Week 13:  June 27, 2010

Highlights submitted thus far by Kings, Cannons, Bombers, Stingers

Third Straight Week of 90° F Heat
The heat was a factor for the 3rd week in a row. Games did move back to Northwest Regional Park after last week's lacrosse tournament at the park. Most teams had players dealing with injuries and substitute players were much appreciated on most teams.

The Bombers, with a sweep over Sky, extended their winning streak to 5 games and have gained ground in the standings. The Kings win streak became 6 games with a sweep over LOFT.

The Cannons held onto 2nd place in the standings with a split against AR Bodies. The Stingers and Northwest Corridor battled to an exciting split, with NWC holding a game lead over the Stingers for the #7 seed.

Game 1: NEK/ESB Bombers 15 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 6-2)  Sky & Sky Inc. 2 (LP-Alex Newman 4-8)

This week, the Bombers were looking for revenge. Earlier in the year, Sky and Sky swept the Bombers and the Bombers were hoping for some payback. As it turns out, it was a good day for the Bombers, and they swept Sky and Sky, 15-2, and 8-7.

In game 1, Tzvi Friedman pitched another gem and the Bombers’ bats came to life. In the first inning, the Bombers jumped on Sky’s pitcher, Alex Newman, for nine runs. After one out, Ben Gutman singled and Friedman followed with a single. Mark Loeb, who is trying to hit every pitch over the fence since his famous four homerun day against the Kings (and by the way, he hasn’t hit one since), hit an RBI single. Wiggs walked, and then Flamm walked with the bases loaded. Dan Gutman followed with an RBI single. After Sky recorded the second out of the inning, Chaim Finkelstein hit an RBI single, and then Petey Griffin hit a two-run double. Leadoff batter Mikey then hit an RBI single and Ben Gutman capped the scoring with a two-run single.

In the second, the Bombers tacked on two more runs. After Flamm doubled, Dan Gutman hit an RBI single and then Shulie Hochman hit an RBI triple to the fence. In the third, the Bombers scored again. Jason Gardner hit a leadoff bomb to the centerfield fence, but with his advancing age, only earned a double. Petey hit a single, and then Ben drove him in to take a 12-nothing lead. Sky finally got on the scoreboard with two in the bottom of the third. However, in the fourth, the Bombers weren’t done. Dan hit a leadoff single, and Rashad followed with a double. Chaim then hit a two-run single to make the score 15-2. The rest of the day belonged to Friedman and the Bombers’ defense, who played flawlessly. The game ended after five innings.

Game 2: NEK/ESB Bombers 8 (WP-Ted  Winner 4-7)  Sky & Sky Inc. 7 (LP-Ken Zalis 4-6)

In game two, it was a seesaw battle, but the Bombers pulled it out in the bottom of the seventh. Sky scored four unearned runs in the first when, with bases loaded, a little flair went off the left-fielder’s glove. The Bombers got even in the bottom of the first by scoring four, themselves. Mikey led off with a single, and Ben continued his hitting by hitting a single. Dan hit an RBI ground-out. Wiggs then flew out to LCF, but he dropped the ball and a run scored. Garner and Petey followed with RBI singles. The Bombers took the lead in the bottom of the second. Teddy walked and Mikey was used as a courtesy runner for him. He scored on a bases-loaded walk to Wiggs.

In the fourth, Sky tied it on a three-base error past first base and a SAC fly. Sky took the lead 7-6 until the bottom of the sixth, when Shulie hit a gapper that rolled to the fence and he scored to tie the game at seven. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bombers loaded the bases against expert pitcher Kenny Zalis and Chaim Finkelstein ended the game with a SAC fly. Credit Teddy Winner and Kenny Zalis. Both of them pitched excellent games and the Bombers are all going out over July 4th weekend and buying gold shoes like Kenny wears, to give us extra strength on the stretch drive to the playoffs.

Game 1: Northwest Corridor 14 (WP-Howard Goldberg 3-5)  Stingers 10 (LP-Larry Newman 3-16)

The Stingers were riding high on their win over the Cannons last week looking to get out of the basement with a sweep of NWC. The Stingers started off really strong taking advantage of a few NWC walks and timely hitting to take an early 4-2 lead in the first. The Stingers offense would remain hot plating another 4 in the second . The Stingers defense would be the story of the day surrendering 2 runs over the first four innings. The Stingers entered the bottom of the fifth with a 10-2 lead but things would go south quick. NWC would rally in the bottom of the inning. After getting the first two out of the inning, NWC took advantage of some sloppy defense and would rally for seven runs in the inning. NWC brought in the closer and shut the door on the Stingers offense and would fall to NWC 14-10.

Game 2:  Stingers 12 (WP-Larry Newman 4-16)  Northwest Corridor 9 (LP-Matt Silverman 2-6)

Game two would be much of the same as the first. NWC scored three in the top of the inning followed by the Stingers scoring three of their own (thanks for a 2 RBI in-the-park home run by Liberman). The Stingers would turn it up again with another eight runs in the third with clutch hitting from all parts of the line-up (and some help from NWC defense and pitching). NWC would make a run to amount another comeback but the Stingers defense would hold. Nemo catches the win in the night-cap at a 12-9 count.Game 2:  Stingers 12 (WP-Larry Newman 4-16) Northwest Corridor 9 (LP-Matt Silverman 2-6)

Game 1: AR Bodies 12 (WP-Jeff Harris 12-5)  Cannons 2 (LP- Mark Yokel 6-3)

The Cannons took on AR Bodies in a battle for 2nd place. The Cannons were once again down players due to vacations and injuries. Never the less, the squad continued to battle all day and split with AR Bodies on this hot Sunday.

In game once Mark Yokel went against Jeff Harris. Game 1 was dominated by AR Bodies who came away with a 12-2 victory. Yokel did pitch well for the Cannons. Some sloppy defense led to many unearned runs. The Cannons only managed two runs on RBI's by CHuck Easter and Chris Zoeller
