Game 1: Kings 20 (WP-Mike Herr 8-1)  Stingers 5 (LP-Larry Newman 2-13)  5 Innings

The Stingers came out looking for a good showing against the Kings. The first game started off on the wrong foot. The Kings came to bat first and turned the run manufacturing machine to auto. After a quick first out, the Kings went base to base seemingly without much effort. The Stingers made numerous fielding errors giving up too many extra bases. In the first and second inning the Kings would pull down six runs each. The Stingers would begin their answer in the bottom of the second starting a rally brining in three runs. The Stinger made a pitching change to give Beverly his first pitching action of the season and the defense would hold in the top of the third allowing a single run. The bat attack of the Stingers continued in the bottom of the inning. Beverly would help his own cause with an in-the-park homer followed by singles by Eisenberg and Brooks Miller. Buchman would get an RBI single for a second run in the inning. Heading into the t-4th the Stingers were down 13-5. The Kings offensive onslaught would continue in the inning stringing together hit after hit plating four more in the inning. The Stingers went down in order in the bottom of the inning. The hole created at the beginning of the game would prove to be too much and the Stingers would drop game one 20-6 in 5 innings.

►Justin Cohen achieved his first 4 hit game. He is only the 3rd Kings player this season with a 4 hit game (Arin Gelletly 4/26 vs. LOFT, Alan Varhaftik 5/9 vs. Bombers).
►Keegan Rettaliata pitched the final inning, his first career pitching appearance.

Game 2: Kings 8 (WP-Mike Herr 9-1)  Stingers 2 (LP-Larry Newman 2-14)

Game two would be a different story. The Stingers started off the game with two runs off a Randall SAC fly and a Buchman single. The Kings would muster only a single run in their first at bat and the Stingers were encouraged at the positive start for the game. It would be short lived as the Stingers could not turn hits into runs leaving the bases loaded in the third and two men on in the sixth and seventh innings. There were a total of nine men left on base in the game. Nemo pitched an excellent second game holding the Kings to only eight total runs (two scored in the bottom of the sixth). The Stingers were in the game the entire way and just couldn't score when it matters. Next week Stingers will face the Cannons a little short staffed and can hopefully build on the successes from game two.

Stingers Larry Newman pitched courageously thru a leg muscle injury, keeping his team in the game until late. The Kings did not hold a lead until b-4th, but 7 runs in their final 3 at-bats was good enough for an 8-2 game 2 victory. The game started oddly enough when Tim Palo reached on a catcher's interference. Loading the bases with 0 outs on singles by Lee Lieberman and Mike Beverly, the Stingers got runs on a SF by Mike Randall and 1B by Jeb Buchman.

Steve Levy hit a 2 out 0 on 2B in b-2nd. Rob Barrow brought home Levy with a hard grounder thru the left side of the infield.  The Stingers again threatened in t-3rd, loading the bases with 0 outs as the top 3 hitters all reached base on 2 hits and a walk. Kings starter Mike Herr was able to escape the inning on an infield popup for the 1st out and a 5-5-2 doubleplay started by third baseman Koby Sarubin and concluded with a fine tag play by catcher Brooks Sandler. The Stingers held a 2-1 lead into b-4th.

Alan Varhaftik led off the Kings b-4th a with a single and Keegan Rettaliata followed with a 2 RBI inside-the-park HR, giving the Kings a 3-2 lead. Kings extended lead in b-5th as Justin Cohen and Herr singled to start inning. Brooks Sandler's grounder found a hole thru the infielder's legs, and the Kings lead was 4-2. A SF by Sarubin and RBI 1B by Jeff Slutzker helped extend the Kings lead to 6-2. The Kings tacked on 2 additional runs in b-6th, the key hit an RBI 1B by Jan Katzen and the 2nd 2B on the day by Steve Levy.

Rob Barrow took the mound in the t-7th and was able to pitch a scoreless inning, preserving an 8-2 Kings win.

Stingers game 2 offensive leaders:
Tim Palo (2-2,1 R, reached on catcher's interference)
Mike Beverly (3-3)
Jeb Buchman (2-3,1 RBI)

Kings offensive leaders in game 2:
Jeff Slutzker (2-3,1 RBI)
Keegan Rettaliata (2-3,2 R,2 RBI,HR)
Steve Levy (2-3,1 R,2 2B)
Mike Herr (2-3,1 R)

Kings game notes:
►Steve Levy played in his 300th PMSL game, all in a Kings uniform. He becomes the 8th Kings player to reach this special milestone.
►Brooks Sandler started both games of the doubleheader behind the plate. His 6 starts as a catcher in 2010 is 1st on the team, now ahead of Mike Herr and Rob Barrow both with 5, and Scott Katzen with 2.
►With 6 RBI's in the doubleheader, Keegan Rettaliata went over the 200 career RBI milestone.

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:      Umpire- Scott Snyder
Game 1: Northwest Corridor 12 (WP-Matt Silverman 2-3)  NEK/ESB Bombers 2 (LP-Ted Winner 1-7)

NWC and The Bombers met for the 2nd time this season, splitting the doubleheader earlier in the year. NWC’s 1st two batters drilled singles off of Ted Winner to start an early rally. A Josh Katz base hit and Adam Silverman sac fly helped NWC reach an early 2-0 lead. The Bombers managed one base hit off of Silverman in the bottom half of the inning but no runs. Ted Winner completely shut down the NWC offense in the 2nd innings striking out two batters. The bombers looked to put some runs on the board in the 2nd getting a leadoff walk form David Flamm and a single by Ben Gutman, however the next 3 batters failed to get the ball out of the infield and Silverman escaped the inning unscathed. NWC broke things open in the top of the 3rd plating 5 runs and extending their lead to 7-0. Brad Rosenberg and Adam Silverman both had rbi doubles in the inning. Meanwhile Silverman continues to keep The Bombers off balance and the NWC defense committed zero errors in the game. The Bombers managed just 1 walk and zero hits over the next 3 innings. NWC added two insurance runs in the 5th and three more in the 6th inning. The Bombers would finally get on the board and ruin the shutout in the bottom of the 6th inning. With two outs and bases loaded Tony stepped and hit a low fly to centerfield. Scott Sweren sprinting in from deep center made a diving leap but just barely missed and two runs plated for The Bombers. Final Score 12-2

In game 1 there were very few highlights for the Bombers. Matt Silverman threw strikes and his defense made all the plays. The Bombers bats had been slumping for the past few weeks and many line drives or shots in the gap were right at a fielder for NWC or fantastic plays were made by their defense. Teddy Winner actually pitched a great game. The old saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is not true regarding Teddy. At his advanced age he has come up with a new delivery and he is pounding it in the strike zone. Many of the NWC hits were check swings or slow rollers because they were having trouble getting around on him. To NWC’s credit, they put together enough offense combined with stellar defense to win game one 12-2. The other highlights for the Bombers in the game was outstanding defense in hitting from Ben Gutman and continued outstanding play from Aaron Gillette. Aaron collected two more hits and is hitting 800 for the year.

NWC Hitting Highlights:
Jon Herbst 3-3 3r BB
Josh Katz 3-4 r 2rbi
Gabe Unterman 3-4
Adam Silverman & Brad Rosenberg both multi-hit 3rbi games

Game 2: NEK/ESB Bombers 8 (WP-Ted Winner 2-7) Northwest Corridor 7 (LP-Matt Silverman 2-4)

The same two pitchers faced each other in game #2 and The Bombers struck early trying to put together a better offensive showing in the nightcap. Gutman, Loeb and Flamm each had rbi hits to give The Bombers an early 3-0 lead. NWC cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Rosenberg and Katz had back to back hits and Silverman drove them both home with a clutch 2 out base hit. Both teams failed to score in the 2nd, NWC left two runners in scoring position. The Bombers increased their lead to 5-2 in the 3rd SS Aaron drilled a nice line drive over the head of NWC’s right fielder for a 2run inside the park homer. NWC added one in the bottom half of the inning to keep pace. Silverman managed to get out of the 4th with zero runs allowed, leaving 2 Bombers players in scoring position. NWC rallied in the 4th getting back to back hits up the middle from Brad Marcus and Matt Silverman. Jon Herbst then drilled a 2 out line drive down the 3rd base line and legged out an inside the park 3run homer to give NWC their 1st lead. The lead would be short lived as The Bombers came out swinging in the top of the 5th. 6 consecutive hits from the Bombers 2-7 hitters plated 3 runs and gave them an 8-6 lead. Winner was able to shut NWC down in the 5th 1-2-3 for the 1st time of the day. The Bombers went down almost as easily in the top of the 6th. NWC put a little rally together in the bottom half of the inning but Silverman struck out looking to end the inning and leave two men on. Ben Gutman led off the 7th with a base hit and was almost knocked in by Marc Loeb. Loeb drilled a ball deep to centerfield that Scott Sweren caught while crashing into the fence, certainly saving one if not two runs. The Bombers failed to score Gutman from 3rd base and NWC went into the bottom of the 7th hoping for one last rally. Lee Pollak flied out to centerfield but Jon Herbst and Sweren delivered back to back singles. Rosenberg hit a sac fly to centerfield causing the 2nd out but inching NWC 1 run closer to tieing the game. Katz came up with the intent to knock home Sweren from 2nd base but ended up with a called strike three to end the game and finish this hot, humid Sunday with another split for the two teams.

After a heated meeting in between games the Bombers came out and scored 3 in the 1st. Mikey led off with a single and Gillette and Guttman followed with singles. Loeb, Flamm and Gardner followed with RBI’s for a 3-0 lead. NWC scored 2 in the bottom of the 1st with a 2 out rally. The Bombers then scored another 2 runs on a HR by Gillette. The Bombers increased their lead and NWC rallied to cut the lead to 8-7 but Winner and the Bombers defense held on for the victory to earn the doubleheader split.
