Round 1: Northwest Corridor (#7) 14 (WP-Howard Goldberg 6-5)  NEK/ESB Bombers (#2) 11 (LP-Ted Winner 6-8)

#2 seed Bombers squared off against #7 seed NWC on field #1 to kick off the first round of the 2010 playoffs. The two teams split the season series 2-2 and have had a long history of tightly played games whether it was NWC, Bombers, Mt Washington Tavern, NEK, Eastern Savings Bank or DC Dental. Every incarnation of these two squads have always resulted in fun softball games.

Tzvi Friedman shut down NWC in the 1st despite giving up two hits in the inning. Matt Silverman took the mound for NWC and had a tough time finding the strike zone. 6 Bomber’s batters were given free passes in the inning and two misplayed balls by the NWC defense resulted in The Bombers exploding out to an 8 run lead. Silverman went back out in the 2nd and escaped without giving up a run but ran into problems again in the 3rd. In the top half of the inning the NWC offense finally got on board. Brad Rosenberg, Adam Silverman and Howard Goldberg all enjoyed rbi base hits leading to 5runs scored. The Bomber’s first 3 batters in the 3rd all were issued bases on balls and Silverman was relieved for Goldberg on the mound. All 3 of those batters scored and After 3 innings the Bombers enjoyed a commanding 11-5 lead. A Lee Pollak base hit and Jon Herbst sac fly gave NWC 2 more runs in the 4th inning. Ted Winner was now on the mound for the Bombers and Goldberg was cruising on the mound for NWC making quick work of the Bombers hitters in the 4th, 5th & 6th innings. Continuing to chip away at the lead, NWC scored 2 more in the 5th. Goldberg hit a sac fly to centerfield and Brad Marcus’ rbi single drove home Adam Silverman. Scott Sweren roped an rbi base hit up the middle in the 6th to get NWC within 1 run of the lead. In the top of the 7th NWC really got to Winner on the mound. Marcus, Matt Silverman and Matt Frosolone all started the innings with hits to the outfield. Joey Liner and Lee Pollak both drew walks and Jon Goldman & Jon Herbst continued the singles parade leading to 4 runs and a 14-11 lead. With one last chance to win the game and hold their seeding the Bombers received a leadoff hit from Chaim in the bottom of the 7th. Jason Gardner popped up to rightfield and Petey popped up to the shortstop. Raashad Johnson kept the inning and the Bomber’s hopes alive knocking a bloop single to centerfield to give them runners on 1st & 2nd down by 3 runs. Ben Gutman then drilled a line drive but right at 1st baseman Jon Goldman to end the game and give NWC a come from behind upset victory.

In game 1 the Bombers jumped out to an 8-0 lead . NWC kept chipping away and took the lead and the game behind Howard Goldberg for a 14-11 win. Ted Winner took the loss.

Round 1: AR Bodies (#3) 14  (WP-Jeff Harris 16-8)  LOFT (#6) 3  (LP-Rick Winepol 10-15)

The 3 seed AR Bodies took on the 6 seed LOFT in a rematch of last year's 3rd round game. The Bodies were determined not to let LOFT knock them out once again.

Jeff Harris took on Rick Winepol. LOFT took the lead in the top of the 3rd on a 2 out RBI single. The Bodies were feeling the pressure, but were able to break through for 9 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, and the pressure was gone. The inning featured many bloop hits and good breaks for the Bodies. The Bodies would bat around in the inning, and it would be capped off by Aaron Birenbaum's 3-run homer. Birenbaum also hit a hustling bloop triple to start the inning. LOFT would add 2 in the fifth to keep in somewhat close, but the Bodies would seal the deal in the 6th with 5 more runs. 3 of the runs came on a Jon Mandras 3 run homer. Bodies win 14-3.

Round 1: Kings (#1) 6 (WP-Chuck Grant 11-3) Stingers (#8) 2 (LP-Larry Newman 4-23)

The #8 Stingers and the #1 Kings played a typical low scoring Playoffs game with a 2-2 score thru the first 5 innings. Stingers starting pitcher Larry Newman limited the Kings offense to just 8 singles, 2 walks, and 2 runs thru 5 innings; while Kings starter Mike Herr held the Stingers to 5 singles, 2 walks, and 2 runs. The Kings caught a break in b-6th when a potential inning ending ground ball was ruled foul. The Kings took advantage, scoring 4 runs in the inning and Chuck Grant, in relief, held the Stingers scoreless in their final 2 at-bats. The Kings won the Round 1 match-up 6-2.

The Kings rallied right away with 3 singles in b-1st from Kenny Salzman, Koby Sarubin, and Jeff Slutzker (RBI). Following a flyout, Alan Varhaftik came thru with an RBI 1B to give Kings 2-0 1st inning lead. In t-4th, 1 out singles by Lee Liberman and Brett Eisenberg, along with a walk to Mike Beverly loaded the bases. Neil Liberman connected with an RBI 1B and Stuart Sheridan hit a SF to RCF to tie the score 2-2.

Chuck Grant entered from the bullpen to start the t-6th and after allowing a leadoff 1B to Tim Palo, retired the next 3 hitters. In b-6th, Varhaftik singled with 1 out and following a strikeout, Jan Katzen walked. With 2 outs, Troy Hendricks hit a grounder to 3rd base that was fielded by Stewart Sheridan who stepped on the bag for what the Stingers thought was the final out of the inning. The ball, however, was ruled by the umpire to be foul so Hendricks got another chance. He took advantage of the 2nd chance with an RBI 1B to LF. On the throw to the plate scoring Varhaftik, Katzen and Hendricks both advanced. Rookie RF Justin Cohen delivered a clutch 2 RBI 1B up the middle for a 5-2 Kings lead. Rob Barrow followed with another 1B, this one mishandled in the outfield, allowing Cohen to come all the way from 1st base to home for a 6-2 Kings lead. Grant again allowed just 1 single in the Stingers t-7th, closing out the victory for the Kings.

Round 2: Kings (#1) 10 (WP-Chuck Grant 12-3)  Northwest Corridor (#7) 5 (LP-Howard Goldberg 6-6)

The Kings held a 6-5 lead thru 4 1/2 innings and got 2 runs in their at-bats in b-5th and b-6th to come away with a Round 2 10-5 win over NWC.

The Kings got on the board first in b-1st with a leadoff 3B by Kenny Salzman and SF by Koby Sarubin. In t-2nd, Brad Marcus reached on an infield error with 1 out and scored on a towering RBI 3B by Matt Frosolone. The Kings came right back in b-2nd as Keegan Rettaliata and Jan Katzen drew leadoff walks. An RBI 1B by Troy Hendricks and following a lineout doubleplay, RBI 3B by Rob Barrow gave the Kings the lead again, 3-1. The Kings continued to pressure the NWC defense in b-3rd. Koby Sarubin led off the inning with an infield 1B. With 1 out, Shilo Merwitz singled, Sarubin took advantage of his speed, scoring on the play as Merwitz's hit was bobbled in the outfield. An Alan Varhaftik 2B, SF by Rettaliata, and 2 out 1B by Jan Katzen had the Kings ahead 6-1.

In t-4th with 1 out, 5 straight hits from Brad Rosenberg( 3B), Adam Silverman (RBI 1B), Howard Goldberg (1B), Bard Marcus (RBI 1B), Matt Silverman (RBI 1B), along with an outfield error pulled NWC to within 6-5. While Kings starter Chuck Grant was holding NWC at bay, the Kings got 2 insurance runs in b-5th with the key hit, an Alan Varhaftik 2 RBI bases loaded 1B. The Kings loaded the bases again in b-6th and scored on a walk to Kenny Salzman and SF by Koby Sarubin. This closed out the scoring with the Kings winning the Round 2 contest 10-5.

NWC put a scare into the Kings by taking 6-0 lead in t-1st. The other Playoffs match-up was 8/3/2008 as the #1 Kings defeated #7 NWC 12-0 in 5 innings. Chuck Grant pitched a 5 hit shutout over Howard Goldberg.

Round 2:
Sky & Sky Inc. (#5) 5  (WP-Ken Zalis 7-7)  AR Bodies (#3) 0  (LP-Jeff Harris 16-9)

The long layoff clearly affected AR Bodies, as they could not hit in game 2. Ken Zalis brought his good stuff, and outpitched Jeff Harris. Harris pitched well, but a couple of key hits and defensive lapses led to 5 runs for Sky and Sky throughout the game.

Meanwhile, the Bodies continued to fly and pop out all game. Their best threat was in the fourth inning, when Chris Canosa hit the hardest ball of the game for the Bodies right at the shortstop. In the end Zalis would toss a 5 hit shutout for a 5-0 win.

Round 3

Kings, Cannons, Sky & Sky Advance to Final Tourney Week
There will be 3 teams advancing to the final week of the Playoffs for the 3rd time in the past 4 seasons, and 6th time in the past 10 seasons. The Round 5 match-up will be #5 Sky & Sky at #4 Cannons. The winner of that game will play #1 Kings for the Tournament Championship, a 1 game Finals.

In Round 3 play, the #4 Cannons took care of the depleted #3 AR Bodies 10-2. Ar Bodies was missing 4 players from their starting infield, while the Cannons were without 3 players with injuries.

Also in Round 3 action, #2 Bombers eliminated #7 Northwest Corridor in another thrilling finish 3-2. Ted Winner's single in bottom of the 7th inning brought home the winning run.

The Round 4 battle between #2 Bombers and #4 Cannons resulted in a Cannons win. This leaves #1 Kings, #4 Cannons, and #5 Sky & Sky Inc. all with 1 loss. The Cannons and Sky will play in Round 5, with the winner advancing to the Round 6 Championship game against the Kings.

Round 3: Kings (#1) 9 (WP-Chuck Grant  13-3)  Sky & Sky Inc. (#5) 7 (LP-Alex Newman 8-9)

The Kings and Sky are familiar Playoffs opponents. They first met in the Playoffs back in Round 1 1999, Sky's inaugural season. Most of their Playoffs battles have been hard fought and extremely close. This game was no exception with the Kings holding on for a tight 9-7 win. Chuck Grant picked up the pitching win over Alex Newman.

Sky took 1-0 lead in t-2nd on a Pat Wilcox HR to RCF. The Kings got that run back in their half of the inning, loading the bases with 1 out on singles by Alan Varhaftik and Keegan Rettaliata, along with a walk to Jan Katzen. Troy Hendricks got an RBI on a fielder's choice groundout.

Pat Wilcox again homered in t-4th. Brian Sky then tripled and Tyler Price hit a SF to put Sky ahead 3-1. Again the Kings would get the runs back in their half of the same inning. A single to Alan Varhaftik was sandwiched between walks to Shilo Merwitz and Jan Katzen. With 2 outs, Troy Hendricks delivered a 2 RBI 1B and Rob Barrow followed with a 2 RBI 2B. The Kings held a 5-3 lead.

The lead became 6-3 in b-5th on a 1 out walk to Kenny Salzman and 2 out singles by Merwitz and Arin Gelletly (RBI). The Kings tacked on 3 insurance runs in b-6th, the key hit a 2 RBI bases loaded 1B by Grant. The Kings lead into the 7th inning seemed safe 9-3.

In t-7th, Brian Sky reached on an infield error, Tyler Price singled, and Andy Bloom hit an RBI 1B before the Kings could record an out. Following a flyout, Pat Tobin hit an RBI 1B. Now with 2 outs, Elliot Blank hit a 2 RBI 3B, making the score 9-7 with the tying run at the plate in Matt Holley. Grant was able to retire Holley on a comebacker to end the game in favor of the Kings 9-7.

Alex Newman held the Kings in check for 3 innings, while Pat Wilcox provided Sky's first two runs with solo shots over the fence in RF. At the end of 3 innings, the score was tied at 1. A couple of walks and Kings base hits led to 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th for Kings, giving them a 5-3. Sky went scoreless in the 5th and 6th innings, while the Kings tacked on 1 in the 5th, and then 3 more in the 6th to make it 9-3. It looked like an easy victory for the Kings, but Sky started off the 7th with 3 consecutive base hits and had the tying runner at the plate when the game ended at 9-7. Chuck Grant earned the victory, and did not walk a batter then entire game.

Sky offensive leaders:
Pat Wilcox: 2-3, 2 HR, 2RBI, 2R
Elliot Blank: 2-4, 3B, 2RBI
Brian Sky: 2-3, 3B, 2R

Round 3: NEK/ESB Bombers (#2) 3 (WP-Ted Winner 7-8)  Northwest Corridor (#7) 2 (LP-Howard Goldberg 6-7)

Round #3 playoffs games started with a rematch of game #1’s thriller between The Bombers and NWC. The previous week’s games ended with an exciting bottom of the 7th finish and an NWC victory. Sunday’s games would be just as exciting and also end in the last inning. Ted Winner and Howard Goldberg ended up in somewhat of a pitcher’s duel. Goldberg was in control on the mound for pretty much the entire game. The hardest ball hit off of him was the 1st batter of the ballgame when Ben Gutman launched an inside fastball high over leftfielder Gabe Unterman’s head. In the 2nd inning David Flamm hit a liner for a base hit and came around to score 4 batters later when Petey hit a single up the middle. Goldberg walked a couple batters in the 3rd inning and Ted Winner came around to score for another run giving the Bombers a 2-0 lead. Winner was also in control on the mound most of the game. NWC didn’t plate a run until the top of the 5th when Jon Goldman roped a line drive into left centerfield scoring Matt Silverman and Matt Bell. The 2-2 score would hold until the 7th inning. NWC looking for another comeback victory loaded the bases and expected to take the lead. Matt bell drew a walk, Jon Goldman singled to left field and with 2 outs Jon Herbst drew another walk off of Winner to load the bases. Scott Sweren drilled a line drive almost over the head of the Bombers 2nd baseman, but Chaim Finkelstein was able to make the catch and avoid a possible disastrous inning. NWC on the day left 11 men on base and scored just 2 runs off of Winner. The usually potent 2-6 batters combined for just 3 hits and 2 walks on the day. The Bombers had their 1st 2 batters reach base off of Goldberg in the bottom of the 7th, but it looked as if they would escape the inning. A popup to the shortstop and a groundball to the shortstop left NWC needing just one more out to force extra innings. Ted Winner stepped up to the plate with 2 outs and 2 runners on base looking to win the game for himself and his team. Goldberg threw pitch #1 for a strike and Winner took the next fastball and drilled a liner on the ground back up the middle to score Dan Gutman for the game winner. It was an exciting end to a very well played softball game.

Hitting Highlights for NWC:
Jon Herbst 1-1 3BB’s
Matt Bell 1-1 2BB’s r
Jon Goldman 2-3 2rbi

Week 19:  August 8, 2010
Round 4

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:    Umpire- Scott Snyder
Round 4: Sky & Sky Inc. (#5) 9 (WP-Ken Zalis 8-7)
Kings (#1) 7 (LP-Chuck Grant  13-4)

The Round 3 opponents would again meet in Round 4. A similar situation occurred in Rounds 3 & 4 in 2005 when the Kings and Sky played a Playoffs doubleheader against one another. The Kings won both games back in 2005, but Sky & Sky Inc prevented that in 2010, with a 9-7 extra innings win over the Kings today. Sky tied the score with a run in the t-7th to send the game into an extra inning.

The game did not start well for the Kings as Sky took early 4-0 lead in t-1st. Elliot Blank led off the game with a 2B, Matt Holley singled, and with 1 out Pat Wilcox hit a SF to LF. With 2 outs, Brian Sky's flyball to RF turned into a 2B. Consecutive RBI singles by Andy Bloom, Shaun Poulton, and Andy Vanlandingham produced the other runs.

The Kings nipped away at the lead with a run in b-2nd on a Troy Hendricks RBI 1B. In b-3rd, after loading hte bases with 1 out, Shilo Merwitz hit a 2 RBI 2B and Arin Gelletly hit a SF to RF to tie score 4-4.

The Kings extended lead to 7-4 in b-4th on 2 RBI 3B by Grant and RBI 1B by Salzman. Sky made the score 7-6 in t-5th on a 2B by Tyler Price, RBI 1B by Bloom, and SF by Vanlandingham.

NWC starter Ken Zalis and Kings starter Chuck Grant held the score at 7-6 into t-7th. Pat Wilcox and Brian Sky both singled to lead off inning. Folowing a forceout at thirdbase, Shaun Poulton singled home Wilcox with the tying run. With runners on 1st and 2nd base and just 1 out, Vanlandingham hit a grounder to first base where Kings firstbaseman Keegan Rettaliata started a nice 3-3-6 doubleplay to get the Kings out of the inning still tied.

The Kings loaded the bases with 2 outs in b-7th, but were unable to score. In t-8th, Tobin, Zalis, and Elliot Blank (RBI) all singled to start the inning. Sky got an additional run on a fielder's choice groundout. The Kings were unable to score in b-8th, dropping the Round 4 match 9-7 in 8 innings.

Sky had to beat the #1 team to stay alive, after just losing a close one to the Kings. Ken Zalis took the hill against Chuck Grant. Sky jumped out early with 4 runs in the first. The Kings got one back in the 2nd inning, and 3 more in the 3rd to tie the score thanks to a couple of Sky infield errors. The Kings put up 3 more runs in the 4th to go up 7-4 after 4 innings. Sky chipped away at the lead while Ken Zalis threw strikes and let the defense go to work. Sky got 2 back in the 6th, and Shaun Poulton singed in Pat Wilcox for the tying run in the top of the 7th. The Kings left the bases stranded to send the game to extra innings. In the top of the 8th, Pat Tobin and Ken Zalis singled to start the inning, and then Elliot Blank singled in the go ahead run. Sky got one more to take a 9-7 lead into the bottom of the 8th. The Kings managed to get runners on 1st and 2nd with one out, when Chuck Grant smashed a hard liner down the line that that was snared by Elliot Blank at 3B. Ken Zalis managed to get a flyout to center to end the game and keep Sky's season alive.

Sky offensive leaders:
Brian Sky: 3-4, 2R
Ken Zalis: 3-4, R
Shaun Poulton: 2-4, 2RBI
Pat Tobin: 2-4, R
Tyler Price: 2-5, 2B, RBI, 2R
Elliot Blank: 2-5, 2B, RBI, R

Round 6: Kings (#1) 7  (WP-Chuck Grant 14-4)  Cannons (#4) 5 (LP-Tom Paushock 11-4)

Chuck Easter led off the game with a 3B to CF. Kings starter Chuck Grant was able to retire Mike Dubansky on a popout to SS and Jason Schwartzberg on a comebacker to the mound, holding Easter at third base. Steve Hayes was walked intentionally and the move paid for the Kings as Shawn Warner flew out to RCF. The Kings had been unable to overcome the hurdle of the Cannons in Championship Games in 2006, 2008, and 2009, so they looked upon the t-1st inning as a possible good omen.

In b-1st, Kenny Salzman walked and Jeff Slutzker singled to start things off for the Kings. Shilo Merwitz flew out to RCF with Salzman advancing to 3rd base. Arin Gelletly hit a SF to RCF to put Kings on the scoreboard first.

The Cannons threatend again in t-2nd with Johnny Edelman and Neal Charkatz reaching on leadoff singles. Grant was able to retire Chris Zoeller and John Henshaw, with Tom Paulshock due up next. The Cannons sensing a close game elected to use pinch hitter Drew McClean for Paulshock, but he was retired on a flyout to end the Cannons 2nd inning threat.

A determined Paulshock re-entered the game in b-2nd and he allowed just a 1B in b-2nd and BB in b-3rd, while striking out a batter in those innings, not allowing a runner in scoring position.

After retiring the Cannons side in order in t-3rd, the Cannons loaded the bases with 0 outs in t-4th. Steve Hayes began the inning with a walk. Werner then crushed a ball to RF, but Kings RF Koby Sarubin used his speed to glove the ball at the warning track. Sarubin was unable to maintain control of the ball and the ball eventually fell from his glove, but confusion on the basepaths limited Hayes to 2nd base and Warner to 1st base with a 290 foot long single. Edelman followed with a 1B to CF, loading the bases with none out. Charkatz hit an RBI fielder's choice groundout to shortstop, with Edelman forced out at 2nd base. With runners on the corners and 1 out, Zoeller hit a hard ground ball to SS Shilo Merwitz. The Kings tried to turn a 6-4-3 doubleplay, but Zoeller was ruled safe at first base on a bang-bang play, with Warner scoring the 2nd run of the inning for the Cannons. A frustrated Chuck Grant was able to retire Henshaw on a lineout, but the Cannons now held the lead 2-1.

The Kings threatened in b-4th as Merwitz and Gelletly drew leadoff walks. Paulshock was able to retire Alan Varhaftik and a forceout at 3rd base and was then able to induce Keegan Rettaliata into an inning ending 5-5-3
groundout doubleplay.

In t-5th, Easter doubled with 1 out. Mike Dubansky hit a deep flyout to the warning track in RF. Kings rightfielder Sarubin made another fine play on getting to the ball, with Easter tagging up 2 bases on the very deep SF. The Cannons lead was now 3-1.

Paulshock's control got him into trouble in b-5th as again the first 2 Kings batters of the inning reached on walks-- Jan Katzen and Troy Hendricks. Following a lineout to LCF by Sarubin, Grant helped his cause with an RBI 1B. Pinch hitter Rob Barrow walked to load the bases with 1 out. Salzman then walked, forcing in Hendricks with the tying run. Jeff Slutzker hit an RBI 1B, Shilo Merwitz an RBI SF, and Arin Gelletly delivered a slicing 2 RBI 3B to RF, giving the Kings a 7-3 lead after 5 innings.

Grant retired the Cannons in order in t-6th. The Kings loaded the bases in b-6th on a leadoff 1B by pinch hitter
Steve Levy and 2 out walks to Sarubin and Grant. Paulshock's walk to Grant was the 10th free pass of the game, so Cannons manager Jeff Kurland called out to the bullpen for Mark Yokel. Yokel was able to retire Barrow on an infield groundout, holding the Kings lead to 7-3.

Charkatz was retired for the 1st out on a flyout to LF. Zoeller and Henshaw singled to start a rally for the Cannons. Pinch hitter Drew McClean was re-entered, and Grant was again able to retire him on a flyout, with both baserunners moving up on the flyout. Chuck Easter came threw with his 3rd hit of the game, an RBI 1B to LF. The Kings lead was now down to 7-4, but the tie run now came to the plate. Mike Dubansky hit an RBI 1B, Kings lead down to 7-5 with 2 on and 2 out and power hitter Jason Schwartzberg at the plate. Schwartzberg worked a walk to load the bases for past Kings killer Steve Hayes. Hayes hit a grounder to thirdbaseman Katzen, who raced to the bag beating Dubansky for a forceout to end the game. The victory did not come easy for the Kings, but they came away as Champions in defeating the Cannons 7-5. The win for the Kings ended the Cannons dominance in the previous 4 Finals 2006-2009.

Championship game notes:
►Despite the long infield grass and wet fields to begin the game, the defense on both teams was excellent. Neither team was charged with an error.
►The 3 man umpiring crew of HP-Scott Snyder, 1B-Kory Rosenberg, 3B-Reggie Grant was the same crew that worked the 2009 Championship game.
