Highlights submitted thus far by  Kings, Stingers, NWC, Hammerheads, Deuces Up

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:    Umpire- Reggie Grant
Game 1: Deuces Up 13  (WP-Rick Winepol 1-0) Hammerheads 11 (LP- RJ Seabeck  0-1)  8 Innings

Game 1 of the season seemed more like the Hundred Years' War; a two hour and thirty five minute marathon that was filled with high intensity and riddled with controversy. The game started well for the freshly renamed Deuces Up squad. The eternally self-baptized leadoff Rick Winepol started his team off well with a walk and some fine base running advancing to 3rd base on a Brad Verbosky single. After a Mark Winkel single to drive in Winepol, Josh Vaeth drove in the second run of the inning to get Deuces Up off to a good 1st inning. The Hammerheads got a big 3rd inning, which left Deuces Up scrambling to come back for the rest of the game. A bases clearing triple by third baseman Joe - fueled a big 6th inning cut the gap significantly. In the 7th inning, the Deuces Up LCF Mikey took advantage of a wild Hammerheads pitcher, as they had all game, to get the all important game tying run on base. A single by JDot put Mikey on 3rd base to score on the Andy sac fly and tie the game. An impressive 1-2-3 inning for pitcher Rick Winepol got the game into extra innings, where the Deuces Up team strung together 5 consecutive hits from the top of their order to get 3 runs on the board in the top of the 8th. The Hammerheads threatened in the bottom half, scoring 1 run and getting the tying run on base, but a Rick Winepol strike out ended the game in dramatic fashion.

17-0 (4 Innings) and 18-1 (5 Innings). That was the score of last year's opening day games for the Hammerheads. 96 runs, 2 wins and 14 losses later the season ended and they immediately started looking towards the future.

In game one, down 2-0 after 1 inning, one of Hammerheads new key additions, Jarret Smith pulled up and clutched his hammy after singling and running to second base on the next play. Instead of sticking their heads in the sand and imploding like last year, RJ Seabeck settled down and the offense picked him up. New additions Eric Blum & Jon Veditz got things going while Jarrett Smith, who could no longer play SS because of his hammy, hopped to the plate on one leg and crushed a bases clearing "single" as he hopped on one leg to first base. The game went back and forth from there with Dave Robb and Gary Bosley both coming through in clutch situations, but ultimately, in extra innings, Hammerheads let up 3 runs and while scoring one and had men on base in bottom half of inning, coming up just short in the first game of 2012.

Deuces Up offensive stars:

Game 2:  Hammerheads 11 (WP-RJ Seabeck 1-1 ) Deuces Up 7 (LP-Rick Winepol 1-1)

When you pitch a 2 1/2 hour, extra inning game to anyone, you are going to be tired. However, RJ Seabeck conjured whatever strength and intestinal fortitude he had and simply pitched his heart out in game 2. After giving up just 1 run through the first 4 innings, the Hammerheads offense came through with a huge 7 run inning to give them the lead for good. Jeff Kapper played a great emergency shortstop while RJ not only pitched his heart out, but came through with his bat singling twice and hitting a homerun late in the game to seal the deal. Just when Deuces Up thought they were attempting a comeback in the 6th inning, RJ settled in and struck out the final batter ending a rally.

So after just one week, the Hammerheads team has half as many wins and scored 23% as many runs as all of last year, showing PMSL that they will no longer be a doormat. ighlights pending.

The second game went by much quicker, although still had the same tension of the first game. Deuces Up got off to another early lead thanks to another lead off single by Rick Winepol. A big 4th inning for the Hammerheads had Deuces up struggling to comeback for the second straight game. In the 6th inning, 6 runs were put up as part of a monster comeback, although that comeback was dealt a huge blow with a controversial call. With 2 runners on base, JDot got a clutch hit with 2 outs which should have scored 2, however Mikey was inexplicably called out for "3rd base coach interference." Deuces Up started the rally going again in the 7th inning with hits from Todd and Rick, but a Mark Winkel fly out ended the potential comeback.

Game 1: Stingers 12  (WP-Larry Newman 1-0)  Northwest Corridor 10  (LP -Howard Goldberg 0-1)

Stingers opened their 2012 season against NWC. They started in a hole as NWC took advantage of the Stingers’ rust through 4 innings. In the 5th the winds began to change. Sean Flynn led off reaching base on his liner. Two batters later, Matt Friedman continued things going with a solid shot into right field. With runners on base, Newman put a shot into left that was relayed over the heads of NWC which allowed for a run and placing runners on the corners. With two outs, the Stingers came alive as they would plate Friedman, Newman, Eisenberg, Beverly and Serkes. Down runs, Stingers again played from behind , but began to play well keeping NWC’s lead within sight. In the top of the 7th and down 4 runs, Stingers battled back. Sheridan got things started off with his single followed by a towering, off the fence, triple by Mike Randall to tie the game up at 10 a piece. Flynn did more damage thereafter as he drove in Randall and worked his way around the bases with contributions from Joe Binkowski and Friedman again. Nemo held NWC to open the Stingers’ season with a win.

NWC opened its 11th season against old rival The Stingers. Despite not having any formal practices in the offseason the NWC offense looked sharp to start the game. After Goldberg shutdown the Stingers 1-2-3 in the top of the 1st the bats started working with 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Howard Goldberg and Brad Rosenberg both enjoyed rbi doubles in the 1st. More of the same in the 2nd inning as the Stingers went down in order and NWC put up another 4 in the bottom of the 2nd. Jon Herbst and Trevor Walzl both knocked in runs with extra bases. Nemo got out of trouble in both the 3rd and 4th innings to prevent the NWC offense from adding to their total. Goldberg kept cruising into the 5th inning while not allowing a Stinger run. Sean opened things up in the 5th for The Stingers with a roping line drive double. Matt Friedman drove him in with two outs for the 1st stinger run. All with 2 outs, the Stingers started compiling base runners off of hits and NWC errors, mistakes. 6 2-out runs put them right back into the game. A Chris Ammann fielder’s choice and a Jon Herbst base knock got 2 of the runs back for NWC. Fast forward to the top fo the 7th inning and the Stingers once down by 8 runs were now only trailing by 2. A Randall 2run double and timely hits from Sean and Friedman put The Stingers ahead for the 1st time in the ballgame. Newman was able to put NWC away in the bottom of the inning and The Stingers enjoyed an incredible comeback win in the 1st game of the season.

Hitting Highlights NWC:
Matt Bell 3-4 R
Jon Herbst 3-4 2R 2rbi 3b
Brad Rosenberg 3-4 2r 2rbi 2b
Howard Goldberg 2-4 R 2rbi 2b

Game 2: Northwest Corridor 15  (WP-Howard Goldberg 1-1)  Stingers 14  (LP -Tom Paulshock )

The late game started a little different then the first for the Stingers as they kept their momentum from the early game to score runs from the top of their line-up again. The top of the Stingers line-up did a good amount of damage in this game as they combined for 6 of the 7 runs the Stingers would put up after two innings of play. However, the bats got cold again and Tom Paulshock did not get much support from his outfielders for two innings which allowed NWC to jump out to a 6 run game through 6 innings. Although, down by six, having the last at bats, the Stingers bats awoke again. They would have the momentum again come the top of their order and battled back to within one, but it would not be as successful as the first game’s comeback for the Stingers as they would end up splitting the day with NWC.

Game #2 started the same way for NWC with 4 quick runs to start the top of the 1st. Matt Silverman, Brad Rosenberg & Trevor Walzl all had rbi hits to lead NWC. This time The Stingers would strike right back. Big hits from Sean, Brennan and Nick propelled the Stingers to 4 runs in the 1st and 3 runs in the 2nd. Down 7-4 in the 3rd inning, Trevor Walzl and Matt Silverman hit back to back HR’s to bring NWC back within 1 run. They would then take the lead with 7runs in the 4th & 5th innings. The seesaw battle had The Stingers put together another huge inning in the 6th. it appeared they may have put things out of reach after 6runs led by Randall, Nick and Mike Beverly. NWC having already dropped the 1st game of the doubleheader went into the 7th inning down by 1run. Scott Sweren roped a leadoff double for NWC. Adam Silverman knocked him in and tied the game with a single to centerfield. Silverman was later thrown out at 3rd base trying to advance on a Walzl single but Matt Silverman drove in Brad Rosenberg for the game winning run.

Hitting Highlights NWC:
Matt Silverman 3-5 HR R 3rbi 3b
Jon Herbst 3-5 2R 2-3b
Trevor Walzl 4-5 2R HR 6rbi
Howard Goldberg 3-5 2R rbi
