Week 12:  June 26, 2011

Highlights submitted thus far by Kings, NWC, Sky

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:    Umpire-Reggie Grant
Game 1: Bombers 7 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 1-0) Sky & Sky Inc. 5 (LP- Ken Zalis 2-3)

Sky & Sky was coming off six consecutive blowouts, but the Bombers were ready to put up a fight. The Bombers got one run in the first off of singles by Dan, Tzvi and Loeb. They got one more in the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead while Sky had just 1 baserunner in the first 2 innings. The Bombers went scoreless in the 3rd, and then Sky took their first lead of the game after consecutive singles by Scott Felton, Jeff Sachs and Mike Pavsner. Eric Radom knocked in another with a sac fly and then Steve Truitt walked. Elliot Blank hit a deep fly to right field that allowed the runners to advance to 2nd and 3rd and then Andrew Vanlandingham delivered a 2 out 2RBI single giving Sky a 4-2 lead. Neither team scored in the 4th, and Sky took a 5-2 lead after a leadoff triple by Sachs was followed by a sac fly from Pavsner. The Bombers got one back in the 6th after a leadoff walk, single and sac fly by Flam. Sky’s usually solid defense had some lapses in the top of the 7th, allowing 4 runs in the inning. After a leadoff single and walk, a grounder to first base was misplayed. Chaim followed with a single and then the Bombers got another with a sac fly. Newcomer Aaron hit a pop up to first base that would have been a big out in the inning, but the ball was well placed directly into the sun and dropped in. Another sac fly resulted in another run before a flyout ended the inning. The Bombers took a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the inning. Jeff Sachs and Eric Radom reached base in the 7th, but Sky couldn’t get the runs across. Ken Zalis pitched a solid game for Sky but was once again the victim of poor run support.

Offensive leaders for Sky:
Jeff Sachs: 3-3, 3B, 2R
Mike Pavsner: 1-2, Sac Fly, 2RBI, R
Eric Radom: 1-2, BB, Sac Fly, RBI
Andrew Vanlandingham: 1-3, 2RBI

Game 2:  Sky & Sky Inc. 21 (WP-Ken Zalis 3-3) Bombers 9 (LP- Tom Paulshock 3-3)

After a disappointing loss in Game 1, Sky was looking to rebound. The Bombers were looking for the sweep and quickly put up 6 runs in the first inning with the first 6 batters reaching base off Ken Zalis. Sky got 2 back in the bottom of the inning after bases loaded walks to Matt Holley and Scott Felton scored Elliot Blank and Andrew Vanlandingham. The Bombers extended their lead after the first 4 hitters reached base in the top of the 2nd and Sky was in a big hole, down 9-2. The game quickly turned around in the bottom of the 2nd. Leadoff walks to Pavsner, Zalis and Radom were followed by singles from Truitt, Blank and Vanlandingham. Brian Sky knocked in another with a sac fly, Holley walked and then Felton, Sachs and Pavsner singled. Sky scored 9 in the inning and took an 11-9 lead. Manager Brian Sky was close to bringing in a reliever for Ken Zalis, but KZ convinced Brian to stay in, and it turned out to be the right move as he shut out the Bombers the rest of the way, with the help of some solid defense. Neither team scored in the 3rd, 4th or 5th innings, and then finally Sky’s bats woke up in the 6th. After a fly out, Eric Radom got it started with a double, and then 5 consecutive hits from Truitt, Blank, Vanlandingham, Sky and Holley, were followed by a walk to Felton, a sac fly by Sachs and a 2-out 2 RBI single from Pavsner. 7 runs in inning gave Sky a commanding 18-9 lead. Sky put up 3 more in the 7th highlighted by a 2RBI double from Blank, and Sky won 21-9.

Offensive leaders for Sky:
Andrew Vanlandingham: 4-5, 2B, Sac Fly, 4RBI, 3R
Eric Radom: 4-5, 2B, BB, RBI, 3R

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:      Umpire- Kory Rosenberg
Game 1: Stingers 16 (WP- Larry Newman 5-8) Hammerheads 7 (LP- Brad Glazer 1-7)

Stingers came back to league play after their bye week against the Hammerheads. They did so with determination as they opened the game with a 4 run 1st from Chambers, Randall and Flynn. Hammerheads worked on the rust of the Stingers placing key singles and using speed to drive in 3 runs for a 1 run game. In the t-2nd, Friedman got his team going followed by solid singles again from the top of his line-up to put up another 3 runs. Flynn and Eisenberg would work the left side of the field well along with a stretched out Engler to keep the Hammerheads bats quite and take an 8-3 lead after 4 innings of play. IN the t-5th, Stingers opened the batting cage as the bottom and top of their lineup put up runs including back-to-back in the park homers from Tom Bahne and Brett Eisenberg. Randall added to the mix with his RBI triple. Hammer heads would finally be able to close the top of the inning, but not after the Stingers added 7 in the top of the 6th. However, the Hammerheads would jump back into the game as they would drive several long balls past a drawn in outfield to put up 3 runs. With a 10 run lead Newman would shut down the Hammerheads allowing only 1 run in the seventh and giving the Stingers a “W” in the morning game.

Game 2: Stingers 23 (WP- Larry Newman 6-8) Hammerheads 15 (LP- Brad Glazer 1-8)

As the day went on the Hammerheads tried to find respect. They opened the game with three solid runs and a lead of 3 -0 through 2 innings of play. However, the Stingers would awake the bats in the bottom of the 3rd. Again, Eisenberg got things going for the Stingers followed by himself and 9 other Stingers scoring as they would bat around twice and take a 9-3 lead. IN the top of the 4th, the Hammerheads would return the favor as the Stingers would fall apart for an inning, but that would be the last of the runs that the Stingers would give up in the afternoon game as they would go on to take the day with another 15 runs after 6 innings of play to take their first sweep of the season.

Northwest Regional Park  Field 4:      Umpire-Lane Gordon
Game 1: Kings 17  (WP-Mike Herr 6-1)  Northwest Corridor 5 (LP -Mark Yokel 4-3)  (6 Innings)

NWC & The Kings met for the 2nd time this season. The Kings swept NWC in their 1st meeting playing two close ballgames in the process. Mike Herr set down the NWC 1-2-3 hitters in order to start the game and set the tone for the rest of the matchup. Alan Varhaftik delivered an rbi 2b to give The Kings the 1st run of the game and an early lead. Mark Yokel pitched a good game for NWC but his defense had one of their worst showing possibly of the entire season. The Kings drilled many clutch base hits and capitalized on sloppy NWC defense by taking extra bases and prolonging innings with extra outs. Meanwhile the NWC bats never really staged much of a rally versus Herr. Brad Marcus had a 2rbi base hit in the 2nd inning but most of the NWC batting order failed to produce. Scott Snyder drove in runs in the 3rd & 6th innings but Herr and the Kings’ solid defense limited the NWC offense to just 5runs. The majority of the Kings’ damage came in the 2nd and 5th innings. In the 2nd Kenny Salzman drilled a well hit screamer with the bases loaded over the head of RF Goldberg who was playing very shallow. In the 5th inning Sarubin, Barrow and Levy started another rally that would result in 5 more runs and basically seal the game for The Kings

Game 2: Kings 8  (WP-Chuck Grant 7-0)  Northwest Corridor 1 (LP -Howard Goldberg 3-4)

The Kings started off the 1st again taking an early lead. Varhaftik again doubled in the 1st run plating Salzman. NWC started off well against Grant. Scott Snyder’s rbi hit scored Johnny Edelman who had tripled just before him. NWC’s bid for a big inning was killed by a base running blunder and a double play ball. NWC’s offense couldn’t muster any other runs the entire game off of Grant, staging rallies in the middle innings but never doing any damage. The Kings chipped away at Goldberg building on their lead slowly but steadily. After scoring one in the 2nd inning doubles by Salzman & Gelletly brought in two more runs in the 3rd inning. More sloppy NWC play in the 5th inning combined with clutch hits from Sarubin, Barrow & Levy gave The Kings 3 more insurance runs. Grant shut NWC down in the 6th & 7th innings and The Kings enjoyed a relative easy two game sweep and 4 game season series sweep.

NWC offensive leaders:
Johnny Edelman (2-3,1 R)
Scott Snyder (2-3,1 RBI)
Matt Bell (2-2)

Kings offensive leaders:
