan Katzen, RBI 3B by Jeff
Slutzker, and SF by Alan Varhaftik. Jeb Buchman started the Stingers b-1st with
a single and he scored the Stingers lone run in the inning on 1 out singles by
Stuart Sheridan and Mike Randall (RBI). The Kings and Stingers matched solo runs
in the 2nd inning. Mike Herr scored for the Kings when Brooks Sandler's 2 out
grounder was mishandled by the Stingers infield. In b-2nd, Tim Palo sinking
liner to RF became a 3B to start b-2nd. Palo scored on James Engler's RBI
groundout to SS.
Jeff Slutzker homered with 1 out in t-3rd to extend the Kings lead 4-2. The
Stingers threatened in b-3rd loading the baes on 1 out singles by Buchman, Brett
Eisenberg, and Sheridan. However Kings SS Jan Katzen bailed out starting pitcher
Mike Herr, stabbing 2 hard hit lineouts and stranding the bases loaded for the
Stingers.
Brooks Sandler led of the Kings t-5th with his first career Kings extra basehit--
a 3B to RF. Sandler scored on a SF by Troy Hendricks. In b-5th, a 1B by Mike
Beverly, RBI 3B by Larry Newman, and RBI 1B by Buchman pulled the Stingers to
within 5-4.
The Kings got 5 insurance runs in t-6th. Keegan Rettaliata launched a 3B to LF.
Tom Blumenauer, making his Kings debut brought home Rettaliata with an RBI 1B.
Following a 1B by Chuck Grant, Blumenauer scored on Mike Herr's RBI fielder's
choice groundout to SS. Following a 2 out infield error allowing Brooks Sandler
to reach, 2 out hits by Hendricks (RBI 2B) and Jan Katzen (2 RBI 1B) gave the
Kings a 10-5 lead.
The Stingers continued to battle in their half of the inning. 1 outs consecutive
singles by Aaron Shifrin, Dominic J., and Tim Palo again loaded the bases. This
time a hit the Stingers did not waste a 1 out bases loaded situation as James
Engler delivered a 2 RBI 1B and Mike Beverly followed with an RBI fielder's
choice groundout. Trailing 10-7 into their final at bat, the Stingers did get
Aaron Woody (1B) and Jebb Buchman (E4) reaching base with 0 outs. Mike Herr was
able to get the next 3 hitters on a flyout, swinging strikeout, and flyout to
close out the game.
With the momentum building from week 2,
the Stings faced a tough opponent in the Kings. The Kings batted first scoring
two off a double, triple, SAC fly combination which the Stingers would answer
with one of their own scoring lead-off hitter Buchman. The Kings would score one
in the top of the second to hold a lead of 3-1. Palo started the second with a
leadoff triple and would be brought in by Engler on a fielder's choice. The
third inning the Stingers threatened with bases loaded but would fall short
lining out to the shortstop in back-to-back at bats. The game remained close
heading into the bottom of the fifth with a score 5-2. The Stingers made a
charge in the fifth off a Nemo triple brining in a run and a Buchman single to
score two for the inning brining the Stingers within one. The Kings would score
five runs in the top of the sixth off poor defensive plays by the Stingers which
would eventually cost them the game. In the bottom of the sixth the Stingers
would score four times. Shifrin, Johnson, and Palo would load up the bases and
Engler hit a liner up the middle to score two followed by a Beverly fielder's
choice to score a third. The Stingers were within three runs with the Kings
coming up in the top of the seventh. Nemo would make quick work of the Kings off
two pop-outs and a grounder to first. The Stingers, only down three come to the
plate in the bottom of the seventh and come out strong off a single by Woodfolk
and a ROE by Buchman. With two on and no outs the Stingers could see victory in
sight but would not capitalize on the opportunity. A pop-out, an untimely
strike-out, and another pop-out would end the Stingers chances in game one
losing 10-7 to the Kings. The Stingers left 9 men on base failing to capitalize
on the opportunities and would have to look to game two.
Stingers offensive leaders for game 1:
Jebb Buchman (3-4,1 R,1 RBI)
Brett Eisenberg (2-4)
Stuart Sheridan (2-4,K)
Tim Palo (2-3,2 R,3B)
James Engler (1-3,3 RBI)
Kings offensive leaders in game 1:
Jan Katzen (2-4,1 R,2 RBI,2B)
Jeff Slutzker (2-3,2 R,2 RBI,3B,HR,W)
Keegan Rettaliata (2-4,1 R,3B,K)
Mike Herr (2-3,2 R,1 RBI,2B)
Game 2:
Kings 13 (WP-Chuck Grant 3-0) Stingers 4 (LP-Larry
Newman 0-5)
Game two the Stingers came to bat first and started off right scoring two off a Sheridan single (who was thrown out at second on a poor call by the umpire). The Kings answered in the bottom scoring three of their own off an in-the-park homerun and another three in the bottom of the second. The Stingers bats stayed quiet scoring only two more runs on the day while their defense remained tough throughout the day. Eisenberg had two remarkable catches in Left Center robbing the Kings of some extra base hits. The bottom of the sixth would be the end for the Stingers. A couple singles, fielding mistakes, and a double would result in four runs from the Kings making the score 13-4 which would be the final. A good effort by the Stingers but they fell short this week. We are looking forward to a matchup with Northwest Corridor in Week 4.
The Kings sent Chuck Grant to the mound for the nightcap and he limited the Stingers to just 6 hits and 0 walks, allowing the Kings to take game 2, 13-4. The Kings defense behind Grant was subpar as they committed an uncharacteristic 6 infield errors.
In t-1st, Jeb Buchman remained hot and singled to start the game. Tim Palo reached on an error to SS. With runners on 1st and 2nd base and 1 out, Stuart Sheridan knocked in Buchman, with Palo scoring while the Kings were tagging out Sheridan on the base path. The Stingers lead was short-lived as the Stingers starter Larry Newman battled balls from other fields coming onto field 1. The distracted Newman walked Troy Hendricks and Jan Katzen to lead off the Kings b-1st. With 2 outs, Keegan Rettaliata hit a rare 3 RBI inside-the-park HR, giving the Kings a 3-2 lead.
In b-2nd, the Kings loaded the bases on singles by Grant and Justin Cohen, along with a walk to Brooks Sandler. Troy Hendricks was given a 2nd life when his foul popup was dropped. Hendricks took advantage of the new life with a 2 RBI 1B. 1 out later, Jeff Slutzker also hit a 2 RBI 1B, extending the Kings lead 7-2.
In t-4th, Stuart Sheridan reached on a 1 out infield error. Mike Randall cashed in Sheridan with an RBI 1B. 2 infield errors by the Kings in t-5th led to another run by the Stingers, making the score 7-4. The damage could have been worse when with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd base, Tim Palo hit a hard grounder thru the pitcher's box. Grant got a glove on the ball, knocking it between the mound and 2nd base. With no time to even bare hand the ball and make a toss to 2nd base for a forceout, Grant kicked the ball to SS Jan Katzen covering 2nd base for the forceout, in a legal play very rarely ever seen successfully made.
Grant continued to shine on both sides of the field as he delivered a clutch 2 out 2 RBI 2B in b-5th, putting the Kings more comfortably ahead 9-4. The Kings added 4 more runs in b-6th, all coming with 2 outs. The key hits were Jeff Slutzker's RBI 1B and Keegan Rettaliata's 3 RBI 2B. Final score in game 2 in favor of the Kings was 13-4.
Stingers multi-hit players:
Stuart Sheridan (2-3,1 R,2 RBI, reached on error)
Dominic J (2-3)

Jeff Slutzker (2-4,2 R,3 RBI, reached on error)
Keegan Rettaliata (2-4,2 R,6 RBI,2B,HR)

Game 2 notes:
Stingers LCF Brett Eisenberg was spectacular in the field, robbing several of the Kings batters of extra base hits.
Kings notes:
The Kings were without 7 players from their fully returning team of 14 players who qualified for last year's Playoffs. Missing to participate in a Westminster area softball tournament were SS Shilo Merwitz, 2B Kenny Salzman, and LCF Arin Gelletly. The Kings were missing due to health related issues OF Dave Sandler (heart) and OF Koby Sarubin (mononucleosis). 1B Rob Barrow was vacationing somewhere, while Scott Katzen was out-of-town at a kid's birthday party.
The Kings raided the Owings Mills High School varsity baseball team to fill out their roster for today's game. Senior Justin Cohen anchored the Kings infield at 3B, while Junior Brooks Sandler caught game 1 and played 2B in game 2. The Kings also brought out the varsity coach, Tom Blumenauer to solidify the Kings in RCF. The 3 players combined for 5 hits in the doubleheader.
Chuck Grant scored his 300th lifetime Kings run in game 2.
Jan Katzen reached the 200th game milestone last week against the Cannons. Game 1: Cannons 16 (WP-Mark Yokel 1-1) Sky & Sky Inc.
9 (LP-Alex Newman 1-2)
Week 3 saw the Cannons match-up with Sky & Sky. Game one featured Mark Yokel against Alex Newman. Sky took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a sun aided lead off home run. In the bottom of the first the Cannons jumped on Newman from the start. Kurland answered the Sky HR with a lead off home run of his own down the left field line. An Easter single, a Dubansky double and a Schwartzberg walk loaded the bases with one out. After a Steve Hayes BB scored the 2nd run of the inning, Johnny Edelman doubled in 2. Evan Kreitzer than tripled in two more. Lee Densky hit a SAC Fly to score Kreitzer to plate the 7th run of the inning. Sky closed it to 10-8 after 5 innings of play. They made it 10-9 after the top of the 6th. The Cannons then scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th to slam the door. The inning was highlighted by a mammoth 2 run HR by jason Schwartzberg and a 2 run triple by Edelman. Final score Cannons 16 Sky 9. Mark Yokel got his first win of the season and first since 2008.
Sky got off to a good start
with a leadoff homerun by Andrew VanLandingham. The Cannons came right
back to take the lead and never let go. Sky tried to make a game of it but
in the bottom of the 6th the Cannons blew it wide open.
Game 1 Cannons hitting stars:
Jeff Kurland, Chuck Easter, Mike Dubansky, Jason Schwartzberg, Steve Hayes and
Johnny Edelman were all 2-3
Game 2: Cannons 9 (WP-Tom Paulshock 2-1) Sky & Sky Inc. 1 (LP-Alex Newman 1-3)
Lack of Sky hitting and quality at bats by the Cannons lead to a very lopsided loss for Sky.
Game two saw New once again toe the rubber for Sky facing Tom
Paulshock of the Cannons. The Cannons once again used the first inning to their
advantage. Jeff Kurland led off with a single. Chuck Easter followed with a 2
run HR. A Schwartzberg single, Warner BB and Edelman BB loaded the bases. Evan
Kreitzer followed with a 2 run single. Lee Densky then knocked in the 5th and
final run of the inning. Tom Paulshock gave one run back in the bottom of the

Game 1: Northwest Corridor 17 (WP-Howard Goldberg 1-3) NEK/ESB
Bombers 5 (LP-Ted Winner 0-2) 5 Innings
NWC and NEK/ESB stepped to the diamond to square off on a very chilly Sunday morning. It seemed more like football weather than softball but having a special celebrity on the sidelines heated things up a bit for both teams. After former Oriole’s great Al Bumbry threw out the 1st pitch The Bombers stepped to the plate 1st. Goldberg allowed one single but no runs to shut down the bombers and NWC were eager to take the early lead. The first 4 NWC batters all reached base off of Ted Winner but were only able to plate one run. The Bombers answered quickly in the 2nd evening the score after a Dan Gutman double. NWC’s batters continued to get the best of Winner in the 2nd. Goldman walked to lead off the inning followed by singles from Bell and Brad Marcus to load the bases. Lee Pollak walked to score a run and Jon Herbst singled in 2 more. NEK/ESB were shut down in the 3rd and 4th inning but NWC continued their offensive onslaught. Consecutive base hits from Josh Katz, Adam Silverman and Scott Sweren lead to 3 more runs in the 3rd inning. In the 4th Goldberg singled to lead off the inning followed by Katz and Silverman base hits. Gabe Unterman drilled a triple to the fence in right center to increase the NWC lead to 10-1. NEK/ESB put together a mini rally in the 5th off of Goldberg led by a Petey 2run double to the centerfield gap. NWC now leading 10-5 closed the game out by scoring 7 more runs in the bottom half of the 5th inning. Brad Rosenberg singled home Brad Marcus and Howard Goldberg’s long sac Fly to right center plated Lee Pollak. Adam Silverman hit a bases loaded triple to score 3 more and Scott Sweren followed with back to back triples, this one down the right field line. Gabe Unterman closed the game out scoring Sweren for the game winner with a sac fly to centerfield. NWC 17 – NEK/ESB 5.
NEK/ESB Bombers split a
double-header today with NWC. The Bombers welcomed manager Dave Finkelstein’s
friend, Al Bumbry, as a guest coach. Al, a Hall of Fame Oriole and a real class
guy, threw out the first pitch and everyone seemed genuinely excited to meet
him.
NWC played a great game in
game 1 behind pitcher/manager Howard Goldberg, and beat NEK/ESB after 5 innings,
15-5. After NWC jumped on top in the first with the 1-0 lead, 3B David Flamm hit
a scorching 2 run homer down the right field line for a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately,
Flamm missed 3rd base and the umpire called him out. After that play
things went down hill for the Bombers. Their entire lineup was totally locked in
and built a 10-1 lead after 4 innings. The Bombers fought back with 4 in the
fourth to cut the lead to 10-5. After Dan Guttman walked, Flamm singled and then
Jason Gardner walked to load the bases. New right fielder Tony Wiggs hit a RBI
groundout and then Petey Griffin then delivered a 2 run RBI pinch single. Mikey,
Georgie then hit a RBI single to cut the lead to 10-5.
Game 2:
NEK/ESB Bombers 7 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 2-0) Northwest
Corridor 2 (LP-Zach Scherr 1-1) Tzvi Friedman took the mound in game 2 and pitched a great
game and the Bombers played stellar defense to pull out a 7-2 victory.NWC stuck
first in the 2nd with a run but the Bombers tied it in the bottom of the 3rd
with a triple by Wiggs and a sac fly by Shuli Hochman. NWC then scored another
run in the 4th to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 4th the Bomber’s bats
finally came to life. After Garrett reached on an error, Flamm hit a single and
then Loeb hit a 2 run triple to the fence. In the top of the inning Loeb made a
fantastic play to turn a double play on a play that could have scored two runs
for NWC. Dan Guttman followed with an RBI single and then Gardner followed with
a single. After two more hits by Wiggs and Georgie the Bombers took a 6-2 lead
and tacked on one more run in the 6th and held on for a 7-2 victory. NWC managed one hit but no runs in the
top of the 1st inn off of Tzvi Friedman. NEK/ESB received the exact same
treatment from Zach Scherr. NWC struck first with consecutive hits from
Silverman and Sweren. Unterman hit a sac fly to score Silverman and take a 1-0
lead. NEK/ESB tied the score up at one a piece in the 3rd from a Tony triple to
left center and a Shulie sac fly. NWC scored one run in the 4th but the lead was
very short lived. Both pitchers enjoyed a pretty easy ballgame until the bottom
of the 4th inning. Scherr had been cruising but The Bombers bats started popping
for the 1st time of the morning. Marc Loeb tripled to score 2 runs and he was
followed by 4 consecutive base hits to grab the lead and extend it to 6-2. NWC
was quiet the rest of the game earning only two more hits off of Friedman in the
next 3 innings. NEK/ESB had the game wrapped up but added one more in the 6th to
capture a 7-2 victory and split the doubleheader.
