Highlights submitted thus far by Kings, Bombers, LOFT, AR Bodies, Stingers, Cannons
AR Bodies pitcher Jeff Harris was struck by a line drive late in his game 2 start against the Bombers. Harris partially deflected the scorching line drive with his glove, but the ball deflected into his right lower jaw area (see photo above). Fortunately for Jeff, he was wearing a mouth guard and thus saved all of his teeth. Jeff made the play on the ball before walking off the field on his own. He was examined by 2 of the Raptors player-dentists-- Jon Mandras and Jon Singer who are both general dentists. In addition, orthodontist Jeff Singer, the father of Jon, was also at the game and briefly looked at Jeff. While he could move his jaw, he was in marked pain and will be getting x-rays on Monday to make sure he does not have a jaw fracture.
Our best wishes go out to Jeff for a quick recovery. I will post any updated information I receive.
Updated Tuesday, June 8-- Jeff did have x-rays and there was no jaw fracture. Although he still has soreness, especially when chewing, he is headed in the right direction. He hopes to return to mound action, with facial protection, on Sunday.
AED Training Held, Cannons Gain Ground on Kings
The AED training was successfully completed prior
to the doubleheader on Sunday. Mike Marsiglia from Chesapeake AED Services was
kind enough to serve as the instructor for the 20 minute training session. His
company sold the league AED unit to the University of Maryalnd Hospital at a
significant discount. In turn, the University of Maryland Medical Center donated
the AED unit to our league for our full time use. Thanks also goes out to Detour
Dave Sandler for working with Mary Beth Levitt at the University of Maryland
Medical Center in securing this very generous donation.
In game action the only team not to win a game on the day was the 1st
place Kings. The Cannons limited the Kings to a total of 11 hits in the
doubleheader and swept the Kings. The other 3 match-ups resulted in splits.
In game one, the Bombers sent Tzvi Friedman to the mound. AR Bodies/Raptors jumped out to the lead, while the Bombers kept clawing away. The Bombers were trailing 6-3 in the 6th, and with bases loaded and no outs, they looked to do some major damage. However, Jeff Harris got Mark Loeb to ground into a DP, and then retired Friedman to hold the Raptors’ lead at 6-3. In the bottom of the 7th, the Bombers showed their medal by scoring three runs, the tying run coming on a single by Rashad Johnson. After holding the Raptors scoreless in the 8th, the Bombers scored a run in the bottom of the inning to take the victory 7-6.
AR Bodies and the
Bombers continued their short history of playing tough well defended, well
pitched games, against each other on this day.
Game 1 matched Jeff Harris against the lefty Tzvi Friedman, who has given the
Bodies fits the past two years. Bodies struck early in the top of the 1st when
Jon Singer and Jon Mandras both singled with 0 outs with Singer moving to third.
Friedman would limit the damage retiring the meat of the Bodies order with only
Singer scoring on an RBI groundout from Eric Radom. The Bombers came right back
in the bottom of the first, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. The score would remain 2-1
until the top of the third, when the top of the Bodies order started another
rally. Singer singled and Mandras walked with 1 out. Singer scored on a single
from Radom, and Mandras scored when the Bombers threw the ball out of play.
Radom then scored on Ryan Wilner's single. Wilner would later score on Ryan
Koch's sac fly, giving AR Bodies a 5-2 lead. The Bombers would make the score
5-4 in the bottom of the third on 4 singles. Bodies added one more in the 4th to
take a 6-4 lead when Jeff Brauer (1B) scored on Mandras' sac fly. The Bodies
would get out of a bases loaded, 0 out, jam in the 6th to keep the score 6-4
when Mandras touched 3rd on a ground ball and threw to Aaron Birenbaum for the
tag at home. The Bodies could not add any more runs for the rest of the game and
the Bombers tied it up in the 7th. A leadoff single and a walk, followed by a 1
out single led to a run. Then it appeared the Bodies might get out of it when
catcher Aaron Birenbaum made an amazing diving catch for the first out and Scott
Rogers made a diving catch in right field for the second out. But then the last
batter for the Bombers would drop one into right to tie it up. The next batter
would pop out, moving the game to extra innings. With two runners on in the
eighth and 2 outs, the Bombers second baseman made an incredible diving play on
a blooper, diving over his sliding right fielder and injuring his knee pretty
bad. He would miss the rest of the day and we hope he is okay. The Bombers did
not waste any time, scoring the winning run on 3 hits and a walk to win 7-6 in 8
innings.
Bodies offensive leaders in game 1:
Jon Singer - 3-5, 2 R
Eric Radom - 3-4, 2 RBI, R
Jeff Brauer - 2-4, R
Jon Mandras - 1-3, BB, sac, RBI, R
Game 2: AR Bodies 8 (WP-Jeff Harris 9-5) NEK/ESB Bombers 3 (LP-Ted Winner 1-6)
In game two, the Raptors jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Bombers battled back for 3 in the 5th, and had 2 on with 2 out. LF Aaron Gillette hit a screaming line-drive up the middle that deflected off of Harris’s glove and hit him in the jaw. It was a terrible sight, and the game came to a halt. After the incident, both teams seemed a bit lack-luster, but not before the Raptors tacked on 4 more runs for an 8-3 victory.
After losing 3 games in a row by 1 run each, the Bodies had to have game 2. This time, Harris would face Teddy Winner.
Jeff and the Bodies defense did their job in the early parts,
holding the Bombers to 3 hits and 0 runs in the first 3 innings. The Bodies
scored two in the bottom of the 1st when Singer and Mandras continued to get on
base with singles, followed by a Radom walk to load the bases with 0 outs. Again
the Bombers would limit the damage though to just 2 runs on sac flys from Wilner
and Dave Doarnberger. The Bodies loaded the bases with nobody out again in the
3rd on singles by Mandras and Radom and a walk by Wilner. Again the Bombers
would limit the damage, allowing Mandras to score on a Doarnberger single, and
Radom to score on a Koch sac fly. With the score 4-0 in the 4th, the Bombers
would start a comeback with 4 hits to start the inning, but Jeff would retire
the final 3 hitters with only 3 runs scoring to make it 4-3.
It got scary in the top of the 5th. With runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs, the
second batter for the Bombers ripped a line drive back at Jeff, who despite
getting his glove on the ball, was struck in the lower right jaw. He somehow
picked the ball up and threw to first ending the inning, but was hurt pretty
bad. He was able to walk off under his own power. The swelling was somewhat
controlled with ice, and it appears that all of his teeth are okay and nothing
is broken, but he is in a lot of pain and will probably get a precautionary xray
this week. We wish him a speedy recovery.
When the game resumed, the Bodies picked it up and added 4 in the bottom of the
5th while batting around. Wilner and Doarnberger singled with 0 outs and Koch
walked to load the bases. Birenbaum then drew an RBI walk, and Mark Radom, pinch
hitting for Jeff, had an RBI groundout moving all of the runners up. Brauer and
Singer would also add RBI singles in the inning to make it 8-3. This took the
pressure a bit off of relief pitcher, Eric Radom, who was able to hold the
Bombers scoreless in the final 2 innings. AR Bodies wins 8-3.

5-2) Kings 2 (LP-Mike Herr 7-1)
Cannons Steve Hayes connected for 2 homeruns (3 RBI's) leading the Cannons to a 6-3 game 1 win over the Kings. The Kings took 1-0 lead in b-1st on a Kenny Salzman 3B to LF and Troy Hendricks SF. Hayes hit a solo HR in t-2nd tying score 1-1. Keegan Rettaliata began the Kings b-2nd with a HR to put the Kings back ahead by a run.
In t-4th, with 2 outs and nobody on, Mike Dubansky reached on the only error by either team in the game. The Cannons capitalized on the error as Steve Hayes followed with a 2 RBI HR to LCF. After allowing the 2nd inning HR to Rettaliata, Cannons starter Mark Yokel was dominant, retiring 12 of the next 13 Kings hitters thru the 5th inning, with the Cannons holding on to a small 3-2 lead.
In t-6th with 2 out and none on, Chuck Easter singled, Jason Schwartzberg hit an RBI 2B that was just out of reach of Kings RCF Troy Hendricks. Mike Dubansky then singled just to the right side of second base, bringing home Schwartzberg and extending the Cannons lead 5-2. The Cannons added an insurance run in t-6th on singles by Johnny Edelman, Neal Charkatz, and a 2 out RBI 1B by Julio Hernandez.
Multi-hit Cannons players in game 1:

Johnny Edelman (2-3,1 R)
Neal Charkatz (2-3)

The Kings were limited to an identical 6 hits in the nightcap, dropping the decision to the Cannons 6-3. Tom Paulshock picked up the win over Chuck Grant. The Kings loaded the bases with 0 outs in t-1st on 2 walks and a Shilo Merwitz 1B. Arin Gelletly came thru with a bases loaded 2 RBI 1B. Keegan Rettaliata brought home the 3rd run of the inning on a groundout. The Cannons came back with 2 runs in b-1st. Jeff Kurland and Chuck Easter singled to lead off the inning. With 1 out and runners on the corners, Mike Dubansky's ground ball to first base went thru the legs of the Kings firstbaseman. Steve Hayes followed with an RBI SF to RCF, pulling the Cannons within 3-2. In b-2nd, Neal Charkatz singled and John Henshaw doubled to start rally. Dan Kassel got an RBI on his fielder's choice groundout, tying score 3-3.
The game remained 3-3 into the b-6th inning. With 1 out, Dubansky singled to LCF. Steve Hayes then hit his 3rd homerun on the day, a 2 RBI shot to LF putting the Cannons out ahead 5-3. Johnny Edelman followed with a 3B and Henshaw brought home Edelman with a 2 out RBI 1B. The game ended with a 6-3 final score in favor of the Cannons.

Game notes:
►Although the games were 1 run contests into the 6th inning of both games, the
Cannons badly outhit the Kings on the day. The Cannons were 26-for-64 (.406
average), while the Kings were 12-for-51 (.235). Excellent defense from both
squads kept the games close. In addition, the only pitcher of the 4 starters on
the day to yield a walk was Tom Paulshock who yielded 5 in game 2. The Cannons
did not commit an error in the doubleheader, while the Kings had 1 in each game.
►Cannons 3B John Henshaw was making his PMSL debut against
the Kings. The Kings tried testing out the new guy, but Henshaw was
flawless. The Kings had 9 groundouts to Henshaw in game 1 and 5 in game 2.
Kings team notes:
►Troy Hendricks returned after missing 2 weeks (and the
5/23 rainout) on a job assignment in flooded Nashville, Tennessee.
►The Kings will be missing 5 regular players next week-- Chuck Grant, Kenny
Salzman, Scott Katzen, Arin Gelletly, Shilo Merwitz. The Kings will be bringing
out the youth in Koby Sarubin, Brooks Sandler, and Justin Cohen-- all 3 players
age 20 and under. The Kings will also be bringing out a veteran in team
hall-of-famer Steve Levy-- let's safely say that Steve can cover the combined
age of any 2 of the young guns. The games for Levy will bring him to the 300
Kings lifetime total.

Game 1: Stingers 5 (WP-Larry Newman 2-11) LOFT
4 (LP-Rick Winepol 6-5)
LOFT came out in game 1 riding a 4 game win streak, but worried a 3 week layoff
may hurt the momentum. LOFT came out sluggish early in the game and they were
missing a few key outfielders. The Stingers capitalized on that as they were
able to score 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to take a 3-0 lead. LOFT
did respond with 2 in the top of the 4th from a Matt Boden RBI double. LOFT then
took the lead in the top of the 6th 4-3 highlighted by a Matt Boden inside the
park HR and a Brett Henry RBI single. The Stingers however came back in the
bottom of the
6th with 2 more runs off more shaky defense from LOFT. LOFT was unable to plate
any run in the top of the 7th and the Stingers were able to steal one 5-4 in
game 1.
After a tough set our last time out and
a couple weeks off the Stingers were ready to go against LOFT. All in all the
game was mostly a defensive, low scoring battle. The first two innings were
quiet while the Stingers faced seven batters and LOFT eight in the first two
innings. LOFT pitcher Winepol throwing 2 K's. In the bottom of the third the
Stingers finally got to Winepol off a walk, ROE, and a triple by Buchman plating
two. Liberman (in his season debut) hit a SAC fly to plate a third for the
inning. LOFT would answer in the top of the forth manufacturing two of their
own. The Stingers would be held through the fifth inning. In the top of the
sixth LOFT would manufacture two more runs. With two outs, LOFT loaded the bases
off two Stinger errors. The Stingers would end the inning on a grounder down 3-4
headed into the bottom of the inning. Liberman started the run with a walk with
one out. Palo up next hit a double to plate Liberman. Randal would follow with a
single to knock in Palo. These would the only runs the Stingers would need
putting down three of four batters in the top of the seventh to secure the
victory. The Stingers gave Nemo his second win of the season and built some
momentum for the second half of the season.
LOFT Offensive Stars:
Dan Mabry:
2-4; 3B, 1B, R
Matt Boden: 2-4; HR, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R
Mark Wienner: 2-3; 2 1B, R
Brett Henry: 2-3; 2 1B, RBI
Game 2: LOFT 12 (WP-Rick Winepol 7-5) Stingers 0 (LP-Larry Newman 2-12) 6 Innings
LOFT came out in game 2 looking to rebound from a disappointing game 1 performance. Rick Winepol was able to get out of the top of the 1st quickly and then LOFT looked to be headed for the same fate as the first 2 batters were retired, but then LOFT's bats came alive with 2 outs. Bobby Yaffe had a 2 RBI double, Mark Wienner a RBI single and Herb Schonfeld followed that up with a 2 RBI triple to give LOFT a 5-0 lead. LOFT added 2 more in the bottom of the 3rd, 1 in the bottom of the 4th and 2 more in the bottom of the 5th to go up 10-0. Winepol continued to cruise on the mound not facing any pressure from the Stingers in game 2. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th Michael Bowen got a base hit and then Dan Mabry ended the game with a 2 run inside the park walk off home run. LOFT completes the shutout and wins the game 12-0 to get back on the winning track.
