Week 18:
Round 1 -- August 4, 2013

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:    Umpire-Reggie Grant
Round 1: Sky & Sky Inc. (3) 19 (WP-Ken Zalis 4-3)  Natty O's  (6) 15 (LP- RJ Seabeck 9-14)

It took a few innings for the playoff jitters to subside as the Natty O's started the game with 4 errors in the first inning and gave Sky a 7 run lead. Their bats were also silent through 3 innings as Ken Zalis worked on a perfect game. Things got very interesting very quick however as the O's bats woke up in the top of the 4th. Jon Veditz and Jason Smulson led off with back to back singles to get back to the top of the order where Kris Stahle, Nick Meyer, Rob Medoff, Brad Wandel and Alan Monico kept the pressure on with 5 singles out of the next 6 batters and the O's crept back in the game with 5 runs of their own. Both teams would continue the offensive output and while the O's tried mightily to inch their way back, scoring 4 in the 7th and then loading the bases with 2 outs but the game ended with great diving catch on a line drive down the third base side. Sky would come away with a hard fought 19-15 victory.

Sky was in command early in the game, leading 11-0 through 3 innings, but the Natty O’s would not give up, and put up a bunch of runs in the later innings. Ken Zalis started for Sky, who was filling in for Jeff Harris who was a late scratch. With some help from the defense, including nice catches from Jeff Sacks behind the plate and Mike Deutschendorf in right field, the Natty O’s went down 1-2-3 in the first. Scott Felton got things started for Sky, using his speed to cause an infield error. Jeff Sacks reached on an error, and the Elliot Blank hit a double to right to score the first run. Andrew Vanlandingham reached on the 3rd error of the inning. Pat Wilcox followed with a Sac fly, Brian Sky walked and Bloom singled to load the bases. Mike Deutchendorf singled up the middle scoring two, Shaun Poulton walked and then KZ helped his own cause with a base hit. Sky had a 7-0 lead after the first inning.

KZ again had a 1-2-3 inning and then Blank and Vanlandingham started the second inning with consecutive singles. Wilcox hit a fly to advance Blank to 3rd, and then Brian Sky and Andy Bloom had consecutive base hits each driving in a run, making it 9-0. KZ had another 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd. Felton led off the bottom of the 3rd with a walk, Jeff Sacks hit a triple down the left field line scoring Felton, and Blank hit a grounder to SS scoring Sacks to make it 11-0.

In the top of the 4th, the Natty O’s started to make it interesting with 6 hits in the inning, scoring 5 runs. Sky got them right back though with 5 of their own. Bloom led off with a double, Shaun Poulton singled, and then with two outs, consecutive hits by Felton, Sacks, Blank and Vanlandingham plated 5 in the inning to make it 16-5. Natty O’s came back with 3 to make it 16-8, and then Sky went 1-2-3 for the first time in the 5th. Natty O’s tacked on 3 more in the top of the 6th, making it 16-11. Brian Sky brought the team in for a little motivational speech and Sky responded. Poulton and KZ led off the 6th with singles, Felton hit into a fielders choice, and Sacks was walked to load the bases. Blank singled in 2 more insurance runs, and Vanlandingham hit a sac fly to score Sacks to make it 19-11. In the top of the 7th, KZ got a quick flyout and then Rob and Brad singled. Another flyout left Natty O’s to their last out, but they had 3 consecutive base hits and a walk, scoring 4 runs to make it 19-15 and the tying runner on deck. Justin then hit a line drive down the third base line that was snared by a diving Elliot Blank to end the game.

Fields would plate Woods with an RBI single. Barner tagged up and scored on Will McCrae's RBI Sac Fly to left center. The Thunderbirds seemed to have a game tying double from Reggie Molock but the call of a fair ball was blown by the umpire. The rally ended as The Birds now trailed 6-5. Both defenses shut each other's bats down over the next inning and a half as The Bombers held on for a 6-5 win.

With a lot on the line, the Bombers came out a little flat. They narrowly defeated the Thunderbirds 6-5 behind another solid effort from Tzvi Friedman. Jay Walle took the loss. In the 1st, Yakabovitch led off with a walk. After 2 were out, Loeb and Gardner hit back to back triples for a 2-0 lead. Round 1: Northwest Corridor (4) 8  (WP-Howard Goldberg 8-6) Green Machine (5) 4 (LP- Bob Mellonee 7-10)

Green Machine was looking to make a strong showing in the franchise's first post season. Things did not start off well as NWC started the 2nd inning with a home run over the center field fence. This was followed by a string of singles and errors which allowed NWC to plate 6 runs in the inning. GM was able to claw back in the top of the 4th inning when Andy Peksa reached on an error followed by a Josh Vaeth double. Billy Giles hit a sac fly to score Peksa, and then walks to Jeff Kapper and Pete Sclafani got the bases loaded. Pinch hitter Rodney Baysmore got an RBI walk to score Kapper and then Mark Winkel hit an RBI single to score Mike Silverman. Nick Serkes hit a single to score Sclafani, but Baysmore was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. NWC got 2 of those runs back in the bottom of the 4th thanks to an inside the park homerun from Goldman and a 2 out RBI triple from Herbst. GM was able to get the lead off batter on base in the last 3 innings thanks to a Johnthan Stacey single in the 5th, a Giles walk in the 6th, and a Winkel single in the 7th. However, all the innings left those runners stranded and NWC was able to hold on for an 8-4 victory.

Round 2: Sky & Sky Inc. (3) 12 (WP-Ken Zalis 5-3) Bombers (2) 7 (LP- Tzvi Friedman  19-5)

Scott Felton got the Sky offense started with a single and was followed by a walk to Jeff Sacks. Elliot Blank’s base hit scored Felton and moved Sacks to third. Andrew Vanlandingham grounded to first, and a wild throw to the plate trying to get Sacks allowed Blank to move to third base. Pat Wilcox hit a sac fly to score Blank, giving Sky a 3-0 lead. The Bombers quickly responded, with 4 hits and 2 walks in the inning, but left the bases loaded, only scoring 3 runs to tie it up. Sky went quietly in the 2nd inning, and the Bombers took the lead after consecutive triples by Gershon Yakobovitch and Shulie Hochman. Sky bounced back with 4 runs in the 3rd inning. Felton led off with a triple to deep right center, Sacks walked and Blank stayed hot with another RBI base hit. After a Vanlandingham line out and Wilcox pop out, Brian Sky knocked in a run with a single, and Andy Bloom had a sharply hit grounder through the right side of the infield to score 2 more. The Bombers failed to score in the bottom of the 3rd despite loading the bases, so the score was 7-4 after 3 innings.

Sky went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 4th, and the Bombers plated 2 more to narrow Sky’s lead to 7-6. Both teams went 1-2-3 in the 5th inning. In the top of the 6th with one out, Brian Sky and Andy Bloom singled, and Mike Deutschendorf knocked in Sky with a base hit. In the bottom half of the first, back to back singles to lead off the game by Kris Stahle and Nick Meyer started the O's off on the right foot while RJ Seabeck and Rob Medoff would drive them in. Chuck Grant had started the last 8 Round 2 games. Herr did pick up a Round 2 relief win in 2004 vs. Northwest Corridor http://www.pikesvillesoftball.com/updates/2004%20Season/week19.htm.

The Kings defense was errorless on the day. Kings 2B Kenny Salzman made 3 spectacular defensive plays in game 2.
Kings will be missing Rob Barrow next Sunday as he and wife Julie expect the birth of their 2nd child later this week.
With 2 RBI's in the Playoffs opener, Jan Katzen tied the Kings all-time season record of 42 RBI, established previously by Dave Schwartz in 1993, Alan Varhaftik in 2001, and Arin Gelletly in 2008. Katzen is still battling Alan Varhaftik (40) and Arin Gelletly (39) for the 2013 Kings season RBI title. All 3 of the contenders added 2 RBI's to their total today. Katzen's previous career RBI high was 41 in 2007.

Round 2: Stingers (8) 10 (WP- Larry Newman  5-17)  Green Machine (5)  6 (LP- Bob Mellonee 7-11)

Round two found the Stingers and Green Machine (GM) facing off with the GM who should be changed to Noise Machine again in the playoffs. Bob Mellonee took to the mound for GM and the Stingers took advantage of him early. Tim Palo and Mike Randall jumped on the bases for the Stingers and Gary Bosley took advantage with his single to drive in Palo for an rbi. With 1 in and another two on the bases and 2 outs, John Alkire drove a skipping double that he turned into a 2 rbi triple for the Stinger to start off Round two with a 3 run lead. Larry Newman took a bit of time to get his second wind and GM took advantage of it plating 3 of their own for a tie game after one inning of play. In the b-2nd , GM would tag on another run for the lead, but the Stingers’ Sheridan would bring in Palo to tie things up again at 4 after 4 innings of play.

The t-4th would be the inning that the Stingers had been waiting for all season as the bottom of their line-up would do the majority of the damage. With Derrick Foster on third and James Engler on second with their singles, Mat Friedman would drive in Mason for another stinger run. However, the most dame would be done by Larry Newman from his hardest hit of the season over GM’s infield to plate both Friedman and Engler. Newman would later be brought in to make it an 8-4 Stingers advantage. Mike Randall had a hot bat and smoked a leadoff triple in the t-5th to be brought in by Gary Bosley’s hot bat. Gm would cut into the Stingers lead in the b-5th to make it 9-5 game after 5 innings of play. In the top of the 6-th, Brett Eisenberg made up for his late day running hard on the bases and creating enough mischief to make it a 10-5 game. In the end it would be the Stingers moving on to Round three on the back of Newman.

After getting knocked into the losers bracket, Green Machine went up against a Stingers team that was much more organized than usual thanks to the team now being managed by Gary Bosley. The Stingers got on the board early thanks to singles from Mike Randall and Bosley followed by a 2 RBI triple from from John Alkrine. GM was able to get those runs back in the bottom of the inning started by a walk from Winkel and then singles from Serkes, Stacey, and Peksa along with a sac fly from Vaeth scored 3 runs to tie the game. GM was to get the lead in the bottom of the 2nd when they got the bases loaded with singles from Silverman, Bob Mallonee, and Winkel which allowed Stacey to get an RBI single to drive in Silverman. The Stingers tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the 3rd thanks to a Bosley sac fly, but it was the top of the 4th inning that proved to be critical. The Stingers were able to get 4 runs thanks to timely hits and poor defense from GM. Pete Sclafani tried to get GM going in the bottom of the 4th inning with a lead off double on the warning track, but he did not move from second base as GM was unable to get a hit after that. The Stingers continued to open the game up with a lead off triple from Randall followed by a Bosley blooper special to drive Randall in. GM attempted to make a comeback in the bottom of the 5th inning when they got a Stacey double and singles from Verbosky, Peksa, and Giles to plate 2 runs. The Stingers added an unearned run in the top of the 6th, and GM tried to get another rally going when pinch hitter Baysmore and Winkel got back to back 1 out singles but were left stranded. Down 4 going into the 7th inning, GM was unable to get a rally going and they were unceremoniously eliminated from
the playoffs by the upstart Stingers.

Green Machine Do Gooders:

Round 3:  Bombers (2) (WP-Tzvi Friedman  20-5)    Stingers (8)   (LP-Larry Newman 5-18)
The Stingers did their best to move through the 3rd round of the playoffs and the final year under Matt Friedman. Larry Newman tried to keep the Bombers at bay, but they would jump out to an early 4-0 lead in the beginning of the game and would hold the Stingers’ bats quiet until the 6th inning. Matt Friedman led off and looped a single into right followed by Gary Bosley single down the left field line handcuffing the Bombers to make a play. James Engler would also make his way on to load the bases. Mike Beverly would take on for the team with his only appearance of the game batting for Nemo. On a questionable IF call by the home plate umpire as the ball traveled into the left outfield of the Bombers and not caught. Friedman would be unable to score and neither did the remainder of the base runners. Stingers would not be able to produce a run and move on through the playoffs.

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:    Umpire-Scott Snyder
Round 3:  Sky & Sky Inc. (3) 2 (WP-Jeff Harris 8-3) Kings (1) 0 (LP-Mike Herr 15-2)
Jeff Harris tossed a 5 hit shutout as Sky & Sky Inc. defeated the Kings 2-0 in the Round 3 Winner's bracket Tournament game. Kings started Mike Herr allowed just 7 hits, but Harris was clearly the star on this day.

In t-1st with 1 out, Jeff Sacks and Elliot Blank singled. Following a long flyout that advanced Sacks to 3rd base, Pat Wilcox was walked. Matt Holley drew a bases loaded RBI walk to get Sky on scoreboard. Harris sailed along on the mound and allowed just 2 singles and 0 walks thru the first 5 innings.

The Kings threatened in b-6th as Glenn Savage reached on an infield error and Steve Levy delivered a 1 out pinch-hit single. Harris was able to pitch out of the jam recording a groundout and popout.

In t-7th, Andy Bloom reached on a 1 out an infield error. Brian Sky followed with a single that moved Bloom to 3rd base. David Kowitz was walked intentionally to load the bases as the Kings needed to draw in the infield and set up a force play at the plate. Shawn Poulton came through with a SF to LCF to give Sky a 2-0 lead.

In b-7th, Arin Gelletly hit a 1 out 2B, but the Kings next 2 batters were retired on a popout and flyout.

Round 3:  Natty O's (6)12 (WP-RJ Seabeck  11-14) Northwest Corridor (4) 6 (LP-Howard Goldberg 8-7)
The O's took their momentum from the first ever playoff win last week into the first game and put a 4 spot up in the first inning after Sean Connelly cleared the bases with a grand slam. The lead would not last long however as the defending champs showed their grit and scored 5 runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. The score would stay that way for a couple innings until the O's came up huge with a 7 run inning with base hits by John Murphy, Brian Horr, Jason Smulson, Jon Veditz, Kris Stahle and RJ Seabeck. That was all pitcher RJ Seabeck needed as he let up just 1 more run the rest of the way and the Natty O's were building momentum going into a huge game against sky and sky by knocking out the defending champions.

Round 3:  Sky & Sky Inc. (3) 7 (WP-Jeff Harris 9-3) Natty O's (6) 5 (LP-RJ Seabeck 11-15)
Game 2 was close the whole way. The 2 teams traded runs in the first couple of innings after Justin Bullock tied the game up at 1 for the O's with a Homerun in the second inning. Both RJ Seabeck and Jeff Harris were pitching well, although both gave up long homeruns by Pat Wilcox for Sky and Rob Medoff for the O's. RJ Seabeck would hold Sky in check and the O's would take a 4-3 lead into the top of the 6th. Trying to add to the lead with 2 men on and 2 out when an infield single was taken away from the O's and a tough call led to the ejection of their third baseman. With the O's defense shifting around for the first time all day, Sky would put 2 men on with 2 outs and a groundball found it's way into a single allowing Sky to tie the game and eventually take the lead 7-4. The O's would try and rally in the top of the 7th but fell short as Sky took the game 7-5.

Jan Katzen delivered a clutch 2 out RBI 1B and then advanced to 2nd base on the throw towards the plate. Alan Varhaftik followed with another 2 out RBI 1B to put Kings ahead 5-2 after 3 innings.

In t-4th, Shulie Hochman hit a leadoff 1B. He advanced to 2nd base on a flyout by Jason Gardner to RF. With 2 outs, Dan Gutman singled Hochman home to narrow Kings lead 5-3. The Kings loaded bases with 1 out in b-5th, but Friedman was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run on a lineout and infield popout.

In t-6th, Ben Gutman led off with a 3B to the gap in CF. Flamm hit a SF to RCF to pull Bombers to within 5-4. In b-6th, Steve Levy drew a 1 out walk. Shilo Merwitz came in as a courtesy runner for Levy. Rob Barrow lined out to RCF, but a throw back to 1st base to double off Merwitz went wide and Merwitz was able to move up to 2nd base. The Kings tooks advantage of the extra base as Troy Hendricks singled to LCF with 2 outs and Merwitz was able to score. The Kings lead was now 6-4.

Round 5 -- August 18, 2013

Northwest Regional Park Field 3:    Umpires-Scott Snyder, Reggie Grant
Round 3:  Kings (1) 6 (WP-Mike Herr 17-2) Sky & Sky Inc. (3) 3 (LP-Jeff Harris 9-4)
The Kings played excellent defense all game, particularly Jan Katzen, who robbed Sky and Sky of several hits, and really controlled the game from the start. Sky was unable to keep the speedy Koby Sarubin off the bases, as he was 4-4 in the game. Sky had some unusually sloppy defense, and the Kings were able to take advantage of the mistakes. The Kings got on the board in the first inning after Sarubin’s single was followed by an infield error. Shilo Merwitz was able to move Sarubin to 3B, and scored on a fielders choice. In the b-1st, Elliot Blank got a 2 out hit but was stranded at first. The Kings scored two more in the t-2nd inning. Alan Varhaftik led off the 2nd with a walk, Steve Levy singled, and then Troy Hendricks hit a fly out. Glenn Savage singled to knock in a run, and a grounder to short allowed Levy to score the second run of the inning. Sky got one back after a lead off HR blast over the RF fence off the bat of Pat Wilcox. Steve Truitt hustled for a two out double, but was stranded at second base. After 2 innings, Kings led 3-1.

Sarubin led off the 3rd inning with a single, and was followed by a Kenny Salzman single. An infield error allowed a run to score, and then Gelletly walked to load the bases. Katzen hit a fielders choice, and then Varhaftek singled. With runners on first and second with one out, Levy hit a line drive to RF, and Matt Holley came in to make the catch, and doubled the runner off second base to end the inning. Jeff Harris was able to get a one out walk for Sky in the top of the 3rd, but he was stranded at first base. Jeff Harris held the Kings in check in the 4th, allowing just one runner who reached on an error. Sky went down 1-2-3 in the 4th inning. The Kings threatened in the 5th, with Sarubin leading off the inning with a hit, and Merwitz reaching on an infield error, but both runners were stranded. Truitt had a two out single in the 5th but was left at first base. The Kings led 6-1 after 5 innings. Jeff Harris retired the Kings 1-2-3 in the top of the 6th, and Mike Herr retired Sky 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning. Sarubin picked up a two out hit in the t-7th but left was at first base. In the bottom of the 7th, Matt Holley and Elliot Blank led off the inning with line drives into the OF. Andrew Vanlandingham hit a Sac fly to bring in Holley to make it 6-2. Pat Wilcox hit a single down the right field line moving Blank to 3B and putting the tying runner on deck. Andy Bloom hit a sac fly to score Blank, but Herr was able to get the last out and keep the Kings season alive, winning it 6-3.

Round 3:  Sky & Sky Inc. (3) 4 (LP-Jeff Harris 10-4)  Kings (1) 2 (LP-Mike Herr 17-3)
Steve Truitt led off the game for Sky with a single, but Mike Herr was able to get 3 consecutive flyouts to end the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first, Jeff Harris was finally able to keep Koby Sarubin off the bases when he hit a flyout to RF. Kenny Salzman then hit a hard sinking liner to LCF and Wilcox was ready to make one of his signature diving catches, but was caught in the middle of diving or letting it drop, and the ball rolled to the fence allowing Salzman to get to 3B. Shilo Merwitz scored Salzman with a sac fly to RC. With one out in the second, Scott Felton hit a deep drive to RC for a triple. Brian Sky followed with a ground out to SS, which scored Felton and tied the game at 1-1. Harris found his groove in the 2nd inning, retiring the Kings 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 2nd. In the top of the third, Mike Herr allowed two consecutive walks, but was able to induce a ground out to end the threat. In the top of the third, Harris got the first two outs. Brad Millison then got a base hit to LC, however, after rounding first base, he turned his head to the defense while retreating back to first, and the veteran Brian Sky threw behind the runner. Andrew Vanlandingham applied the quick tag to get the third out of the inning, and Sky was pumped for the top of the 4th. Pat Wilcox used the momentum and hit a mammoth home run that cleared the LC fence and put Sky ahead. Scott Felton had a one out double, and then Brian Sky knocked him in with a single to give Sky a 2 run lead. In the bottom of the inning, Harris gave up a one out hit to Sarubin, but retired the next two batters to keep the score at 3-1 after 4 innings. In the top of the 5th, David Kowitz led off with a single to RF, and Mark Lester who was pinch hitting for Harris drew a walk. Truitt hit a looping liner to RF that looked like it would drop in, but a great play by RCF Koby Sarubin saved a run. Matt Holley singled to load the bases, and then Elliot Blank hit a liner to center that was caught at the feet by the left center fielder, but allowed Kowitz to score from third on the sac fly. Herr got Wilcox to fly out to end the top of the inning, with Sky up 4-1. Harris only allowed a single to Varhaftik in the top of the 5th inning. Sky went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 6th, and once again Harris allowed just a single to Hendricks in the bottom of the 6th. Andy Bloom led off the top of the 7th for Sky with a grounder to SS that was briefly bobbled, and he beat out the throw. Herr was able to induce 3 consecutive ground outs to get out of the inning. Sarubin led off the 7th inning with a double, his 6th hit of the day. He advanced to 3B on a flyout. Merwitz then hit a liner up the middle that was snared by Jeff Harris for the 2nd out. Arin Gelletly then hit a sinking liner to LF. Andy Bloom tried to make the great catch, but it got caught under his glove. Seeing the ball on the ground, Arin took off for second base, but Bloom picked up the ball and fired it to second base, with Brian Sky applying the tag behind his back to end the game and give Sky and Sky their 2nd championship in the last 3 years.
