Week #9 -- June 2, 2013

Highlights submitted thus far by Kings, Thunderbirds, Natty O's, Northwest Corridor, Stingers, Green Machine

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:    Umpire- Reggie Grant
Game 1: Stingers 9 (WP-Larry Newman 4-4)  Natty O's 8 (LP-RJ Seabeck 4-7)

The two teams battled it out in the heat going back and forth all game. With the game locked up at 7 a piece in the bottom of the 7th and O's put the winning run on base but couldn't get him home and the Stingers took advantage in the top half of the 8th with the go ahead and eventually winning run on a close play at the plate.

Stingers and Natty O’s met for the first time this year. After Natty O’s took a lead on the Stingers in the 1st 2-0, they cleaned off the rust from the past two weeks as Brett Eisenberg would drop in a single followed by Rob Elrich’s single which ended up forcing the Natty O’s to catch up with Eisenberg’s speed, committing an error and ultimately a run as Eisenberg would put the Stingers up on the board. Matt Friedman would have a session with RJ Seabock and come out with a laser just by Seabock to plate Elrich and tie the game at 2. Tim Palo would add on for the Stingers with his rbi single. Gary Bosley would get some redemption against his old squad with a SAC fly to give the Stingers a 2 run advantage. The Stingers defense would come alive coming very close to turn multiple double plays on the Natty O’s and not allowing them to score in the b-2nd. However, the O’s would add on 2 more to tie the game up through 4 innings of play. The 5th inning opened the game up a bit more as both sides would score 2 runs, but the Stingers would win the long ball as Mike Randall tagged the upper fence for a 2rbi triple. The 6th was also a mirror for the squads scoring a run each. This time it was Mike Beverly putting it through the O’s defense to score Elrich. In the end it was the Stingers bats and timely defense coming through in extra innings as Beverly did it for the Stingers bats on his rbi single and Larry Newman’s fantastic pitching from the mound.

Natty O's offensive leaders:
RJ Seabeck 3-3 3 rbi's, 2 runs scored
Sean Connelly 2-4- 2 runs
John Murphy 2-3, 2 rbi

Game 2:  Natty O's 12 (WP-RJ Seabeck 5-7)  Stingers 4 (LP-Larry Newman 4-5)

The afternoon game seemed like a continuation from the morning game as both teams battled again. This time Natty O’s struck first and the Stingers relied on Beverly’s hot bat for another rbi single making it a 2-1 game through 2 innings of play. It would be the Natty O’s taking this game in the afternoon as the bats of the Stingers would fall asleep allowiong the Natty O’s to take the afternoon game with only a handful of runs scoring for the Stingers.

The second half of the double header seemed to be going the same as the first until the O's blew it open in the 4th capped off by a 3 run homer by RJ Seabeck. Solid defense from the Brian Horr and Justin Bullock along with the rest of the O's shut down the stingers for the rest of the game and the O's were able to cruise to a game 2 victory.

Natty O's offensive leaders:
RJ Seabeck -3-4 4 rbis, 2 runs, 3 run homer
Jon Veditz 3-4 1 run
Brian Horr 2-4 2 rbi 1 run
Sean Connelly 2-5 2 bris

Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 18 (WP-Brian Mekiliesky 3-2)  Green Machine 9 (LP-Andy Peksa 2-5)

Green Machine started the day with just 9 players and a crippled manager watching from the bench. The GM bats were excited for the extra opportunities for at bats, and capitalized with a 4 run 1st inning. Michael Bowen and Andy Peksa led off the game with singles, and a Matt Boden walk loaded the bases. Billy Giles drove one run in with a sac fly, and after a Josh Vaeth walk to load the bases again, Jonathan Stacey hit a clutch 2 RBI double, followed by an RBI single from catcher Pete Sclafani. Sky got 3 runs back in the bottom of the inning, capped off by a 2 run bomb over the right field fence by Wilcox. GM responded in the 2nd inning with a lead off double from Bowen, an RBI double from Boden, and an RBI single by Brad Verbosky to plate 2 in the inning. Unfortunately, the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd innings exposed the 9 man GM defense as they scored a combined 15 runs in those 2 innings. GM tried to claw back with 1 run in the 5th inning thanks to a Peksa triple (leading the team in this category, shockingly) and 2 more runs in the 6th inning. Sclafani got a 1 out single followed by a Jeff Kapper walk and both were driven in with a 2 out single by Peksa. GM was able to shut out Sky over the last 3 innings, but the deficit was too much for GM to make the game competitive.

Green Machine Do-Gooders:
Michael Bowen: 2-5, 1 2B, 2 R
Andy Peksa: 3-5, 1 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI
Matt Boden: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI
Jonathan Stacey: 3-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Pete Sclafani: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI

Game 2:  Sky & Sky Inc. 11 (WP-Jeff Harris 1-0, Save- Brian Sky 1)  Green Machine 7 (LP-Bob Mellonee 1-6)

Sky started game 2 with their bats being revitalized, getting 4 runs in the 1st inning and another 4 in the 2nd inning highlighted by a lead off triple for Jeff Harris who made his season debut for Sky as well as another Wilcox home run, this time for a 3 RBI shot over center field. The GM 1st inning was killed by a 5-4-3 double play, but the 2nd inning fared better after a lead off single by Verbosky and the 3rd of Vaeth's 4 walks on the day were plated by and RBI single from Sclafani and an RBI fielders choice from Kapper. GM had another rally ruined by a double play in the 4th inning when Sky second baseman Sky fielded a groundball, tagged the runner, and threw to first. The 6th inning was almost an exact clone of the 2nd inning, with Verbosky getting a single and Vaeth drawing another walk, both were driven in by a Sclafani single. However, Sky was able to get their 3rd double play of the game when Kapper hit a line drive back to the pitcher that was caught and Sclafani was doubled off at first base. GM was able to make a small comeback in the 7th inning with Bowen getting a 1 out single, Peksa walked, and Giles hit a monster double to center field to drive in Bowen. Verbosky hit a clutch single to drive in 2 runs, but the rally ended on the next batter and Sky was able to complete the sweep.

Green Machine Do-Gooders:
Billy Giles: 2-4. 1 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI
Brad Verbosky: 3-4, 1 K, 2 R, 2 RBI
Josh Vaeth: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 R
Pete Sclafani: 3-3, 3 RBI

bases loaded walk to tie score 1-1. Still with the bases loaded, Grant was able to pitch out of the inning on a
ground ball forcing out Gutman at the plate and another groundout to get out of the inning still tied 1-1.

In b-2nd Brad Eyler led off with a 1B to LF and with 2 outs scored on Chaim Finkelstein's RBI 1B that just eluded
the glove of Kings SS Arin Gelletly. The game remained 2-1 in favor of Bombers until t-7th inning. Kings started
