University of Maryland Heart Center

AED Donation Ceremony occured Tuesday, May 11, 2010; 12:30 P.M.
Northwest Regional Park (Owings Mills, MD)

It is with great pleasure and appreciation that we announce that the University of Maryland Medical Center donated a portable defibrillator (known as an AED) to the Pikesville Men's Softball League. The AED, which can be a lifesaving tool when someone goes into cardiac arrest, will be available during all league games that take place during the season, which runs all spring and summer at Northwest Regional Park in Owings Mills, Maryland. The league consists of 8 teams (approximately 100 players) playing in a competitive modified-pitch league, with players ranging in age from 18-62. The Medtronic Lifepak AED unit was purchased by the University of Medical Center from Chesapeake AED Services at a significant discount.

The official ceremony and dedication took place May 11, 2010 at Northwest Regional Park, at 12:30 PM on the ball fields.

Both the league and the University of Maryland Medical Center recognize the importance of this AED unit being available during softball play following the collapse of one of Pikesville's players, Detour Dave Sandler of the Kings, in August of 2009. Fortunately, for Dave, League Commissioner Michael Herr, M.D. (ophthalmologist) and Scott Katzen, M.D., a cardiologist from the University of Maryland Medical Center, were present that day and immediately administered CPR to revive him.

The special guests attending the dedication included: Dave Sandler, Dr. Mike Herr, Dr. Scott Katzen,  Ellen Beth Levitt (UMMC Director of Public Affairs and Media Relations), Dr. John Blenko (UMMC Shock Trauma Anesthesiologist and and a course director for CPR and advanced cardiac life support), Mike Marsiglia (President of Chesapeake AED Services), Mary Ann Marks (Relationship Manager Chesapeake AED Services).

Several league players attended the ceremony including NEK/ESB Bombers manager David Finkelstein, Stingers pitcher Larry Newman, Northwest Corridor manager Howard Goldberg, and Northwest Corridor outfielder Aaron Birenbaum. Media personalities included Rob Roblin (WBAL TV 11 News), WMAR TV 2 News crew, Alan Feiler (reporter Baltimore Jewish Times).
