Game 1: Kings 8 (WP-Mike Herr 10-3)  Stingers 2 (LP- Larry Newman 4-6)

The Kings and Stingers met up on Father's Day with Mike Herr going up against Larry Newman in the opener. The Kings escaped with an 8-2 victory in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. Following a scoreless 1st inning, in t-2nd Stuart Sheridan doubled to LCF with 1 out, advanced to 3rd base on a Joe Binkowski 1B to LF and scored on a SF by James Engler. The Stingers would hold a 1-0 lead thru 3 1/2 innings.

In b-4th, with 1 out Arin Gelletly tripled, Alan Varhaftik hit an RBI 1B to tie game, Jan Katzen singled, and Troy Hendricks singled to LF to put the Kings ahead 2-1. Following a lineout by Glenn Savage snared by Newman on the mound, Chuck Grant hit a 2 RBI 2B to put the Kings further ahead 4-1 after 4 innings.

In t-5th, Stingers loaded bases with 1 out on singles by Binkowski, Engler, and Matt Friedman. Newman was in position to help his own cause at the plate. He hit a grounder to the hole at SS that Kings SS Arin Gelletly was able to knock down and throw to 3B to get a forceout of Engler. Binkowski scored on the play, but Gelletly's fine play kept the damage to a minimum. Herr was able to retire Tim Palo on a flyout to RF to end the threat with the Kings in the lead 4-2. The Kings added 4 insurance runs in b-6th with RBI's coming off the bats of Varhaftik (RBI 1B), Hendricks (SF), and Savage (RBI 1B).

The Stingers did get the leadoff hitter on base to start the 6th and 7th innings, but the Kings defense turned 6-4-3 doubleplays in each inning on the combination of Gelletly-Kenny Salzman-Shilo Merwitz.

Stingers opened the morning with round two of the Kings. Things were tied as both team faced their opposition and battle, but it was the Stingers who would draw first onto the scoreboard with a SAC fly from James Engler to plate Sheridan. The Kings would then take advantage of the Stingers and the lead with four of their own for the lead. However, Herr would hold the Stingers in check, but again it would not be for long as the Stingers would strike again in the t-5th to add on another run to trail 4-2 lead after 4 ½ innings of play. Stingers would try to string together some hits from the bottom of their line-up and add on another run to tie things up at 4 through 5 innings of play, but it would be the Kings jumping out in the 6th with 4 more of their own for the morning game.

Game 2 would be similar to the first, but this time it would be the Kings taking the early lead 4-0 through two innings of play. Both teams would battle and the game seemed to be closer than it was. The surging Natty O’s came out this week ready to try and upset 1st place NWC. RJ Seabeck took the mound against Howard Goldberg. Just like many weeks this season, NWC jumped out to an early lead against their opponents. The Natty O’s scored in the top of the 1st inning after a Bosley base hit. NWC countered in the bottom of the 1st after Jon Herbst drilled a leadoff line drive single to left and Goldberg knocked him home with a inside the park homerun to the left centerfield fence. In the 2nd inning Chris Ammann singles home Matt Silverman for the 1st run of the inning. The rally would continue and Jon Herbst knocked in Ammann and Matt Bell with a damaging triple. Goldberg followed with a rbi single to left field and NWC enjoyed an early 6-1 lead. NWC didn’t score again off of Seabeck and the Natty O’s managed another rally in the 3rd inning scoring 3more. The game would end a closely contested 6-4 matchup.

Jon Herbst enjoyed another rbi single and Goldberg triples home Herbst, Winner and Goldman. Adam Silverman singled home Goldberg and NWC was cruising to another 8-0 lead. That would be the end of the scoring off of Seabeck until the 7th inning. Jarosinski and Brad Rosenberg both had rbi’s to give NWC 2 more insurance runs. Meanwhile Winner was very effective in 5 innings on the mound but gave way to Goldberg to finish out the game. Goldberg didn’t show the same dominance as he had in game #1, this time allowing 5 walks in 2 innings allowing the natty o’s to stage a mini comeback. This time NWC got the victory 10-5. The Natty O’s did a good job keeping the game within reach and not letting NWC capitalize on an early lead.
