Game 1: Cannons 11 (WP-Mark Yokel 4-2)  NEK/ESB Bombers 4 (LP-Tzvi Friedman 3-2)

In game 1, Mark Yokel and the Cannons picked up the win 11-4. It was a close game until the 6th when Steve Hayes of the Cannons cleared the bases with a long 3 rbi HR to center.

Today’s doubleheader pitted the Cannons against the Bombers. The Bombers were knocked out of the playoffs last year by the Cannons by rallying in the 7th for the victory. The Cannons went on to become the champion of the league. On this cloudy day the Bombers have revenge on their minds. In game 1 Tzvi Friedman took the mound vs. veteran star Mark Yokel. Mark missed all of last year and the Cannons were happy to have him back. He is a stabilizing force on the mound for the Cannons and he kept the Bombers off balance all day.

The Cannons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a RBI by Edelman and a force out. The Bombers came back in the bottom of the first. Mikie Georgie led off with a double and Aaron Gillette brought him home with a double. Marc Loeb hit a SAC fly that scored Gillette but the Cannons appealed that he left second base too early and the umpire called him out to keep the score 1-1. In the bottom of the 2nd the Bombers took the lead. Flamm let off with a walk. Wiggs hit a single and then Gutman drove home Flamm with a hard line drive that went off the first baseman’s glove. Jason Gardner followed with a SAC fly and the Bombers led 3-2. The Cannons fought back and took a 5-3 lead going into the 6th. The Bombers rallied for a run on a single by Gillette and he came around to score on a RBI by Friedman for a 5-4 Cannons lead.

However, the Cannons put the game away with 6 runs in the top of the 7th. Two key errors by the Bombers and a 3 run HR by catcher Hayes put the game out of reach and the Bombers felt they let another winnable game get away.

Game 2: NEK/ESB Bombers 17 (WP-Ted Winner 1-5)  Cannons 1 (LP-Lee Densky 1-1)

Game 2 was never in doubt as NEK/ESB cruised to an easy victory. In game 2 the Bombers came in focused and determined to end their 3 game losing streak and they did it in convincing fashion with a 17-1 victory. The game ended after 6 innings. Ted Winner pitched a fabulous game and shut out the potent Cannons offense. The Cannons avoided the shut-out by scoring a run in the 6th. Winner pounded the strike zone all game and the Bombers played great defense behind him.

In the 1st inning, after 2 outs Marquiex Garrett hit a single and Loeb (home run Loeb) hit a double over the left fielder’s head. Friedman followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 Bombers lead. In the 2nd inning the Bombers scored 2 more runs. Flamm hit a single followed by a single by Ben Guttman and a walk to Ted Winner. Gardner followed with an RBI single and then Rashaad Johnson knocked in the 4th run with an RBI single. In the bottom of the 2nd the Bombers flashed their defensive prowess. Edelman hit a ball over Gillette’s head in left field. He chased the ball down, fired to SS Dan Gutman who fired it to 3B Flamm to gun him down. In the 3rd, the Bombers tacked on another run on an RBI single by Dan Gutman.

In the 4th the Bombers continue to pile it on and added 3 more runs, the key hits, an RBI, Double by Gillette and a 2 run single by Wiggs. In the 5th the Bombers put the game out of reach by scoring another 9 runs for a 17-0 lead. The Cannons looked shell shocked and ready for the game to end. The Bombers batted around and the game ended after 6.

Game 1: Kings 1 (WP-Mike Herr 7-0)   Raptors 0 (LP-Jeff Harris 8-3)

The Kings Mike Herr and AR Bodies Jeff Harris engaged in an old-style pitcher's duel, with the Kings coming out with a 1-0 victory. Each team was limited to 8 singles and 1 walk. The lone run of the game came in on a 4th inning SF by Arin Gelletly. The Kings stranded 8 runners on base in their 6 at-bats, while AR Bodies left 9 men-on-base.

Neither team got a runner to 2nd base thru the first 3 innings. In b-4th, Kenny Salzman, Jeff Slutzker, and Shilo Merwitz all singled to start the inning, loading the bases for the Kings with 0 outs. AR Bodies got singles from Harris and Eric Radom to put runners on 1st and 2nd base with 1 out, but Herr was able to retire the #2 and #3 hitters on a flyout and groundout to end the rally.

That was the 12th game in franchise history, a span of 658 games ago. The lone hit in that game for the Ressin team was a 2 out 1st inning hit by George. Herr retired the final 19 batters in order.
► The Kings have been on the other end of a 1-0 game just once in franchise history-- May 28, 1995 as Bruce Eisenberg of Attman's Deli (they were known as Jilly's that season) defeated Larry Newman.
► The Kings have been on the winning end of just 2, 2-0 games. The Kings defeated the Crown Royals 2-0 on 6/23/96. Larry Newman got the win over the late Darron Tabatznik. The Crown Royals roster included current league players Shilo Merwitz and Mike Rottenberg. The other Kings 2-0 win was a no hitter tossed by Ted Winner, May 7th, 2000 against Rue Rue's Raiders. Larry Heinline took the loss for the Raiders, allowing just 5 Kings hits. The Raiders roster included current league player Zach Scherr.

Game 2: Kings 7 (WP-Chuck Grant 7-0)   Raptors 6 (LP-Jeff Harris 8-4)

The nightcap featured a pitching match-up between Jeff Harris and Chuck Grant. There were many more scoring opportunities for both teams, with the Kings coming out ahead again by 1 run, 7-6. The Raptors took 1-0 lead in b-2nd on Dave Doarnberger 3B and SF by Harris. In Kings t-3rd, the bottom 3 Kings hitters reached as Grant walked, Justin Cohen doubled, and Mike Herr singled home the tie run. In t-5th, MIke Herr reached on an infield error to leadoff. Following 2 flyouts, Merwitz, Gelletly (RBI), and Varhaftik (RBI) all singled giving the Kings the lead again, 6-4. In t-6th, singles by Jan Katzen and Grant, along with a SF by Cohen extended the Kings lead 7-4.

Grant was able to get out the next 2 hitters without allowing a run, but Scott Rogers came thru with an RBI 1B to CF. Eric Radom then followed with a 1B to RCF, but Justin Cohen's throw to catcher Mike Herr was just in time to nail Harris at the plate.

AR Bodies trailed 7-5 into b-7th, but would not go down without a fight. Leadoff batter Jon Singer singled. Grant was able to retire the next 2 hitters on a fielder's choice groundout and a flyout. Ryan Wilner lined a 2B to the gap in LCF to score Jason Tourangeau, but Wilner was out trying to turn his hit into a triple, ending the game in favor of the Kings 7-6.

Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 14 (WP-Alex Newman 3-5)  Stingers 13 (LP-Larry Newman 1-10)

Game 1 was the match up of the Newmans. Father Larry cruised for the first two innings, giving up just one hit. Meanwhile, Alex was the victim of a bunch of bloop hits in the first inning leading to 4 runs for the Stingers. Alex couldn't find the zone in the second inning. After walking the first batter, Larry crushed a ball over Andy Bloom's head in left field, for an RBI triple. It might have only been a double, but Andy couldn't stop laughing as he realized he just got burned. This must have shaken Alex because he then walked the next 5 batters. He managed to minimize the damage, but the Stingers had an 8-0 lead. Sky came back in the top of the 3rd with 3 runs, highlighted by Elliot Blank's 2RBI triple to center. Alex had a quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 3rd, and Sky chipped away with 2 more runs in the 4th, with help from the Stinger's defense, allowing the hustling Andy Bloom to go all the way around the bases on a single. The Stingers got one more back in the 4th, and then Sky's offense finally took the lead. After loading the bases, Brian Sky delivered a big 3 run triple. Andy Bloom followed with a single, and then Ken Zalis knocked him in with a triple. At the end of 5, Sky had an 11-9 advantage. The Stingers stranded 2 runners in the 6th, and Sky tacked on 3 more runs with 3 consecutive 2 out RBI hits by Ken Zalis, Alex Newman and Pat Tobin. In the top of the 7th, the Stingers put up a fight with 4 hits and 2 walks. The Stingers had the tying run on 3rd base but Sky's second baseman Ken Zalis snared a hard hit ball by Jeb Buchman and threw him out at first base to end it. Sky squeaked by with a 14-13 win.

The Stingers had two goals on Sunday, to climb out of the cellar and to get Nemo a couple of victories against his old teammates at Sky & Sky. Game one started out promising as the Stingers tallied four runs in 1st on rbi singles by Sheridan, Beverly and a two run single by Shifrin. The Stingers kept things going in the top of the second when Nemo helped himself with an rbi triple off of son Alex. Three more runs were plated when the rattled younger Newman walked the next five Stingers before getting a big bases loaded strikeout, this gave the Stingers an early 8-0 lead. Unfortunately the Stingers couldn't hold the lead as Newman found his control and Sky & Sky chipped away and took a 14-9 lead going into the 7th. The Stingers didn't go quietly however. A rally helped by two more free passes and key rbi singles by Murphy and Friedman ended just short 14-13, with the tying and go ahead runs on base.

Sky multi-hits:
Andy Bloom 3-4, RBI, 2R
Pat Tobin 3-4, RBI, R
Andy Vanlandingham, 3-4, 2R
Elliot Blank 2-4, 3B, 2RBI, R
Ken Zalis 2-3, 3B, 2RBI, 2R
Alex Newman 2-4, RBI, R

Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc. 22 (WP-Ken Zalis 2-4)  Stingers 2 (LP-Larry Newman 1-11)

The second game was a lot different. Ken Zalis matched up against Larry Newman. Sky jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. In the second inning, with 2 outs Elliot Blank doubled, Shaun Poulton singled and then Andrew Vanlandingham singled. Brian Sky hit a fly to center that was misplayed for an error, and then Andy Bloom hit an inside the park HR. After 2 innings, Sky jumped out to a 7 run lead. The Stingers got 2 more back in the 3rd, and neither team scored in the 4th, so it was 7-2 Sky. Sky picked up 3 more runs in the 5th, highlighted by a double by Alex Newman, driving in Ken Zalis, who had his 3rd of 5 hits in the game. Mike Rotts drove in Alex, and then Elliot Blank knocked in Rotts, giving Sky a 10-2 lead. Ken Zalis continued to cruise, and didn't allow another run in the game. Sky picked up 3 more runs in the 6th, and then batted around with 9 runs in the 7th. Bulldog catcher Pat Tobin continued to play hard, diving for a pop up in foul territory in the last inning even though Sky had a pretty safe 20 run lead. Final score was 22-2.

Game two held much less drama as Sky & Sky scored early and often and coasted to easy win. One item of note was a rare catchers interference call against Sky & Sky in the third.
